Fast Legato Rock Technique #2 (Guitar Lesson RO-012) How to play
-
0:15 - 0:17Hi justin here again
-
0:17 - 0:19This is part 2 of the speed development
-
0:19 - 0:22And what we are gonna look up now is hammer on and flickoffs
-
0:22 - 0:25something you might be familiar with this already.
-
0:25 - 0:30But Im gonna pretend you dont know what hammer on and flickoffs are
-
0:30 - 0:33So, the idea of the hammerons is to play one note
-
0:33 - 0:37and then hammer the finger down very hard further up the string
-
0:37 - 0:40So , it creates the second note without having to pick it
-
0:40 - 0:44So, if i play this first note g using that 3 note string scale
-
0:44 - 0:47without using this hand
-
0:47 - 0:51I can hammer the note down and you can hear that just by hammering the finger down really hard
-
0:51 - 0:56I can get that second note
-
0:56 - 1:00Thats a hammer on!! and its really important that you "hammer it on"
-
1:00 - 1:05Yeah? Thats the whole point. If you just press on you dont get a very clear note
-
1:05 - 1:09The other thing that we are gonna look at today is flickoff
-
1:09 - 1:12Now sometimes it is called a pulloff, but i think it is more of a flicking action
-
1:12 - 1:16So, flick off is exactly the reverse of a hammer on.
-
1:16 - 1:20So if we start with those three fingers down and play this note with our little finger
-
1:20 - 1:25And then flick off the little finger. To release the note onto the second finger
-
1:25 - 1:31And flick off your second finger and then leave the note onto your first finger
-
1:31 - 1:34So, Thats the two techniques that we are gonna be covering
-
1:34 - 1:38What we r gonna do is be playing the scale up and down using these techniques.
-
1:38 - 1:43We are gonna focus just on the hammer ons first and just at pulloffs and then next, we take then togethar
-
1:43 - 1:49So, lets get to a close up now and then I will take you through doing the scale
-
1:49 - 1:51Ok, so here we are with the G major scale
-
1:51 - 1:53Starting off: we are gonna be looking at hammer ons
-
1:53 - 1:57Make sure your fingers are roughly in the right positions already
-
1:57 - 2:01You're gonna pick the first note
-
2:01 - 2:04Then hammer the next note down with your second finger
-
2:04 - 2:09Then next one with your little finger
-
2:09 - 2:12Now we are gonna keep playing the scale now just to get the technique concept
-
2:12 - 2:34Pick, Hammer hammer, pick,hammer hammer, pick,hammer hammer, pick hammer hammer
-
2:34 - 2:41Hopefully you can see that the action of hammering is quite really hammering it down really hard
-
2:41 - 2:49as you can. The idea is to try and get the second two notes, The notes that you hammered on to be around the same volume as the first note
-
2:49 - 2:56You should be able to achieve that. Do that sometimes by picking a little less hard and sometimes by hammering hard (ADVICE) .
-
2:56 - 2:58Thats the two options you have got to even it up,
-
2:58 - 3:04So, what i'd recommend that you practice now is doing each string four times before you move on
-
3:04 - 3:07And doing hammer ons as well on the way back down
-
3:07 - 3:46So you do this
-
3:46 - 3:54Once you have got that fast, May be move it to two
-
3:57 - 4:08If you wanna just have a mock around one time on each string , you can go.
-
4:08 - 4:10(Chuckles) that kinda thing!!
-
4:10 - 4:13That kinda exercise going on
-
4:13 - 4:16Now we are going to look at flick offs
-
4:16 - 4:20So in flickoffs we have little finger and all three fingers rougly in positions first
-
4:20 - 4:50(Pick,flick flick)*6
-
4:55 - 4:56Make sure you get the flicking motion
-
4:56 - 5:25Now try and do the four on each one . The same that we did for hammerons
-
5:29 - 5:38And you do twos again
-
5:38 - 5:43And if you wanna do..Then..
-
5:43 - 5:47Just mocking around with it!!
-
5:47 - 5:49hey, Hope that you all got that cool.
-
5:49 - 5:53Remember that one of the keys to playing fast is by playing slow ( A GREAT ADVICE)
-
5:53 - 6:01So,Please when you are starting to do those hammer on and pulloffs try and do it really slowly.
-
6:01 - 6:09The coolest thing about the fastest guy ,about full on dead metal guitar players is if you slow down their stuff using half speed
-
6:09 - 6:11Or slowing down machine..
-
6:11 - 6:13EVERY NOTE IS ABSOLUTELY PERFECTLY CLEAN
-
6:13 - 6:17Do not try and learn with your fingers wiggling around really fast
-
6:17 - 6:20without the notes sounding clear coz that will just sound shite
-
6:20 - 6:23Make sure you keep each note 100% clear
-
6:23 - 6:26If it is not clear ,if you are doing it too fast, slow down.
-
6:26 - 6:31The speed will happen by itself. May be not by itself but probablt with a little bit of help of a metronome(HUMOR)
-
6:31 - 6:35But generally, the speed will come if you keep things really really clean
-
6:35 - 6:39So, Have fun with that i will see you in a little while for cycling. I dont mean on a bike!!!!!
