God's Grace is NOT what many think it is. Torben Søndergaard and Jón Bjarnastein

  • 0:00 - 0:04
Welcome to this video where Jon and me,
we want to talk about the grace of God.
  • 0:04 - 0:08
We want to talk about what grace is,
we want to talk about what is not
  • 0:08 - 0:11
and we want to talk about what grace does.
  • 0:11 - 0:18
The sad thing is that we have seen a wrong
    understanding about grace that does
  • 0:18 - 0:24
that people, when we talk about the importance
of faith in Christ and obedience or baptism,
  • 0:24 - 0:28
or receiving the Holy Spirit, where people
say: "No, no, no, we are saved by grace.
  • 0:28 - 0:35
No, no, it's grace that saves us."
And every time they quote Ephesians 2:8-9.
  • 0:35 - 0:40
And therefore we want to do this video
to really talk about what grace is,
  • 0:40 - 0:45
because it's powerful. Jesus have called us
to be free, to save us from our sins
  • 0:45 - 0:49
and to live a new life. So, I hope you are
ready and I think this video
  • 0:49 - 0:51
will help many of you out there.
  • 0:51 - 0:57
If you take Ephesians 2:8-9, or we can
    take 10:
  • 0:57 - 1:03
"For by grace you have been saved, through
faith - and this is not your own doing,
  • 1:03 - 1:10
this is the gift of God - not a result of works,
    so no man may boast.
  • 1:10 - 1:18
For we are his workmanship, created in
Christ Jesus for good works, which God
  • 1:18 - 1:22
    prepared beforehand, that we should
    walk in them."
  • 1:22 - 1:28
So, we read here: "For by grace you
    have been saved, through faith".
  • 1:28 - 1:34
We start with the word "grace".
The right definition of grace is that is
  • 1:34 - 1:37
a gift that have been given to us freely.
  • 1:37 - 1:44
It's not something you have been working for
to receive and it's not something
  • 1:44 - 1:49
you need to work for afterwards.
    It's a free gift.
  • 1:49 - 1:54
It's a free gift given to all mankind.
So, a good example of that is...
  • 1:54 - 1:59
Try to imagine that you are out walking
one day and there was a man who sees you
  • 1:59 - 2:06
and he just feels love to you. And he runs
to you and say: "Hey, I want to give you my car.
  • 2:06 - 2:10
    Here, this is my car."
And he gives you the keys.
  • 2:10 - 2:15
You have not worked for that man to
deserve it and he doesn't ask you to do
  • 2:15 - 2:24
anything afterwards, extra. It's just a gift
given to you freely. That is what grace is.
  • 2:24 - 2:29
Try to imagine another example where you are
then working for a man in the garden.
  • 2:29 - 2:32
And you are working, working, working,
    fixing his garden.
  • 2:32 - 2:36
After a few weeks working for that man
he calls you in and he said:
  • 2:36 - 2:42
"Yeah, you should have 5000 $ for the work
you have been doing, but I see
  • 2:42 - 2:45
you have been really, really doing
an amazing work. I want to bless you,
  • 2:45 - 2:52
    beside those 5000 $ - I give you a gift."
That is not what grace is.
  • 2:52 - 2:58
Because then you have done something
to deserve it. Yes, he added more in,
  • 2:58 - 3:08
but grace - that is a free gift, given by God
to us, not because we were so special,
  • 3:08 - 3:13
    not because we deserve it.
    It's God and God alone.
  • 3:13 - 3:18
That is the right definition of what grace is.
  • 3:18 - 3:28
There where people really misunderstand it
is thinking that grace is what is saving.
  • 3:28 - 3:32
But it's not. And this is not what we read
    here. What we read here:
  • 3:32 - 3:42
"For by grace you have been saved through
faith." It's not written: By grace all mankind
  • 3:42 - 3:48
is saved, without faith. If you take all verses
in the whole Bible and see
  • 3:48 - 3:53
what you need to do to get saved,
it's very clear - it's through Jesus Christ
  • 3:53 - 4:00
and faith in Him. Not faith just in something,
    but faith in Christ.
  • 4:00 - 4:10
It's Christ who saves and Him alone.
And it's God's grace, free gift to all mankind
  • 4:10 - 4:20
that we today can get saved through Christ,
through faith in Him, through believing Him.
  • 4:20 - 4:30
If grace, without faith, was what was saving
then everyone will be saved already.
  • 4:30 - 4:37
Then the whole world would be saved.
But we know that people need to do something.
  • 4:37 - 4:42
They need to believe in Christ or they
    need to believe Christ.
  • 4:42 - 4:53
And believe what He is saying. So we believe
that grace is God's free gift.
  • 4:53 - 5:00
We did not deserve it. And it's God's grace
that you and me today can get saved
  • 5:00 - 5:04
through faith, through believe in Christ.
    And what did Jesus said:
  • 5:04 - 5:07
Repent and be born again out of water
    and Spirit.
  • 5:07 - 5:14
    When we, therefore, believe Christ,
have faith and repent and be born again
  • 5:14 - 5:19
through water and Spirit, as Jesus is
    saying, we will not boast,
  • 5:19 - 5:26
because we know that it's God's grace
that we today can get saved that way
  • 5:26 - 5:31
and not because of works. Jon,
you want to come with an example of that.
  • 5:31 - 5:37
Yeah. So, before that, I also want to say,
we have talked in other videos,
  • 5:37 - 5:42
    when we talk about faith,
    we talk about obedience, because
  • 5:42 - 5:46
    true Biblical faith always produces
    obedience, action.
  • 5:46 - 5:53
So, when we talk about obedience
and grace, you have to understand,
  • 5:53 - 6:00
    obedience does not contradict grace.
    It really does not contradict.
  • 6:00 - 6:04
Obedience and grace, if we look at
the full picture, if we look at the context,
  • 6:04 - 6:09
like Torben say: context, context, context,
    that we can really see
  • 6:09 - 6:16
    that obedience and grace really
go hand in hand, and not contradict.
  • 6:16 - 6:20
    So now, the question is:
    How does it look like?
  • 6:20 - 6:28
Try to imagine now that me and Torben,
we are going on a big, huge cruise ship.
  • 6:28 - 6:32
And as we are going on this cruise ship,
I am walking on the ship that at one point
  • 6:32 - 6:37
I start slipping off, I am falling off this
cruise ship down to the see.
  • 6:37 - 6:44
And now I am at the sea and I am in danger,
so I started to shout: Help, help!
  • 6:44 - 6:49
So now Torben hears my voice and
he is running. Now he looks at me
  • 6:49 - 6:54
and I am in danger now. So, what does
he do? Of course he would not stand there
  • 6:54 - 6:59
just crossing his arms and says: Now
I will look how it will goes with him. No.
  • 6:59 - 7:06
He would go straight to find a life-saver
and throw that life-saver down to me
  • 7:06 - 7:13
and then he would say: Jon, grab hold
on the life-saver so I can pull you back
  • 7:13 - 7:18
to the ship. So now, try to imagine,
if I would say this in respond to him:
  • 7:18 - 7:24
No, no, no, Torben. I will not be saved
by works. I will be saved by grace alone
  • 7:24 - 7:28
    and not by works.
    - Yeah, you would die.
  • 7:28 - 7:35
    I would die. That's silly. That's stupid.
Of course, like out of his own words,
  • 7:35 - 7:41
what he is saying, I will act in that
    obedience by trusting in him.
  • 7:41 - 7:46
So as I grab and hold on to this life-saver,
he will pull me back to the ship.
  • 7:46 - 7:49
And as I'm coming back to the ship,
and try to imagine: people standing
  • 7:49 - 7:55
around us, and I stand up and
    shout out to the people:
  • 7:55 - 8:01
"Hey everybody!" And I start boasting:
"Look, I am saved, I am saved by my work.
  • 8:01 - 8:07
Look at my muscles, how I hold on
to the life-saver." Of course not.
  • 8:07 - 8:13
Like to recognize, I was not saved
    by my own works.
  • 8:13 - 8:20
I was saved by his merciful grace that
he was willing to throw the life-saver to me
  • 8:20 - 8:26
and by that I trusted in his word,
in that obedience I hold on to the life-saver
  • 8:26 - 8:30
and he pulled me back. I would grab hold on
to Torben, give him a hug and say:
  • 8:30 - 8:34
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
So, this is what is all about.
  • 8:34 - 8:41
So, we were all drowning in the water of sins.
We were drowning in our sins.
  • 8:41 - 8:48
Jesus then threw out the life-saver.
That is the new birth, that is repentance
  • 8:48 - 8:57
and we need to repent and be born again
out of water and Spirit, what He was teaching.
  • 8:58 - 9:03
If He throws out the life-saver to us and
says: "Repent!" "No, no, no, no, no, Jesus,
  • 9:03 - 9:10
no, no, no, it's grace that saves us."
We would die. We would drown in our sins.
  • 9:10 - 9:16
Or, Jesus in another place says that one
who believes and is baptized shall be saved.
  • 9:16 - 9:19
"No, no, no, no, Jesus, no, no, no.
    It's grace who saves us."
  • 9:19 - 9:23
Then we would drown in our sins.
Or like Peter stood up on Pentecost,
  • 9:23 - 9:28
when they asked: "What shall we do?"
And Peter said: "Repent!" Like Jesus.
  • 9:28 - 9:33
"Turn away from your sins and be baptized
    everyone of you to Jesus
  • 9:33 - 9:37
for the forgiveness of your sins and you
    shall receive the Holy Spirit."
  • 9:37 - 9:41
"No, no, no, Peter, no, no, Peter.
That's good, but we are saved by grace."
  • 9:41 - 9:46
If we say we are saved by grace like that,
we would die in our sins.
  • 9:46 - 9:50
    We have to understand that...
    What is salvation also?
  • 9:50 - 9:54
Jesus did not come to save us in our sins.
He came to save us from our sins.
  • 9:54 - 10:02
He came to create a new man.
He died for us. We did not deserve it.
  • 10:02 - 10:12
It was His grace, God's grace to us
that we today can get saved through faith
  • 10:12 - 10:19
in Jesus Christ. And us who have experienced
the new birth through repentance, baptism
  • 10:19 - 10:25
and the Holy Spirit, we are never going
around and like: "Hey, hey..." Like...
  • 10:25 - 10:29
Of course we knew we need to repent
    and cling on that life-saver.
  • 10:29 - 10:33
Of course we need to obey and be baptized
and cling on to the life-saver.
  • 10:33 - 10:36
Of course we need to walk by the Holy Spirit
and cling on to that life-saver,
  • 10:36 - 10:41
but we would not go around boasting
because we know it's not by ourselves,
  • 10:41 - 10:46
it's by the grace of God that we can get
    saved through faith.
  • 10:47 - 10:52
What do you have to understand here,
when Paul says here: it's not by works,
  • 10:53 - 10:58
he did not talk about obedience that comes
by faith, he did not talk about baptism.
  • 10:58 - 11:01
Baptism is never works. You have to
    understand that.
  • 11:01 - 11:07
Also when in Galatians, when Paul is
talking about: "Who has bewitched you?"
  • 11:07 - 11:13
And warn against works, he warned
against the works by the Law.
  • 11:13 - 11:16
He is talking about the circumcision
    in these chapters.
  • 11:16 - 11:19
He is not talking about obedience.
He is not talking about repentance.
  • 11:19 - 11:22
He is not talking about baptism.
    He talks about circumcision.
  • 11:22 - 11:26
He is talking about going under the Law
of Moses, in the Old Covenant
  • 11:26 - 11:30
and not obeying Jesus in the New.
And you have to understand that.
  • 11:30 - 11:36
    Because those letters are written
    to already born again believers
  • 11:36 - 11:38
    who have repented, got baptized
    and received the Holy Spirit
  • 11:38 - 11:43
and those people he is warning against
    works, circumcision,
  • 11:43 - 11:52
works keeping the Law and not works -
obedience. And in the next verse he said:
  • 11:52 - 11:58
"For we are his workmanship, created in
    Christ Jesus for good works."
  • 11:58 - 12:00
Here is talking about the different kind
    of works.
  • 12:00 - 12:04
And this is where people misunderstand it.
    He is talking about obedience.
  • 12:04 - 12:13
So, we are not saved by works by the law.
We are saved by God's grace through faith,
  • 12:13 - 12:16
    believe in Jesus and repentance,
baptism in water and the Holy Spirit,
  • 12:16 - 12:20
as He said, and we are created
    to good works.
  • 12:20 - 12:25
By it's not good works by the circumcision.
He is talking about good works
  • 12:25 - 12:31
that has been produced in us, where we now
    walk by the Spirit.
  • 12:31 - 12:37
It's not like: Argh... I have to produce
good works. No. It's a result of the new birth.
  • 12:37 - 12:41
    Jesus have transformed our life.
    He have changed our heart.
  • 12:41 - 12:44
And the fruit and the result of that
    are good works.
  • 12:44 - 12:51
But we got saved not because of those good
works. We got saved because of His grace.
  • 12:51 - 12:58
Good works are the result of that salvation.
And that is what grace is.
  • 12:59 - 13:06
Grace is a free gift given to all mankind,
so we, through God's free gift, mercy,
  • 13:06 - 13:15
can get saved through faith in Jesus Christ.
    But grace doesn't leave us
  • 13:15 - 13:20
when we've got saved through Jesus Christ.
Grace is a big part of our lives
  • 13:20 - 13:24
and grace is the part of the transformation
that is happening in our life.
  • 13:24 - 13:26
Can you say a little about that?
  • 13:26 - 13:31
So, let's try to imagine, like we all, not
only you who are listening, but we all say:
  • 13:31 - 13:36
We are under grace. That we who all
say that we are under grace.
  • 13:36 - 13:40
What is the fruit in your life
    and in our life?
  • 13:40 - 13:44
    Because it always produces fruit.
And I want to start to read the Scripture.
  • 13:44 - 13:51
You can find that in Titus, 2:11-14.
    And there he says this.
  • 13:51 - 14:00
"For the grace of God has appeared that
    offers salvation to all people."
  • 14:00 - 14:06
And then he continues: "It teaches us",
in another words: It trains us.
  • 14:06 - 14:15
"To say “No”, to deny every ungodliness and
worldly passions, and to live self-controlled,
  • 14:15 - 14:23
upright, and godly lives in this present age."
    This is God's grace.
  • 14:23 - 14:29
So, the grace of God appears to all mankind.
That is what we read in Ephesians.
  • 14:30 - 14:36
And it - the grace of God is, at the same
    time, teaching us...
  • 14:36 - 14:42
    - Teaches us. It trains us.
    - To say "No" to ungodliness and worldly
  • 14:42 - 14:53
passions. So, those who have the grace of
God, they have the power, the help
  • 14:53 - 15:01
    to transformation and everything they
need in this life for godliness, for holiness.
  • 15:01 - 15:06
And this is what it is, because when I
understood the real grace of God in my life,
  • 15:06 - 15:09
it was when I one day...
And you can continue with this.
  • 15:09 - 15:16
    When I was studying Romans.
And Romans is saying here, Romans 6:14.
  • 15:16 - 15:25
"For sin will have no dominion over you,
since you are not under law but under grace."
  • 15:26 - 15:31
I have been trying to live under the law
and keeping the law, trying to live like...
  • 15:31 - 15:37
But when I really understood the grace
of God: Huuh... I was free.
  • 15:37 - 15:44
Sin broke in my life and now I was free
to live a new life - a holy life.
  • 15:45 - 15:53
So, I would say like that: Those who
really understand the grace of God
  • 15:53 - 16:03
are those who do not live in sin,
live in the power of sin.
  • 16:03 - 16:09
Those who have experiences the grace of God
are those who have experienced the freedom
  • 16:09 - 16:17
of God, as we read here. "For sin will have
no dominion over you, since you are not
  • 16:17 - 16:23
under law but under grace." Because grace
    transforms our lives.
  • 16:24 - 16:26
And grace do what you were saying there.
  • 16:26 - 16:31
Yes. I like what Torben is saying, so again,
    let's make it again.
  • 16:31 - 16:37
Grace is not that we have received freedom
    to continue living in sin.
  • 16:37 - 16:44
Grace is that we are free from sin.
So, we need to understand that.
  • 16:44 - 16:49
That is the whole message of the gospel.
    Jesus got the name Jesus
  • 16:49 - 16:56
because He came to save us, His people,
    away from their sins.
  • 16:56 - 17:01
But this is, somehow, the opposite of
what many people in the churches
  • 17:01 - 17:07
are interpreting as grace. They interpret
grace like it has been turned into
  • 17:07 - 17:12
a licence to sin because, yes, we are
under the grace and that means:
  • 17:12 - 17:18
no matter what we have done in the past,
present or in the future -
  • 17:18 - 17:23
    we are saved by grace.
    And let me tell you...
  • 17:23 - 17:26
    - That is so unbiblical.
    - That is so unbiblical. I just want to say:
  • 17:26 - 17:31
If that is you who are saying that,
    if this is your lifestyle,
  • 17:31 - 17:37
sorry I have to say this -
you are not under the grace of God.
  • 17:37 - 17:46
You are under the law of sin.
Because what we read in Titus 2:11-14,
  • 17:46 - 17:53
true Biblical grace always draw us to
freedom from sin into a holiness
  • 17:53 - 18:02
and to live, what he says: "self-controlled,
upright and godly lives in this present age."
  • 18:02 - 18:06
So, when we talk about, again, holiness,
when we talk about the self-control,
  • 18:06 - 18:12
we, again, do not talk about works.
    We, again, talk about obedience
  • 18:12 - 18:19
and it is by grace of God that now we can
be holy, we can walk in purity.
  • 18:19 - 18:22
This is by grace of God.
This is not our own works.
  • 18:22 - 18:25
And I would say like that.
We will end up here also.
  • 18:28 - 18:30
    We are called to freedom.
Jesus came to set us free.
  • 18:30 - 18:36
There is no condemnation for those
who are walking by the Spirit.
  • 18:38 - 18:44
    Many people react very harshly
against... When we talk about repentance,
  • 18:44 - 18:47
talk about the baptism, talk about
    the Holy Spirit and say:
  • 18:47 - 18:48
"Oh, it's works, works, works, works,
    works."
  • 18:48 - 18:52
Why do they talk like that?
Because they feel condemned all the time.
  • 18:52 - 18:58
They always feel condemned. The solution
in not saying: All of that is works.
  • 18:58 - 19:04
Because is not works. But to a person who is
under the law - everything will be work,
  • 19:04 - 19:08
no matter what they do and they will feel
condemned, no matter what they do.
  • 19:08 - 19:14
But a person who is truly, truly born again,
    truly repented, and baptized,
  • 19:14 - 19:19
received the Holy Spirit, they will
experience the grace of God in their life
  • 19:19 - 19:26
so they are not under sin and they can walk
in holiness and they can walk in new life.
  • 19:26 - 19:30
If we then do something wrong and fall,
we confess our sin and He is righteous
  • 19:30 - 19:35
to forgive us and so on.
And it's really a life in freedom.
  • 19:35 - 19:44
Freedom from sin, freedom from condemnation,
freedom to walk in the new life in Christ Jesus.
  • 19:44 - 19:51
And that is what grace is.
    Grace - A - it's a free gift. Correct.
  • 19:51 - 20:00
Grace is not a licence to sin. No, grace
is a gree gift that through the new birth
  • 20:00 - 20:05
the grace of God, the Spirit of grace
    teaching us, helping us
  • 20:05 - 20:09
to live the new life Jesus
    have commanded us to do.
  • 20:09 - 20:13
So, I hope this video gives some answers.
I know it can be a little complicated
  • 20:13 - 20:18
for people who haven't heard those
    words before: grace, licence, freedom
  • 20:18 - 20:24
and all of that, but... Next video we will
do, we will talk about the freedom from sin,
  • 20:24 - 20:28
we will talk about how we are not under
the Law of Moses, but that means
  • 20:28 - 20:32
we are not lawless, because we are
    under the law of Christ.
  • 20:32 - 20:37
And that is the law of freedom, of liberty
where we can walk in the new life.
  • 20:37 - 20:44
I will, like Paul often, read in letters:
May the grace of God be with you
  • 20:44 - 20:49
and may you grow in grace in your
life. The more we can grow
  • 20:49 - 20:53
in God's grace, the more the grace of
God is with us, the more free
  • 20:53 - 21:00
we will experience, not by licence -
freedom to sin, but free from sin
  • 21:00 - 21:02
to walk by the Holy Spirit.
  • 21:02 - 21:04
    God bless you!
    Bye-bye!
