The Worth of Christ (Part 1) - Charles Leiter

  • 0:16 - 0:21
    I'm always afraid of
    an introduction like that
  • 0:21 - 0:23
where anything good is said about me,
  • 0:23 - 0:25
lest God need to prove to you
  • 0:25 - 0:30
    that none of it's true.
  • 0:30 - 0:34
We trust He won't have to do that tonight.
  • 0:34 - 0:38
I have what is really in some ways
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    an introductory message tonight,
  • 0:40 - 0:44
so it's not going to be quite as long
  • 0:44 - 0:45
    as some of the others.
  • 0:45 - 0:47
So we're going to take some time here
  • 0:47 - 0:52
    to read actually two
    short chapters of Scripture.
  • 0:52 - 0:58
    Revelation 4 and Revelation 5.
  • 0:58 - 1:03
And so let's read through these now.
  • 1:03 - 1:06
"After these things, I looked, and behold,
  • 1:06 - 1:10
a door standing open in heaven,
  • 1:10 - 1:12
and the first voice which I had heard
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    like the sound of a
    trumpet speaking with me
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    said, 'Come up here,
  • 1:16 - 1:19
and I will show you what must take place
  • 1:19 - 1:22
    after these things.'
  • 1:22 - 1:25
    Immediately, I was in
    the Spirit, and behold,
  • 1:25 - 1:28
a throne was standing in heaven,
  • 1:28 - 1:30
and One sitting on the throne,
  • 1:30 - 1:34
    and He who was sitting
    was like a jasper stone
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    and a sardis in appearance,
  • 1:36 - 1:39
and there was a rainbow around the throne
  • 1:39 - 1:41
    like an emerald in appearance.
  • 1:41 - 1:44
And around the throne were 24 thrones
  • 1:44 - 1:47
and upon the thrones I saw 24 elders
  • 1:47 - 1:50
    sitting clothed in white garments
  • 1:50 - 1:54
and golden crowns on their heads.
  • 1:54 - 1:58
    And from the throne
    proceeds flashes of lightning
  • 1:58 - 2:03
and sounds and peals of thunder."
  • 2:03 - 2:04
I remember one time years ago
  • 2:04 - 2:07
    I was reading through
    the book of Revelation.
  • 2:07 - 2:09
    There's a lot of thunder.
  • 2:09 - 2:10
    And thunder uttering its voice
  • 2:10 - 2:12
    and speaking and so on.
  • 2:12 - 2:14
We had a terrific lightning storm
  • 2:14 - 2:17
there in Kirksville at that time,
  • 2:17 - 2:19
and it brought home to me a little bit
  • 2:19 - 2:21
of the reality of what it's like
  • 2:21 - 2:24
    when thunder utters its voice.
  • 2:24 - 2:25
    And here at this throne,
  • 2:25 - 2:28
    lightning flashes are going out
  • 2:28 - 2:34
and thunder's coming from this throne.
  • 2:34 - 2:37
    Verse 5, "And there
    were seven lamps of fire
  • 2:37 - 2:39
    burning before the throne,
  • 2:39 - 2:43
which are the seven spirits of God.
  • 2:43 - 2:46
And before the throne there was as it were
  • 2:46 - 2:49
a sea of glass like crystal.
  • 2:49 - 2:51
And in the center and around the throne,
  • 2:51 - 2:54
four living creatures full of eyes
  • 2:54 - 2:58
    in front and behind.
  • 2:58 - 3:00
And the first creature was like a lion,
  • 3:00 - 3:02
and the second creature like a calf,
  • 3:02 - 3:04
and the third creature had a face
  • 3:04 - 3:05
    like that of a man,
  • 3:05 - 3:07
    and the fourth creature
  • 3:07 - 3:10
    was like a flying eagle.
  • 3:10 - 3:11
    And the four living creatures,
  • 3:11 - 3:14
each one of them having six wings
  • 3:14 - 3:21
are full of eyes around and within.
  • 3:21 - 3:23
And day and night they do not cease
  • 3:23 - 3:29
to say 'holy, holy, holy is the
    Lord God, the Almighty,
  • 3:29 - 3:33
who was and who is and who is to come.'
  • 3:33 - 3:35
    And when the living creatures
  • 3:35 - 3:37
give glory and honor and thanks
  • 3:37 - 3:39
to Him who sits on the throne,
  • 3:39 - 3:41
to Him who lives forever and ever,
  • 3:41 - 3:44
the 24 elders will fall down before Him
  • 3:44 - 3:45
    who sits on the throne
  • 3:45 - 3:48
    and will worship Him who
    lives forever and ever
  • 3:48 - 3:51
    and will cast their crowns
    before the throne
  • 3:51 - 3:54
    saying, "Worthy art Thou,
  • 3:54 - 3:56
    our Lord and our God,
  • 3:56 - 3:58
to receive glory and honor and power,
  • 3:58 - 4:02
for Thou didst create all things,
  • 4:02 - 4:05
and because of Thy will they existed
  • 4:05 - 4:06
    and were created.'
  • 4:06 - 4:11
And I saw in the right hand of Him
who sat on the throne a book,
  • 4:11 - 4:14
written inside and on the back,
  • 4:14 - 4:16
    sealed up with seven seals.
  • 4:16 - 4:18
I saw a strong angel proclaim
  • 4:18 - 4:20
    with a loud voice,
  • 4:20 - 4:24
'Who is worthy to open the book
  • 4:24 - 4:26
    and to break its seals?'
  • 4:26 - 4:28
And no one in heaven or on the earth
  • 4:28 - 4:30
or under the earth was able
  • 4:30 - 4:35
to open the book or to look into it.
  • 4:35 - 4:36
    I began to weep greatly
  • 4:36 - 4:40
because no one was found worthy
  • 4:40 - 4:43
to open the book or to look into it.
  • 4:43 - 4:45
And one of the elders said to me,
  • 4:45 - 4:49
    'Stop weeping. Behold, the Lion
  • 4:49 - 4:52
that is from the tribe of Judah,
  • 4:52 - 4:54
the root of David has overcome
  • 4:54 - 4:58
so as to open the book
    and its seven seals.'
  • 4:58 - 5:01
And I saw between the throne
  • 5:01 - 5:05
    with the four living
    creatures and the elders
  • 5:05 - 5:09
a Lamb standing as if slain."
  • 5:09 - 5:11
    I don't know what that means -
  • 5:11 - 5:14
    "standing as if slain."
  • 5:14 - 5:16
"Having seven horns and seven eyes
  • 5:16 - 5:20
which are the seven spirits of God
  • 5:20 - 5:22
sent out into all the earth.
  • 5:22 - 5:23
And He came and He took it
  • 5:23 - 5:27
out of the right hand of
Him who sat on the throne."
  • 5:27 - 5:30
    That's a fearsome thing, isn't it?
  • 5:30 - 5:31
"And when He had taken the book,
  • 5:31 - 5:34
    the four living creatures
    and the 24 elders
  • 5:34 - 5:37
    fell down before the Lamb,
  • 5:37 - 5:39
    having each one a harp
  • 5:39 - 5:41
and golden bowls full of incense
  • 5:41 - 5:45
which are the prayers of the saints.
  • 5:45 - 5:47
And they sang a new song saying,
  • 5:47 - 5:49
'Worthy art Thou to take the book
  • 5:49 - 5:52
and to break its seals, for Thou was slain
  • 5:52 - 5:55
and didst purchase for God with Thy blood
  • 5:55 - 5:58
men from every tribe and tongue
  • 5:58 - 5:59
    and people and nation,
  • 5:59 - 6:00
and Thou hast made them to be
  • 6:00 - 6:03
a kingdom and priests to our God.
  • 6:03 - 6:05
And they will reign upon the earth.'
  • 6:05 - 6:07
And I looked and I heard the voice
  • 6:07 - 6:10
of many angels around the throne
  • 6:10 - 6:13
and the living creatures and the elders
  • 6:13 - 6:16
and the number of them (these angels)
  • 6:16 - 6:20
    was myriads of myriads
  • 6:20 - 6:23
    and thousands of thousands..."
  • 6:23 - 6:24
    That's millions.
  • 6:24 - 6:26
    Millions of angels.
  • 6:26 - 6:28
    "Saying with a loud voice,
  • 6:28 - 6:30
'Worthy is the Lamb that was slain
  • 6:30 - 6:33
to receive power and riches and wisdom
  • 6:33 - 6:37
    and might and honor
    and glory and blessing.
  • 6:37 - 6:39
And every created thing which is in heaven
  • 6:39 - 6:41
and on the earth and under the earth
  • 6:41 - 6:44
and on the sea and all
things in them, I heard say,
  • 6:44 - 6:46
'To Him who sits on the throne
  • 6:46 - 6:48
    and to the Lamb
  • 6:48 - 6:50
be blessing and honor and glory
  • 6:50 - 6:51
    and dominion forever and ever.'
  • 6:51 - 6:56
    And the four living creatures
    kept saying, 'Amen.'
  • 6:56 - 7:02
And the elders fell down and worshiped."
  • 7:02 - 7:05
As the Lord wills, I'd like to
    speak to you these days
  • 7:05 - 7:13
on the subject of the worthiness of God.
  • 7:13 - 7:15
The elders here have given us leeway -
  • 7:15 - 7:17
they kind of set a theme, but they gave us
  • 7:17 - 7:20
    leeway to speak on anything
  • 7:20 - 7:23
    that it seemed that the
    Lord was leading us to.
  • 7:23 - 7:26
And this is all I have.
  • 7:26 - 7:27
    I need your prayers.
  • 7:27 - 7:30
It's a worthy theme to speak
    on the worthiness of God,
  • 7:30 - 7:33
    but I'm certainly not
    worthy to speak on it.
  • 7:33 - 7:36
    The worthiness of God.
  • 7:36 - 7:40
In these chapters, and I've read them,
  • 7:40 - 7:43
because they give us a glimpse
  • 7:43 - 7:45
of just how worthy God is.
  • 7:45 - 7:48
In these chapters, we see the Triune God
  • 7:48 - 7:55
    described in glorious symbolic language
  • 7:55 - 7:58
    surrounded by millions and millions
  • 7:58 - 8:03
of worshipers declaring how worthy He is.
  • 8:03 - 8:07
    God the Father's described in v. 2-6
  • 8:07 - 8:10
    of chapter 4.
  • 8:10 - 8:12
And He's seated on a great throne
  • 8:12 - 8:15
    with flashes of lightning
    and peals of thunder
  • 8:15 - 8:19
and seas of glass and emerald rainbows
  • 8:19 - 8:21
    and living creatures.
  • 8:21 - 8:24
God the Son is described in chapter 5,
  • 8:24 - 8:29
    verses 5 and 6 and
    following as a great Lion.
  • 8:29 - 8:32
And once this Lion is introduced,
  • 8:32 - 8:35
we turn to look at Him and we see a Lamb
  • 8:35 - 8:39
    standing as if slain.
  • 8:39 - 8:41
And then God the Holy Spirit appears
  • 8:41 - 8:46
in chapter 4:5 as these seven mysterious
  • 8:46 - 8:48
    lamps of fire.
  • 8:48 - 8:51
And in chapter 5:6, He appears
  • 8:51 - 8:54
as the seven eyes of the Lamb
  • 8:54 - 8:57
which are the seven spirits of God
  • 8:57 - 8:59
which are sent out into all the earth.
  • 8:59 - 9:01
And then we see God's creation
  • 9:01 - 9:03
from the very highest to the very lowest
  • 9:03 - 9:06
    worshiping prostrate before
    this worthy triune God.
  • 9:06 - 9:11
So I want to begin by asking a question:
  • 9:11 - 9:14
    Just how worthy is God?
  • 9:14 - 9:16
    How worthy is God?
  • 9:16 - 9:17
And we can see the answer
  • 9:17 - 9:20
    just by pronouncing the
    word a little differently.
  • 9:20 - 9:24
    How worth-y is God?
  • 9:24 - 9:26
That's where the word worthy comes from.
  • 9:26 - 9:28
It has the word "worth" in it.
  • 9:28 - 9:32
    How much is God worth?
  • 9:32 - 9:34
    The word "worthy" literally means
  • 9:34 - 9:36
    having worth, value, or merit.
  • 9:36 - 9:38
So how much is God worth?
  • 9:38 - 9:40
Is He worth a million dollars?
  • 9:40 - 9:44
    How much is God worth?
  • 9:44 - 9:46
There was a time when the Holy Spirit
  • 9:46 - 9:48
was moving in power there in New England
  • 9:48 - 9:53
and Christ was very real and near
  • 9:53 - 9:55
    to various ones.
  • 9:55 - 9:58
And Sarah Edwards was going through
  • 9:58 - 9:59
    such a time as that,
  • 9:59 - 10:02
    and one of her neighbors
    was visiting with her
  • 10:02 - 10:04
    and said this:
  • 10:04 - 10:07
    "One smile from Christ
  • 10:07 - 10:10
is worth a thousand million pounds."
  • 10:10 - 10:12
    "One smile from Christ
  • 10:12 - 10:15
is worth a thousand million pounds."
  • 10:15 - 10:16
And this is what she says,
  • 10:16 - 10:19
    "The words affected me exceedingly
  • 10:19 - 10:21
and in a manner which I cannot express.
  • 10:21 - 10:26
I had a strong sense of the infinite worth
  • 10:26 - 10:28
    of Christ's approval and love
  • 10:28 - 10:30
    and at the same time
  • 10:30 - 10:32
of the grossness of the comparison.
  • 10:32 - 10:34
    It only astonished me
  • 10:34 - 10:36
    that anyone could compare
  • 10:36 - 10:40
    a smile of Christ to
    any earthly treasure."
  • 10:40 - 10:41
    A thousand million pounds?
  • 10:41 - 10:49
    She said how could you
    think of something so base?
  • 10:49 - 10:50
She said, "Towards night I had
  • 10:50 - 10:54
a deep sense of the awful greatness of God
  • 10:54 - 10:56
and felt with what humility and reverence
  • 10:56 - 11:00
we ought to behave ourselves before Him."
  • 11:00 - 11:01
It only astonished me she said.
  • 11:01 - 11:05
"Well, if a smile of Christ
  • 11:05 - 11:06
    is of infinite worth,
  • 11:06 - 11:11
how much worth is Christ Himself?"
  • 11:11 - 11:12
    How much is God worth?
  • 11:12 - 11:14
    Well, He's of infinite worth.
  • 11:14 - 11:17
    He is infinitely worthy.
  • 11:17 - 11:19
So that means that you take
  • 11:19 - 11:22
    the entire created order
  • 11:22 - 11:24
and stack it all together at once
  • 11:24 - 11:27
and multiply it by a million times
  • 11:27 - 11:30
and put it in the balance against God -
  • 11:30 - 11:33
it's nothing and less than nothing.
  • 11:33 - 11:38
There is nothing whatsoever of comparison
  • 11:38 - 11:41
    because God is infinitely worthy.
  • 11:41 - 11:44
    Now, this one fact affects
  • 11:44 - 11:48
    literally everything in life.
  • 11:48 - 11:50
    And I hope that we'll
    see this in a measure
  • 11:50 - 11:53
during the next few days, but notice this:
  • 11:53 - 11:55
    God's infinite worthiness is described
  • 11:55 - 11:58
in these two chapters that we've read
  • 11:58 - 12:00
    in terms of three songs,
  • 12:00 - 12:05
    or you might say three
    outpourings of worship.
  • 12:05 - 12:07
The first one might be called
  • 12:07 - 12:09
    the song of God's being.
  • 12:09 - 12:12
Now notice this in v. 8-9 of chapter 4.
  • 12:12 - 12:14
It says, "The four living creatures
  • 12:14 - 12:17
each one of them having six wings
  • 12:17 - 12:19
are full of eyes around and within
  • 12:19 - 12:21
and day and night they do not cease to say
  • 12:21 - 12:25
    'holy, holy, holy is the
    Lord God, the Almighty.'"
  • 12:25 - 12:28
Day and night, they don't cease.
  • 12:28 - 12:33
    Twenty-four seven.
    All the time. Constantly.
  • 12:33 - 12:36
    "'Holy, holy, holy is the
    Lord God, the Almighty,
  • 12:36 - 12:39
    who was and who is
  • 12:39 - 12:41
    and who is to come.'
  • 12:41 - 12:43
And when the living creatures give glory
  • 12:43 - 12:44
and honor and thanks to Him
  • 12:44 - 12:46
    who sits on the throne..."
  • 12:46 - 12:47
Now this is what's going on:
  • 12:47 - 12:50
    Glory, honor, and thanks.
  • 12:50 - 12:56
    And these outpourings of worship
  • 12:56 - 12:57
have to do with God's being.
  • 12:57 - 12:59
Now, I want us to notice two things here.
  • 12:59 - 13:03
First of all, this outpouring of worship
  • 13:03 - 13:08
    comes from those who
    are themselves sinless.
  • 13:08 - 13:11
    They've never committed one sin.
  • 13:11 - 13:13
And yet, they are around the throne
  • 13:13 - 13:15
    all the time constantly saying,
  • 13:15 - 13:18
    "holy, holy, holy is the
    Lord God Almighty."
  • 13:18 - 13:19
    Why is that?
  • 13:19 - 13:22
    Because even though they have
    not committed even one sin,
  • 13:22 - 13:26
He is so much more holy than they are
  • 13:26 - 13:28
that they worship Him for His holiness.
  • 13:28 - 13:32
Now how in the world can that be?
  • 13:32 - 13:34
They have never committed a sin
  • 13:34 - 13:38
    and yet God is infinitely
    more holy than they are.
  • 13:38 - 13:40
    Well, because you know holiness
  • 13:40 - 13:42
has to do with the idea of separateness
  • 13:42 - 13:44
    or separation.
  • 13:44 - 13:48
    (You had) holy vessels
    in the Old Testament.
  • 13:48 - 13:51
You had pots and pans and everything
  • 13:51 - 13:54
    that were called holy.
  • 13:54 - 13:56
They had no moral character in themselves
  • 13:56 - 13:59
    but they had been set
    apart from common use,
  • 13:59 - 14:00
    set apart for God.
  • 14:00 - 14:04
    They were separated out
    from everything else.
  • 14:04 - 14:07
    That's the idea of holiness.
  • 14:07 - 14:10
I think in the human realm,
  • 14:10 - 14:11
we can see this a little bit.
  • 14:11 - 14:14
I like to think about Babe Ruth.
  • 14:14 - 14:16
You know, Babe Ruth's jersey -
  • 14:16 - 14:18
    he was number 3 -
  • 14:18 - 14:23
and his number was set apart.
  • 14:23 - 14:26
Nobody who comes to that team
  • 14:26 - 14:28
and wants to put on his jersey
  • 14:28 - 14:30
and say I'd like to be number 3 -
  • 14:30 - 14:31
    you can't be number 3.
  • 14:31 - 14:33
    You can't be number 3? Why's that?
  • 14:33 - 14:35
    Because that's holy.
  • 14:35 - 14:38
    That's been set apart
  • 14:38 - 14:41
    by this man's incredible
    performance, you see.
  • 14:41 - 14:43
Well, that's in the realm of sports.
  • 14:43 - 14:46
I guess they did that with Michael
    Jordan too, didn't they?
  • 14:46 - 14:47
    23 - that's set apart.
  • 14:47 - 14:50
    Nobody else gets that.
  • 14:50 - 14:54
If you want to make it a little closer,
  • 14:54 - 14:56
you could think in terms of the way
  • 14:56 - 14:58
    things have been
    hallowed like Lincoln said,
  • 14:58 - 15:01
that no one can hallow this ground
  • 15:01 - 15:03
any more than what these guys have
  • 15:03 - 15:05
    by spilling their blood.
  • 15:05 - 15:08
And when we think to stand on the spot
  • 15:08 - 15:09
    where people have died
  • 15:09 - 15:11
so that we could have liberty,
  • 15:11 - 15:14
that's holy ground in some sense.
  • 15:14 - 15:16
Take it a little bit further.
  • 15:16 - 15:18
I know some of you probably have read
  • 15:18 - 15:20
    about the Anabaptist's
  • 15:20 - 15:22
and some of the things they suffered.
  • 15:22 - 15:24
One of the things that happened was
  • 15:24 - 15:26
that the people, when they were
  • 15:26 - 15:29
being burned at the stake were preaching.
  • 15:29 - 15:31
    And so many people were
    converted through the preaching
  • 15:31 - 15:34
    that they got a thing
    called a tongue screw.
  • 15:34 - 15:36
    And it's a piece of metal -
  • 15:36 - 15:37
maybe you've seen pictures of it.
  • 15:37 - 15:39
They screw that on their tongue -
  • 15:39 - 15:41
a big chunk of metal on their tongue,
  • 15:41 - 15:44
    so that they couldn't preach.
  • 15:44 - 15:47
    That shows the power
    of the Gospel, doesn't it?
  • 15:47 - 15:49
And so they screw that on their tongue
  • 15:49 - 15:53
    and after their bodies
    were burned to ashes,
  • 15:53 - 15:57
    their relatives would
    retrieve that tongue screw.
  • 15:57 - 16:00
    And they'd pass it down
    through the family.
  • 16:00 - 16:02
    Now imagine being a wife
  • 16:02 - 16:04
or being a son who your dad
  • 16:04 - 16:06
    died in the flames
  • 16:06 - 16:09
    wearing that tongue screw.
  • 16:09 - 16:11
That thing takes on a different meaning.
  • 16:11 - 16:13
You don't toss it around and play with it.
  • 16:13 - 16:16
    There's something holy about it.
  • 16:16 - 16:17
    Now these are weak analogies
  • 16:17 - 16:19
in the human realm, but you see,
  • 16:19 - 16:23
holiness is the idea of separation.
  • 16:23 - 16:27
    God is utterly separate.
  • 16:27 - 16:30
    He's infinitely separate from us.
  • 16:30 - 16:37
He's the Creator. We are creatures.
  • 16:37 - 16:39
If I could just get across a little bit
  • 16:39 - 16:42
what a different realm God is in.
  • 16:42 - 16:45
He doesn't have to exert Himself
  • 16:45 - 16:49
    in order to be.
  • 16:49 - 16:53
They say that shrews are so voracious
  • 16:53 - 16:55
    that if you put two
    shrews in a jar overnight,
  • 16:55 - 16:58
    in the morning, you'll
    only have one shrew.
  • 16:58 - 17:01
    The reason is that they've
    got to eat constantly
  • 17:01 - 17:03
    just to stay alive.
  • 17:03 - 17:05
And beloved, that's the way we are.
  • 17:05 - 17:07
My wife and I were talking
about this on the way down.
  • 17:07 - 17:11
    Basically, we're all like
    people on a ventilator.
  • 17:11 - 17:13
We've got to be kept going all the time
  • 17:13 - 17:17
    from power from the outside.
  • 17:17 - 17:19
But what kind of Being is this
  • 17:19 - 17:23
    who lives on His own
    power from the inside?
  • 17:23 - 17:28
Who has no effort whatsover to be?
  • 17:28 - 17:29
    He just is.
  • 17:29 - 17:34
You see, He's in a different
    realm entirely than mankind.
  • 17:34 - 17:36
    He is the self-existent One.
  • 17:36 - 17:39
    He's infinitely set apart.
  • 17:39 - 17:41
You see, when we talk about
  • 17:41 - 17:43
    the Creator-creature distinction,
  • 17:43 - 17:46
    we're not talking about
    something quantitative.
  • 17:46 - 17:50
    We're not saying God's just a
lot, lot, lot bigger than we are.
  • 17:50 - 17:53
    No, we're talking about
    something qualitative.
  • 17:53 - 17:55
He's in a different realm entirely.
  • 17:55 - 17:58
He is just as high above the archangel
  • 17:58 - 18:01
as He is above the earthworm.
  • 18:01 - 18:03
As you go up, you know,
  • 18:03 - 18:04
    I used to study math
  • 18:04 - 18:06
and we'd make a very stupid statement.
  • 18:06 - 18:08
    They've stopped making that now.
  • 18:08 - 18:09
    They're much more careful,
  • 18:09 - 18:12
    but we used to say,
    well, as that gets smaller,
  • 18:12 - 18:15
the value of that thing goes to infinity.
  • 18:15 - 18:16
    It goes to infinity.
  • 18:16 - 18:18
    Well, that's a nonsense statement
  • 18:18 - 18:20
    because once you get out
there as far as you are,
  • 18:20 - 18:23
you've still got that much farther to go.
  • 18:23 - 18:26
    I mean, when you even
    say the word "infinity"
  • 18:26 - 18:28
in your mind you draw a circle around it.
  • 18:28 - 18:30
    You can't do that.
  • 18:30 - 18:31
    You can picture a line,
  • 18:31 - 18:33
but you can't picture a line
  • 18:33 - 18:35
that has no end on either end.
  • 18:35 - 18:37
    You can't picture that.
  • 18:37 - 18:40
    God is infinitely above us.
  • 18:40 - 18:46
That means He's holy in an absolute way.
  • 18:46 - 18:48
And here's these sinless creatures -
  • 18:48 - 18:51
no telling what kind of power they had
  • 18:51 - 18:53
    in relation to us -
  • 18:53 - 18:55
but there's an infinite gulf between them
  • 18:55 - 18:57
    and the Creator.
  • 18:57 - 18:59
And so they can't do anything but say,
  • 18:59 - 19:02
"Holy, holy, holy... holy, holy, holy."
  • 19:02 - 19:06
    He's infinitely separate.
  • 19:06 - 19:07
    Now notice this too,
  • 19:07 - 19:10
    that this outpouring of worship
  • 19:10 - 19:11
    mentions nothing about anything
  • 19:11 - 19:17
God has done or may do.
  • 19:17 - 19:18
    The outpouring of worship
  • 19:18 - 19:22
relates to who He is in Himself.
  • 19:22 - 19:25
They're not thanking God for benefits
  • 19:25 - 19:26
    they've received from Him.
  • 19:26 - 19:29
They're just worshiping Him for who He is
  • 19:29 - 19:33
    in Himself apart from
    anything that He's ever done.
  • 19:33 - 19:36
And I think this is an amazing phrase here
  • 19:36 - 19:39
where it says in verse 9,
  • 19:39 - 19:41
    "The living creatures give glory
  • 19:41 - 19:42
    and honor and thanks..."
  • 19:42 - 19:44
    They're thanking Him
  • 19:44 - 19:47
    for being who He is.
  • 19:47 - 19:50
Well, God being God can't be anything
  • 19:50 - 19:51
    but who He is.
  • 19:51 - 19:53
But who are you going to thank
  • 19:53 - 19:55
    if you don't thank Him?
  • 19:55 - 19:58
    (incomplete thought)
  • 19:58 - 19:59
    Isn't this a fearful thing?
  • 19:59 - 20:03
    You're before God - and
have you ever felt this way?
  • 20:03 - 20:05
If you're a Christian, you have.
  • 20:05 - 20:07
God, I thank You, I thank You,
  • 20:07 - 20:11
thank You for being who You are!
  • 20:11 - 20:14
I'm so thankful that You are who You are.
  • 20:14 - 20:17
I worship You for being who You are.
  • 20:17 - 20:21
Apart from anything You do for anybody.
  • 20:21 - 20:24
That has to do with God's being.
  • 20:24 - 20:26
    He's worthy!
  • 20:26 - 20:27
He would be worthy if He had not
  • 20:27 - 20:32
    ever created anything -
    He would be worthy.
  • 20:32 - 20:35
But there's a second song here.
  • 20:35 - 20:38
And that's the song of God's creation.
  • 20:38 - 20:41
And that comes in v. 10-11 of chapter 4.
  • 20:41 - 20:44
The 24 elders will fall down before Him
  • 20:44 - 20:47
    who sits on the throne
    and will worship Him
  • 20:47 - 20:49
    who lives forever and ever
  • 20:49 - 20:51
    and will cast their crowns
    before the throne
  • 20:51 - 20:54
    saying, "Worthy art Thou
  • 20:54 - 20:56
our Lord and our God to receive glory
  • 20:56 - 20:58
    and honor and power,
  • 20:58 - 21:01
for Thou didst create all things
  • 21:01 - 21:04
and because of Thy will they existed
  • 21:04 - 21:06
    and were created."
  • 21:06 - 21:08
    Now think of this.
  • 21:08 - 21:09
    We're talking about worthiness.
  • 21:09 - 21:11
He says worthy. They say worthy
  • 21:11 - 21:12
    right there in v. 11 don't they?
  • 21:12 - 21:17
Worthy art Thou because You created.
  • 21:17 - 21:19
    The worthiness of God, beloved,
  • 21:19 - 21:22
    in terms of His creation.
  • 21:22 - 21:26
The one who spoke by an act of the will
  • 21:26 - 21:30
    spoke all things into existence
  • 21:30 - 21:32
    out of nothing.
  • 21:32 - 21:34
If there was some way that we could
  • 21:34 - 21:36
    just stand outside of everything
  • 21:36 - 21:38
and watch it happen - God speak
  • 21:38 - 21:40
everything into existence out of nothing,
  • 21:40 - 21:43
    it would be reason to
    fall down before Him.
  • 21:43 - 21:47
    It would show His infinite
    worthiness of worship
  • 21:47 - 21:53
because He's the Creator of all things.
  • 21:53 - 21:55
    You know, one theologian said,
  • 21:55 - 21:59
well, because the universe is not infinite
  • 21:59 - 22:01
    it displays God's power,
    but it doesn't display
  • 22:01 - 22:04
    His infinite power.
  • 22:04 - 22:06
    Right?
  • 22:06 - 22:07
    You could say, well, look,
  • 22:07 - 22:11
suppose God had just created this desk.
  • 22:11 - 22:12
    It would display His power,
  • 22:12 - 22:14
    but it wouldn't display
    His infinite power.
  • 22:14 - 22:16
But I'd like to ask you a question.
  • 22:16 - 22:17
How much power does it take
  • 22:17 - 22:21
    to call this desk into
    existence out of nothing?
  • 22:21 - 22:24
If you don't think that's infinite power,
  • 22:24 - 22:26
I don't know what it would be.
  • 22:26 - 22:27
    You see, He spoke.
  • 22:27 - 22:29
    He called things into being.
  • 22:29 - 22:34
    He called them into being by speaking;
  • 22:34 - 22:36
by an act of the will.
  • 22:36 - 22:39
Now, not only did He call
    this desk into existence,
  • 22:39 - 22:42
    but He called the entire
    universe into existence
  • 22:42 - 22:51
a 15 billion light year radius.
  • 22:51 - 22:54
They look at this and they worship.
  • 22:54 - 22:57
And I say, if somehow you could
    get outside of everything
  • 22:57 - 22:59
    and see it happen,
  • 22:59 - 23:03
    you would have infinite
reason to worship such a God.
  • 23:03 - 23:08
But the fact is, we are
    part of what He created.
  • 23:08 - 23:12
    We ourselves were
    spoken into existence by Him.
  • 23:12 - 23:15
Now you have even more reason -
  • 23:15 - 23:18
    if there could be even
    more reason to worship Him
  • 23:18 - 23:22
    because you owe literally
    everything to Him.
  • 23:22 - 23:25
    You exist!
  • 23:25 - 23:26
    You would not exist,
  • 23:26 - 23:27
    you would not be here
  • 23:27 - 23:31
    apart from God speaking
    you into existence.
  • 23:31 - 23:34
How much worship do you owe a God
  • 23:34 - 23:36
    that spoke you into existence?
  • 23:36 - 23:38
You owe your being to Him,
  • 23:38 - 23:41
    not to mention your well-being.
  • 23:41 - 23:42
The fact you've got clothes on,
  • 23:42 - 23:44
    you've got your sanity,
  • 23:44 - 23:47
and whatever degree of health you have,
  • 23:47 - 23:50
    you owe Him everything -
    literally everything.
  • 23:50 - 23:52
    So I say here again,
  • 23:52 - 23:55
    it's almost like can you
    pile any more on this?
  • 23:55 - 23:59
He's infinitely worthy just for who He is.
  • 23:59 - 24:03
But how much more worthy is He
  • 24:03 - 24:05
of the worship of those whom He has
  • 24:05 - 24:09
called out of nothingness into existence?
  • 24:09 - 24:11
I mean, you can't be any more
  • 24:11 - 24:21
    worthy of worship than
    by your creatures, you see.
  • 24:21 - 24:26
    We owe Him literally everything.
  • 24:26 - 24:28
And so how much more is He worthy
  • 24:28 - 24:31
    of all glory, honor,
    and worship from those
  • 24:31 - 24:33
whom He has called into existence?
  • 24:33 - 24:37
    But there's a third song
    here, isn't there?
  • 24:37 - 24:40
    V. 8-12 of chapter 5.
  • 24:40 - 24:44
And this is a song of God's redemption.
  • 24:44 - 24:48
Not only is God infinitely worthy
  • 24:48 - 24:50
    because of His own being
  • 24:50 - 24:53
and because He is the Creator
  • 24:53 - 24:56
    as opposed to the creation,
  • 24:56 - 24:59
but He's infinitely worthy because of
  • 24:59 - 25:01
this glorious redemption that He has
  • 25:01 - 25:09
accomplished in the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • 25:09 - 25:11
    Notice verses 11 and 12.
  • 25:11 - 25:13
"I looked and I heard the voice
  • 25:13 - 25:16
of many angels around the throne
  • 25:16 - 25:18
and the living creatures and the elders,
  • 25:18 - 25:20
    and the number of them
    was myriads of myriads."
  • 25:20 - 25:23
Now we're talking about the angels here.
  • 25:23 - 25:26
    "And thousands of thousands."
  • 25:26 - 25:30
    Millions of angels singing here.
  • 25:30 - 25:34
    Brother Michael mentioned
    this thing of the angels
  • 25:34 - 25:40
    watching with awe and wonder
  • 25:40 - 25:42
as the second Person of the Trinity comes
  • 25:42 - 25:47
    down, down, down -
  • 25:47 - 25:52
the infinite, holy One comes down to earth
  • 25:52 - 25:54
and is born in a stable.
  • 25:54 - 25:56
And they watch Him grow up as a little boy
  • 25:56 - 26:00
    working in a carpenter's shop.
  • 26:00 - 26:05
And they see Him allow His creatures
  • 26:05 - 26:09
to spit on Him and mock Him.
  • 26:09 - 26:11
And they watch Him as He stumbles
  • 26:11 - 26:12
    under the cross
  • 26:12 - 26:17
and somebody helps Him carry that cross.
  • 26:17 - 26:19
And they watch Him as He dies
  • 26:19 - 26:23
on the cross for those sinners.
  • 26:23 - 26:25
And they look at this and they fall down
  • 26:25 - 26:28
and worship Him for what He's doing.
  • 26:28 - 26:34
    They fall prostrate just for
    what they've seen Him do.
  • 26:34 - 26:37
    Now beloved, what I
want to get at is this:
  • 26:37 - 26:43
    Those angels don't "get anything"
    out of Him doing that.
  • 26:43 - 26:45
    He's worthy of worship
  • 26:45 - 26:48
    whether you end up
going to hell in the end,
  • 26:48 - 26:51
    He's still worthy of
    worship for what He's done.
  • 26:51 - 26:53
If you look at what He did on the cross,
  • 26:53 - 26:56
if you look at the grace
    of the Lord Jesus Christ,
  • 26:56 - 26:58
    He owes no one anything!
  • 26:58 - 27:01
He doesn't need to save anybody.
  • 27:01 - 27:03
    Everybody in this world
  • 27:03 - 27:04
ought to bow down before Him
  • 27:04 - 27:05
    and worship Him
  • 27:05 - 27:08
just because of what He's done
  • 27:08 - 27:11
whether you get anything out of it or not.
  • 27:11 - 27:13
    He's worthy of worship
  • 27:13 - 27:17
for that act that He did of redemption.
  • 27:17 - 27:20
Well, if that's true in itself,
  • 27:20 - 27:24
then again, pile infinites on infinites.
  • 27:24 - 27:28
How much is He worthy of our worship
  • 27:28 - 27:31
who have benefited from this redemption?
  • 27:31 - 27:33
If the angels are worshiping Him
  • 27:33 - 27:35
and they get nothing out of it
  • 27:35 - 27:36
    in terms of redemption,
  • 27:36 - 27:39
how much more ought we who have
  • 27:39 - 27:40
    been cleansed by His blood,
  • 27:40 - 27:42
how much do we owe Him?
  • 27:42 - 27:44
How worthy is He of our worship?
  • 27:44 - 27:46
    He's infinitely worthy.
  • 27:46 - 27:48
    Time over time over time.
  • 27:48 - 27:51
    He's infinitely worthy.
  • 27:51 - 27:53
    Love so amazing, so divine,
  • 27:53 - 28:01
demands my soul, my life, my all.
  • 28:01 - 28:06
I mean, we deserve to die
  • 28:06 - 28:08
and the death angel's coming in
  • 28:08 - 28:11
    and He interposes with His
    blood on the doorposts,
  • 28:11 - 28:13
and while we hear the cries going up
  • 28:13 - 28:15
    from the Egyptian households,
  • 28:15 - 28:18
    we're still alive!
  • 28:18 - 28:23
Don't you think you ought to fall
down before Him and worship Him?
  • 28:23 - 28:25
You see how it's just piled upon -
  • 28:25 - 28:26
    it's infinite.
  • 28:26 - 28:30
    It's not that God's worthy -
    He's infinitely worthy.
  • 28:30 - 28:35
    He really is infinitely worthy.
  • 28:35 - 28:38
Now these chapters end very fitly then
  • 28:38 - 28:39
    in verses 13 and 14
  • 28:39 - 28:42
with the entire created order worshiping
  • 28:42 - 28:45
    the Triune God for the
    totality of His person
  • 28:45 - 28:48
    and His works.
  • 28:48 - 28:51
    I haven't said anything up
    to this point about this,
  • 28:51 - 28:52
but I'm sure many of you realize
  • 28:52 - 28:55
    that the word "worship"
  • 28:55 - 28:58
comes from this same word: "worth."
  • 28:58 - 29:00
    Worth-ship.
  • 29:00 - 29:02
    It's literally acknowledging,
  • 29:02 - 29:05
declaring the worth of the one
  • 29:05 - 29:08
    you are worth-shiping.
  • 29:08 - 29:11
    And beloved, He is worthy.
  • 29:11 - 29:17
    Now, in light of God's
    infinite worthiness,
  • 29:17 - 29:19
we should not be surprised to find
  • 29:19 - 29:21
    that this has implications
  • 29:21 - 29:25
    that permeate literally everything.
  • 29:25 - 29:27
That's what we're going to be looking at,
  • 29:27 - 29:29
Lord willing, in the next few days.
  • 29:29 - 29:31
    That's what we would expect.
  • 29:31 - 29:35
After all, God isn't one among many.
  • 29:35 - 29:38
    He's the center and the
    foundation of everything.
  • 29:38 - 29:42
And when He moves, everything moves.
  • 29:42 - 29:46
So, what are some of the implications
  • 29:46 - 29:48
of the infinite worthiness of God?
  • 29:48 - 29:50
I just want to mention one tonight
  • 29:50 - 29:51
    before we close.
  • 29:51 - 29:53
We'll be looking at several of these,
  • 29:53 - 29:54
    Lord willing, but tonight,
  • 29:54 - 29:59
I just want us to consider one.
  • 29:59 - 30:04
    First implication of the
    infinite worthiness of God is:
  • 30:04 - 30:08
    What is the reason that
    God does what He does?
  • 30:08 - 30:09
    Or you might say,
  • 30:09 - 30:12
what is the chief end of God's actions?
  • 30:12 - 30:15
Why does He do what He does?
  • 30:15 - 30:18
And the chief end of God's actions
  • 30:18 - 30:21
    is God Himself.
  • 30:21 - 30:23
    Because He's infinitely worthy,
  • 30:23 - 30:26
    it would be wrong, shall we say;
  • 30:26 - 30:28
    it would be irrational,
  • 30:28 - 30:32
it would be impossible for Him
  • 30:32 - 30:35
    to center on anything as
    being the ultimate worth
  • 30:35 - 30:38
    except Himself.
  • 30:38 - 30:40
So the purpose for His actions
  • 30:40 - 30:42
    is always to glorify Himself
  • 30:42 - 30:45
    first and foremost.
  • 30:45 - 30:46
    The reason He does anything
  • 30:46 - 30:50
    is to glorify Himself.
  • 30:50 - 30:52
The chief end of all God's acts
  • 30:52 - 30:54
    is to glorify Himself,
  • 30:54 - 30:57
to do what pleases Him and glorifies Him.
  • 30:57 - 30:59
Why did God create the world?
  • 30:59 - 31:01
He created it for His own glory.
  • 31:01 - 31:02
Why did He permit the fall?
  • 31:02 - 31:04
    For His own glory.
  • 31:04 - 31:06
Why does He choose to save some?
  • 31:06 - 31:07
    For His own glory.
  • 31:07 - 31:10
    Why does He choose to
    leave some in their sins?
  • 31:10 - 31:13
    For His own glory.
  • 31:13 - 31:14
    Everything He does.
  • 31:14 - 31:16
    Now what's God's glory?
  • 31:16 - 31:20
    It's the manifestation of
    His excellencies.
  • 31:20 - 31:25
    He creates the world to
    manifest His excellencies.
  • 31:25 - 31:28
    He saves people in order
    to manifest His excellencies.
  • 31:28 - 31:30
    He judges unrepentant sinners
  • 31:30 - 31:35
in order to manifest His excellencies.
  • 31:35 - 31:37
Now the Bible is full of these things
  • 31:37 - 31:38
and I'm not going to take the time.
  • 31:38 - 31:42
I actually have a lot of Scriptures
  • 31:42 - 31:44
    that I could give you.
  • 31:44 - 31:46
    I'll just give a few.
  • 31:46 - 31:47
I want to just look at three areas
  • 31:47 - 31:49
    and just mention some Scriptures
  • 31:49 - 31:52
    so you'll know that I'm
    not just saying these things.
  • 31:52 - 31:54
First of all, in the area of creation,
  • 31:54 - 31:55
    why did God create?
  • 31:55 - 31:56
Well, let me give you some verses.
  • 31:56 - 31:59
    Colossians 1:16-17.
  • 31:59 - 32:03
"All things have been created by Him
  • 32:03 - 32:06
    and for Him."
  • 32:06 - 32:09
All things were created for Him.
  • 32:09 - 32:11
Now what does it mean, "for Him"?
  • 32:11 - 32:14
In order to meet some need that He has?
  • 32:14 - 32:16
No, He doesn't have any needs.
  • 32:16 - 32:19
Everything that is created is created
  • 32:19 - 32:21
    for His good pleasure;
  • 32:21 - 32:22
    in order to glorify Him,
  • 32:22 - 32:25
    to bring glory to Him.
  • 32:25 - 32:28
    Romans 11:36,
  • 32:28 - 32:31
"From Him, through Him, and to Him
  • 32:31 - 32:33
    are all things."
  • 32:33 - 32:36
So all things not only came from Him
  • 32:36 - 32:39
and through Him, but they go back to Him.
  • 32:39 - 32:41
They're for His glory, for His pleasure.
  • 32:41 - 32:43
    They exist for Him.
  • 32:43 - 32:46
Paul ends that in Romans 11,
  • 32:46 - 32:50
"To Him be the glory forever and ever."
  • 32:50 - 32:52
    Psalm 19:1,
  • 32:52 - 32:56
    "The heavens are telling
    the glory of God."
  • 32:56 - 32:58
    (incomplete thought)
  • 32:58 - 33:00
    They're manifesting His excellencies.
  • 33:00 - 33:01
    Isn't that true?
  • 33:01 - 33:02
They do that all the time.
  • 33:02 - 33:05
    They're doing what they
    were created to do.
  • 33:05 - 33:07
    Daily, they do what they
    were created to do.
  • 33:07 - 33:08
    Isaiah 6:3,
  • 33:08 - 33:12
    "Holy, holy, holy is the
    Lord God of Hosts,
  • 33:12 - 33:15
the whole earth is full of His glory."
  • 33:15 - 33:17
He created it to be full of His glory.
  • 33:17 - 33:21
    He created the universe.
  • 33:21 - 33:23
Why would God create a universe
  • 33:23 - 33:27
that has a 15 billion light year radius?
  • 33:27 - 33:29
Why would He create such a big -
  • 33:29 - 33:31
I mean, He could have had it half that big
  • 33:31 - 33:33
or a third that big or a tenth,
  • 33:33 - 33:37
    or a millionth that big.
  • 33:37 - 33:40
It would have still been big.
  • 33:40 - 33:42
But He wanted us to get some idea
  • 33:42 - 33:43
    that He's an infinite God.
  • 33:43 - 33:46
You know, get a little bit of a glimpse
  • 33:46 - 33:46
    of how big He is
  • 33:46 - 33:51
    and I'm sure we haven't
got to the end of it.
  • 33:51 - 33:53
The whole earth is full of His glory.
  • 33:53 - 33:58
    That is, even the snowflakes
  • 33:58 - 34:00
    and the spring flowers
    and all those things.
  • 34:00 - 34:03
    They're manifesting His excellencies.
  • 34:03 - 34:05
Secondly in the area of salvation.
  • 34:05 - 34:07
Why does God graciously save people?
  • 34:07 - 34:11
Well, just a few verses on this.
  • 34:11 - 34:13
Not first of all for their own sake,
  • 34:13 - 34:14
    but for His own glory.
  • 34:14 - 34:17
    Isaiah 43:6-7,
  • 34:17 - 34:19
    "Bring My sons from afar
  • 34:19 - 34:21
    and My daughters from
    the ends of the earth,
  • 34:21 - 34:23
everyone who is called by My name
  • 34:23 - 34:27
and whom I have created for My glory."
  • 34:27 - 34:30
    That's what happens when
    a person becomes a Christian.
  • 34:30 - 34:35
    God creates someone as a
    Christian for His glory.
  • 34:35 - 34:38
    Isaiah 44:23,
  • 34:38 - 34:39
    "Shout for joy, O heavens,
  • 34:39 - 34:41
for the Lord has done it.
  • 34:41 - 34:43
    Shout joyfully, you lower
    parts of the earth,
  • 34:43 - 34:46
    break forth into a shout
    of joy, you mountains,
  • 34:46 - 34:47
O forests and every tree in them,
  • 34:47 - 34:49
for the Lord has redeemed Jacob
  • 34:49 - 34:54
and in Israel He shows forth His glory."
  • 34:54 - 34:57
    He shows forth His glory.
  • 34:57 - 35:00
    Isaiah 61:3.
  • 35:00 - 35:04
    He talks about the fact
    that we'll be called
  • 35:04 - 35:06
    oaks of righteousness,
  • 35:06 - 35:08
    the planting of the Lord
  • 35:08 - 35:11
    that He may be glorified.
  • 35:11 - 35:15
    In Ephesians 1 going
    right down through there,
  • 35:15 - 35:19
"to the praise of the glory of His grace."
  • 35:19 - 35:22
    Over and over.
  • 35:22 - 35:24
Romans 9:23, "...In order that He might
  • 35:24 - 35:27
make known the riches of His glory
  • 35:27 - 35:28
    upon vessels of mercy
  • 35:28 - 35:33
which He prepared beforehand for glory."
  • 35:33 - 35:34
    Wonderful things!
  • 35:34 - 35:37
    Why does God not cast
    us off and destroy us
  • 35:37 - 35:39
    once we are converted?
  • 35:39 - 35:42
    Well, for His own glory.
  • 35:42 - 35:43
Let me just read you one here
  • 35:43 - 35:48
    out of Ezekiel 20.
  • 35:48 - 35:52
    Ezekiel 20:13-14. He says,
  • 35:52 - 35:54
"The house of Israel rebelled against Me
  • 35:54 - 35:56
    in the wilderness.
  • 35:56 - 35:57
They did not walk in My statutes,
  • 35:57 - 35:59
    and they rejected My ordinances
  • 35:59 - 36:02
    by which if man observes
    them, he will live.
  • 36:02 - 36:04
And My sabbaths they greatly profaned
  • 36:04 - 36:06
and then I resolved to pour out My wrath
  • 36:06 - 36:10
    on them in the
    wilderness to annihilate them.
  • 36:10 - 36:15
But I acted for the sake of My name
  • 36:15 - 36:16
that it should not be profaned
  • 36:16 - 36:19
in the sight of the nations
    before whose sight
  • 36:19 - 36:20
    I have brought them out."
  • 36:20 - 36:22
Now if He did that for Israel
  • 36:22 - 36:24
in the Old Testament, how much more
  • 36:24 - 36:26
will He do that for us?
  • 36:26 - 36:30
He says My name's tied up in you.
  • 36:30 - 36:33
I mean, that's why I've put up with you
  • 36:33 - 36:37
    as long as I have.
  • 36:37 - 36:41
My name, My glory is tied up in you.
  • 36:41 - 36:42
    Remember Ezekiel 36 -
  • 36:42 - 36:44
"Not for your sake, O Israel,
  • 36:44 - 36:46
    not for your sake.
  • 36:46 - 36:50
    For My own name's sake..."
  • 36:50 - 36:54
    Listen to what the
    Psalmist prays in Psalm 79:9.
  • 36:54 - 36:57
"Help us, O God of our salvation!"
  • 36:57 - 36:59
    Well, why should I?
  • 36:59 - 37:04
"For the glory of Thy name...
  • 37:04 - 37:08
and deliver us and forgive our sins
  • 37:08 - 37:11
    for Thy name's sake."
  • 37:11 - 37:12
    Isn't that amazing?
  • 37:12 - 37:15
We can even pray that way as Christians.
  • 37:15 - 37:16
    Even when you've got sins
  • 37:16 - 37:18
that have got to be taken care of
  • 37:18 - 37:21
and you've got to be delivered.
  • 37:21 - 37:23
    And when you need help.
  • 37:23 - 37:25
Help us, for the glory of Thy name.
  • 37:25 - 37:27
Do you realize God gets glory
  • 37:27 - 37:30
by helping miserable people like us?
  • 37:30 - 37:34
    I mean, it's amazing!
  • 37:34 - 37:36
Thirdly in the area of judgment.
  • 37:36 - 37:39
    Why does God bring judgment
    upon the wicked?
  • 37:39 - 37:40
    For His own glory.
  • 37:40 - 37:43
    Ezekiel 28:22,
  • 37:43 - 37:45
    "Thus says the Lord God,
  • 37:45 - 37:48
behold, I am against you, O Sidon,
  • 37:48 - 37:52
and I shall be glorified in your midst.
  • 37:52 - 37:54
Then they will know that I am the Lord
  • 37:54 - 37:56
when I execute judgments in her
  • 37:56 - 38:01
and I shall manifest My holiness in her."
  • 38:01 - 38:03
It's a terrible thing when God
  • 38:03 - 38:08
has to glorify Himself in that way
  • 38:08 - 38:10
    by pouring out judgment
  • 38:10 - 38:13
    and manifesting His holiness.
  • 38:13 - 38:15
    One more, Romans 9:17,
  • 38:15 - 38:17
    the Scripture says to Pharaoh,
  • 38:17 - 38:20
for this very purpose, I raised you up,
  • 38:20 - 38:23
that I might show My power in you
  • 38:23 - 38:25
and that My name might be declared
  • 38:25 - 38:26
    throughout all the earth.
  • 38:26 - 38:28
Here's this man and his pomp.
  • 38:28 - 38:30
And God says I just raised you up
  • 38:30 - 38:33
so that I could be glorified
  • 38:33 - 38:36
    by putting you down.
  • 38:36 - 38:37
I mean, it takes a lot of the wind
  • 38:37 - 38:43
    out of the sails of
    earthly rulers, doesn't it.
  • 38:43 - 38:46
I mean, Pharaoh thought he was God.
  • 38:46 - 38:50
He was the most powerful man in the world.
  • 38:50 - 38:54
God says I'm the one that raised you up.
  • 38:54 - 38:57
    "What if God although
    willing to demonstrate
  • 38:57 - 38:59
(this is verse 22 of Romans 9),
  • 38:59 - 39:01
    willing to demonstrate His wrath
  • 39:01 - 39:04
    and make His power known."
  • 39:04 - 39:06
    You see, manifesting. Manifesting.
  • 39:06 - 39:09
    The manifestation of His excellencies.
  • 39:09 - 39:12
His wrath - that's one of
    His excellencies? Yes it is.
  • 39:12 - 39:14
    A God without wrath
  • 39:14 - 39:17
    would be a wicked God.
  • 39:17 - 39:19
    Anyone who can see,
  • 39:19 - 39:20
    even to see the atrocities
  • 39:20 - 39:22
that we've seen in our lives.
  • 39:22 - 39:26
I stood there at the ovens in Dachau.
  • 39:26 - 39:29
I've been there a couple times.
  • 39:29 - 39:32
I don't know how many people died there,
  • 39:32 - 39:34
    but at Auschwitz they said
  • 39:34 - 39:38
    16,000 pounds of women's hair.
  • 39:38 - 39:40
Suppose a god could look at that
  • 39:40 - 39:43
and just say it doesn't matter.
  • 39:43 - 39:45
You see, the wrath of God -
  • 39:45 - 39:49
that's one of His glorious excellencies.
  • 39:49 - 39:51
    He hates wickedness.
  • 39:51 - 39:55
He is so pure and holy and good
  • 39:55 - 39:57
that He despises and loathes -
  • 39:57 - 40:01
    His wrath burns against wickedness.
  • 40:01 - 40:04
So he says God is willing
    to show His wrath
  • 40:04 - 40:06
    and make His power known.
  • 40:06 - 40:09
    He endures with much long-suffering
  • 40:09 - 40:11
    the vessels of wrath
    fitted to destruction.
  • 40:11 - 40:13
Why? That He might make known
  • 40:13 - 40:18
    the riches of His glory
    on vessels of mercy
  • 40:18 - 40:23
which He afore prepared unto glory.
  • 40:23 - 40:27
    I better quit. I'm getting
    my words mixed up here.
  • 40:27 - 40:29
    And I'm ready to quit.
  • 40:29 - 40:33
    In closing, you understand
  • 40:33 - 40:36
that for a man to seek his own glory
  • 40:36 - 40:38
is a selfish and a low thing,
  • 40:38 - 40:41
but because God is infinitely worthy,
  • 40:41 - 40:44
for Him to act for His own glory
  • 40:44 - 40:46
is the only reasonable and right thing
  • 40:46 - 40:48
    for Him to do.
  • 40:48 - 40:50
And we shouldn't think of this
  • 40:50 - 40:52
    in some sort of contrived
  • 40:52 - 40:53
    and unnatural way,
  • 40:53 - 40:55
like God's got to think through
  • 40:55 - 40:56
what am I going to do now?
  • 40:56 - 40:58
    I want to do something
    for My own glory.
  • 40:58 - 41:00
That's not the way it is.
  • 41:00 - 41:02
God acting for His own glory
  • 41:02 - 41:05
    is just God being Himself.
  • 41:05 - 41:08
It's just God doing what comes naturally.
  • 41:08 - 41:10
What could bring more glory to God
  • 41:10 - 41:13
than for God to just be who He is?
  • 41:13 - 41:16
And so this is not some
    kind of contrived thing?
  • 41:16 - 41:20
And that's why you can say,
  • 41:20 - 41:22
why does God save His people?
  • 41:22 - 41:25
He saves them for His own glory.
  • 41:25 - 41:26
You can also say He saves them
  • 41:26 - 41:30
    because of the great love
    with which He loved them.
  • 41:30 - 41:32
They're not in contradiction at all.
  • 41:32 - 41:33
It's just God being who He is.
  • 41:33 - 41:37
He really does love His people.
  • 41:37 - 41:39
It's not some cold mechanical thing:
  • 41:39 - 41:41
    "I think I'll save them.
  • 41:41 - 41:43
    I don't really want to,
  • 41:43 - 41:44
    but because of My glory,
  • 41:44 - 41:46
    it would bring more glory..."
    That isn't it.
  • 41:46 - 41:50
    Because of His great
love with which He loved us
  • 41:50 - 41:53
    even when we were dead
    in our trespasses and sins,
  • 41:53 - 41:55
    He raised us up.
  • 41:55 - 41:57
And you can say just as well
  • 41:57 - 42:00
    He saved them according
    to His great wisdom.
  • 42:00 - 42:02
    You see, every one
    of those things is true.
  • 42:02 - 42:04
    God is one.
  • 42:04 - 42:07
    And there's perfect
    harmony within Himself.
  • 42:07 - 42:11
    So the most glorious
    display of God's glory
  • 42:11 - 42:13
    is just God being Himself.
  • 42:13 - 42:17
But we've got to be clear on this.
  • 42:17 - 42:22
The universe does not revolve around man.
  • 42:22 - 42:24
I mean, if anything ought to be clear
  • 42:24 - 42:27
from just what we've looked at so far
  • 42:27 - 42:30
    is that this little rebellious
  • 42:30 - 42:33
    defiled speck of dust,
  • 42:33 - 42:36
finer than the dust in the balances
  • 42:36 - 42:41
    that's called man is not
    the center of reality.
  • 42:41 - 42:44
    And that, as I said,
the fact that God is God
  • 42:44 - 42:47
or that God is infinitely worthy
  • 42:47 - 42:50
    permeates all of reality.
  • 42:50 - 42:53
    And Lord willing, that's what
we're going to be looking at
  • 42:53 - 42:56
    in the next session.
