So many Denominations, which one is true? - Tim Conway

  • 0:11 - 0:14
    This one comes from Matthew.
  • 0:14 - 0:15
    "Denominations.
  • 0:15 - 0:17
    There's lots of them today.
  • 0:17 - 0:19
    It's frustrating finding the truth.
  • 0:19 - 0:22
    Is everyone wrong?
  • 0:22 - 0:23
    There's only one truth.
  • 0:23 - 0:24
    One interpretation.
  • 0:24 - 0:25
    One right answer.
  • 0:25 - 0:29
How on earth do you find it?"
  • 0:29 - 0:32
    Think that's a good question?
  • 0:32 - 0:34
The thing I would say to Matthew,
  • 0:34 - 0:36
is Matthew, for one, I'll tell you this,
  • 0:36 - 0:38
you don't find it in denominations,
  • 0:38 - 0:40
and you don't find it in men.
  • 0:40 - 0:45
    Basically,
  • 0:45 - 0:48
what is the source of truth?
  • 0:48 - 0:53
    Jesus Christ says, "Sanctify them...
  • 0:53 - 0:55
    by Your truth.
  • 0:55 - 0:59
    Your Word is truth."
  • 0:59 - 1:02
That's where we have to go.
  • 1:02 - 1:05
    John 8:31, "Jesus said
    to the Jews who had
  • 1:05 - 1:08
    believed in Him,
  • 1:08 - 1:11
'If you abide in My Word,
  • 1:11 - 1:15
    you are truly My disciples.
  • 1:15 - 1:17
And you will know the truth,
  • 1:17 - 1:20
and the truth will set you free.'"
  • 1:20 - 1:23
    How does anybody come
    to know the truth?
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    I mean, if you don't
    know what the truth is,
  • 1:25 - 1:29
how do you come to know it?
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    You go to God's Word.
  • 1:31 - 1:33
    What happened?
  • 1:33 - 1:34
    You go to Acts 17.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
    Who was noble?
  • 1:37 - 1:38
You know what I would have
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    Connie put on the calendar?
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    That this is called the
    Berean Bible Study.
  • 1:42 - 1:45
    You know why I wanted
    it to be called that?
  • 1:45 - 1:47
    Basically people that searched
    the Word of God;
  • 1:47 - 1:50
    they were noble and they
    searched the Word of God
  • 1:50 - 1:54
to see if these things were true.
  • 1:54 - 1:57
    That's how we're going
    to find truth.
  • 1:57 - 1:59
    Listen,
  • 1:59 - 2:02
the reality is that you can come across
  • 2:02 - 2:05
    Methodists, Lutherans,
  • 2:05 - 2:08
    you can come across Presbyterians,
  • 2:08 - 2:09
    you can come across Brethren,
  • 2:09 - 2:12
    you can come across Congregationalists,
  • 2:12 - 2:15
    EV Free people
  • 2:15 - 2:18
    that have truth.
  • 2:18 - 2:19
And you can come across a lot
  • 2:19 - 2:23
    of Baptists who don't
    have much truth.
  • 2:23 - 2:27
You know, we can get all
    hung up with denominations.
  • 2:27 - 2:29
And of course, the Catholic church
  • 2:29 - 2:31
    likes to say, "Well, they
    all broke away from us.
  • 2:31 - 2:32
    That's why there's
    so many of them.
  • 2:32 - 2:34
    We were the true church
    in the beginning
  • 2:34 - 2:37
    And there's all this multiplicity
    of denominations.
  • 2:37 - 2:38
    We're only one.
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    And then you have all
    these denominations
  • 2:40 - 2:42
because they broke off from us."
  • 2:42 - 2:43
    That's not true.
  • 2:43 - 2:45
    And basically what
    all the denominations
  • 2:45 - 2:47
prove to us, is that you've got
  • 2:47 - 2:48
    a lot of different people
  • 2:48 - 2:50
interpreting a lot of different things
  • 2:50 - 2:52
in the Bible, in a whole lot
    of different ways.
  • 2:52 - 2:53
    And you say,
  • 2:53 - 2:55
well, how am I supposed to know?
  • 2:55 - 2:57
    If you've got these
    people over here
  • 2:57 - 2:58
    that interpret it that way;
  • 2:58 - 3:00
    and these people over here,
    that interpret it that way.
  • 3:00 - 3:03
    These people over here,
    interpret it that way.
  • 3:03 - 3:06
Well, I can tell you this.
  • 3:06 - 3:07
    There are some basic essentials
  • 3:07 - 3:10
to the Gospel that if you believe,
    you'll be saved.
  • 3:10 - 3:14
Even if you're off on other parts.
  • 3:14 - 3:15
    Folks, wouldn't we agree,
  • 3:15 - 3:17
    there are Presbyterians in heaven
  • 3:17 - 3:19
that got it wrong on baptism.
  • 3:19 - 3:20
    Right?
  • 3:20 - 3:22
    Congregationalists.
  • 3:22 - 3:24
    We might say there that
they got it wrong over here.
  • 3:24 - 3:28
    But there are those that
    got it right enough.
  • 3:28 - 3:29
    Folks, I'm reading right now
  • 3:29 - 3:33
    about some Lutherans that
    had a whole lot right.
  • 3:33 - 3:34
    And I've read before about
  • 3:34 - 3:38
    some Methodists that have
    a whole lot right.
  • 3:38 - 3:40
    And bottom line,
  • 3:40 - 3:42
how do we determine right and wrong?
  • 3:42 - 3:44
It's not by the denominational label
  • 3:44 - 3:46
    that somebody holds.
  • 3:46 - 3:47
    It certainly isn't,
  • 3:47 - 3:49
    you drive down the road
    and you see a sign
  • 3:49 - 3:51
    that says "Baptist"
    and you can say,
  • 3:51 - 3:52
    "Oh, well, they've
    got the truth."
  • 3:52 - 3:56
    How do you know?
  • 3:56 - 3:58
    The Apostle John said this,
  • 3:58 - 4:00
    he says "test the spirits."
  • 4:00 - 4:02
How in the world do you test the spirits?
  • 4:02 - 4:05
    Paul speaking to the Thessalonians
    said the same thing.
  • 4:05 - 4:06
    Test everything.
  • 4:06 - 4:08
    Hold fast to what's good.
  • 4:08 - 4:09
Or, hold fast to what's true.
  • 4:09 - 4:11
    How do you know?
  • 4:11 - 4:12
    How do you know
    what to hold fast to?
  • 4:12 - 4:15
You've got to be like the Bereans.
  • 4:15 - 4:16
    What happened?
  • 4:16 - 4:19
What was it that the Bereans did?
  • 4:19 - 4:21
    They searched the Scriptures.
  • 4:21 - 4:24
But what did they search the
    Scriptures to do?
  • 4:24 - 4:27
What in the world even possessed
    them to search the Scriptures?
  • 4:27 - 4:31
Well, they had heard teaching, right?
  • 4:31 - 4:33
    They sat under teaching.
  • 4:33 - 4:35
    They'd heard somebody preach,
  • 4:35 - 4:37
    and then they went
    to the Word of God
  • 4:37 - 4:38
to see if it was true.
  • 4:38 - 4:39
    You know what?
  • 4:39 - 4:42
I call this Berean Bible Study,
  • 4:42 - 4:44
because I hope that you folks
  • 4:44 - 4:47
are going to be folks that
are going to know the Bible much.
  • 4:47 - 4:48
    Jesus Christ said,
  • 4:48 - 4:52
"You will know the truth, and
the truth will set you free."
  • 4:52 - 4:53
How do people know the truth?
  • 4:53 - 4:56
    They know the truth when
    they're taught of the Spirit.
  • 4:56 - 4:59
    They know the truth when
God opens their eyes to realize
  • 4:59 - 5:03
    that certain things are true.
  • 5:03 - 5:07
I suspect that God gave us
  • 5:07 - 5:13
    enough difference
  • 5:13 - 5:16
    to test our love.
  • 5:16 - 5:18
    To test our graciousness.
  • 5:18 - 5:22
You know what Jesus Christ said?
  • 5:22 - 5:25
You know, some of the disciples
    came to Him one day
  • 5:25 - 5:30
and said, "Lord, we told these people
    over there to stop."
  • 5:30 - 5:32
    Why?
  • 5:32 - 5:34
    Because they weren't with us.
  • 5:34 - 5:38
    In other words, another denomination.
  • 5:38 - 5:38
    Right?
  • 5:38 - 5:39
    It's just like that.
  • 5:39 - 5:43
They went, Lord, they weren't with us.
  • 5:43 - 5:45
    We're the in group.
    We're the in crowd.
  • 5:45 - 5:47
And see, we tend to think that.
  • 5:47 - 5:49
    Most people think,
  • 5:49 - 5:51
    we've got the truth.
  • 5:51 - 5:53
    Very few others do.
  • 5:53 - 5:56
    And what did Jesus say?
  • 5:56 - 6:01
He said look, if they're not against Me,
  • 6:01 - 6:03
    then what?
  • 6:03 - 6:05
    If they're not against us,
  • 6:05 - 6:08
    they're with us.
  • 6:08 - 6:12
    It is a sad fact
  • 6:12 - 6:17
of those who do bear witness to the truth,
  • 6:17 - 6:19
now that's not to say there's a whole lot,
  • 6:19 - 6:21
    but it's interesting how we
    write certain things up.
  • 6:21 - 6:23
    Can I tell you something?
  • 6:23 - 6:25
    When George Whitefield preached,
  • 6:25 - 6:27
    anybody know what denomination
  • 6:27 - 6:32
    he was affiliated with?
  • 6:32 - 6:37
    Whitefield never sought to start
  • 6:37 - 6:40
    a denomination.
  • 6:40 - 6:42
    He pretty much pledged himself
  • 6:42 - 6:45
    to the Anglican movement
  • 6:45 - 6:46
    Whitefield and Wesley
  • 6:46 - 6:48
    came out of Anglicanism.
  • 6:48 - 6:50
    Now Wesley made definitely
  • 6:50 - 6:52
    more of a concerted effort.
  • 6:52 - 6:54
    And you know we have
    the Wesleyan Methodists,
  • 6:54 - 6:56
    the Arminian Methodists that came
  • 6:56 - 6:59
    more out of Wesley's efforts;
  • 6:59 - 7:01
and then more of the Calvinistic
  • 7:01 - 7:04
    Methodist movement came out of
  • 7:04 - 7:09
those that God raised up in Wales,
  • 7:09 - 7:10
    like the Daniel Roland's,
  • 7:10 - 7:12
    the Howell Harris's.
  • 7:12 - 7:18
And then also the George Whitefield's.
  • 7:18 - 7:25
    You know, Anglicans. Anglicans!
  • 7:25 - 7:28
Do you know that the Baptists
  • 7:28 - 7:30
    would discipline their members
  • 7:30 - 7:36
if they went to hear Whitefield preach?
  • 7:36 - 7:39
I had a man that I highly respect
  • 7:39 - 7:40
tell me he would not allow
  • 7:40 - 7:44
    George Whitefield in his pulpit.
  • 7:44 - 7:48
    Why?
  • 7:48 - 7:49
    You know what?
  • 7:49 - 7:52
    Can I tell you something?
  • 7:52 - 7:56
    In the first and second
    Great Awakenings,
  • 7:56 - 7:58
    the Calvinistic Baptists were
  • 7:58 - 8:01
    largely passed over.
  • 8:01 - 8:02
    It's historical.
  • 8:02 - 8:04
    You can read about it.
  • 8:04 - 8:06
    Why?
  • 8:06 - 8:09
For that very reason right there.
  • 8:09 - 8:10
    They would discipline their members
  • 8:10 - 8:13
if they'd go listen to Whitefield preach.
  • 8:13 - 8:15
The Spirit of God rested upon Whitefield.
  • 8:15 - 8:17
    Multitudes were being converted.
  • 8:17 - 8:19
The Spirit of God rested upon John Wesley,
  • 8:19 - 8:23
as much as a lot of Calvinists
    don't want to admit it.
  • 8:23 - 8:26
    And the Baptist churches
    were disciplining
  • 8:26 - 8:27
    members if they'd go.
  • 8:27 - 8:28
    By and large,
  • 8:28 - 8:31
in the first and second Great Awakenings,
  • 8:31 - 8:34
    the Spirit of God passed
    over the Baptists.
  • 8:34 - 8:36
    Isn't that shameful?
  • 8:36 - 8:40
And you know what's likely to
    happen today?
  • 8:40 - 8:42
If revival breaks out in this land,
  • 8:42 - 8:44
I'm not going to say it might not happen
  • 8:44 - 8:46
    among Calvinistic Bapists,
  • 8:46 - 8:48
but what if it broke out among Lutherans?
  • 8:48 - 8:50
What if it broke out with Methodists?
  • 8:50 - 8:53
    Would we even know?
  • 8:53 - 8:54
What if true revival broke out
  • 8:54 - 8:57
    among the charismatics?
  • 8:57 - 9:00
    Would we even know?
  • 9:00 - 9:03
    I just watched a video -
  • 9:03 - 9:05
just a little part of it last night,
  • 9:05 - 9:10
    like the first five minutes.
  • 9:10 - 9:14
Some guy did a message on
  • 9:14 - 9:16
    charismatic Calvinists.
  • 9:16 - 9:20
    Just bitter and hateful.
  • 9:20 - 9:21
    You can see it.
  • 9:21 - 9:27
It's one of the most popular videos
  • 9:27 - 9:31
    on sermonaudio.com right now.
  • 9:31 - 9:33
You see that kind of thing.
  • 9:33 - 9:35
If revival broke out among charismatics,
  • 9:35 - 9:37
I can tell you that guy
    preaching that message
  • 9:37 - 9:42
    wouldn't even know.
  • 9:42 - 9:44
    Brethren, bottom line,
  • 9:44 - 9:46
if we see something that seems to be
  • 9:46 - 9:47
    a move of God;
  • 9:47 - 9:50
we see something preached out there,
  • 9:50 - 9:51
we need to test the spirits.
  • 9:51 - 9:53
    Not by the denominational label,
  • 9:53 - 9:55
but by "thus sayeth the Lord."
  • 9:55 - 9:57
Go to the Word of God.
  • 9:57 - 9:59
You know what, if they love Christ,
  • 9:59 - 10:01
I think we should be stand,
  • 10:01 - 10:03
I think we should be willing
    to spill our blood for
  • 10:03 - 10:05
    our convictions regarding baptism
  • 10:05 - 10:07
    and the Lord's Supper.
  • 10:07 - 10:11
    We ought to be willing
    to die for our convictions.
  • 10:11 - 10:13
    But the fact is,
  • 10:13 - 10:15
    we'd have to admit,
  • 10:15 - 10:16
    that people have
    had different ideas
  • 10:16 - 10:18
    about the Lord's Supper
  • 10:18 - 10:19
    and about baptism
  • 10:19 - 10:22
    that are in heaven now.
  • 10:22 - 10:23
    And I know there
    are some Baptists
  • 10:23 - 10:27
that don't like to admit that.
  • 10:27 - 10:30
Folks, look, there are a lot
  • 10:30 - 10:32
    of different ideas out there,
  • 10:32 - 10:33
    but I'll tell you this,
  • 10:33 - 10:36
who's the pillar and ground of truth?
  • 10:36 - 10:38
    The church is.
  • 10:38 - 10:39
    And so you know what?
  • 10:39 - 10:41
    Even though there's
    a lot of differences,
  • 10:41 - 10:43
there are good churches out there,
  • 10:43 - 10:44
    and they are
    few and far between,
  • 10:44 - 10:46
    as I've told people lately
  • 10:46 - 10:47
    that I've counseled to,
  • 10:47 - 10:50
and people over the Internet and by phone.
  • 10:50 - 10:54
    Look, I think behind
    any decisions you make
  • 10:54 - 10:57
    about receiving Christ,
  • 10:57 - 11:03
    I think next to choosing
    the right spouse in life,
  • 11:03 - 11:04
    the third most important decision
  • 11:04 - 11:07
    you can make in life
  • 11:07 - 11:10
has to do with what church you go to.
  • 11:10 - 11:12
I believe that you should choose
  • 11:12 - 11:14
where you live, where you work,
  • 11:14 - 11:16
    based on what church
    you're going to go to.
  • 11:16 - 11:18
    Where you're going
    to raise your children,
  • 11:18 - 11:21
based on where a good church is.
  • 11:21 - 11:22
    Because I'll tell you what,
  • 11:22 - 11:24
it will have a lot to do with your life.
  • 11:24 - 11:31
It will have a lot to do
    with your fruitfulness.
  • 11:31 - 11:35
But we need to be testing them.
  • 11:35 - 11:36
    Listen to this,
  • 11:36 - 11:38
you know this - Revelation 2:2
  • 11:38 - 11:41
Jesus said this of the Ephesian church,
  • 11:41 - 11:44
"I know your works; your toil,
    your patient endurance;
  • 11:44 - 11:47
how you cannot bear with those
    who are evil,
  • 11:47 - 11:49
    but have tested..."
    Look at that.
  • 11:49 - 11:52
    "...but have tested those who
    call themselves apostles
  • 11:52 - 11:57
and are not, and found them
    to be false."
  • 11:57 - 11:58
    How do you test?
  • 11:58 - 12:02
How do you test somebody and
    find them to be false?
  • 12:02 - 12:03
I'll tell you what Jesus said
  • 12:03 - 12:05
    about false prophets.
  • 12:05 - 12:08
    You've got false churches;
    you've got bad doctrine.
  • 12:08 - 12:10
    Jesus says this,
  • 12:10 - 12:11
    "Beware of false prophets.
  • 12:11 - 12:12
    They come in sheep's clothing,
  • 12:12 - 12:15
    but inwardly are ravenous wolves."
  • 12:15 - 12:19
How did He say we'll recognize them?
  • 12:19 - 12:21
    By their fruits.
  • 12:21 - 12:22
    I'll tell you this,
  • 12:22 - 12:25
    where you find unholy living,
  • 12:25 - 12:26
    you've got bad doctrine.
  • 12:26 - 12:29
    Guarantee you.
  • 12:29 - 12:31
    You want to know what's
    most important?
  • 12:31 - 12:35
    What are the doctrines that
    are really essential?
  • 12:35 - 12:39
Let me just throw some off the top.
  • 12:39 - 12:44
    Listen, the devil attacks
    primarily in two places:
  • 12:44 - 12:46
    The person of Christ.
  • 12:46 - 12:48
    And the work of Christ.
  • 12:48 - 12:49
    Guarantee it.
  • 12:49 - 12:54
    And it's Christ.
    He is always the issue.
  • 12:54 - 12:56
So you want to look for good doctrine.
  • 12:56 - 12:59
You want to look for good church.
  • 12:59 - 13:01
I don't care what the denomination is.
  • 13:01 - 13:02
You're looking for a church that
  • 13:02 - 13:05
is really a pillar, a ground,
  • 13:05 - 13:06
    a buttress of truth.
  • 13:06 - 13:08
You're going to go in there,
  • 13:08 - 13:10
and you're going to look at
    these two things.
  • 13:10 - 13:12
What do they do with Christ?
    His person?
  • 13:12 - 13:15
What do they do with Christ - His work?
  • 13:15 - 13:20
    Guarantee - the devil
    attacks in both places.
  • 13:20 - 13:22
    You've got false doctrine?
  • 13:22 - 13:24
    What are they doing?
  • 13:24 - 13:25
    Oneness doctrine:
  • 13:25 - 13:28
    The Father is the Son.
  • 13:28 - 13:32
Rejection of the deity - the JW's.
  • 13:32 - 13:34
    He's not God.
  • 13:34 - 13:39
    There will be some rejection
    in His person.
  • 13:39 - 13:42
    The devil always goes after
    the glory of Christ.
  • 13:42 - 13:46
He wants to chop it down somehow.
  • 13:46 - 13:47
    And then the work.
  • 13:47 - 13:49
    What about the work?
  • 13:49 - 13:51
    Anywhere where there's works?
  • 13:51 - 13:54
    Run for your life!
  • 13:54 - 13:56
    Because it's damnable.
  • 13:56 - 13:58
Because the only Gospel that saves,
  • 13:58 - 14:00
is the Gospel that is 100%
  • 14:00 - 14:03
based on the merits of Jesus Christ.
  • 14:03 - 14:07
    That doctrine of justification
    is essential.
  • 14:07 - 14:08
    We are justified by faith
  • 14:08 - 14:11
aside from any works of the law.
  • 14:11 - 14:13
And anytime people want to add to it,
  • 14:13 - 14:16
    whether it's - you've got to be baptized;
  • 14:16 - 14:18
    you've got to speak in tongues;
  • 14:18 - 14:20
    they add anything whatsover,
  • 14:20 - 14:22
no matter how pretty it might sound,
  • 14:22 - 14:23
    if they're adding anything
  • 14:23 - 14:25
to the merits of Jesus Christ,
  • 14:25 - 14:27
run from it like the plague.
  • 14:27 - 14:28
    But I'll tell you this,
  • 14:28 - 14:31
where they make much of Christ,
  • 14:31 - 14:33
and much of the work of Christ,
  • 14:33 - 14:38
    though they may go
    wrong in many things;
  • 14:38 - 14:40
    they're with us.
  • 14:40 - 14:42
    They're with us, folks.
  • 14:42 - 14:45
Where Christ is the sole basis
  • 14:45 - 14:49
    of our acceptance with God.
  • 14:49 - 14:50
Where Christ is made much of,
  • 14:50 - 14:52
    where He's exalted,
  • 14:52 - 14:55
and where what's said of Him
    in the Scriptures
  • 14:55 - 14:57
is said of Him by that church
  • 14:57 - 14:59
    or by that preacher,
  • 14:59 - 15:01
    they may go wrong in things like baptism;
  • 15:01 - 15:04
they may go wrong in things like
    the Lord's Supper;
  • 15:04 - 15:05
    they may go wrong
  • 15:05 - 15:08
and their ecclesiology may be off
  • 15:08 - 15:10
    and they may have problems
  • 15:10 - 15:15
with regards to their cessationist views
  • 15:15 - 15:22
    or non-cessationist or various
    works of the Spirit...
  • 15:22 - 15:35
    Test the spirits, brethren.
