Mark Stewart's "To Whom It May Concern, Thank You" | ETHEL | TEDxManhattan

  • 0:16 - 0:19
Since we're on the subject of food today,
  • 0:19 - 0:22
    we thought it would be
    appropriate to bring you
  • 0:22 - 0:25
a piece that's all about saying grace.
  • 0:26 - 0:28
This is by our dear friend Mark Stewart.
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    He is a member
of the Bang on a Can community,
  • 0:30 - 0:33
and he's Paul Simon's music director.
  • 0:33 - 0:38
Mark's father is an episcopal priest,
and his mother is an atheist.
  • 0:38 - 0:43
So you can imagine, at family dinner time,
    they've got fun discussions of,
  • 0:43 - 0:45
"What exactly do we do with grace?"
  • 0:45 - 0:51
So, mom came up with a brilliant idea,
after which Mark named this piece.
  • 0:51 - 0:55
    So, one year,
Thanksgiving time I guess it was,
  • 0:56 - 1:00
mom stood up, time to say grace,
    and she said,
  • 1:00 - 1:02
"To whom it may concern --
  • 1:02 - 1:03
    (Laughter)
  • 1:03 - 1:05
    -- thank you."
  • 1:05 - 1:06
    (Laughter)
  • 1:11 - 1:16
    (Music)
  • 4:37 - 4:39
    (Applause)
