We Need Intercessors in the Church! - Tim Conway

  • 0:01 - 0:05
    Notice, Paul is praying,
  • 0:05 - 0:09
but he's not praying for himself.
  • 0:09 - 0:11
    Brothers and sisters,
  • 0:11 - 0:15
    how desperately, desperately we need
  • 0:15 - 0:21
men and women in the church like this.
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    Paul is interceding.
  • 0:23 - 0:25
Interceding is what you call it
  • 0:25 - 0:27
when you bow your knees to God
  • 0:27 - 0:31
    for the sake of others
    and not for yourselves.
  • 0:31 - 0:36
How we need intercessors in the church!
  • 0:36 - 0:39
    And I'm concerned!
  • 0:39 - 0:45
    I'm concerned.
  • 0:45 - 0:50
    When I got saved,
  • 0:50 - 1:00
    honestly, I hungered to
    have time with the Lord.
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    The first three years
    of my (Christian) life,
  • 1:02 - 1:05
I was able outside of work -
  • 1:05 - 1:06
    and even times at work
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    during breaks and lunch;
  • 1:08 - 1:11
    I wasn't married -
  • 1:11 - 1:14
I was able to give my life to
    communion with the Lord.
  • 1:14 - 1:15
And I moved down here to Texas,
  • 1:15 - 1:16
    lived with John Sytsma -
  • 1:16 - 1:25
    very business oriented family.
  • 1:25 - 1:27
And things were working at a pace
  • 1:27 - 1:31
that I just felt like -
  • 1:31 - 1:33
John was very much given to devotions
  • 1:33 - 1:34
    in the morning,
  • 1:34 - 1:37
and before the family got together,
  • 1:37 - 1:40
and I like to walk in the evenings
  • 1:40 - 1:42
and be out in the field
  • 1:42 - 1:44
    and away from the heat.
  • 1:44 - 1:47
    And John's schedule and mine
    were a little bit different.
  • 1:47 - 1:51
    I remember just panting
    after having that time back.
  • 1:51 - 1:56
    And I recognized that I
    needed to move separate
  • 1:56 - 2:00
so that I could get back
    into my own schedule.
  • 2:00 - 2:02
    And I longed for that.
  • 2:02 - 2:06
And I guess my sense was that,
  • 2:06 - 2:11
    well, that's how it is
    with all Christians.
  • 2:11 - 2:14
We don't live by bread alone,
  • 2:14 - 2:16
but by every word that proceeds
    from the mouth of God.
  • 2:16 - 2:18
We want to abide in Christ
  • 2:18 - 2:19
and we love walking with Him
  • 2:19 - 2:21
    and meeting with Him
  • 2:21 - 2:22
    and there's things to confess
  • 2:22 - 2:24
    and there's worship;
  • 2:24 - 2:27
and just getting to meditate before Him
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    and praying and interceding
  • 2:29 - 2:34
    for the sake of others.
  • 2:34 - 2:36
    I just assumed that.
  • 2:36 - 2:37
    And then I got married,
  • 2:37 - 2:40
and my wife basically lived that way
  • 2:40 - 2:42
    day after day.
  • 2:42 - 2:45
I guess my assumption has largely been:
  • 2:45 - 2:47
    Well, of course...
  • 2:47 - 2:52
    that's how Christians live.
  • 2:52 - 2:56
    I am, I don't know,
  • 2:56 - 3:01
    I'm guess I'm kind of
    baffled by the frequency
  • 3:01 - 3:05
at which I hear that people in this church
  • 3:05 - 3:10
have a real difficult time maintaining
  • 3:10 - 3:16
just a consistent intimacy with the Lord.
  • 3:16 - 3:20
And I guess my concern is this,
  • 3:20 - 3:23
    I'm not sure what lies
    behind this difficulty.
  • 3:23 - 3:25
    Is it immaturity?
    Is it worldliness?
  • 3:25 - 3:26
    Is it busyness?
  • 3:26 - 3:29
Is it just that there's no hunger there?
  • 3:29 - 3:31
    I know this:
  • 3:31 - 3:35
    intercessors don't come
  • 3:35 - 3:39
    from marginally spiritual people.
  • 3:39 - 3:40
    Why?
  • 3:40 - 3:44
    Because interceding requires love
  • 3:44 - 3:46
    and a level of maturity
  • 3:46 - 3:49
    and a lack of selfishness.
  • 3:49 - 3:55
    Selfish people - their prayers
    are all about themselves.
  • 3:55 - 3:58
    Very little worship.
  • 3:58 - 4:00
    Very little confession.
  • 4:00 - 4:05
But a lot of give me, give me, give me.
  • 4:05 - 4:10
Now, I know there are prayer
    warriors in this church.
  • 4:10 - 4:12
    I know there are.
  • 4:12 - 4:14
I know there are some of you -
  • 4:14 - 4:18
your walk is close to the Lord.
  • 4:18 - 4:20
I want there to be more.
  • 4:20 - 4:23
    I want this to characterize
    the church as a whole.
  • 4:23 - 4:24
    Intercessors.
  • 4:24 - 4:28
    We desperately, desperately need this.
  • 4:28 - 4:31
    And if people can barely
    manage to find their way
  • 4:31 - 4:34
into the secret place of prayer each day,
  • 4:34 - 4:35
    I know this -
  • 4:35 - 4:38
    you're not interceding for anybody.
  • 4:38 - 4:42
    It's not happening.
  • 4:42 - 4:44
    Where do intercessors come from?
  • 4:44 - 4:46
They come from people that live
  • 4:46 - 4:48
    in the presence of God.
  • 4:48 - 4:49
    You think about it.
  • 4:49 - 4:52
    Paul - you can imagine
    the guard walking by.
  • 4:52 - 4:55
The guards are talking to each other.
  • 4:55 - 4:56
"What's the guy doing in there?"
  • 4:56 - 4:59
    "Every time we walk by
    there, he's on his face."
  • 4:59 - 5:01
    He wasn't idle.
    He wasn't wasting his time.
  • 5:01 - 5:04
He wasn't wasting his time in prison.
  • 5:04 - 5:06
He was crying; he was bending his knee.
  • 5:06 - 5:08
He was pleading; he was crying out
  • 5:08 - 5:10
    for the sake of others.
  • 5:10 - 5:14
You find in just about every
    single one of his epistles,
  • 5:14 - 5:16
    he cried out for people.
  • 5:16 - 5:19
    He called upon them.
  • 5:19 - 5:22
    Where do intercessors come from?
  • 5:22 - 5:24
People who don't live by bread alone.
  • 5:24 - 5:27
    People who are desperate.
People who are abiding in the Lord.
  • 5:27 - 5:30
People who are talking to Him
    and walking with Him.
  • 5:30 - 5:32
    Where does it come from?
  • 5:32 - 5:35
    That somebody says:
  • 5:35 - 5:37
    "for this reason."
  • 5:37 - 5:38
    I know them to be a Christian;
  • 5:38 - 5:41
for that reason, I'm on my knees for them.
  • 5:41 - 5:42
    They're beloved of God.
  • 5:42 - 5:45
Something is released in my heart.
  • 5:45 - 5:47
I need to pray for them.
  • 5:47 - 5:49
    I'm thinking about
    other people all the time.
  • 5:49 - 5:51
    I'm thinking about their needs.
  • 5:51 - 5:53
I'm thinking about them glorifying God.
  • 5:53 - 5:57
    Where do intercessors come from?
  • 5:57 - 6:02
    Intercessors - not
    marginally spiritual people.
  • 6:02 - 6:04
You know, if we don't have intercession
  • 6:04 - 6:07
happening commonplace in your life -
  • 6:07 - 6:09
I'm not just talking about in the church -
  • 6:09 - 6:11
    if intercession is not happening
  • 6:11 - 6:14
as a commonplace thing in your life,
  • 6:14 - 6:18
    one of the great manifestations
  • 6:18 - 6:21
    of sacrificial love is missing.
  • 6:21 - 6:24
    And listen, that's important:
    sacrificial love.
  • 6:24 - 6:27
    You think about Judgment Day.
  • 6:27 - 6:31
Jesus talks about what you did for others.
  • 6:31 - 6:33
"I was in prison and you visited Me."
  • 6:33 - 6:36
You know, one of the ways
you can visit people in prison
  • 6:36 - 6:38
    is by praying.
  • 6:38 - 6:40
The thing is as long as
    you have life and breath,
  • 6:40 - 6:41
    and you have consciousness,
  • 6:41 - 6:44
    you can pray for people.
  • 6:44 - 6:45
    We need it.
  • 6:45 - 6:48
    We need this desperately.
  • 6:48 - 6:51
Where are the men and women -
  • 6:51 - 6:52
    I know we've got some.
  • 6:52 - 6:53
    I know.
  • 6:53 - 6:55
But oh God, help us to have more.
  • 6:55 - 6:57
    Men and women who live
    in the presence of God
  • 6:57 - 7:00
    on bended knee whose voices
  • 7:00 - 7:02
    are familiar to the Father;
  • 7:02 - 7:05
    whose voices go up
  • 7:05 - 7:07
    in familiarity to the Father
  • 7:07 - 7:10
    on the behalf of others.
  • 7:10 - 7:11
    I mean, you can imagine,
  • 7:11 - 7:14
    God from God's perspective:
  • 7:14 - 7:16
    "There's his voice again...
  • 7:16 - 7:19
and sure enough, he's asking for a job.
  • 7:19 - 7:21
    He's asking for a wife.
  • 7:21 - 7:22
    He's asking for a raise.
  • 7:22 - 7:27
    He's asking..."
  • 7:27 - 7:31
Those who God hears his voice:
  • 7:31 - 7:36
    "Lord, help so-and-so,
  • 7:36 - 7:40
Lord according to the riches of Your glory
  • 7:40 - 7:42
    please strengthen that brother
  • 7:42 - 7:43
    down there in Mexico.
  • 7:43 - 7:46
    Please Lord, open that
    door for that brother
  • 7:46 - 7:51
    that's trying to get
    from Costa Rica, Lord."
  • 7:51 - 7:55
How often is the Lord hearing that voice?
  • 7:55 - 7:58
    "Lord, I'm not here to
    pray for my own needs.
  • 7:58 - 7:59
    You know I have them,
  • 7:59 - 8:03
    but Lord, Brother Matt
    needs Your help today.
  • 8:03 - 8:06
    He needs Your help.
  • 8:06 - 8:12
    Johannes. Lord, remember Johannes."
  • 8:12 - 8:15
    Those who can't sit comfortably
    reading the book
  • 8:15 - 8:17
    or fiddling with their phones
  • 8:17 - 8:19
    because they're feeling a burden
  • 8:19 - 8:23
for Andy and Rebecca, or you heard -
  • 8:23 - 8:26
    those of you that weren't
    here on Wednesday,
  • 8:26 - 8:27
    Trevor Johnson wrote, I think,
  • 8:27 - 8:31
    one of the most powerful
    missionary letters
  • 8:31 - 8:36
    that he's ever written.
  • 8:36 - 8:39
Men and women not constantly asking
  • 8:39 - 8:41
    for their own needs.
  • 8:41 - 8:45
    The church needs intercessors.
  • 8:45 - 8:48
    We desperately need them.
  • 8:48 - 8:51
    Why?
  • 8:51 - 8:54
    Because God answers prayer.
  • 8:54 - 8:56
    Listen, I'm telling you this.
  • 8:56 - 8:59
I know this for a fact.
  • 8:59 - 9:00
    I'm so convinced.
  • 9:00 - 9:02
I've seen it over and over and over again.
  • 9:02 - 9:05
    God answers prayer.
  • 9:05 - 9:06
And when people are praying for you,
  • 9:06 - 9:08
    things happen in your life
  • 9:08 - 9:10
    that would not happen if
    they weren't praying for you.
  • 9:10 - 9:12
    Mark it down.
  • 9:12 - 9:15
The elders in this church preach
  • 9:15 - 9:17
    or perform or oversee better
  • 9:17 - 9:19
when people are praying for them
  • 9:19 - 9:21
than when they're not praying for them.
  • 9:21 - 9:22
    That is a reality.
  • 9:22 - 9:24
    People live more holy lives.
  • 9:24 - 9:26
    People live closer to God.
  • 9:26 - 9:28
    People are more prayerful.
  • 9:28 - 9:30
    People are more loving
  • 9:30 - 9:31
    and charitable and kind
  • 9:31 - 9:33
    and tender and forgiving
  • 9:33 - 9:35
when people are praying for one another
  • 9:35 - 9:37
    than when they're not
    praying for one another.
  • 9:37 - 9:39
    That is a fact.
  • 9:39 - 9:41
I'll tell you, I was thinking about
  • 9:41 - 9:42
    our brother coming here
  • 9:42 - 9:45
    on a week from Wednesday
  • 9:45 - 9:46
    and sharing his needs.
  • 9:46 - 9:48
If I was on a foreign mission field,
  • 9:48 - 9:50
I would want to visit as
    many churches as I could,
  • 9:50 - 9:52
and I would tell the people,
  • 9:52 - 9:53
"Look, I'm not here for your money.
  • 9:53 - 9:55
I'm just appealing, if there is one person
  • 9:55 - 9:58
    or two people or three
    people in this church
  • 9:58 - 9:59
    that are prayer warriors
  • 9:59 - 10:01
and you have any burden for India,
  • 10:01 - 10:02
    I plead with you: pray!"
  • 10:02 - 10:04
And if on Judgment Day it can be found
  • 10:04 - 10:07
    there were three people
    in that church over there
  • 10:07 - 10:09
    and there were two people
    in that church over there
  • 10:09 - 10:12
and five in that church over there,
    and they held that rope.
  • 10:12 - 10:15
    Not because they were sending
me all their dollars all the time,
  • 10:15 - 10:16
    but they prayed for me.
  • 10:16 - 10:18
They prayed for me all the time.
  • 10:18 - 10:21
    Prayer meetings did not
    go by in that church
  • 10:21 - 10:22
    they weren't praying for me,
  • 10:22 - 10:24
    and oftentimes, every
    single day of the week,
  • 10:24 - 10:26
    they were holding me up.
  • 10:26 - 10:27
    We need this.
  • 10:27 - 10:29
When we pray for one another,
  • 10:29 - 10:31
I'm telling you, we end up doing things
  • 10:31 - 10:32
    that would not happen
  • 10:32 - 10:35
if people weren't praying for us.
  • 10:35 - 10:36
    This is the reality.
  • 10:36 - 10:39
Bending our knees to the Father
  • 10:39 - 10:42
    on behalf of others.
  • 10:42 - 10:44
    We are the priesthood, brethren.
  • 10:44 - 10:45
    Have you never read that?
  • 10:45 - 10:47
That fire was not to go out on that altar.
  • 10:47 - 10:49
    And if that was the symbol;
  • 10:49 - 10:51
    if that was the hyperbole;
  • 10:51 - 10:56
    if that was the metaphor,
  • 10:56 - 10:59
    we are the true priesthood.
  • 10:59 - 11:02
Don't let the fire go out.
