What should a Christian wife do if her husband is lost?

  • 0:12 - 0:17
This is from an anonymous sister in the Lord.
  • 0:17 - 0:19
    She says, "Pastor Tim,
  • 0:19 - 0:21
I've been raised in a Christian home,
  • 0:21 - 0:23
and recently over the past five years,
  • 0:23 - 0:25
    I've experienced tremendous growth
  • 0:25 - 0:27
    in my walk with God.
  • 0:27 - 0:28
    I'm a true believer
  • 0:28 - 0:31
and strive for my life to glorify God.
  • 0:31 - 0:32
On the other side of things,
  • 0:32 - 0:35
    my husband was also raised
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    in a Christian home,
  • 0:37 - 0:38
but he's decided in the past year
  • 0:38 - 0:42
to look into Wicca, the Golden Dawn,
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    Satanism, etc.
  • 0:44 - 0:47
    He's leaning towards Free Masons
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    and the Golden Dawn.
  • 0:49 - 0:54
I've been counseled to leave him by many.
  • 0:54 - 0:57
I do not feel this is what the Holy Spirit
  • 0:57 - 0:59
    is leading me to do,
  • 0:59 - 1:01
but I would appreciate some biblical direction.
  • 1:01 - 1:03
    I have three young children,
  • 1:03 - 1:04
    four and under,
  • 1:04 - 1:06
and I'm doing my best daily
  • 1:06 - 1:08
to teach them to live for Jesus.
  • 1:08 - 1:10
I do struggle with this whole thing
  • 1:10 - 1:12
    very much some days,
  • 1:12 - 1:13
and I just lean on the Lord
  • 1:13 - 1:17
and pray for wisdom in all circumstances.
  • 1:17 - 1:24
Thanks for any help and guidance."
  • 1:24 - 1:27
Well, this is a Christian sister.
  • 1:27 - 1:30
And I would say the same thing that I said last week,
  • 1:30 - 1:34
we had some sensitive issues last week.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
My first counsel to this sister is:
  • 1:37 - 1:39
you've got to be in a good church.
  • 1:39 - 1:43
And you've got to find some good and godly men
  • 1:43 - 1:45
to walk with you through these things
  • 1:45 - 1:47
and pray with you through these things.
  • 1:47 - 1:50
    It's absolutely essential that people
  • 1:50 - 1:52
    are in good churches.
  • 1:52 - 1:56
But, beyond that, I would say this.
  • 1:56 - 1:58
Do you know what the Scripture teaches?
  • 1:58 - 2:01
How many Christians do you have to have
  • 2:01 - 2:06
in a household for it to be a Christian household?
  • 2:06 - 2:09
    One.
  • 2:09 - 2:10
Now, it's very interesting that the text
  • 2:10 - 2:13
    that we would go to
  • 2:13 - 2:18
    to support that truth
  • 2:18 - 2:21
    immediately follows a text
  • 2:21 - 2:24
that actually gives this sister counsel
  • 2:24 - 2:25
    in her area as well.
  • 2:25 - 2:30
Listen to this: 1 Corinthians 7:13
  • 2:30 - 2:32
"If any woman has a husband
  • 2:32 - 2:33
    who is an unbeliever..."
  • 2:33 - 2:38
    Well, that identifies this sister.
  • 2:38 - 2:42
"...and he consents to live with her."
  • 2:42 - 2:45
And that sounds like it's the case.
  • 2:45 - 2:50
    "She should not divorce him."
  • 2:50 - 2:52
    Now listen to this.
  • 2:52 - 2:55
    "For the unbelieving husband
  • 2:55 - 3:02
is made holy because of his wife."
  • 3:02 - 3:04
    You see what's said?
  • 3:04 - 3:05
    The unbelieving husband,
  • 3:05 - 3:07
even if he's a Free Mason,
  • 3:07 - 3:10
even if he's involved in the Golden Dawn,
  • 3:10 - 3:17
is made holy by his marriage to a Christian.
  • 3:17 - 3:19
    What does that mean?
  • 3:19 - 3:24
    Does holy mean righteous there?
  • 3:24 - 3:27
The idea of holy means separate.
  • 3:27 - 3:32
    It means that that husband
  • 3:32 - 3:36
is sanctified by his marriage to
  • 3:36 - 3:38
    that Christian woman.
  • 3:38 - 3:41
And then it goes on to say this:
  • 3:41 - 3:43
"Otherwise your children would be unclean,
  • 3:43 - 3:45
but as it is they are holy."
  • 3:45 - 3:48
    See, a Christian wife makes
  • 3:48 - 3:51
    the whole house sanctified.
  • 3:51 - 3:55
A Christian wife makes the unbelieving husband sanctified.
  • 3:55 - 3:58
    Makes the children sanctified.
  • 3:58 - 4:00
    The household is declared holy,
  • 4:00 - 4:02
    the husband is declared holy,
  • 4:02 - 4:03
    the children are declared holy.
  • 4:03 - 4:07
Now what does that mean practically speaking?
  • 4:07 - 4:09
    Well, in some way,
  • 4:09 - 4:12
    that whole family is sanctified.
  • 4:12 - 4:14
And I believe it probably means this:
  • 4:14 - 4:17
    there's a special protection there.
  • 4:17 - 4:19
I believe that the angels are ministering spirits.
  • 4:19 - 4:22
They're given to minister to God's people.
  • 4:22 - 4:24
If you've got God's people in that house,
  • 4:24 - 4:27
that house is protected by the angels of God.
  • 4:27 - 4:31
It definitely has the light of God's Word in it.
  • 4:31 - 4:33
It definitely has an individual that
  • 4:33 - 4:36
is receiving the blessings of the Lord.
  • 4:36 - 4:39
You know, when you have a Christian in a household,
  • 4:39 - 4:41
there's a blessing of God that falls on that household
  • 4:41 - 4:43
    that wouldn't otherwise be there.
  • 4:43 - 4:46
And in that sense, that whole household is sanctified.
  • 4:46 - 4:48
    And what does it say?
  • 4:48 - 4:49
The instruction to this sister is
  • 4:49 - 4:51
if you've got an unbelieving husband,
  • 4:51 - 4:53
and he's willing to stay with you,
  • 4:53 - 4:54
    don't leave him.
  • 4:54 - 4:56
And it doesn't give any qualifications.
  • 4:56 - 4:58
It doesn't say, well, if he's in Satanism,
  • 4:58 - 4:59
    that's an exception.
  • 4:59 - 5:01
    There's no exceptions.
  • 5:01 - 5:03
If he's willing to dwell with you, dwell there.
  • 5:03 - 5:06
    Now obviously, if situations arise
  • 5:06 - 5:09
where there's physical danger to the family,
  • 5:09 - 5:11
    physical danger to the children,
  • 5:11 - 5:12
    that would be another thing.
  • 5:12 - 5:15
And obviously this sister would need to be
  • 5:15 - 5:17
in close contact with some pastors
  • 5:17 - 5:19
that could guide her through the situation.
  • 5:19 - 5:23
The other thing I would say is this:
  • 5:23 - 5:26
This is a text that comes out of 1 Peter.
  • 5:26 - 5:30
"Wives, be subject to your own husbands."
  • 5:30 - 5:32
So to this sister, I would say,
  • 5:32 - 5:34
    you know what,
  • 5:34 - 5:35
    the Lord calls you,
  • 5:35 - 5:38
    even though he's unbelieving,
  • 5:38 - 5:40
to be subject to your husband.
  • 5:40 - 5:43
Obviously in all the areas that aren't sin.
  • 5:43 - 5:45
If he asks you do to sinful things,
  • 5:45 - 5:47
    attend any kind of meetings
  • 5:47 - 5:49
or get involved in any kind of occultic practices,
  • 5:49 - 5:52
    obviously, you don't go there.
  • 5:52 - 5:54
But in as much as she can honor her husband,
  • 5:54 - 5:56
    reverence her husband,
  • 5:56 - 5:57
    be subject to her husband,
  • 5:57 - 5:58
    she needs to be.
  • 5:58 - 5:59
    Why?
  • 5:59 - 6:02
So that even if some do not obey the Word,
  • 6:02 - 6:05
and he's not obeying the Word,
  • 6:05 - 6:08
they may be won without a word
  • 6:08 - 6:10
by the conduct of their wives.
  • 6:10 - 6:12
So she needs to live in front of her husband
  • 6:12 - 6:14
in such a way as to win him.
  • 6:14 - 6:20
When he sees her respectful and pure conduct.
  • 6:20 - 6:22
Do not let your adorning be external,
  • 6:22 - 6:24
the braiding of hair, the wearing of gold,
  • 6:24 - 6:26
    or putting on of clothing,
  • 6:26 - 6:28
but let your adorning be the hidden
  • 6:28 - 6:30
    person of the heart,
  • 6:30 - 6:32
    with the imperishable beauty
  • 6:32 - 6:33
of a gentle and quiet spirit
  • 6:33 - 6:37
which in God's sight is very precious.
  • 6:37 - 6:39
For this is how the holy women
  • 6:39 - 6:41
who hoped in God used to adorn themselves
  • 6:41 - 6:43
    by submitting to their husbands
  • 6:43 - 6:45
    as Sarah obeyed Abraham
  • 6:45 - 6:47
    calling him lord.
  • 6:47 - 6:49
    Now listen to this:
  • 6:49 - 6:53
    And you are her children
  • 6:53 - 6:55
    if you do good,
  • 6:55 - 6:57
    and listen to this,
  • 6:57 - 6:59
    and do not fear anything
  • 6:59 - 7:01
    that is frightening.
  • 7:01 - 7:03
    Isn't that an amazing thing
  • 7:03 - 7:04
    that he would say that.
  • 7:04 - 7:08
Don't fear anything that is frightening.
  • 7:08 - 7:10
You know what I would say to this sister?
  • 7:10 - 7:14
Peter is calling her to live virtuously,
  • 7:14 - 7:17
to live in such a way
  • 7:17 - 7:20
    that she is respectful,
  • 7:20 - 7:23
    she is pure,
  • 7:23 - 7:27
    but also not afraid.
  • 7:27 - 7:29
    Why?
  • 7:29 - 7:31
    It's a call to faith.
  • 7:31 - 7:32
    Trust the Lord.
  • 7:32 - 7:34
    Don't be frightened by
  • 7:34 - 7:36
any of your husband's occultic practices.
  • 7:36 - 7:38
Because He that's with you is stronger
  • 7:38 - 7:41
than he that's with your husband.
  • 7:41 - 7:42
    And your husband's sanctified.
  • 7:42 - 7:44
    And your home is sanctified.
  • 7:44 - 7:45
    Trust the Lord.
  • 7:45 - 7:50
Don't be frightened by anything that's frightening.
  • 7:50 - 7:53
    Don't fear anything frightening.
  • 7:53 - 7:55
    Live trusting the Lord.
  • 7:55 - 7:58
    Live godly before your husband.
  • 7:58 - 8:00
    Don't involve yourself.
  • 8:00 - 8:03
Don't participate in his occultic practices.
  • 8:03 - 8:07
But the Scripture would say stay with him.
  • 8:07 - 8:09
    Live righteously before him.
  • 8:09 - 8:10
And it might even be that God
  • 8:10 - 8:13
will allow you to win your husband.
  • 8:13 - 8:18
That seems to be the biblical counsel in the matter.
