State of Mozilla: Mark Surman ''How are we teaching the world about the Web?''

  • 0:04 - 0:07
    People love to learn together
  • 0:07 - 0:10
It is at the core of what Webmaker is invitation to do
  • 0:11 - 0:13
To use community to teach and learn
  • 0:13 - 0:16
It's at the core of how we do App Days
  • 0:16 - 0:19
It's not people just watching a Youtube or it isn't people watching a Youtube video
  • 0:20 - 0:23
It's our community teaching and learning with people
  • 0:24 - 0:25
    That's how Mozilla teaches
  • 0:25 - 0:26
Community's at the core of it
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    It is in our DNA
  • 0:29 - 0:34
But the thing is, if we want to teach at this scale, we are gonna need to do,
  • 0:34 - 0:38
In order to even move the mobile market where we wanted to be with the web,
  • 0:39 - 0:44
And certainly if we imagine the kind of level of web literacy that I think is needed
  • 0:44 - 0:47
In order for people to really take control of their own online lives
  • 0:47 - 0:50
We are gonna need to massively scale,
  • 0:50 - 0:54
the community people who help us teach the web to the world
  • 0:54 - 0:57
So, this is where Webmaker fits in
  • 0:57 - 0:59
which is new, still in it's infancy
  • 1:00 - 1:04
The sky is the limit, in terms of what we can build their as we call people to action to do that teaching
  • 1:05 - 1:09
To teach regular people how to move from being users of the web to makers of the web
  • 1:10 - 1:14
But the other thing that's there now is the most significant seed I think what we need to do
  • 1:15 - 1:17
is this idea of maker parties
  • 1:17 - 1:19
The idea just getting people into a room
  • 1:19 - 1:22
and teaching them a little bit about the web
  • 1:22 - 1:25
Whatever the ideas, using those tools on the site or other tools
  • 1:26 - 1:30
In over the last 3 months, we did almost 1700 of them with our community
  • 1:30 - 1:33
we, this teaching piece of it,
  • 1:33 - 1:36
while really cored to our mission,
  • 1:36 - 1:41
really cored to the idea of the internet as a public benefit, open to all
  • 1:41 - 1:44
is also key to winning in the market
