Few & A few: What's the difference - English In A Minute

  • 0:00 - 0:01
    Welcome everyone.
  • 0:01 - 0:04
Today we're going to look at
    the difference between
  • 0:04 - 0:06
    'few' and 'a few'.
  • 0:06 - 0:08
    Have a look at these
    two sentences.
  • 0:08 - 0:11
    Which sentence has
    a more negative feeling?
  • 0:11 - 0:14
    Number 1.
    I have few friends.
  • 0:14 - 0:18
    Number 2. I have a few friends
    who live in London.
  • 0:18 - 0:21
It was sentence number one, right?
  • 0:21 - 0:24
When we use 'few', we're saying
    that the total number
  • 0:24 - 0:26
of something is not as many
    as we would like
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    - that the number is small.
  • 0:28 - 0:32
    Here, I'm telling you that
    I don't have many friends.
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    When we use 'a few',
  • 0:34 - 0:36
    we're not talking about
    the total number,
  • 0:36 - 0:38
    but a category of something.
  • 0:38 - 0:41
    It has a similar meaning
    to 'some'.
  • 0:41 - 0:45
    Here, I'm telling you that
some of my friends live in London.
  • 0:45 - 0:46
    Just
    remember,
  • 0:46 - 0:49
    we always use this with
    countable nouns only,
  • 0:49 - 0:51
    so please
    be careful.
  • 0:51 - 0:52
    See you next time!
