    Welcome. I came here today to warn you

    about the dangers of ice-cream.

    You may not be aware of this,
  • 0:17 - 0:20
    but these innocent looking cones full of sweetness
  • 0:20 - 0:23
    are one of the major causes of drownings.
  • 0:23 - 0:25
    And I've got the numbers to prove it.
  • 0:25 - 0:28
    So, if you plot a graph of the number of ice-creams that are sold,
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    and you compare it with the number of drownings,
  • 0:30 - 0:33
    you can see there is clearly an upwards trend,
  • 0:33 - 0:37
    and I think it's very safe to conclude from this
  • 0:37 - 0:40
    that we should ban ice-cream because it's very dangerous.
  • 0:40 - 0:45

    Since you're all smart people,
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    you've probably figured out
  • 0:48 - 0:49
    there's something wrong with my example.
  • 0:49 - 0:52
    What's really happening here is, of course,
  • 0:52 - 0:54
    that there is an underlying factor,
  • 0:54 - 0:56
    which is nice weather, you might have guessed it.
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    And if the weather is nice,
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    more people will go out swimming,
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    and unfortunately drown, and at the same time,
  • 1:02 - 1:04
    more people will buy ice-cream.
  • 1:04 - 1:07
    And it's not the ice-cream that's causing the drownings.
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    And here it's really easy to see that
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    there is something wrong,
  • 1:11 - 1:14
    but jumping to an incorrect conclusion about causality
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    when you see a correlation
  • 1:16 - 1:19
    is the most often made logical mistake.
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    And today my goal is to make sure that
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    in the future you can recognize this mistake.
  • 1:23 - 1:26
    And I really hope you can avoid making it
  • 1:26 - 1:28
    in the future for yourselves.
  • 1:28 - 1:31
    And I'll do this by just giving some famous examples.
  • 1:31 - 1:33
    And the first one is really rather innocent.
  • 1:33 - 1:35
    The fact is that
  • 1:35 - 1:38
    married men live longer than single men.
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    If you look at the statistics, you see that
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    this is really happening.
  • 1:42 - 1:45
    And women's magazines, they like to conclude from this
  • 1:45 - 1:48
    that marriage is very healthy for men,
  • 1:48 - 1:50
    because it makes them live longer.
  • 1:50 - 1:53
    Well, a friend of mine, he likes to joke that
  • 1:53 - 1:56
    marriage mainly makes life seem longer,
  • 1:56 - 1:58
    but -- (Laughter) --
  • 1:58 - 2:00
    that's because his wife is --
  • 2:00 - 2:03
    (Cheers) (Applause)
  • 2:03 - 2:07
    But so, can anyone guess what's going on here?
  • 2:07 - 2:09
    Because there is a causal relation,
  • 2:09 - 2:11
    but it's the other way around.
  • 2:11 - 2:14
    The fact is that men who are healthy,
  • 2:14 - 2:16
    and rich, and well educated,
  • 2:16 - 2:18
    and have a much higher life expectancy,
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    these are the men that are much more likely
  • 2:20 - 2:22
    to find a wife -- that's the way women are --
  • 2:22 - 2:25
    and the guys who have a very low life expectancy,
  • 2:25 - 2:28
    so they're unhealthy and poor,
  • 2:28 - 2:30
    they are not as likely to get married.
  • 2:30 - 2:32
    So it's the high life expectancy
  • 2:32 - 2:33
    that is causing the marriage,
  • 2:33 - 2:35
    not the other way around.
  • 2:35 - 2:37
    Well, and this, of course, you know,
  • 2:37 - 2:39
    it's not so serious, no one will get married
  • 2:39 - 2:40
    just because he read this.
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    So let's move to a more serious example.
  • 2:43 - 2:46
    It was also more serious research.
  • 2:46 - 2:49
    In Nature there was a study in 1999 that showed
  • 2:49 - 2:52
    that young kids who sleep with the lights on,
  • 2:52 - 2:55
    that they have a much higher probability
  • 2:55 - 2:57
    of becoming short-sighted later in life.
  • 2:57 - 2:59
    But the researchers, they were smart,
  • 2:59 - 3:01
    and they wrote very careful
  • 3:01 - 3:03
    that they had found a correlation,
  • 3:03 - 3:06
    and they didn't know how the causal relation might work,
  • 3:06 - 3:09
    but just to be sure they advised all parents
  • 3:09 - 3:11
    to turn off the lights at night.
  • 3:11 - 3:14
    And in the popular media this became that
  • 3:14 - 3:17
    bed lamps were night abuse, children's abuse,
  • 3:17 - 3:18
    and that it was very bad
  • 3:18 - 3:20
    if parents used lamps in the bedroom.
  • 3:20 - 3:22
    And many parents were worried.
  • 3:22 - 3:24
    I can imagine, if this would have happened
  • 3:24 - 3:25
    when my son was sleeping with the lights on,
  • 3:25 - 3:27
    I would had felt really bad.
  • 3:27 - 3:31
    But luckily, the article had to be corrected
  • 3:31 - 3:34
    the next week, and maybe some of you can guess,
  • 3:34 - 3:37
    and if there are biologists in the audience, they know.
  • 3:37 - 3:40
    Short-sightedness is genetic.
  • 3:40 - 3:42
    And so, it's parents who are short-sighted.
  • 3:42 - 3:44
    And those are the parents who like to
  • 3:44 - 3:46
    leave the light on in the bedroom,
  • 3:46 - 3:47
    and they also are the parents
  • 3:47 - 3:49
    who have short-sighted kids.
  • 3:49 - 3:54
    So again, a simple mistake, easy to make.
  • 3:54 - 3:56
    Then, what is I think the worst example I know --
  • 3:56 - 3:57
    I know many of them,
  • 3:57 - 3:59
    I see at least one of these
  • 3:59 - 4:01
    in the newspapers every week.
  • 4:01 - 4:03
    But this is a classic one: in the '70s,
  • 4:03 - 4:05
    researchers found that there is a very strong link
  • 4:05 - 4:09
    between kids who do well in school, get good grades,
  • 4:09 - 4:11
    and kids who have a high self-esteem.
  • 4:11 - 4:13
    And they concluded from this
  • 4:13 - 4:15
    that it's very important to make sure that
  • 4:15 - 4:17
    young kids are, you know, raised
  • 4:17 - 4:19
    to be confident and proud of themselves,
  • 4:19 - 4:22
    because if their self-esteem is high,
  • 4:22 - 4:24
    the good results will follow.
  • 4:24 - 4:26
    And this forethought was told to parents,
  • 4:26 - 4:28
    especially in the US, for generations,
  • 4:28 - 4:32
    that just make sure that your kid is proud and confident,
  • 4:32 - 4:33
    then all will turn out well.
  • 4:33 - 4:37
    And many years later, someone did another study
  • 4:37 - 4:38
    just to see in which
  • 4:38 - 4:41
    direction the cause was working.
  • 4:41 - 4:44
    And they found that it was in the opposite direction.
  • 4:44 - 4:47
    So the good grades were causing the self-esteem,
  • 4:47 - 4:50
    and self-esteem wasn't causing good grades.
  • 4:50 - 4:51
    And it was even worse.
  • 4:51 - 4:55
    So kids who are raised just to have high self-confidence,
  • 4:55 - 4:57
    and not excel at anything --
  • 4:57 - 4:58
    it can be sports or music,
  • 4:58 - 5:00
    doesn't have to be school --
  • 5:00 - 5:02
    the kids who are just proud of themselves,
  • 5:02 - 5:03
    and then fail at everything,
  • 5:03 - 5:06
    in the end they will have a very low self-esteem,
  • 5:06 - 5:09
    and not be able to make anything of their life.
  • 5:09 - 5:12
    So this was a very serious correlation mistake.
  • 5:12 - 5:14
    And what I want for today is for you
  • 5:14 - 5:16
    to remember that the next time
  • 5:16 - 5:19
    someone wants to prove that there is a causal relation
  • 5:19 - 5:21
    between something and something else --
  • 5:21 - 5:24
    it can be anything, it can be vaccines and autism,
  • 5:24 - 5:27
    it can be female bankers and the financial crisis,
  • 5:27 - 5:30
    and if they -- (Laughter) -- point out to you
  • 5:30 - 5:32
    that there is a very strong relation,
  • 5:32 - 5:35
    remember that it's not enough to have a correlation.
  • 5:35 - 5:37
    It gives a very good hint of what might be happening,
  • 5:37 - 5:41
    but before you can conclude that one thing causes something else,
  • 5:41 - 5:44
    you need to know why it does and how it does.
  • 5:44 - 5:47
    So, when in doubt, just remember the ice-cream.
