David Altmejd: Heads | "Exclusive" | Art21

Episode #190: Filmed in 2011, David Altmejd discusses the head sculptures that he creates to accompany each new body of work. "Some sculptors make drawings, I make heads," says Altmejd. By using the same materials found in his larger works, he distills his larger ideas into compact form. Works in the film are shown at the artist's studio in Queens, and in his solo exhibition at Andrea Rosen Gallery in Manhattan.

With an almost childlike fascination for objects that grow, transform, and reshape themselves, David Altmejd creates sculptures, suffused with ornament, that blur distinctions between interior and exterior, surface and structure, representation, and abstraction. Altmejd abandons standard narrative conventions in favor of an exploration of materials, processes, and structures. In diorama-like tableaux, Altmejd pairs objects laden with symbolism—crystals, gold chain, and taxidermy—with virtuosic applications of materials such as plaster, thread, and mirrors.

(إمراة من خلف الكميرا) فلنبدا

(رجل من خلف الكميرا) اذا 20 ثانيه من الصمت , من فضلكم

(راجل من خلف الكيميرا) هدوء

(التمجد) انا ارى الراس كانه رسمه

بعض النحّاتين ينحتون الرسومات

و انا اصنع الارؤس

هي مجرد وسيله لاستخدام هذا الإطار

لتجربة مزيج الالوان مع المواد

هذا هو السبب في انني اراهم مثل الرسوم

لقد كنت دائما اصنعهم

لقد كانت دائما في بالي

اعتقد انها حقا بالحجم المناسب

كما انني اظن انها مركز الكون

تعجبنى فكره ان الكون كان بحجم رأس

من قبل الانفجار الاعظم

عندما كنت اعمل في برنامج تلفازي,

كنت اصنع رؤوس من مواد مستعملة

في الاجزءه الرئسيه

لذا كل راس اصنعُه ينتمي الي البرنامج بطريقةٍ ما

ثم ااخذ الراس, و اضعهُ هنا في زاوية الغرفه

و من بعدها الي الزاويه الاخرى

بعد حين اكون قد كونت فكره علي ما ابحثُ عنه

احب افكار التي تكون من الداخل و الخارج و غير المحدوده

غير ممدودة الكبر و غير محدودة الصغر , العقل

هو كل شىء في الراس

لذا انا سوف اتبعده كإطار لعملي

اعتقد , للابد
