Udacity and SJSU College Algebra - Animals, Architecture, and Innovation

  • 0:00 - 0:04
Have you ever felt like the world of
math seems confusing or irrelevant? It can
  • 0:04 - 0:07
    certainly feel that way sometimes,
especially if it is explained without any
  • 0:07 - 0:11
sort of real world context. But math is
not simply a set of rules. It's an
  • 0:11 - 0:15
    intricate and fascinating language that
we've developed to understand and describe
  • 0:15 - 0:19
the world around us. >> In this course we
will approach college algebra using three
  • 0:19 - 0:23
real world scenarios. First, we'll have a
new startup company, with a very creative
  • 0:23 - 0:26
product, figure out how to handle it's
finances. >> Next, we'll look at how
  • 0:26 - 0:30
    architects use mathematics to design
concert halls. >> At the end of the
  • 0:30 - 0:34
course, we'll talk about how to model the
    population change of endangered species
  • 0:34 - 0:38
and invasive species. >> These scenarios
will help you develop a deep understanding
  • 0:38 - 0:41
of algebra and teach you how to solve
problems more effectively. >> So join us
  • 0:41 - 0:44
to learn how intuitive, relevant, and
    compelling algebra can be.
Udacity and SJSU College Algebra - Animals, Architecture, and Innovation

How on earth are animals, architecture, and business related?
You've heard it before, but we'll say it again: math is everywhere. In this class, you'll gain an in-depth understanding of algebraic principles, many of which you may have seen before, and learn how to use them to solve problems that we encounter in everyday life. The online version of College Algebra will cover all of the topics that you would see in more traditional class formats, but it will present the material in a way that we hope you'll find fresh and interesting. You will learn about functions, polynomials, graphing, complex numbers, exponential and logarithmic equations, and much more, all through exploring real-world scenarios.
