The hidden ways stairs shape your life
-
0:00 - 0:02I think stairs may be
-
0:03 - 0:07one of the most emotionally
malleable physical elements -
0:07 - 0:09that an architect has to work with.
-
0:09 - 0:12[Small thing. Big idea.]
-
0:13 - 0:15[David Rockwell on
the Stairs] -
0:15 - 0:19At its most basic, a stair is a way
to get from point A to point B -
0:19 - 0:21at different elevations.
-
0:21 - 0:23Stairs have a common language.
-
0:23 - 0:26Treads, which is the thing
that you walk on. -
0:26 - 0:30Riser, which is the vertical element
that separates the two treads. -
0:30 - 0:34A lot of stairs have nosings
that create a kind of edge. -
0:34 - 0:37And then, the connected piece
is a stringer. -
0:38 - 0:41Those pieces, in different forms,
make up all stairs. -
0:42 - 0:45I assume stairs came to be
from the first time someone said, -
0:45 - 0:48"I want to get to this higher rock
from the lower rock." -
0:48 - 0:50People climbed
using whatever was available: -
0:50 - 0:52stepped logs, ladders
-
0:52 - 0:55and natural pathways
that were worn over time. -
0:55 - 0:59Some of the earliest staircases,
like the pyramids in Chichén Itzá -
0:59 - 1:01or the roads to Mount Tai in China,
-
1:01 - 1:03were a means of getting
to a higher elevation, -
1:03 - 1:07which people sought
for worship or for protection. -
1:07 - 1:11As engineering has evolved,
so has what's practical. -
1:11 - 1:13Stairs can be made
from all kinds of material. -
1:13 - 1:16There are linear stairs,
there are spiraled stairs. -
1:16 - 1:18Stairs can be indoors,
they can be outdoors. -
1:18 - 1:21They clearly help us in an emergency.
-
1:21 - 1:24But they're also a form of art
in and of themselves. -
1:29 - 1:31As we move across a stairway,
-
1:31 - 1:35the form dictates our pacing,
our feeling, our safety -
1:35 - 1:39and our relationship and engagement
with the space around us. -
1:40 - 1:44So for a second, think about stepping down
a gradual, monumental staircase -
1:44 - 1:47like the one in front
of the New York Public Library. -
1:47 - 1:48From those steps,
-
1:48 - 1:52you have a view of the street
and all the people around you, -
1:52 - 1:56and your walk is slow and steady
because the tread is so wide. -
1:56 - 1:58That's a totally different experience
-
1:58 - 2:01than going down the narrow staircase
to, say, an old pub, -
2:01 - 2:03where you spill into the room.
-
2:03 - 2:06There, you encounter tall risers,
so you move more quickly. -
2:06 - 2:08Stairs add enormous drama.
-
2:08 - 2:12Think about how stairs
signaled a grand entrance -
2:12 - 2:14and were the star of that moment.
-
2:14 - 2:15Stairs can even be heroic.
-
2:15 - 2:19The staircase that remained standing
after September 11th -
2:19 - 2:21and the attack on the World Trade Center
-
2:21 - 2:23was dubbed the "Survivors' Staircase,"
-
2:23 - 2:27because it played such a central role
in leading hundreds of people to safety. -
2:27 - 2:30But small stairs
can have a huge impact, too. -
2:30 - 2:33The stoop is a place
that invites neighbors to gather, -
2:33 - 2:36blast music, and watch the city in motion.
-
2:36 - 2:40It's fascinating to me that you see people
wanting to hang out on the stairs. -
2:40 - 2:44I think they fill
a deeply human need we have -
2:44 - 2:49to inhabit a space
more than just on the ground plane. -
2:49 - 2:52And so if you're able to sit
halfway up there, -
2:53 - 2:55you're in a kind of magical place.
