The Presence of Christ in Times of Loneliness - Tim Conway

  • 0:06 - 0:13
When I was a new Christian,
  • 0:13 - 0:16
    I was suffering.
  • 0:16 - 0:18
You say, what were you suffering?
  • 0:18 - 0:21
    I had a friend: Craig.
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    Craig had a family.
  • 0:23 - 0:24
    I had a friend: Rod.
  • 0:24 - 0:27
    Rod had a family.
  • 0:27 - 0:30
    We were pretty tight.
  • 0:30 - 0:33
    I didn't have a family.
  • 0:33 - 0:35
I would see them with their families -
  • 0:35 - 0:36
with their wives, with their children.
  • 0:36 - 0:39
    I would drive home alone.
  • 0:39 - 0:44
    Loneliness is a severe trial.
  • 0:44 - 0:48
You say, how were you helped?
  • 0:48 - 0:52
Jesus visited me in those years of my life
  • 0:52 - 0:55
in ways I don't experience now.
  • 0:55 - 0:57
Oh, I experience them, but not like I did then.
  • 0:57 - 1:01
    He came to me.
  • 1:01 - 1:04
    His presence was so sweet,
  • 1:04 - 1:09
it turned my darkness into light.
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    My sister-in-law Mida...
  • 1:11 - 1:16
She was suffering cancer, going through chemotherapy.
  • 1:16 - 1:19
    Bitter trial.
  • 1:19 - 1:23
She was on a two week rotation of chemo,
  • 1:23 - 1:33
and at that period where she would be most pressed
  • 1:33 - 1:36
by that chemo treatment, most weak
  • 1:36 - 1:38
    most suffering...
  • 1:38 - 1:41
    Jesus would come to her.
  • 1:41 - 1:45
And she actually wept when she was healed,
  • 1:45 - 1:50
because those seasons would not come anymore.
  • 1:50 - 1:52
Brethren, that's one of the ways He helps.
  • 1:52 - 1:55
He comes and He visits His people.
  • 1:55 - 1:56
I've told you this story before:
  • 1:56 - 1:59
    Scottish Covenanters,
  • 1:59 - 2:05
one of these guys was so mutilated
  • 2:05 - 2:09
the Dragoons came in and they dealt
  • 2:09 - 2:11
like 8 mortal blows to him.
  • 2:11 - 2:13
    They took his broken body
  • 2:13 - 2:15
and they just threw it on the dungeon floor.
  • 2:15 - 2:21
And as he laid there, his body broken,
  • 2:21 - 2:28
he said, "I don't know if I can withstand this any longer."
  • 2:28 - 2:31
And those bystanders thought he was talking
  • 2:31 - 2:33
    about his wounds.
  • 2:33 - 2:36
He said, "the presence of Christ is so overwhelming
  • 2:36 - 2:38
to me right now, I don't know if I can
  • 2:38 - 2:41
    handle anymore.
  • 2:41 - 2:47
Brethren, one of the ways that Christ helps us,
  • 2:47 - 2:50
    is He visits us.
  • 2:50 - 2:53
The last thing you ever want to do
  • 2:53 - 2:55
in the midst of your suffering
  • 2:55 - 2:57
is turn away from your times in prayer
  • 2:57 - 2:59
and your times in the Word.
  • 2:59 - 3:02
Because that is so often right where He comes to us.
  • 3:02 - 3:04
It was in my seasons when I would go out
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    in those early days,
  • 3:06 - 3:08
and loneliness felt at times like it would crush me,
  • 3:08 - 3:11
but I would go out in the fields and I would pray.
  • 3:11 - 3:13
And it was there praying - there were times
  • 3:13 - 3:15
when I would walk and I could feel
  • 3:15 - 3:17
    His presence at my side.
  • 3:17 - 3:21
I could have reached over and touched Him.
  • 3:21 - 3:24
And brethren, there's times when He takes
  • 3:24 - 3:28
the pain of the suffering out.
  • 3:28 - 3:29
    You may know this story,
  • 3:29 - 3:31
there was a time when Spurgeon
  • 3:31 - 3:33
was suffering the pain of gout,
  • 3:33 - 3:35
    and it was so overwhelming,
  • 3:35 - 3:36
he had to ask the people in the room
  • 3:36 - 3:37
    to leave.
  • 3:37 - 3:39
And he just cried out, you can almost hear it,
  • 3:39 - 3:43
almost like Jesus there out in the wilderness
  • 3:43 - 3:46
    pleading with cries and tears,
  • 3:46 - 3:50
and Spurgeon there with crying and tears
  • 3:50 - 3:57
says, "please!" And God took the pain away.
  • 3:57 - 4:01
No doubt, not all of it. And not forever.
  • 4:01 - 4:04
But He took it away right there when asked.
