Is Scripture a Reality to You in a Time of Temptation? - Ask Pastor Tim

  • 0:05 - 0:08
"I was reading through John 4,
  • 0:08 - 0:10
    and during Jesus' discourse
  • 0:10 - 0:12
    with the Samaritan woman
  • 0:12 - 0:13
    where He says, "he
    who drinks of this water
  • 0:13 - 0:16
will thirst again, but whoever drinks
  • 0:16 - 0:20
of the water I will give
    him will never thirst."
  • 0:20 - 0:22
I can read that and believe it
  • 0:22 - 0:25
    and so clearly affirm it.
  • 0:25 - 0:26
    I can have another conversation
  • 0:26 - 0:29
    with another believer about
    it and its implications
  • 0:29 - 0:32
and be stirred up full of desire
  • 0:32 - 0:35
to live in such a way where we aren't
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    drinking from the broken
    cisterns of the world
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    and are satisfied in Christ
  • 0:39 - 0:42
    and the living waters
    that come only from Him.
  • 0:42 - 0:46
But then, I can go home and in a moment
  • 0:46 - 0:49
I find myself struggling with temptation
  • 0:49 - 0:53
    and sin and feeling overwhelmed
  • 0:53 - 0:56
even in things that can be so trivial.
  • 0:56 - 0:58
My question is about how can a Christian
  • 0:58 - 1:02
    draw out this transforming power
  • 1:02 - 1:06
    and strength from the Scriptures?"
  • 1:06 - 1:09
    He says, "It's one thing
    to read your Bible,
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    but it's another thing
    entirely to lay hold
  • 1:11 - 1:13
of a text like that in John 4
  • 1:13 - 1:16
    and wield it powerfully
    and draw out strength
  • 1:16 - 1:20
    in the time of trial
and apply it to your life
  • 1:20 - 1:33
    in such a transforming way."
  • 1:33 - 1:35
    Tim: What do you say?
  • 1:35 - 1:38
    I mean, here's the thing,
  • 1:38 - 1:41
you get in a conversation with somebody.
  • 1:41 - 1:42
    You get all excited.
  • 1:42 - 1:44
    You're talking.
  • 1:44 - 1:46
These doctrines - they excite you.
  • 1:46 - 1:49
    Why do they excite you?
  • 1:49 - 1:50
That might be worth asking -
  • 1:50 - 1:52
    why you get excited.
  • 1:52 - 1:55
    Is it an intellectual exercise?
  • 1:55 - 2:05
Is it that you've learned some new thing?
  • 2:05 - 2:08
Then you go home and you fall into
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    all sorts of temptations.
  • 2:10 - 2:12
Now, I might read between the lines,
  • 2:12 - 2:14
but I suspect they're sexual temptations
  • 2:14 - 2:19
    and probably computer-related temptations.
  • 2:19 - 2:21
    There's failure and there's falls,
  • 2:21 - 2:26
and it's like how can this be?
  • 2:26 - 2:28
Now you know, I heard a guy one time say -
  • 2:28 - 2:31
    preacher, old preacher -
  • 2:31 - 2:32
    what was his name?
  • 2:32 - 2:35
    He's that guy that preached
    in Corpus Christi for years.
  • 2:35 - 2:38
    He was on the radio.
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    Arminian.
  • 2:40 - 2:41
But I heard him say one time -
  • 2:41 - 2:43
he'd be on the radio at lunch
  • 2:43 - 2:44
when I worked as an engineer.
  • 2:44 - 2:46
I heard him say one time,
  • 2:46 - 2:49
if a man goes out and he prays
  • 2:49 - 2:52
and he comes in and he barks at his wife,
  • 2:52 - 2:59
what does it say about his praying?
  • 2:59 - 3:01
I guess the same kind of thing.
  • 3:01 - 3:08
What do you say if you have a conversation
  • 3:08 - 3:11
and you're talking about John 4
  • 3:11 - 3:15
and the water - the living water -
  • 3:15 - 3:17
    and you get all stirred
    up and you go home
  • 3:17 - 3:19
    and you watch Internet pornography?
  • 3:19 - 3:21
It's kind of the same thing.
  • 3:21 - 3:22
    (from the room)
  • 3:22 - 3:24
    It seems like it's selfish.
  • 3:24 - 3:28
    (unintelligible)
  • 3:28 - 3:31
Tim: Like the previous guy said,
  • 3:31 - 3:34
    there's a disconnect somewhere.
  • 3:34 - 3:41
    So, what's the magic formula?
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    Is there one?
  • 3:43 - 3:44
    (from the room)
  • 3:44 - 3:45
    Is he praying for power,
  • 3:45 - 3:47
    for strength from the Lord?
  • 3:47 - 3:48
    Is he praying for deliverance
  • 3:48 - 3:50
    and protection from temptation?
  • 3:54 - 3:58
    Tim: I don't know.
  • 3:58 - 3:59
    But here's the thing,
  • 3:59 - 4:02
let's not complicate this too much.
  • 4:02 - 4:03
Were you going to say somethinng?
  • 4:03 - 4:04
    (from the room)
  • 4:04 - 4:05
I was going to say the first thing
  • 4:05 - 4:06
that popped in my mind -
  • 4:06 - 4:08
the most exciting aspect of his walk
  • 4:08 - 4:11
should not be happening outside the doors
  • 4:11 - 4:13
with somebody else in a conversation.
  • 4:13 - 4:16
But it should be happening in his home
  • 4:16 - 4:19
    personally with Christ Himself.
  • 4:19 - 4:22
    And that's what struck me.
  • 4:22 - 4:25
Because for me, it's going out of the house.
  • 4:25 - 4:28
That's where I encounter the world.
  • 4:28 - 4:31
And in the home is where the strength
  • 4:31 - 4:33
and the life and the truth
  • 4:33 - 4:38
    and the foundation for me.
  • 4:38 - 4:41
    Tim: So could it be
  • 4:41 - 4:45
that what is it that gets us stirred up
  • 4:45 - 4:46
when we talk to somebody else?
  • 4:46 - 4:48
Maybe you're talking to somebody exciting?
  • 4:48 - 4:51
Somebody's very exciting to talk to.
  • 4:51 - 4:56
    They can make it exciting.
  • 4:56 - 4:58
But I would just say this,
  • 4:58 - 5:01
I don't think we want to
    make this overly complicated.
  • 5:01 - 5:04
You say, what do you mean?
  • 5:04 - 5:12
Well, think with me about Scripture.
  • 5:12 - 5:14
    The psalmist says,
  • 5:14 - 5:18
"Thy Word have I hid in my heart,
  • 5:18 - 5:22
that I might not sin against You."
  • 5:22 - 5:25
    What is that assuming?
  • 5:25 - 5:31
It's assuming that I have read God's Word
  • 5:31 - 5:34
    and I have sufficiently
    meditated on that Word
  • 5:34 - 5:36
    or memorized that Word
  • 5:36 - 5:45
so that I can recall it when its needed.
  • 5:45 - 5:48
    You know what that's saying?
  • 5:48 - 5:52
That's saying that when I'm tempted
  • 5:52 - 5:54
    to sin against Him,
  • 5:54 - 5:56
I have His Word in my heart.
  • 5:56 - 5:58
    I access it.
  • 5:58 - 6:01
    And there's something in
    the truth of that Word
  • 6:01 - 6:04
that I have hid in my heart
  • 6:04 - 6:07
that when I think on it,
  • 6:07 - 6:10
    there's such thought processes happening
  • 6:10 - 6:15
    that I make a conscious
    decision not to sin
  • 6:15 - 6:19
based on that reality from God's Word.
  • 6:19 - 6:21
And you see, there's a disconnect here.
  • 6:21 - 6:24
Because if I go and talk and get excited
  • 6:24 - 6:25
    about John 4,
  • 6:25 - 6:29
but here I've got the mouse in my hand
  • 6:29 - 6:31
    or whatever it is,
  • 6:31 - 6:33
    and now I'm tempted -
  • 6:33 - 6:35
do you see where the breakdown is?
  • 6:35 - 6:38
If I'm not able to produce the very Word
  • 6:38 - 6:42
right at that moment, what's it saying?
  • 6:42 - 6:45
    What's happening? Where's the disconnect?
  • 6:45 - 6:48
Well, I don't sufficiently have that Word
  • 6:48 - 6:51
    at my disposal.
  • 6:51 - 6:54
Or, I don't sufficiently believe that Word
  • 6:54 - 6:57
that I have at my disposal.
  • 6:57 - 6:59
You see, the truths of God's Word -
  • 6:59 - 7:05
    they're falling at that point.
  • 7:05 - 7:09
You know, I often think -
  • 7:09 - 7:13
we're going to get to this - Ephesians 4.
  • 7:13 - 7:17
    Have you ever thought about
    just how simplistic it is
  • 7:17 - 7:19
    for Paul to say,
  • 7:19 - 7:22
    any of you thieves?
  • 7:22 - 7:25
    Quit it.
  • 7:25 - 7:29
    Don't steal anymore.
  • 7:29 - 7:32
    And he encourages the opposite.
  • 7:32 - 7:34
    Work with your hands.
  • 7:34 - 7:36
    Be productive.
  • 7:36 - 7:38
Not just so that you can be greedy,
  • 7:38 - 7:42
but so that you have something to give
  • 7:42 - 7:44
to those who are in need.
  • 7:44 - 7:45
    But isn't that amazing?
  • 7:45 - 7:51
    Just stop.
  • 7:51 - 7:55
    Not: Oh, there's this deep,
  • 7:55 - 7:59
    mystical formula.
  • 7:59 - 8:03
    Listen, if you are
    regularly falling into sin,
  • 8:03 - 8:04
    the reality is this,
  • 8:04 - 8:06
    you're not applying God's Word.
  • 8:06 - 8:08
    You either don't know it,
  • 8:08 - 8:14
you know it and don't believe it,
  • 8:14 - 8:18
or you know it and you believe it,
  • 8:18 - 8:22
    but you willfully are
    choosing sin over that.
  • 8:22 - 8:26
    I mean, that's what's happening.
  • 8:26 - 8:32
    It's not a super-complicated formula.
  • 8:32 - 8:35
    Think about this.
  • 8:35 - 8:40
    I did a series on self-cleansing
  • 8:40 - 8:42
    several years back.
  • 8:42 - 8:43
It primarily came from this text
  • 8:43 - 8:47
    out of 2 Corinthians 7:1.
  • 8:47 - 8:51
    It's interesting at the end
    of 1 Corinthians 6,
  • 8:51 - 8:54
    Paul is giving these promises.
  • 8:54 - 8:57
    Just promises about God being our Father;
  • 8:57 - 8:58
    we belong to Him.
  • 8:58 - 9:00
    And he says this,
  • 9:00 - 9:03
    "Since we have these promises,
  • 9:03 - 9:04
    let us cleanse ourselves
  • 9:04 - 9:07
from every defilement of body and spirit,
  • 9:07 - 9:10
    bringing holiness to completion
    in the fear of God."
  • 9:10 - 9:11
    Now think with me there.
  • 9:11 - 9:12
    What's Paul saying?
  • 9:12 - 9:15
You ought to be able to think
  • 9:15 - 9:21
    on the promises of Scripture,
  • 9:21 - 9:28
and not fall into defling activities.
  • 9:28 - 9:31
    What does Scripture say?
  • 9:31 - 9:36
We are to be renewing our minds.
  • 9:36 - 9:38
And what are we doing as
    we're renewing our minds?
  • 9:38 - 9:40
We're figuring out what God's will is.
  • 9:40 - 9:44
You know, you come to Scripture.
  • 9:44 - 9:48
You find out what God's will is
  • 9:48 - 9:51
    and you do it.
  • 9:51 - 9:54
And the thing is, as a Christian,
  • 9:54 - 9:57
we hunger and thirst after righteousness.
  • 9:57 - 9:59
    There is a hunger.
  • 9:59 - 10:00
There is a hunger to do His will.
  • 10:00 - 10:02
There's a hunger to please Him.
  • 10:02 - 10:05
    There's a hunger after
    what's good and righteous.
  • 10:05 - 10:11
And so, there's a huge disconnect
  • 10:11 - 10:17
if we find that in the
    moment of temptation,
  • 10:17 - 10:20
    God's Word just isn't there.
  • 10:20 - 10:24
My mind doesn't go to it.
  • 10:24 - 10:26
You know, if you get there
    in front of the computer,
  • 10:26 - 10:27
    and it's just like:
  • 10:27 - 10:29
Nope, I don't even want to think about it.
  • 10:29 - 10:30
I don't want to think about this.
  • 10:30 - 10:33
I don't want to think about what God says.
  • 10:33 - 10:36
See, that's not how I live my life.
  • 10:36 - 10:37
    I'm studying the Word
  • 10:37 - 10:39
not just so I can get lathered up
  • 10:39 - 10:42
    and all excited when I'm
    talking to you about it.
  • 10:42 - 10:46
    I'm reading it and I'm
    trying to hide it away
  • 10:46 - 10:48
in my mind, in my conscience,
  • 10:48 - 10:50
so that as I'm going through life
  • 10:50 - 10:52
    and there's something,
  • 10:52 - 10:53
    I'm trying to evaluate everything
  • 10:53 - 10:56
through the filter of God's Word.
  • 10:56 - 10:58
And it's like: God doesn't like this.
  • 10:58 - 10:59
And this will not go well.
  • 10:59 - 11:01
And this will grieve the Spirit.
  • 11:01 - 11:02
And I will suffer for it.
  • 11:02 - 11:07
    This is not good.
  • 11:07 - 11:09
You know, you convince yourself of that,
  • 11:09 - 11:11
    that this is not good.
  • 11:11 - 11:13
I was just talking to a brother
  • 11:13 - 11:15
    right before our study tonight,
  • 11:15 - 11:17
    and he was telling me,
  • 11:17 - 11:19
you know I've been in some hard places.
  • 11:19 - 11:21
And he said there was a point in his life
  • 11:21 - 11:22
when he fell and he said
  • 11:22 - 11:24
    there was just such darkness.
  • 11:24 - 11:27
And he said it was a battle.
  • 11:27 - 11:30
He talked about scratching and clawing
  • 11:30 - 11:33
to get his way out of that darkness.
  • 11:33 - 11:36
And he said he's in the light now.
  • 11:36 - 11:38
And he said he feels closer to God
  • 11:38 - 11:39
    than he's ever felt,
  • 11:39 - 11:41
and the last thing he would want to do
  • 11:41 - 11:43
is go down that road into sin
  • 11:43 - 11:45
that would in any way harm that
  • 11:45 - 11:46
    or take it away.
  • 11:46 - 11:53
And see, if these realities of Scripture -
  • 11:53 - 11:57
    don't grieve the Spirit.
  • 11:57 - 11:58
    You've been sealed by Him.
  • 11:58 - 12:00
    Don't grieve Him.
  • 12:00 - 12:01
    If you recognize,
  • 12:01 - 12:03
my sin is going to grieve the Lord.
  • 12:03 - 12:06
My sin is going to take me
out of fellowship with the Lord.
  • 12:06 - 12:09
My sin is going to impact my prayer life.
  • 12:09 - 12:11
My sin - it's going to hold me back.
  • 12:11 - 12:13
It's going to weigh me down.
  • 12:13 - 12:15
It's going to make me less productive.
  • 12:15 - 12:17
I'm not going to be the vessel
  • 12:17 - 12:20
    fit for the Master's use.
  • 12:20 - 12:21
    It's going to pollute me.
  • 12:21 - 12:23
    It's a defilement.
  • 12:23 - 12:25
    Sin never does good.
  • 12:25 - 12:28
    It never helps you.
    It never makes you better.
  • 12:28 - 12:30
    It doesn't.
  • 12:30 - 12:31
    It doesn't make you stronger.
  • 12:31 - 12:32
It doesn't make you run better.
  • 12:32 - 12:34
It doesn't make you more Christlike.
  • 12:34 - 12:37
It isn't. It's bad all the time.
  • 12:37 - 12:39
And if you've got enough Scripture
  • 12:39 - 12:41
    packed away in your heart
  • 12:41 - 12:42
    that you know that's true
  • 12:42 - 12:44
    and you're confronted by that
  • 12:44 - 12:46
    when you're making decisions -
  • 12:46 - 12:49
    I recognize sometimes
    we're grabbed immediately
  • 12:49 - 12:51
    by temptations,
  • 12:51 - 12:53
    and we get swept away.
  • 12:53 - 12:58
I recognize those kind of things happen.
  • 12:58 - 13:00
    Scripture says in Psalm 37,
  • 13:00 - 13:03
"The law of his God is in his heart.
  • 13:03 - 13:07
    His steps do not slip."
  • 13:07 - 13:09
Why? Because the law's in his heart.
  • 13:09 - 13:23
It gives firmness to your step.
  • 13:23 - 13:26
I guess before I move on to the last one
  • 13:26 - 13:29
    if I even get there,
    I would just say this.
  • 13:29 - 13:31
One of the thoughts that just came
  • 13:31 - 13:32
    when I was thinking:
  • 13:32 - 13:36
what do you say to somebody like this?
  • 13:36 - 13:40
I got to thinking about the devil.
  • 13:40 - 13:46
We know that the devil snatches the seed.
  • 13:46 - 13:55
And look, the devil is a seed-snatcher.
  • 13:55 - 13:57
And he will seek to snatch it
    from the true Christian
  • 13:57 - 14:01
just as well as from the lost person.
  • 14:01 - 14:03
    And I would say this,
  • 14:03 - 14:08
don't lose the Word of God.
  • 14:08 - 14:12
    Don't go sit and read
  • 14:12 - 14:15
three chapters out of your Bible
  • 14:15 - 14:18
and then listen to garbage music,
  • 14:18 - 14:23
    garbage TV, garbage Internet use,
  • 14:23 - 14:26
    and social media -
  • 14:26 - 14:28
    don't do that.
  • 14:28 - 14:32
It's like taking a bunch of seed
  • 14:32 - 14:35
and you've just thrown it there,
  • 14:35 - 14:36
and you want to see fruit come from it,
  • 14:38 - 14:40
    and you purposely walk out
  • 14:40 - 14:42
to where all the ravens are.
  • 14:42 - 14:45
Just like daring them to take it all away.
  • 14:45 - 14:47
    Don't do that.
  • 14:47 - 14:50
I mean, you hear the Word of God preached,
  • 14:50 - 14:51
I know - our church breaks out
  • 14:51 - 14:53
    into immediate fellowship,
  • 14:53 - 14:56
but there can be a place to get out,
  • 14:56 - 14:58
    get away.
  • 14:58 - 15:00
I mean, I felt that at the conference
  • 15:00 - 15:02
    when Geoffrey Thomas preached.
  • 15:02 - 15:04
I just wanted to run away
  • 15:04 - 15:07
    and just go be alone.
  • 15:07 - 15:10
Why? I just want it to soak in.
  • 15:10 - 15:15
    I mean, don't throw
    away the Word of God.
  • 15:15 - 15:17
    We're trying to cleanse.
  • 15:17 - 15:19
It's kind of like taking soap and water,
  • 15:19 - 15:22
and you're trying to clean something,
  • 15:22 - 15:28
and then throw a bunch of mud on it.
  • 15:28 - 15:30
    It's counterproductive.
  • 15:30 - 15:32
    Don't do that.
  • 15:32 - 15:37
If you're going to hide Scripture,
  • 15:37 - 15:38
    do it effectually.
  • 15:38 - 15:44
Do it in such a way that
    it's readily retained
  • 15:44 - 15:48
    and readily accessible.
  • 15:48 - 15:52
    (Incomplete thought)
  • 15:52 - 15:57
    Don't compartmentalize your life.
  • 15:57 - 15:59
What do I mean by that?
  • 15:59 - 16:04
Well, I've got to read my Bible.
  • 16:04 - 16:08
But now, okay, I'm done with that.
  • 16:08 - 16:09
It's kind of like the person
  • 16:09 - 16:11
that just splits up their week.
  • 16:11 - 16:15
    Sunday mornings - religious.
  • 16:15 - 16:17
The rest of the week, I'm a pagan.
  • 16:17 - 16:20
But see, we can divide our
    days up like that too.
  • 16:20 - 16:22
    We've got our little
    segment of prayer there,
  • 16:22 - 16:23
and we've got our Bible reading.
  • 16:23 - 16:25
    We've got that done.
  • 16:25 - 16:28
Now I can go gossip with
    the people at work.
  • 16:28 - 16:32
    Don't do that.
  • 16:32 - 16:35
    Listen, we're Christians.
  • 16:35 - 16:39
    Live Christian lives 24/7.
  • 16:39 - 16:42
    Let Scripture permeate 24/7.
  • 16:42 - 16:44
    Don't shut down.
  • 16:44 - 16:47
If you're using your Christian liberty
  • 16:47 - 16:51
and it's like yeah, I feel like
  • 16:51 - 16:54
I can take rest and I can camp out
  • 16:54 - 16:56
with my family, and I can watch
  • 16:56 - 16:58
Little House on the Prairie -
  • 16:58 - 17:00
I only say that because my daughters
  • 17:00 - 17:02
    had that on last night.
  • 17:02 - 17:06
    I mean, look, assess it.
  • 17:06 - 17:10
    After you watch three shows
  • 17:10 - 17:13
of Little House on the Prairie,
  • 17:13 - 17:16
    are you messed up?
  • 17:16 - 17:20
    Does it pollute you?
  • 17:20 - 17:23
    Then don't do it.
  • 17:23 - 17:25
    I mean think, think, think.
  • 17:25 - 17:27
We're to be renewing our minds.
  • 17:27 - 17:28
    What is God's will?
  • 17:28 - 17:30
    Run everything through that filter.
  • 17:30 - 17:33
    Through God's will;
through God's will; through God's will.
  • 17:33 - 17:34
    What's pulling me away?
  • 17:34 - 17:36
    What grabs my heart?
  • 17:36 - 17:38
So that my mind goes off it?
  • 17:38 - 17:39
    What are the idols?
  • 17:39 - 17:41
What are the things in life?
  • 17:41 - 17:43
    You know, somebody could watch
  • 17:43 - 17:46
a football game, and it's like,
  • 17:46 - 17:48
    they're thinking about
    the Lord through it.
  • 17:48 - 17:50
    Now they might focus
on the game a little bit,
  • 17:50 - 17:52
    but they're feeling like
  • 17:52 - 17:53
I need to go outside and pray.
  • 17:53 - 17:54
    There's some people:
  • 17:54 - 17:56
how could you ever go outside and pray
  • 17:56 - 17:58
    during a football game?
  • 17:58 - 18:01
    What? Are you crazy?
  • 18:01 - 18:02
    You're so excited.
    You're so into it.
  • 18:02 - 18:04
And then all you can think about
  • 18:04 - 18:07
    is football stats and everything
    for the next week.
  • 18:07 - 18:10
    You need to stop.
  • 18:10 - 18:14
Listen, Paul said, we've got liberty,
  • 18:14 - 18:16
but you don't let anything bring you
  • 18:16 - 18:17
    under its power.
  • 18:17 - 18:19
You need to live your life that way.
  • 18:19 - 18:21
If you're living your life where it's like
  • 18:21 - 18:23
all you can think about is -
  • 18:23 - 18:25
whatever it is, put it in there,
  • 18:25 - 18:29
    but if it's distracting,
  • 18:29 - 18:31
    we need to live -
  • 18:31 - 18:33
    and it doesn't mean
  • 18:33 - 18:35
that every song you listen to
  • 18:35 - 18:38
    has to be specifically
    be the Christian song.
  • 18:38 - 18:40
    But, it certainly doesn't hurt
  • 18:40 - 18:42
    if you're singing Christian songs
  • 18:42 - 18:43
    all through the day,
  • 18:43 - 18:47
    and you're reciting biblical truths.
  • 18:47 - 18:50
    Look, the more you
    can permeate your mind -
  • 18:50 - 18:52
    I recognize, we don't
    read and we don't pray
  • 18:52 - 18:54
every hour of our waking day.
  • 18:54 - 18:56
I recognize we have lives to live
  • 18:56 - 18:58
    where we have to work
  • 18:58 - 18:59
    and we go to school
  • 18:59 - 19:02
and we shop and we get gas.
  • 19:02 - 19:04
    I recognize that.
  • 19:04 - 19:06
But listen, if you're storing up
  • 19:06 - 19:09
and treasuring that Word in your heart,
  • 19:09 - 19:11
it's there when you're at the gas station.
  • 19:11 - 19:13
    It's there at HEB,
  • 19:13 - 19:14
and it's there in the classroom.
  • 19:14 - 19:16
    It's there in the workplace,
  • 19:16 - 19:18
and it's there at home when
you're taking care of the kids.
  • 19:18 - 19:20
And it's there and it's permeating,
  • 19:20 - 19:23
and it's regulating, and it's guiding.
  • 19:23 - 19:26
The Word is a lamp unto my feet.
  • 19:26 - 19:27
    You imagine walking around,
  • 19:27 - 19:29
    pitch black outside.
  • 19:29 - 19:30
A lamp to your feet -
  • 19:30 - 19:31
    it means I can see.
  • 19:31 - 19:34
I can see where I should put my next step.
  • 19:34 - 19:36
Notice it's a lamp to your feet,
  • 19:36 - 19:37
    not just a lamp to your eyes;
  • 19:37 - 19:39
not just a lamp to your body.
  • 19:39 - 19:40
It's a lamp for your feet.
    What does that mean?
  • 19:40 - 19:42
It's showing you the ground -
  • 19:42 - 19:45
where to step, where to avoid.
  • 19:45 - 19:47
    Fill your heads with it.
  • 19:47 - 19:48
    Fill your minds with it.
  • 19:48 - 19:51
Don't just put it on the walls
  • 19:51 - 19:53
because that's the thing to do.
  • 19:53 - 19:54
    Memorize it.
  • 19:54 - 19:57
    Hide it.
  • 19:57 - 19:59
    (From the room)
  • 19:59 - 20:01
Brother, can I read this verse in Job?
  • 20:01 - 20:06
    In Job 23:11-12, Job says,
  • 20:06 - 20:09
"My foot has held fast to His steps.
  • 20:09 - 20:12
I have kept His way and
    have not turned aside.
  • 20:12 - 20:14
    I have not departed
  • 20:14 - 20:15
from the commandments of His lips.
  • 20:16 - 20:18
I have treasured the words of his mouth
  • 20:18 - 20:22
more than my portion of food."
  • 20:22 - 20:26
    Tim: Yep, and you have
    the New Testament version,
  • 20:26 - 20:27
"Man shall not live by bread alone..."
  • 20:27 - 20:29
    Well, actually that comes
    from the Old as well,
  • 20:29 - 20:32
but it's recited by our Lord
  • 20:32 - 20:34
    in His temptation.
  • 20:34 - 20:37
Man doesn't live by bread alone,
  • 20:37 - 20:39
but by every word that proceeds
    from the mouth of God.
  • 20:39 - 20:40
    Remember that.
  • 20:40 - 20:43
The thing is Scripture is putting
  • 20:43 - 20:47
the Word of God in a
    more important category
  • 20:47 - 20:50
    than food.
  • 20:50 - 20:54
We don't do well without food.
  • 20:54 - 20:56
    We're constantly thinking about it.
  • 20:56 - 20:58
    We need it.
  • 20:58 - 21:00
The thing that you don't want to do -
  • 21:00 - 21:06
what is it that kills physical appetite?
  • 21:06 - 21:07
Have you ever had times in your life
  • 21:07 - 21:09
    when you're not hungry?
  • 21:09 - 21:11
    Never?
  • 21:11 - 21:16
    I mean you get sick?
  • 21:16 - 21:18
You know if you have a child
  • 21:18 - 21:20
and they're not hungry, that's bad.
  • 21:20 - 21:22
    Like just recently the family,
  • 21:22 - 21:24
    their little Abigail -
  • 21:24 - 21:26
    she was in bad shape.
  • 21:26 - 21:29
They had her in ICU and transfusions.
  • 21:29 - 21:33
    She wouldn't eat.
  • 21:33 - 21:35
But you know, that's not healthy.
  • 21:35 - 21:38
    And when you get
    Christians and they don't eat,
  • 21:38 - 21:40
    that's bad.
  • 21:40 - 21:43
    That's your sustenance.
    That's your life.
  • 21:43 - 21:46
    The Word.
  • 21:46 - 21:49
    The Word.
  • 21:49 - 21:52
We had a sister here beforehand,
  • 21:52 - 21:55
    she was talking about
    coming to our church,
  • 21:55 - 21:56
    or coming to the conference,
  • 21:56 - 21:58
    and she was making comments
  • 21:58 - 22:03
about how Scripture seems to be the focus.
  • 22:03 - 22:04
    It's got to be.
  • 22:04 - 22:06
It's our only source of truth.
  • 22:06 - 22:08
    There's no other source
    of truth in this world.
  • 22:08 - 22:09
    This is it.
  • 22:09 - 22:11
God has given us one place.
  • 22:11 - 22:14
This is the only place we
    know for certain that's true.
  • 22:14 - 22:17
Even the stacks of books and stuff -
  • 22:17 - 22:19
yeah, they're written about the Bible,
  • 22:19 - 22:21
but you don't know if they're always right
  • 22:21 - 22:24
    and the way men are
    interpreting it is always right.
  • 22:24 - 22:31
But here, we have a sure foundation.
  • 22:31 - 22:34
I mean, look, this is a treasure.
  • 22:34 - 22:37
    People have died over it.
  • 22:37 - 22:40
    Tyndale - his blood ran
  • 22:40 - 22:44
for trying to put this in our language.
  • 22:44 - 22:46
Many people have given their life
  • 22:46 - 22:47
    for this book.
  • 22:47 - 22:49
    There's no more precious book
  • 22:49 - 22:50
because of the truths held in it.
  • 22:50 - 22:53
These are the truths of life.
  • 22:53 - 22:58
    There's places in the world
  • 22:58 - 23:00
    where they have one Bible
  • 23:00 - 23:03
or a part of one Bible for a whole church.
  • 23:03 - 23:06
    Most of you probably have
    multiple Bibles in your home.
  • 23:06 - 23:11
    Don't take this for granted.
  • 23:11 - 23:14
    Well, I think we'll call
    it a night right there.
  • 23:14 - 23:16
    Let's pray.
  • 23:16 - 23:25
    Father, we thank You that
    You've given us the Word.
  • 23:25 - 23:26
    Lord, help us. Help us.
  • 23:26 - 23:28
We never want to take it for granted.
  • 23:28 - 23:30
    Lord, open it up.
  • 23:30 - 23:31
    May it become more alive,
  • 23:31 - 23:34
    more real, more gripping.
  • 23:34 - 23:38
Lord, give us eyes to see.
  • 23:38 - 23:43
    Give us hearts to dig.
  • 23:43 - 23:47
    I pray for these brothers
    and sisters in this room
  • 23:47 - 23:48
    that they would hide
  • 23:48 - 23:50
and continue to hide the Word of God
  • 23:50 - 23:52
    in their hearts;
  • 23:52 - 23:54
that they would not be hearers only,
  • 23:54 - 23:56
    but doers.
  • 23:56 - 24:00
    Hearers and doers.
  • 24:00 - 24:06
    Lest they deceive themselves.
  • 24:06 - 24:08
Lord, we thank You for this treasure
  • 24:08 - 24:09
    that You've committed to us.
  • 24:09 - 24:12
We thank You in the name
    of our Lord Jesus Christ.
  • 24:12 - 24:13
    Amen.
