Hanan Al Hroub - Global Teacher Prize 2016 - Winner
-
0:14 - 0:22I was raised in an environment that was full of violence, I didn't have much of a childhood.
-
0:22 - 0:29A child will mature quickly here, because the situation we live in here
-
0:29 - 0:34is different than the situation of any child around the world.
-
0:35 - 0:41My husband and children were shot at on their way home from school.
-
0:41 - 0:55My children saw their father injured which shocked my children and also shocked me.
-
0:55 - 1:00It transformed my children's behaviors, personalities, and academics.
-
1:00 - 1:05I felt that I was alone in getting my children through this.
-
1:05 - 1:11No teachers had helped us get my children back on track.
-
1:11 - 1:17We started inventing games at home and invite the neighbor's children.
-
1:17 - 1:24My daughter's confidence began to grow, they have become more sociable.
-
1:24 - 1:27Gradually all the negative behaviors began to change,
-
1:27 - 1:35their grades were improving and so was their self-confidence.
-
1:35 - 1:41After the incident I changed my major to Elementary Education.
-
1:45 - 1:50Since the first day I entered the classroom, I try to be sociable guidance counselor,
-
1:50 - 1:54a parent as well as a teacher to my students.
-
1:54 - 2:01We raise them then teach them. I must deal with their personalities that were created because of their environments,
-
2:01 - 2:10and were forced into becoming. The violence does not have to be physical: it can take many forms.
-
2:10 - 2:14Violence acts as a barrier to us, teachers, which blocks us from performing our roles.
-
2:19 - 2:25It would be difficult enough for any child to move schools;
-
2:25 - 2:33it was even more difficult for Karam (my son) because of his learning disabilities.
-
2:35 - 2:44He rejected his fellow classmates, he wouldn't play with them, and he was aggressive towards them.
-
2:44 - 2:49This is where Mrs. Hanan's role began.

-
3:01 - 3:06When I would visit him at school and noticed that he had become popular with the other students
-
3:06 - 3:10I was very happy, he never got along with classmates. Mrs. Hanan truly saved my son.
-
3:16 - 3:22I had decided to help every child that goes through something like this.
-
3:22 - 3:28Some children may not directly experience things like arrests, or assault, checkpoints
-
3:28 - 3:39and all the violence in our country, however they see it on the screens and in social media
-
3:39 - 3:40and that still affects them.
-
3:40 - 3:45This affects their lives, these changes in their behaviors and education.
-
3:45 - 3:51I read about these subjects, and adopted nonviolence as an ideal.
-
3:55 - 3:57No to Violence.
-
3:57 - 4:00From the first moment I stepped into a classroom, I used it.
-
4:00 - 4:05When I say no to violence, I pass it onto the student without them noticing it,
-
4:05 - 4:09through behaviors and ethics that I teach the students through playing games.
-
4:09 - 4:16Each game has its own rules and guidelines, and each student who wants to participate
-
4:16 - 4:21whether in a group or in the entire classroom has a role.
-
4:21 - 4:28I present the curriculum in ways that speak to the strengths of my students and their personalities,
-
4:28 - 4:32and in a way that promotes "No to Violence"
-
4:32 - 4:34and in a way that will affect their behavior positively.
-
4:34 - 4:46I move, simplify, and present the curriculum in ways that teach "No to Violnece" through "Playing and Learning".
-
4:49 - 4:55Play and Learn.
-
4:57 - 5:02She would give us lessons in the form of a story or a play. In these ways we would understand easier.
-
5:02 - 5:14Mrs. Hanan created methods of positive reinforcement, not with grades or stars or stickers, but with choise.
-
5:14 - 5:24She supports that with the reading corner where there are simple stories that speak to the students' morality.
-
5:24 - 5:35The directorate choose me to train colleagues, teachers, guidance counselors, principals in my teaching style and methods.

5:37 - 5:42Mrs. Hanan works on these children's morals.
-
5:42 - 5:49The methods of Mrs. Hanan have truly positively impacted our student's personalities and behavior.
-
5:49 - 5:53In Mrs. Hanan I see a model for teachers.
-
5:53 - 6:03I've learned to challenge myself and to always look for better ways to deal with children from Mrs. Hanan.
-
6:08 - 6:23We Palestinian are a people that suffer from all forms of obstacles and violence that is forced upon us.
-
6:23 - 6:27We just want to live in peace.
-
6:27 - 6:31We want our children to enjoy their childhoods in peace.
-
6:31 - 6:38I tell all the teachers, whether they are Palestinian or around the world:
-
6:38 - 6:43our job is humane, its goals are noble.
-
6:43 - 6:51We must teach our children that our only weapon is knowledge and education.
