Praying to Grow in Grace - Geoff Thomas

  • 0:01 - 0:05
"But grow in the grace and knowledge
  • 0:05 - 0:08
of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
  • 0:08 - 0:11
To Him be glory both now and forever.
  • 0:11 - 0:12
    Amen."
  • 0:12 - 0:16
    2 Peter 3:18
  • 0:16 - 0:20
    Now, one of the great
    goals of this conference
  • 0:20 - 0:23
is expressed by Peter in these words,
  • 0:23 - 0:26
that we grow in the grace and knowledge
  • 0:26 - 0:29
of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
  • 0:29 - 0:33
Many benefits come from conference -
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    the renewal of friendships,
  • 0:35 - 0:39
    moments of inspiration from speakers,
  • 0:39 - 0:42
    and meeting someone special perhaps,
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    but unless we grow
  • 0:44 - 0:47
    from our time here -
  • 0:47 - 0:48
    grow in graciousness,
  • 0:48 - 0:51
grow in our knowledge of the Savior,
  • 0:51 - 0:55
then there will be major failure
  • 0:55 - 0:58
    in our gathering together.
  • 0:58 - 1:00
Some of you know Don Whitney's
  • 1:00 - 1:03
helpful little book: "Praying the Bible."
  • 1:03 - 1:06
And we gather to pray this Scripture.
  • 1:06 - 1:09
Lord, help me to grow in graciousness.
  • 1:09 - 1:12
Lord, help me to grow in knowledge
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    of the Savior.
  • 1:14 - 1:15
And who needs to pray that?
  • 1:15 - 1:17
Well, the baby Christians here -
  • 1:17 - 1:19
    they need to pray it.
  • 1:19 - 1:22
And then, the man who is the most holy
  • 1:22 - 1:23
    and most mature
  • 1:23 - 1:26
and has followed the Lord for many years -
  • 1:26 - 1:29
he needs to still pray this prayer.
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    So what are we asking
  • 1:31 - 1:33
when we are asking that we may grow
  • 1:33 - 1:35
in grace and in the knowledge
  • 1:35 - 1:38
    of the Lord Jesus Christ?
  • 1:38 - 1:42
Well, firstly, we are asking for genuine,
  • 1:42 - 1:46
    progressive concern for
    the needs of others.
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    The second commandment,
  • 1:48 - 1:50
after to love God with all our hearts
  • 1:50 - 1:53
is to love our neighbor as ourselves.
  • 1:53 - 1:57
And that's the impact that we are to make
  • 1:57 - 1:59
    on one another.
  • 1:59 - 2:02
A real concern for other people.
  • 2:02 - 2:03
    How is it with you?
  • 2:03 - 2:05
    Do we know where
  • 2:05 - 2:07
the members of the congregation are?
  • 2:07 - 2:10
Do we know where there are doubts?
  • 2:10 - 2:12
    Do we know where people
    are close to giving up?
  • 2:12 - 2:14
Do we know where the troubles
  • 2:14 - 2:15
    and the problems are?
  • 2:15 - 2:17
And you'll say, well, the elders know.
  • 2:17 - 2:18
    Well, perhaps they do.
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    But perhaps with some people,
  • 2:20 - 2:22
    you know more.
  • 2:22 - 2:25
I'm not talking about inquisitive prying
  • 2:25 - 2:27
into the lives of other people,
  • 2:27 - 2:31
but I'm speaking about a concern for them.
  • 2:31 - 2:34
    Do they have some fear?
    Do they have some worry?
  • 2:34 - 2:36
    How can I help them?
  • 2:36 - 2:41
    So, that's going to be
    our lives from now on.
  • 2:41 - 2:44
We're going to be corns of wheat
  • 2:44 - 2:45
that fall into the ground and die,
  • 2:45 - 2:48
    or we'll abide alone.
  • 2:48 - 2:50
    We're going to be concerned
  • 2:50 - 2:54
that there be fruit in the lives of others
  • 2:54 - 2:57
and fruit in our own lives.
  • 2:57 - 2:58
The Savior, then, He didn't come
  • 2:58 - 3:01
    to be served,
  • 3:01 - 3:02
    but He came to serve.
  • 3:02 - 3:04
    So He calls us also
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    that we're better servants of one another;
  • 3:06 - 3:07
    more concerned;
  • 3:07 - 3:11
    more aware of the needs.
  • 3:11 - 3:14
    How is it with you?
How is it at meal times?
  • 3:14 - 3:16
Do you look to see if everyone's
    got what they want?
  • 3:16 - 3:18
    And you're concerned about them?
  • 3:18 - 3:22
You just don't look at the
    food in front of you?
  • 3:22 - 3:25
The nicer seats - are you anxious
  • 3:25 - 3:27
    to help other people?
  • 3:27 - 3:28
    When you drive a car,
  • 3:28 - 3:31
do you let other people cut in?
  • 3:31 - 3:33
    When there are family choices,
  • 3:33 - 3:34
    do you ask your wife:
  • 3:34 - 3:36
what do you want to do?
  • 3:36 - 3:38
    Do you ask children
  • 3:38 - 3:40
    what their concerns are?
  • 3:40 - 3:42
    It's a very sad life
  • 3:42 - 3:44
if it's just centered on you.
  • 3:44 - 3:46
    An egotistical life.
  • 3:46 - 3:49
    And so growing in grace,
  • 3:49 - 3:51
    growing in graciousness then
  • 3:51 - 3:53
shows itself in a progressive concern
  • 3:53 - 3:54
    for the needs of others.
  • 3:54 - 3:57
    That's the first thing
    that we're praying for.
  • 3:57 - 4:00
And the second thing we are praying for
  • 4:00 - 4:07
is that we are growing in knowledge
  • 4:07 - 4:10
of the gospel, of the Christian faith,
  • 4:10 - 4:12
    and growing especially
  • 4:12 - 4:15
in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
  • 4:15 - 4:20
A literal, mental grasp with our minds
  • 4:20 - 4:22
of the teaching of Holy Scripture.
  • 4:22 - 4:25
It may seem to you very elementary
  • 4:25 - 4:26
    and very basic.
  • 4:26 - 4:29
    But the first thing that
    a believer puts on
  • 4:29 - 4:31
    is the girdle of truth.
  • 4:31 - 4:33
And the first thing that he must attend to
  • 4:33 - 4:35
    in terms of spiritual knowledge
  • 4:35 - 4:38
    and spiritual growth is familiarity
  • 4:38 - 4:39
    with the truth;
  • 4:39 - 4:41
    with the teaching of Scripture;
  • 4:41 - 4:43
with the system of Christian doctrine.
  • 4:43 - 4:45
It's all very well for us to speak
  • 4:45 - 4:48
of the perils of a dead orthodoxy,
  • 4:48 - 4:51
    and I guess it's a real peril.
  • 4:51 - 4:55
There are people and their concern
  • 4:55 - 4:59
is not interest in the great
    foundational doctrines,
  • 4:59 - 5:02
    but they're interested in
    the conundrum of theology.
  • 5:02 - 5:04
    And let's avoid that.
  • 5:04 - 5:05
    And there are other people
  • 5:05 - 5:08
    and they're only
    interested in the doctrines
  • 5:08 - 5:11
that have given rise to controversies
  • 5:11 - 5:12
    amongst Christians.
  • 5:12 - 5:14
    Doctrines that men fight about.
  • 5:14 - 5:17
    Doctrines that men disagree with.
  • 5:17 - 5:20
    Let's mortify that spirit too.
  • 5:20 - 5:23
But we are bound as Christians
  • 5:23 - 5:26
    to make conscience of growing
  • 5:26 - 5:28
in our grasp of Genesis, Exodus,
  • 5:28 - 5:30
    Leviticus, Numbers, and so on
  • 5:30 - 5:32
    to Revelation.
  • 5:32 - 5:36
And to that life of Adam, and Noah,
  • 5:36 - 5:40
    and Abraham, and the Patriarchs,
  • 5:40 - 5:42
    and Moses,
  • 5:42 - 5:46
    and the deliverance from Egypt,
  • 5:46 - 5:49
and then the time of the entry
  • 5:49 - 5:53
    and Joshua and Judges,
  • 5:53 - 5:54
    and Samuel,
  • 5:54 - 5:55
    and the rise of Saul,
  • 5:55 - 5:56
    and the rise of David,
  • 5:56 - 5:58
and Solomon - the great division
  • 5:58 - 6:00
    that took place under him,
  • 6:00 - 6:03
    and then the destruction
  • 6:03 - 6:05
of the Northern kingdom of Israel,
  • 6:05 - 6:10
    and then the temporary
    Babylonian captivity
  • 6:10 - 6:12
    of Judah and their return,
  • 6:12 - 6:14
    and the coming of Christ
  • 6:14 - 6:15
    as promised.
  • 6:15 - 6:17
So, we ought to know those things.
  • 6:17 - 6:20
    And know the letters.
  • 6:20 - 6:21
And so when the Jehovah's Witness
  • 6:21 - 6:22
    comes to your house,
  • 6:22 - 6:24
    then you say,
    "Do you know the Bible?"
  • 6:24 - 6:26
    "Yes."
"Well, what..." you say to him,
  • 6:26 - 6:28
    "What is the main theme
  • 6:28 - 6:30
of the letter to the Romans?"
  • 6:30 - 6:32
And that's a good question to ask him
  • 6:32 - 6:33
    because he won't know.
  • 6:33 - 6:36
    He'll know his stuff,
  • 6:36 - 6:38
but he won't know a question
    as important as that.
  • 6:38 - 6:41
"Well, Ephesians is shorter," you say,
  • 6:41 - 6:42
    "six chapters - tell me,
  • 6:42 - 6:46
what is the main teaching of Ephesians?"
  • 6:46 - 6:48
And then he'll get a bit frustrated
  • 6:48 - 6:49
    and angry with you.
  • 6:49 - 6:53
"Well now, come back and let me know."
  • 6:53 - 6:55
Because you're driving him to the Word.
  • 6:55 - 6:57
Aren't you? To read the Word.
  • 6:57 - 7:02
    And that is the only
    chance of him changing.
  • 7:02 - 7:04
And so I'm saying to you
  • 7:04 - 7:06
    we have to soak ourselves
  • 7:06 - 7:08
    in the Word;
  • 7:08 - 7:10
marinate ourselves in the Word of God,
  • 7:10 - 7:13
because if we're going to ask then
  • 7:13 - 7:15
a Jehovah's Witness to tell us
  • 7:15 - 7:17
what the main theme of Romans is,
  • 7:17 - 7:19
    we better know it ourselves.
  • 7:19 - 7:21
    We better know it ourselves.
  • 7:21 - 7:24
    So, we ought to know
    about the Person of Christ.
  • 7:24 - 7:26
    His deity, His humanity,
  • 7:26 - 7:28
    His incarnation,
  • 7:28 - 7:31
    His states as pre-existent,
  • 7:31 - 7:33
    humiliated, exalted;
  • 7:33 - 7:36
His offices of Prophet, Priest, and King.
  • 7:36 - 7:38
We ought to know the great doctrines
  • 7:38 - 7:40
    of God's sovereignty,
  • 7:40 - 7:43
of justification by grace through faith,
  • 7:43 - 7:44
    of adoption,
  • 7:44 - 7:45
    of union with Christ,
  • 7:45 - 7:47
    of sanctification.
  • 7:47 - 7:51
    These teachings are not
    simply for theologians,
  • 7:51 - 7:54
    but they are the stuff
    of believing meditation.
  • 7:54 - 7:55
They are the stuff of doxology.
  • 7:55 - 7:59
The great hymns are about those themes.
  • 7:59 - 8:01
And if we're to be growing Christians,
  • 8:01 - 8:04
we are to be growing intellectually.
  • 8:04 - 8:06
We are to be growing theologically.
  • 8:06 - 8:09
We are to grow in our grasp of it,
  • 8:09 - 8:10
    and we are to grow
  • 8:10 - 8:12
in the emotional impact that they make
  • 8:12 - 8:15
    upon our lives.
  • 8:15 - 8:18
That the Word of God lives in us.
  • 8:18 - 8:20
Because the Psalms begin by a man -
  • 8:20 - 8:23
his delight was in the law of the Lord,
  • 8:23 - 8:24
    and in that law,
  • 8:24 - 8:27
    he meditated day and night.
  • 8:27 - 8:30
Thirdly, if we are praying this prayer
  • 8:30 - 8:32
that we might grow in graciousness,
  • 8:32 - 8:35
in grace, we are praying that we might
  • 8:35 - 8:39
    progress in conscientiousness.
  • 8:39 - 8:43
    That is, in responsiveness
  • 8:43 - 8:46
and obedience to our own consciences.
  • 8:46 - 8:49
Because God has placed that monitor
  • 8:49 - 8:51
    in our minds,
  • 8:51 - 8:53
and it reproves us when we do wrong,
  • 8:53 - 8:57
and it encourages us when we do right.
  • 8:57 - 9:00
    How is it with your
    conscience and you tonight?
  • 9:00 - 9:02
    How are things between you
  • 9:02 - 9:08
and that monitor, that voice of God?
  • 9:08 - 9:10
You know, there are many consciences,
  • 9:10 - 9:13
    and in Thomas Boston's words,
  • 9:13 - 9:17
    they are too persnickety.
  • 9:17 - 9:20
    They condemn what God's
    Word doesn't condemn.
  • 9:20 - 9:23
    We must educate that conscience.
  • 9:23 - 9:27
Does the Bible condemn blood transfusions,
  • 9:27 - 9:28
    for example?
  • 9:28 - 9:31
    And there are other consciences
  • 9:31 - 9:33
    and they let anything pass.
  • 9:33 - 9:37
They let pass what God's Word condemns.
  • 9:37 - 9:39
    They are less sensitive
    than they should be.
  • 9:39 - 9:41
    They are much too broad,
  • 9:41 - 9:42
    much too open.
  • 9:42 - 9:45
So, we must always bring our conscience
  • 9:45 - 9:47
under the light of the Word of God.
  • 9:47 - 9:50
You know the Puritan illustration then
  • 9:50 - 9:52
    of the sundial.
  • 9:52 - 9:54
    And the sundial will work
  • 9:54 - 9:56
if it's at the right angle
  • 9:56 - 10:00
and in regards to the light of the sun.
  • 10:00 - 10:01
But on a bright moonlight night,
  • 10:01 - 10:03
you can go out to your garden,
  • 10:03 - 10:04
and you can look at a sundial.
  • 10:04 - 10:05
And there will be a shadow -
  • 10:05 - 10:07
    a moon shadow.
  • 10:07 - 10:11
And it will give you the
    totally wrong reading,
  • 10:11 - 10:13
    because it's not a moondial,
  • 10:13 - 10:16
    it's a sundial.
  • 10:16 - 10:19
And so there is the conscience
  • 10:19 - 10:21
    of the cannibal.
  • 10:21 - 10:24
    And there the conscience
  • 10:24 - 10:27
    of the abortionist.
  • 10:27 - 10:30
And they are not living in accord
  • 10:30 - 10:34
with what the Word of God
  • 10:34 - 10:39
who created the conscience gives to us.
  • 10:39 - 10:41
Now, let's supposed that you have
  • 10:41 - 10:42
    an enlightened conscience.
  • 10:42 - 10:44
Let's suppose that you have the full light
  • 10:44 - 10:47
of God's Word on your conscience then.
  • 10:47 - 10:51
    Are you carefully obeying it
  • 10:51 - 10:55
    when you are emotionally disinclined?
  • 10:55 - 10:57
When you're lying on the floor
  • 10:57 - 10:59
    in despondency and sulking
  • 10:59 - 11:02
and unhappy because your worst fears
  • 11:02 - 11:04
    have been realized?
  • 11:04 - 11:06
When you're in the depth of depression
  • 11:06 - 11:08
    and self-pity,
  • 11:08 - 11:10
    and there's a duty that
you have to attend to -
  • 11:10 - 11:12
    it's a duty, it's very unpleasant;
  • 11:12 - 11:14
    it's very demanding.
  • 11:14 - 11:18
Do you do what your conscience tells you
  • 11:18 - 11:20
    that you should do?
  • 11:20 - 11:24
    Do you have the maturity
    to stand on your emotions
  • 11:24 - 11:26
and reject them in the face
  • 11:26 - 11:29
    of their reluctance and aversion
  • 11:29 - 11:32
to attend what God commands us?
  • 11:32 - 11:35
    There's no greater peril
    in the Christian life
  • 11:35 - 11:38
than to make our emotions the touchstone
  • 11:38 - 11:40
    of our duties.
  • 11:40 - 11:44
    And time and again, we
    have to pick ourselves up
  • 11:44 - 11:47
off the floor of discouragement and say,
  • 11:47 - 11:48
    I have a duty,
  • 11:48 - 11:49
and I know this is right,
  • 11:49 - 11:51
and I'm going to do it.
  • 11:51 - 11:53
Or again, let me ask you,
  • 11:53 - 11:56
are you conscientious about small things?
  • 11:56 - 11:58
    Because there most of all
  • 11:58 - 12:00
    Christians are tested.
  • 12:00 - 12:02
We don't have huge sacrifices to make,
  • 12:02 - 12:05
    but every day, there are
  • 12:05 - 12:09
    many little duties that you
    know have to be done.
  • 12:09 - 12:12
And we have to pay careful attention
  • 12:12 - 12:15
    to matters of detail,
  • 12:15 - 12:19
because our Lord, He commends people
  • 12:19 - 12:22
who are faithful in little things.
  • 12:22 - 12:24
And so often we are losing the battle
  • 12:24 - 12:27
    in little things.
  • 12:27 - 12:30
    It might seem to you
  • 12:30 - 12:35
not a big issue to be in prayer meeting
  • 12:35 - 12:38
    on a Wednesday night there.
  • 12:38 - 12:41
It might not seem a big issue
  • 12:41 - 12:44
to be in Sunday nights at church.
  • 12:44 - 12:46
    It's a small thing.
  • 12:46 - 12:48
It might seem just a little thing
  • 12:48 - 12:53
to ignore writing a letter to someone
  • 12:53 - 12:57
to say thanks for your kindness to me.
  • 12:57 - 12:59
    Certain things.
  • 12:59 - 13:02
But we must make conscience then
  • 13:02 - 13:04
if we are going to grow in graciousness
  • 13:04 - 13:07
our conscience - we respect it.
  • 13:07 - 13:11
Whatsoever is not of faith is sin.
  • 13:11 - 13:13
    And then fourthly, we must
  • 13:13 - 13:21
    make progress in victory
    over besetting sins.
  • 13:21 - 13:23
    And that's a great reality
    in the Christian life.
  • 13:23 - 13:26
There's just some sin that you know
  • 13:26 - 13:29
    it's a problem for you, isn't it?
  • 13:29 - 13:32
And you know you're not going to grow
  • 13:32 - 13:35
unless you deal with that particular sin.
  • 13:35 - 13:38
It's perfectly possible to be normal
  • 13:38 - 13:41
in every part of the Christian life
  • 13:41 - 13:44
in your emotions and your affections
  • 13:44 - 13:45
    and will and so on.
  • 13:45 - 13:47
Everything seems to be in order
  • 13:47 - 13:51
    except at one point.
  • 13:51 - 13:54
You're in the grip of one temptation.
  • 13:54 - 13:58
You are dominated by one lust.
  • 13:58 - 14:01
You are entangled in the meshes
  • 14:01 - 14:03
    of one particular sin.
  • 14:03 - 14:06
And you see it in the world around you.
  • 14:06 - 14:09
    It's called monomania.
  • 14:09 - 14:16
One man - in 99 out of
    100 areas of his life
  • 14:16 - 14:18
    he's straight down the line.
  • 14:18 - 14:20
But there's one area of his life
  • 14:20 - 14:23
    where he's walked,
  • 14:23 - 14:27
and he's grasped by one sin.
  • 14:27 - 14:28
    And when you say,
  • 14:28 - 14:31
well, it may be a mysterious thing
  • 14:31 - 14:33
that I'm not growing as I should be
  • 14:33 - 14:35
    as a Christian.
  • 14:35 - 14:38
    Is it so mysterious?
  • 14:38 - 14:40
Is the reason why I'm not growing
  • 14:40 - 14:44
as I should be because my spiritual life
  • 14:44 - 14:49
    is diseased in one area.
  • 14:49 - 14:52
    Unless it's dealt with,
  • 14:52 - 14:55
it's going to - just like a bug,
  • 14:55 - 14:58
a virus is just in one part of you
  • 14:58 - 15:00
and it affects the rest of you.
  • 15:00 - 15:03
You're weak and listless and so on.
  • 15:03 - 15:06
You must deal with that besetting sin.
  • 15:06 - 15:09
    Worldliness, prayerlessness,
  • 15:09 - 15:11
    irritability, impatience,
  • 15:11 - 15:14
    aggressiveness, what have you...
  • 15:14 - 15:17
    So, those are four,
  • 15:17 - 15:19
    and then one more point
  • 15:19 - 15:21
in which when we are praying for
  • 15:21 - 15:24
    growing in grace,
  • 15:24 - 15:28
we are praying that we should grow
  • 15:28 - 15:32
    in evangelistic earnestness.
  • 15:32 - 15:35
    Now, you know, when you
    first knew the Lord,
  • 15:35 - 15:37
you see it in the young convert -
  • 15:37 - 15:42
it's lovely to see - how bold he is.
  • 15:42 - 15:43
    You tremble at times
  • 15:43 - 15:45
    because he'll blurt out things
  • 15:45 - 15:50
    that you might have
    said rather more sweetly.
  • 15:50 - 15:52
But he just sees the world's need
  • 15:52 - 15:54
and he sees Christ as a great Savior.
  • 15:54 - 15:57
    And he speaks a word
  • 15:57 - 15:59
    in and out of season.
  • 15:59 - 16:02
And the mature amongst us, we smile
  • 16:02 - 16:04
    and we may sneer even,
  • 16:04 - 16:07
because much of it was immature.
  • 16:07 - 16:10
The witness was unwise and indiscreet
  • 16:10 - 16:12
    and ineffectual.
  • 16:12 - 16:15
But that does not justify that fact
  • 16:15 - 16:20
that many Christians as they grow older,
  • 16:20 - 16:24
they grow more reticent and quieter
  • 16:24 - 16:27
and share their faith less and less.
  • 16:27 - 16:32
    The vision of the world's
    lostness just disappears.
  • 16:32 - 16:36
And that's a maturity that our churches
  • 16:36 - 16:38
    need to do without.
  • 16:38 - 16:40
    It's expected sometimes -
  • 16:40 - 16:41
    it's only the young people
  • 16:41 - 16:45
who go out on missions and work
  • 16:45 - 16:50
and go to Mexico for a week and so on.
  • 16:50 - 16:54
    And they haven't the equipment;
  • 16:54 - 16:55
    they haven't the wisdom.
  • 16:55 - 16:59
    They're great helpers, but
    they're not great leaders.
  • 16:59 - 17:02
So, as we've been coming now,
  • 17:02 - 17:03
    we've been Christians many years.
  • 17:03 - 17:05
    How is it with you
  • 17:05 - 17:09
    and your evangelistic concern?
  • 17:09 - 17:12
Are you prepared to get involved
  • 17:12 - 17:16
    in every true evangelistic cause?
  • 17:16 - 17:17
Are you prepared to support it
  • 17:17 - 17:20
and pray and give and cooperate?
  • 17:20 - 17:23
    I know there's a lot of
    misplaced evangelism.
  • 17:23 - 17:26
    I can give statistics for
    evangelistic failure,
  • 17:26 - 17:28
    and you know all that.
  • 17:28 - 17:31
And that won't help us at all.
  • 17:31 - 17:33
    We must stand back
  • 17:33 - 17:36
    from simply criticizing.
  • 17:36 - 17:40
And we have to be involved in every form
  • 17:40 - 17:42
    of biblical evangelism.
  • 17:42 - 17:44
    We have to do that.
  • 17:44 - 17:47
And it's a sad thing for any Christian
  • 17:47 - 17:50
    if that vision is gone.
  • 17:50 - 17:53
    So, I'm saying, those
    are the sorts of things
  • 17:53 - 17:59
we are praying for when we hear
  • 17:59 - 18:03
    the exhortation - the
    last words of Peter -
  • 18:03 - 18:06
    but grow in grace;
  • 18:06 - 18:08
    grow in graciousness.
  • 18:08 - 18:11
    And we're talking about making
  • 18:11 - 18:14
    progress in being
    concerned for other people.
  • 18:14 - 18:19
And growing in our knowledge of the Bible
  • 18:19 - 18:20
    and what the Bible teaches.
  • 18:20 - 18:23
    And growing in conscientiousness.
  • 18:23 - 18:26
    And growing in victory
    over besetting sins.
  • 18:26 - 18:31
    And growing in evangelistic earnestness.
  • 18:31 - 18:36
And then, very briefly, as a postscript.
  • 18:36 - 18:40
How is this to be achieved?
  • 18:40 - 18:43
How are we as Christians going to grow?
  • 18:43 - 18:45
    And the first answer is
  • 18:45 - 18:50
that it must be a priority in our lives.
  • 18:50 - 18:53
These are Peter's last words, aren't they?
  • 18:53 - 18:56
Think of the life he lived.
  • 18:56 - 18:57
    He preached at Pentecost
  • 18:57 - 18:59
    and 3,000 were converted.
  • 18:59 - 19:02
Do you think he would sort of float along
  • 19:02 - 19:05
in the glow of that for
    the rest of his life?
  • 19:05 - 19:07
But he doesn't. He's here and there,
  • 19:07 - 19:09
and he's going to Cornelius' household,
  • 19:09 - 19:13
    and he's traveling and he's
    speaking everywhere.
  • 19:13 - 19:15
And his last words to people are:
  • 19:15 - 19:20
grow now; grow in the grace
  • 19:20 - 19:23
and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • 19:23 - 19:25
That's the greatest thing in our lives.
  • 19:25 - 19:27
There's nothing more important for us.
  • 19:27 - 19:30
    What's more important than this?
  • 19:30 - 19:33
In the midst of all the other engagements
  • 19:33 - 19:36
    and preoccupations and concerns,
  • 19:36 - 19:39
    a Christian's relationship with God
  • 19:39 - 19:42
    controls his life.
  • 19:42 - 19:45
It's what his life is built around.
  • 19:45 - 19:48
And his greatest longing is to be more fit
  • 19:48 - 19:51
    for the Master's use.
  • 19:51 - 19:54
This one thing I do - one thing,
  • 19:54 - 19:55
    the apostle says,
  • 19:55 - 19:59
a single eye Jesus speaks about.
  • 19:59 - 20:01
I look at my own life and I wonder
  • 20:01 - 20:03
as the years have gone by,
  • 20:03 - 20:07
have I changed that scale of values
  • 20:07 - 20:10
    and my sense of priorities?
  • 20:10 - 20:13
I know it's easy to react against
  • 20:13 - 20:16
    extreme religionism.
  • 20:16 - 20:19
A person just talks about religion
  • 20:19 - 20:21
and isn't interested in anything else.
  • 20:21 - 20:23
    That's unbiblical too,
  • 20:23 - 20:24
    because in the Bible,
  • 20:24 - 20:29
    they talk about all
    that's in God's creation.
  • 20:29 - 20:30
But there's a far greater peril
  • 20:30 - 20:32
    than that sort of extreme.
  • 20:32 - 20:34
    And that's a reduction
  • 20:34 - 20:37
    of religious aspiration;
  • 20:37 - 20:40
    of religious vision;
  • 20:40 - 20:44
    of a relegation of my
    relationship to Christ
  • 20:44 - 20:48
to not be the first thing
  • 20:48 - 20:51
and the greatest thing in my life.
  • 20:51 - 20:54
And at times I think it's happened to me.
  • 20:54 - 20:58
And it's happened to other people.
  • 20:58 - 21:03
That things that should be primary
  • 21:03 - 21:08
have become secondary in my priorities.
  • 21:08 - 21:13
And I think as I look at my old church,
  • 21:13 - 21:16
and at evangelicalism as I meet it,
  • 21:16 - 21:20
    I see slackness and sloppiness
  • 21:20 - 21:24
coming into so many areas of church life.
  • 21:24 - 21:29
For to me, to live is Christ.
  • 21:29 - 21:32
That's what he says, isn't it?
  • 21:32 - 21:35
If our chief end in life is not that,
  • 21:35 - 21:39
we are facing the most appalling
  • 21:39 - 21:42
    and unhappy futures.
  • 21:42 - 21:44
    And then secondly,
  • 21:44 - 21:45
it must be a priority -
  • 21:45 - 21:48
    secondly, our religious lives
  • 21:48 - 21:52
are not going to take care of themselves.
  • 21:52 - 21:55
We can't simply expect our soul
  • 21:55 - 21:57
    to nourish and fend for itself;
  • 21:57 - 21:59
    to provide for itself.
  • 21:59 - 22:00
You have to see for it.
  • 22:00 - 22:03
I have all the weight of
    an apostle's command
  • 22:03 - 22:09
to say you have to grow.
  • 22:09 - 22:11
You have to make sure you are growing,
  • 22:11 - 22:13
and that applies to every form of life.
  • 22:13 - 22:15
    We're concerned for our plants.
  • 22:15 - 22:17
We give our key to our neighbor
  • 22:17 - 22:19
and we say I'm going to Florida now
  • 22:19 - 22:22
for two weeks, can you feed the plants?
  • 22:22 - 22:24
    When I'm away, we're concerned
  • 22:24 - 22:30
about the bushes and the flowers.
  • 22:30 - 22:32
We're concerned about our animals -
  • 22:32 - 22:35
    how they'll be fed.
  • 22:35 - 22:37
    And our minds
  • 22:37 - 22:39
    and our intellects -
  • 22:39 - 22:43
what stuff we are feeding our minds with.
  • 22:43 - 22:46
    They won't look after themselves.
  • 22:46 - 22:48
    And so our souls -
  • 22:48 - 22:50
our souls won't look after themselves.
  • 22:50 - 22:53
We have to feed our souls,
  • 22:53 - 23:00
as a program of provision for them.
  • 23:00 - 23:01
Peter speaks in the 17th verse
  • 23:01 - 23:02
    about being led away
  • 23:02 - 23:04
with the error of the wicked,
  • 23:04 - 23:06
    and we all know people
    who've been led away
  • 23:06 - 23:08
    because they didn't look after
  • 23:08 - 23:14
    their own souls.
  • 23:14 - 23:16
    There are people -
  • 23:16 - 23:18
and Paul tells Timothy about them -
  • 23:18 - 23:25
they have a form of godliness.
  • 23:25 - 23:29
And they go to church and so on.
  • 23:29 - 23:32
    But it's just a form.
  • 23:32 - 23:34
    It's formalistic.
  • 23:34 - 23:36
    That's it.
  • 23:36 - 23:38
    There's nothing under it.
  • 23:38 - 23:41
    Nothing beneath it at all.
  • 23:41 - 23:47
So, let's be so careful about this.
  • 23:47 - 23:49
    You know, not to prove
  • 23:49 - 23:52
    I'm not a Puritan.
  • 23:52 - 23:54
    Not to prove to people
  • 23:54 - 23:56
    that I'm not narrow-minded;
  • 23:56 - 23:57
that I believe in Christian liberty
  • 23:57 - 24:00
    and the freedom of conscience.
  • 24:00 - 24:03
To show people I know about politics
  • 24:03 - 24:06
and I can speak about all these things.
  • 24:06 - 24:08
I wonder if some of the energy
  • 24:08 - 24:11
    that we pour into that,
  • 24:11 - 24:13
    can be poured into
  • 24:13 - 24:17
    my relationship with Jesus Christ.
  • 24:17 - 24:20
    And that I'm growing.
  • 24:20 - 24:22
I'm growing in the knowledge of Him.
  • 24:22 - 24:24
    My Savior.
  • 24:24 - 24:26
And that I'm feeding my soul.
  • 24:26 - 24:28
So, how do we do this?
  • 24:28 - 24:32
Well, it must be a priority in our lives.
  • 24:32 - 24:34
And then, we must be aware
  • 24:34 - 24:36
    that we've got a duty to feed our souls;
  • 24:36 - 24:38
that they won't look after themselves.
  • 24:38 - 24:44
    And then Peter tells us
    in this 14th verse:
  • 24:44 - 24:46
    "To make every effort
  • 24:46 - 24:48
    to be diligent..." he says.
  • 24:48 - 24:51
    Be diligent.
  • 24:51 - 24:53
    And in what direction?
  • 24:53 - 24:56
    Well, you've got to seek
    food for your souls.
  • 24:56 - 24:58
You've got to get away to a conference.
  • 24:58 - 25:01
Travel a long distance to be here.
  • 25:01 - 25:03
    Drive 15 hours.
  • 25:03 - 25:05
    Drive through the night.
  • 25:05 - 25:08
    Drive just to be here.
  • 25:08 - 25:11
    And search for things
    that can nourish you
  • 25:11 - 25:13
    and build up your knowledge
  • 25:13 - 25:17
    and your graciousness;
  • 25:17 - 25:20
that you don't want to be unfruitful
  • 25:20 - 25:22
    and static,
  • 25:22 - 25:24
    but there's a dynamism,
  • 25:24 - 25:26
    and a maturing,
  • 25:26 - 25:29
and a beauty, and a fragrance,
  • 25:29 - 25:32
and a loveliness about your life.
  • 25:32 - 25:34
    You're seeking for truths
    that will do that.
  • 25:34 - 25:37
    That will produce love,
  • 25:37 - 25:38
    and joy, and peace,
  • 25:38 - 25:41
    and longsuffering, and gentleness,
  • 25:41 - 25:42
    and goodness, and faithfulness,
  • 25:42 - 25:45
    and meekness, and self-control.
  • 25:45 - 25:48
You've got to fall in love with the Bible.
  • 25:48 - 25:49
    You've got to search it.
  • 25:49 - 25:50
    You've got to ransack it.
  • 25:50 - 25:53
You've got to sit under the
    best ministry you can
  • 25:53 - 25:55
    on a Sunday.
  • 25:55 - 25:56
You've got to read the best books.
  • 25:56 - 25:58
You've got to sit and listen
  • 25:58 - 26:01
to older Christians as they talk together
  • 26:01 - 26:03
and they reminisce about how God
  • 26:03 - 26:05
has dealt with them over the years,
  • 26:05 - 26:07
    and learn from them
  • 26:07 - 26:08
    the mysterious influence
  • 26:08 - 26:10
that one Christian can have over another.
  • 26:10 - 26:13
    You seek good fellowship
  • 26:13 - 26:14
    with other Christians.
  • 26:14 - 26:16
And you hunger for truth -
  • 26:16 - 26:18
you want the Word of God to come
  • 26:18 - 26:19
    not in word only,
  • 26:19 - 26:22
but power and the Holy Spirit
  • 26:22 - 26:24
    and much assurance.
  • 26:24 - 26:25
    Fall with love.
  • 26:25 - 26:28
    Meditating upon Scripture.
  • 26:28 - 26:30
    Praying Scripture.
  • 26:30 - 26:32
So, you read a verse like this:
  • 26:32 - 26:34
"But grow in the grace and knowledge
  • 26:34 - 26:35
    of our Lord and Savior..."
  • 26:35 - 26:37
And you say, "Lord, me too.
  • 26:37 - 26:39
    I want to grow.
  • 26:39 - 26:40
    I want to grow.
  • 26:40 - 26:43
    This week, I've got a special time here;
  • 26:43 - 26:44
    special privileges.
  • 26:44 - 26:46
    Help me to grow
  • 26:46 - 26:49
in the grace and knowledge of my Savior
  • 26:49 - 26:52
    Jesus Christ."
  • 26:52 - 26:56
    Because your souls
    won't grow without food.
  • 26:56 - 27:00
And there's no food for the soul
  • 27:00 - 27:01
    like the Word of God.
  • 27:01 - 27:04
There's no place to be better
  • 27:04 - 27:09
than before the face of Jesus Christ.
  • 27:09 - 27:16
    You need that.
  • 27:16 - 27:18
    Let's pray together.
  • 27:18 - 27:19
    Heavenly Father,
  • 27:19 - 27:24
    we've heard these searching exhortations,
  • 27:24 - 27:27
and so now we just roll
    them out before Thee,
  • 27:27 - 27:31
and oh, we wish we were much stronger,
  • 27:31 - 27:34
and maturer, and wiser, and more loving,
  • 27:34 - 27:37
    and more patient, and gentle,
  • 27:37 - 27:39
    and longsuffering.
  • 27:39 - 27:43
Oh, we wish there was more purity
  • 27:43 - 27:47
and love for what is good and holy.
  • 27:47 - 27:49
Oh Lord, give us a nudge.
  • 27:49 - 27:51
Give us a little push -
  • 27:51 - 27:54
a big push as we go.
  • 27:54 - 27:56
    Speak to us.
  • 27:56 - 27:57
    Humble us.
  • 27:57 - 28:00
    Encourage us in the
    Christian life this week.
  • 28:00 - 28:04
That as a result of being
    in the conference,
  • 28:04 - 28:07
    we'll grow in the grace
  • 28:07 - 28:10
and knowledge of our Savior Jesus Christ
  • 28:10 - 28:13
to whom be glory forever and ever,
  • 28:13 - 28:15
    Amen.
