    When Mind Storm Comes,
    Welcome and Transcend
  • 0:12 - 0:15
    12 October 2021
    (with subtitles)
  • 0:16 - 0:21
Just a few days ago someone came
and asked me about the mind again.
  • 0:21 - 0:25
    'Still, the mind keeps coming
    and my attention just goes.
  • 0:25 - 0:28
And I don't know what to do ...'
  • 0:28 - 0:31
    So, my advice is this:
  • 0:31 - 0:36
in the midst of a mind storm,
or a mind attack, you may say ...
  • 0:36 - 0:38
    And we all know it,
  • 0:38 - 0:42
we all know what it feels like.
  • 0:42 - 0:45
The sense of, 'Oh, I want to stop my mind.
  • 0:45 - 0:49
Please can you show me how to stop this mind?'
  • 0:49 - 0:51
    What to do?
  • 0:51 - 0:55
I said, OK, don't try to stop the mind.
  • 0:55 - 1:01
    Next time it comes,
a brain storm or a mind storm comes,
  • 1:01 - 1:10
be very clear as to discern,
    isolate and recognise,
  • 1:10 - 1:12
what is the storm, the movement?
  • 1:12 - 1:15
The mind is like [makes sounds of roaring storm].
  • 1:15 - 1:18
Notice the energetic quality about it.
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    Recognise that.
  • 1:20 - 1:23
But, also, see it as being different
  • 1:23 - 1:28
from the space in which it appears,
    which I call consciousness.
  • 1:28 - 1:35
You may also call it the formless witness.
  • 1:35 - 1:37
But the witness is not an entity.
  • 1:37 - 1:40
    It's more just a witnessing.
  • 1:40 - 1:43
    So, that's the first thing,
  • 1:43 - 1:47
    to recognise and discern
  • 1:47 - 1:53
    the difference between the noise
and the space in which it comes.
  • 1:53 - 1:56
    Because the noise will come.
It will play and it will go.
  • 1:56 - 1:58
But the space will not move.
  • 1:58 - 2:02
That space is the space of awareness.
  • 2:02 - 2:05
    That's very, very, very important!
  • 2:05 - 2:09
    Now, you may say,
'But still, it's still so strong!'
  • 2:09 - 2:11
    Next point:
  • 2:11 - 2:18
the one who is suffering the mind storm,
    and the storm,
  • 2:18 - 2:23
    they are connected;
it's like two sides of one coin.
  • 2:23 - 2:25
    This is very important!
  • 2:25 - 2:27
The one who is suffering it,
  • 2:27 - 2:31
the mistake has been in thinking,
    'It's me. Please help me!'
  • 2:31 - 2:35
But this 'me' and the mind storm
    have a relationship.
  • 2:35 - 2:37
    They are connected.
  • 2:37 - 2:40
    Without the 'me',
who is reporting about the storm,
  • 2:40 - 2:44
there is no storm to worry about.
  • 2:44 - 2:47
Nobody will know if there is a strong wind
  • 2:47 - 2:51
if there is nothing for it to push against.
  • 2:51 - 2:55
    The wind is blowing.
  • 2:55 - 2:57
How do you know? You can't see the wind,
  • 2:57 - 3:02
but you can see the effect of the wind
    because trees are bending.
  • 3:02 - 3:04
This bending one is the person.
  • 3:04 - 3:08
    So, include the person
who is suffering from the mind storm
  • 3:08 - 3:10
    as part of the storm.
  • 3:10 - 3:15
And the witnessing of this is quite impartial.
  • 3:15 - 3:18
It's like the space, the intelligent space,
  • 3:18 - 3:20
which was there before the storm,
  • 3:20 - 3:22
it is there during the storm,
  • 3:22 - 3:26
and it is there after the storm has gone.
  • 3:26 - 3:31
This space, I'm calling it your Self.
  • 3:31 - 3:34
    I'm calling it your Self.
  • 3:34 - 3:36
    This is you!
  • 3:36 - 3:40
And I'm going to show you why I say it is you.
  • 3:40 - 3:45
Before the storm came, were you there or not?
    Yes, you are here.
  • 3:45 - 3:47
When the storm comes, you feel,
  • 3:47 - 3:53
'Oh, I don't know what I'm going to do! ...'
  • 3:53 - 3:56
You also know that you're watching this.
  • 3:56 - 3:59
When the storm [storm sounds peak and pass],
    it is gone.
  • 3:59 - 4:01
    Where is the person?
  • 4:01 - 4:06
It's also gone, the one suffering it.
    Do you see?
  • 4:06 - 4:10
Now, if you were any of that,
  • 4:10 - 4:13
then when the storm has gone,
    you would also be gone.
  • 4:13 - 4:17
But look, you are here to say, 'It is gone'.
  • 4:17 - 4:21
Even to say, 'Ahhh, it is gone',
  • 4:21 - 4:26
don't identify with anyone who says,
    'Ahhh, this is gone',
  • 4:26 - 4:29
as though that's the one who it happened to.
  • 4:29 - 4:32
No, the storm and one suffering it are gone.
  • 4:32 - 4:35
What remains is the pure space of awareness.
  • 4:35 - 4:37
    Be very clear about this
  • 4:37 - 4:41
    because, sometimes,
    there is some residual identity,
  • 4:41 - 4:45
    that stays back to say,
    'Ah, it's gone. Thank you.'
  • 4:45 - 4:47
And that's how he gives himself away.
  • 4:47 - 4:51
He is the one who says,
'Oh, I'm so happy that it is gone'.
  • 4:51 - 4:53
    So if he stays,
  • 4:53 - 4:57
he is already making a date with another storm.
  • 4:57 - 5:00
    Just take this attitude,
you are only the witness of them.
  • 5:00 - 5:03
    They come and they go.
  • 5:03 - 5:05
And watch what is going to happen now!
  • 5:05 - 5:08
Or rather, watch what is not going to happen.
  • 5:08 - 5:10
Because it will come, sometimes ...
  • 5:10 - 5:14
The storm doesn't announce, 'I'm coming!
  • 5:14 - 5:17
I'm coming! Put on your anti-storm clothes.'
  • 5:17 - 5:19
It's not going to say that.
  • 5:19 - 5:22
It just comes, and suddenly like a reflex,
  • 5:22 - 5:26
    you find identity comes immediately
when the storm comes! Or soon after.
  • 5:26 - 5:31
    Sometimes something feels [shaken].
As soon as something names it,
  • 5:31 - 5:33
'This is not good, this is a storm',
  • 5:33 - 5:36
the identity is born, [mimes tussle], like this.
  • 5:36 - 5:39
And you forget that you are watching,
  • 5:39 - 5:42
    because you take the role
of the one who suffers it.
  • 5:42 - 5:47
    Please ponder on this,
over and over and over again.
  • 5:47 - 5:51
Look forward to your next mind attack,
  • 5:51 - 5:53
bearing in mind what is being shared now.
  • 5:53 - 5:56
Look forward to your next mind attack!
  • 5:56 - 5:59
Say, 'Mind, please come. I'm waiting for you.'
  • 5:59 - 6:01
And see when it will come.
  • 6:01 - 6:03
    It will not come.
  • 6:03 - 6:07
It will come like an ambush,
    when you are not ready.
  • 6:07 - 6:11
    But remember also,
the Self is neither ready nor not ready.
  • 6:11 - 6:13
    It is just ever-present.
  • 6:13 - 6:22
    This is the goal of
    authentic spiritual realisation, Self-realisation.
  • 6:22 - 6:25
    OK. Thank you!
