Sacred Headwaters Drill Take Over

  • 0:11 - 0:14
[ soft melodic music begins... ]
  • 0:23 - 0:26
[ sound of running stream... ]
  • 0:26 - 0:29
    [ singing... ]
  • 0:51 - 0:53
...you believe they unlocked their drill,
  • 0:53 - 0:56
and they don't even have that, uh, spill tray...
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    [ laughter ]
  • 1:05 - 1:09
i'm sick and tired of the Provincial government,
  • 1:09 - 1:12
    _______ country.
  • 1:12 - 1:17
Sick and tired of the Mining Act, it rules the world.
  • 1:36 - 1:38
    Shut 'er down, boys!
  • 1:38 - 1:41
    Call your helicopter, ...
  • 1:59 - 2:03
[ a little laughter and indistinguishable talking ]
  • 2:10 - 2:16
[ RCMP officer ] What i'm wondering is, was your plan to disrupt the drill crew from their work?
  • 2:16 - 2:19
[ Klabona Keeper ] No! The drill crew is disrupting us from our life.
  • 2:19 - 2:21
We're just out here being ourselves,
  • 2:21 - 2:24
like we've done for 10,000 years.
  • 2:24 - 2:28
And they're chasing all the game away with their choppers,
  • 2:28 - 2:31
I mean, like, this is not our life,
  • 2:31 - 2:35
to be out here having a confrontation with people from Ontario,
  • 2:35 - 2:39
never mind having the RCMP guarding and watching everything that you do out here.
  • 2:39 - 2:40
    This is not our life.
  • 2:40 - 2:43
Our life is peaceful out here.
  • 2:43 - 2:47
Our life is to come out here and enjoy,
and eat our food and go home.
  • 2:47 - 2:50
    There's some of the people
have been here for one month.
  • 2:50 - 2:53
[ RCMP officer ] Yes, we've been here for a month.
  • 2:53 - 2:55
i know most of these people...
  • 2:55 - 2:59
[ Klabona Keeper ] ... our camps used to... street right over there...
  • 2:59 - 3:00
used to be able to come out into this open,
  • 3:00 - 3:03
sometimes we'd be lucky... see something...
  • 3:03 - 3:06
come out now and there's a drill.
  • 3:06 - 3:09
    right where we hunted,
  • 3:10 - 3:12
    We're not doing anything wrong.
  • 3:12 - 3:13
    They're doing something wrong.
  • 3:13 - 3:15
    They're wrong.
  • 3:15 - 3:16
    We're not wrong.
  • 3:16 - 3:19
[ RCMP officer ] i know, well the discussion that i had with the people before,
  • 3:19 - 3:21
and we're not, we're not here...
  • 3:21 - 3:23
i mean you can say what you want...
  • 3:23 - 3:26
but we're not here to guard Fortune Minerals.
  • 3:26 - 3:28
We're not here to guard the Beauty Camp.
  • 3:28 - 3:33
We're here to make sure that everybody has a right to do what they legally are entitled to do, right?
  • 3:33 - 3:35
Now, you guys have a right to be here,
  • 3:35 - 3:37
you guys have a right to protest here.
  • 3:37 - 3:41
i'm not trying to tell you what you can or can't do.
  • 3:41 - 3:47
However, um, Fortune Minerals, as you know, has a permit that was issued by the BC Government, right?
  • 3:47 - 3:51
To do their environmental assessment work that they're doing.
  • 3:51 - 3:56
So for you guys to protest that work is fine,
  • 3:56 - 4:04
if it stops them from doing the work that they're doing, then it's not longer a peaceful protest, right?
  • 4:07 - 4:10
[ Klabona Keeper ] So who gave them the right to be here?
  • 4:10 - 4:12
[ RCMP officer ] The Province of British Columbia.
  • 4:12 - 4:14
[ Klabona Keeper ] The Province of British Columbia has this territory occupied,
  • 4:14 - 4:17
it's no different than the Gaza Strip.
  • 4:17 - 4:19
    In Israel.
  • 4:19 - 4:21
This land has never been treatied,
  • 4:21 - 4:26
only 8% of this land down in the Lower Mainland has been treatied by the Douglas Treaties.
  • 4:26 - 4:27
    Otherwise, it's all occupied.
  • 4:27 - 4:30
    You're walking on occupied territory.
  • 4:30 - 4:31
    So who has the right?
  • 4:31 - 4:32
    We have the right.
  • 4:32 - 4:35
Our land has never been treatied.
  • 4:35 - 4:37
    It's been occupied.
  • 4:37 - 4:39
    And it's still occupied.
  • 4:39 - 4:41
[ RCMP officer ] im not questioning your guys' right to be here...
  • 4:41 - 4:44
[ Klabona Keeper ] Well if you're talking about rights, we're talking about all rights.
  • 4:44 - 4:47
We can't be specific and only talk about rights that suit your rights.
  • 4:47 - 4:49
[ RCMP officer ] They're not my rights.
  • 4:49 - 4:51
[ Klabona Keeper ] They are your rights, you're Canadian.
  • 4:51 - 4:52
    They're not my rights.
  • 4:52 - 4:55
i'm a colonial subject of your government.
  • 4:55 - 4:56
    [ RCMP officer ] OK.
  • 4:56 - 4:59
[ Klabona Keeper ] We have no rights according to your colonial laws,
  • 4:59 - 5:00
    but our rights...
  • 5:00 - 5:07
the problem is the government got too lazy to treaty this land and to do treaties on this land...
  • 5:07 - 5:10
so therefore, it gives us the rights.
  • 5:10 - 5:13
    We've been here 10,000 years.
  • 5:13 - 5:18
[ another of the Klabona Keepers ] If i was to go and disrupt a resident hunter while he's hunting,
  • 5:18 - 5:21
    i could get charged.
  • 5:21 - 5:25
These guys are disrupting our hunting,
  • 5:25 - 5:27
    nothing happens.
  • 5:32 - 5:36
You know, when they're out here
    disturbing our lifestyle
  • 5:36 - 5:40
that we've maintained for 10,000 years
    on occupied territory,
  • 5:40 - 5:44
why aren't you standing here telling them they're wrong?
  • 5:44 - 5:46
    They're wrong, we're not wrong.
  • 5:46 - 5:47
The bottom line is they're wrong,
  • 5:47 - 5:49
and i could argue with all of you.
  • 5:49 - 5:52
[ RCMP officer ] i know, but we wouldn't, we wouldn't solve anything by you and i arguing...
  • 5:52 - 5:56
[ Klabona Keeper ] You are not solving anything by coming in confronting us for exercising our rights,
  • 5:56 - 5:58
    and leaving them alone.
  • 5:58 - 5:59
[ RCMP officer ] i don't think that we are...
  • 5:59 - 6:01
[ Klabona Keeper ] ...so it doesn't take an idiot... you can tell a child...
  • 6:01 - 6:05
y'know, we're gonna allow those guys to disrupt you guys over there,
  • 6:05 - 6:07
and we're not gonna confront them.
  • 6:07 - 6:09
But if you go over there, we're gonna confront you.
  • 6:09 - 6:11
What do you think that child will think?
  • 6:11 - 6:13
    You think i'm a child?
  • 6:13 - 6:17
    i mean, it's common sense
that you're not here for us.
  • 6:17 - 6:21
    Y'know, don't kid me, i'm not stupid.
  • 6:21 - 6:25
    Tell me somethin that's real
and we'd have a good conversation.
  • 6:25 - 6:27
But if you want to tell me something like that,
  • 6:27 - 6:32
i can't rationalize in my head,
    and still have to accept?
  • 6:32 - 6:34
    Why? Because it's a lie.
  • 6:35 - 6:37
[ RCMP officer ] i didn't come here, i didn't come here to have an argument...
  • 6:37 - 6:39
[ Klabona Keeper ] then don't come here to tell me bullshit.
  • 6:39 - 6:40
[ RCMP officer ] i'm not telling you bullshit...
  • 6:40 - 6:41
[ Klabona Keeper ] You are.
  • 6:41 - 6:43
i mean, why aren't you harassing them
  • 6:43 - 6:45
when they're here drilling and disturbing us?
  • 6:45 - 6:50
But if we come out to resist --
    we're resisting, we're not protesting,
  • 6:50 - 6:53
    we're resisting the colonial situation.
  • 6:53 - 6:56
    And then we get confronted.
  • 6:56 - 7:01
While the colonizers from Ontario can sit on that drill and destroy our land,
  • 7:01 - 7:03
    and they get no confrontation.
  • 7:03 - 7:05
So when you come out and tell me that
  • 7:05 - 7:07
"oh this is just hunky dory, everything's fine",
  • 7:07 - 7:09
and i'm supposed to walk away and believe it?
  • 7:09 - 7:11
    Then you insult me.
  • 7:11 - 7:15
[ RCMP officer ] Well, we'll have a record... of what was said, i'm sure.
  • 7:15 - 7:20
[ Klabona Keeper ] ... is it going to get anywhere, the record of what's been said?
  • 7:20 - 7:21
    [ RCMP officer ] i don't know.
  • 7:21 - 7:23
[ Klabona Keeper ] Don't insult my intelligence.
  • 7:23 - 7:27
    [ RCMP officer ] You're... i'm not sayin' what you're hearin'.
  • 7:27 - 7:29
    [ Klabona Keeper ] i'm hearing what i'm hearing,
  • 7:29 - 7:34
while i'm laying on my land confronted by the RCMP because i'm laying on my land,
  • 7:34 - 7:37
with a drill rig right behind you.
  • 7:37 - 7:39
    You know?
  • 7:39 - 7:42
And you feed me this? Give me a break.
  • 7:42 - 7:46
[ RCMP officer ] i'm not feedin' you anything, i'm just askin' you what's goin' on.
  • 7:46 - 7:48
[ Klabona Keeper ] i told you what's goin' on.
  • 7:48 - 7:52
We just don't need all the flare... that's supposed to distract...
  • 7:56 - 8:05
    [ RCMP officer ] OK...
  • 8:05 - 8:07
well maybe we'll join your picnic (did he really just say "picnic"??? )
  • 8:07 - 8:08
[ Klabona Keeper ] Join in.
