Ugandan Women Activists Share Knowledge about the LRA, Sex Slavery, Justice and more

  • 0:00 - 0:03
From the 13th to the 17th of November
  • 0:03 - 0:06
    thirteen Congolese organisations
  • 0:06 - 0:10
gathered through Women's initiatives for Gender Justice
  • 0:10 - 0:13
Eastern RDC, took part to the International
  • 0:13 - 0:16
Women March in Bukavu. They do expess through
  • 0:16 - 0:18
this video, their call for action, against gender violences
  • 0:18 - 0:21
Claudine Bela - CERDF Coordinator- Kisangani
  • 0:21 - 0:25
    Eastern province representative
  • 0:25 - 0:29
We're coming here, from North and South Kivu,
  • 0:29 - 0:34
North Katanga districts, in the Eastern province,
  • 0:34 - 0:40
in order to exchange with our worldwide colleagues,
  • 0:40 - 0:45
about problems faced by women around four main
  • 0:45 - 0:51
    themes: peace, demilitarization, common wealth
  • 0:51 - 0:54
    and violences.
  • 0:54 - 0:58
Each day, sexual violence cases are registred
  • 0:58 - 1:03
in the four main districts of the Eastern province:
  • 1:03 - 1:09
High Zuele, Low zuele, Itouri and Chopo. Women and
  • 1:09 - 1:14
young maids are daily victims of rapes.
  • 1:14 - 1:18
An atmosphear of insecurity spreads, due to
  • 1:18 - 1:23
LRA activists, Ougandan rebel armed groups,
  • 1:23 - 1:28
which has settled in Congolese Low and High Zuele.
  • 1:28 - 1:33
Those groups are responsible for many atrocities,
  • 1:33 - 1:38
and of a displacement of population at a large scale.
  • 1:38 - 1:43
People have been obliged to flee to others towns
  • 1:43 - 1:48
so that it has became highly difficult for us,
  • 1:48 - 1:54
to be able to take care of victims of sexual violences.
  • 1:54 - 2:02
They remain where they are, without any relief.
  • 2:02 - 2:08
It is what we're actually facing.
  • 2:08 - 2:11
Several others groups has settled in the
  • 2:11 - 2:15
Eastern province: The Maï Maï, Anitouri armed
  • 2:15 - 2:21
groups, and the ADF Nalou located in North Kivu.
  • 2:21 - 2:28
Each case of violence registred there, proves
  • 2:28 - 2:32
that insecurity is such, that it is impossible
  • 2:32 - 2:38
to moove safely and freely, through the province,
  • 2:38 - 2:43
without meeting those bandits. We have denouced
  • 2:43 - 2:47
those facts frequently, but no real solution
  • 2:47 - 2:51
    has been found.
  • 2:51 - 2:55
Our victims are suffering, those having fistulas
  • 2:55 - 2:59
can't be helped, due to the scarceness of means
  • 2:59 - 3:03
which doesn't allow us to take care of evryone.
  • 3:03 - 3:06
Most of the ONG working here, are closing,
  • 3:06 - 3:10
we don't know what will became of those victims.
  • 3:10 - 3:14
We have to face another kind of problem
  • 3:14 - 3:18
at a judiciary level. Trials are organised,
  • 3:18 - 3:22
judgements passed, and then nothing occures.
  • 3:22 - 3:26
Consequently, victims remain exposed to possible
  • 3:26 - 3:32
    exactions from their previous agressor.
  • 3:32 - 3:37
This is why we came here and are taking part
  • 3:37 - 3:41
    to the International Women March,
  • 3:41 - 3:45
aiming at witnessing of what occures
  • 3:45 - 3:48
    in the Congolese Eastern province.
  • 3:48 - 3:51
which is actually totaly forgotten in both
  • 3:51 - 3:55
    national and international speeches, while
  • 3:55 - 3:59
others provinces are taken into account.
  • 3:59 - 4:03
It is as if those denouncing LRA's activities
  • 4:03 - 4:05
should be silenced, and the northern province
  • 4:05 - 4:08
weren't peopled by Congolese. This, shocks
  • 4:08 - 4:11
and offends us. That's the reason why we came here
  • 4:11 - 4:14
in order to be heard by all those having the
  • 4:14 - 4:18
willingness to help the eastern province,
  • 4:18 - 4:21
and so that they'll be able to witness
  • 4:21 - 4:24
    of what happens here.
  • 4:24 - 4:27
    We want that justice should be done;
  • 4:27 - 4:30
All those having commited violences will have
  • 4:30 - 4:33
to be prosecuted, and have to respond charges
  • 4:33 - 4:36
    in front of competent juridiction,
  • 4:36 - 4:40
should it be nationonal or international.
  • 4:40 - 4:44
Emerite Tabisha Mongelwa - AFD Coordinator
  • 4:44 - 4:48
    Uvira-Fizi /South Kivu province representative
  • 4:48 - 4:51
We noticed that each time an international event
  • 4:51 - 4:55
takes place in the country, showing external
  • 4:55 - 4:59
implication, it has a great impact.
  • 4:59 - 5:03
An international presence in our province,
  • 5:03 - 5:06
will move our leaders and those ruled by them,
  • 5:06 - 5:09
and will be positive for the women cause, here.
  • 5:09 - 5:12
All the most, law exists, but isn't applied.
  • 5:12 - 5:17
Chantal Malumbi Faila - SOFEDI coordinator
  • 5:17 - 5:20
    Kalemie /Katanga province representative
  • 5:20 - 5:24
since last year, upon 194 cases being held to justice
  • 5:24 - 5:31
only 44 gave way to a jugement, but none victim
  • 5:31 - 5:38
has recovered damages, since liables can afford
  • 5:38 - 5:45
to corrupt those who should arrest them.
  • 5:45 - 5:52
They are wandering freely and aren't worried.
  • 5:52 - 5:58
That's why we're obliged to settle victims
  • 5:58 - 6:02
    especially those rejected,
  • 6:02 - 6:08
in families welcoming them. But those families are
  • 6:08 - 6:13
living in poverty and are hardly able to feed victims.
  • 6:13 - 6:19
The main problem is then from economical order, and
  • 6:19 - 6:27
have to be solved through victims'economical rehabilitation.
  • 6:27 - 6:34
by mean of a salary gotten, enabling them to
  • 6:34 - 6:41
get out of poverty, while we're helping them
  • 6:41 - 6:48
on their way back to recover joy and dignity.
  • 6:48 - 6:57
    It's very difficult actually.
  • 6:57 - 7:04
In order to fight impunity, we need to be backed,
  • 7:04 - 7:09
so that we could hire lawyers services, pay
  • 7:09 - 7:18
justice charges and reduce procedure delays.
  • 7:18 - 7:25
    Damages have to be recovered.
  • 7:25 - 7:31
  • 7:31 - 7:36
We are facing two kinds of problems:
  • 7:36 - 7:42
    The victim's economical support,
  • 7:42 - 7:48
and at judiciary level, the sentence of liables.
  • 7:48 - 7:53
  • 7:53 - 8:00
As far as I'm concerned, it is with great hopes that
  • 8:00 - 8:07
I do take part to the march. We are meeting there
  • 8:07 - 8:13
    many decision makers, sponsors, authorities
  • 8:13 - 8:19
at high level. We came in order to give voice to
  • 8:19 - 8:24
the women 's cause at an international level.
  • 8:24 - 8:30
This synergy will make it possible to solve problems
  • 8:30 - 8:34
We have to do it all together.
  • 8:34 - 8:40
We do hope that the march will have concrete
  • 8:40 - 8:46
positive results and will make women, sponsors
  • 8:46 - 8:51
as well as national authorities undergo the step
  • 8:51 - 8:56
from theory to action. All have to be implicated,
  • 8:56 - 9:02
in order that women's voice could be heard
  • 9:02 - 9:05
in order that justice should pevail and
  • 9:05 - 9:08
equality of chances should be real, and our action
  • 9:08 - 9:12
made visible through this march In Congo.
  • 9:12 - 9:16
Joséphine Mlimukono - LSC coordinator -
  • 9:16 - 9:20
Goma - North Kivu province representative
  • 9:20 - 9:23
We came here in Bukavu, aiming at exchanging
  • 9:23 - 9:27
and gain knowledge, about all actions undertaken
  • 9:27 - 9:31
    worlwide, against violence.
  • 9:31 - 9:37
We haven't yet organised for our own part,
  • 9:37 - 9:41
any specific action, but our participation to the march
  • 9:41 - 9:47
will increase our knowledge, help us share
  • 9:47 - 9:51
    others'worlwide experiences and actions
  • 9:51 - 9:55
and will enable us to make their strategies
  • 9:55 - 10:02
our own in order to fight poverty, here.
  • 10:02 - 10:07
in order that women take themselves in hand, and
  • 10:07 - 10:12
so that we could find efficient lasting strategies,
  • 10:12 - 10:15
to put an end to gender violences.
  • 10:15 - 10:18
The organisations making part of Women's Initiatives
  • 10:18 - 10:20
    are asking :
  • 10:20 - 10:22
the instant cessation of gender violences
  • 10:22 - 10:25
that liables of violences should be judged
  • 10:25 - 10:28
That women make part of the decision-making proceedings
  • 10:28 -
This video has been made by Women's Initiatives organisations trained by witness, using video in human rights defence.
