Is It Ok to Have a Beer With My Friends So I Can "Evangelize" to Them? - Bob & Tim

  • 0:00 - 0:04
To be "all things to all men,"
  • 0:04 - 0:06
and I guess in light of some stuff
  • 0:06 - 0:08
that he happens to be a person
  • 0:08 - 0:10
    that pushes some extremes,
  • 0:10 - 0:12
    it seems that something
    that's becoming big now
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    is the whole "pub theology,"
  • 0:14 - 0:16
going to bars and having Bible studies.
  • 0:16 - 0:18
    And my personal stance
  • 0:18 - 0:19
    based on the Scriptures
  • 0:19 - 0:22
is in opposition to stuff like that,
  • 0:22 - 0:25
and I have a buddy that I work with
  • 0:25 - 0:27
that he's the only other "Christian"
  • 0:27 - 0:28
    in my workplace
  • 0:28 - 0:31
    in a largely unbelieving workplace.
  • 0:31 - 0:34
    And he is constantly pushing,
  • 0:34 - 0:36
    promoting that kind of lifestyle
  • 0:36 - 0:38
    to reach people,
  • 0:38 - 0:40
and then I'm the overly dogmatic person
  • 0:40 - 0:43
    because I don't understand it -
  • 0:43 - 0:45
why you would go into the bars
  • 0:45 - 0:47
    to actually drink with everybody
  • 0:47 - 0:48
and have a Bible study doing it
  • 0:48 - 0:49
    to reach people.
  • 0:49 - 0:52
    So I understand the
    "all things to all men"
  • 0:52 - 0:56
    and I guess wisdom, insight?
  • 0:56 - 1:01
Am I pushing on the lines of legalism?
  • 1:01 - 1:06
Or is stuff like that too far?
  • 1:06 - 1:09
Going into bars, having Bible study there?
  • 1:09 - 1:11
You know, to try and reach people.
  • 1:11 - 1:12
The "being all things" where people
  • 1:12 - 1:13
    are going to use that.
  • 1:13 - 1:15
    Bob: Here's an illustration
  • 1:15 - 1:22
that I saw in my own
    life that I never forgot.
  • 1:22 - 1:26
    Between my junior and
    senior year in college,
  • 1:26 - 1:27
I had a summer intern job
  • 1:27 - 1:29
    in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
  • 1:29 - 1:33
    And there were three
    or four others with me
  • 1:33 - 1:35
and we all lived in this apartment house.
  • 1:35 - 1:38
    And there was another
    fellow living there.
  • 1:38 - 1:42
    He was a policeman about
    10 years older than me.
  • 1:42 - 1:46
    So, we would go downtown
  • 1:46 - 1:52
    about every evening.
  • 1:52 - 1:57
And then, the next year, I was converted.
  • 1:57 - 2:00
And this company that I was working for
  • 2:00 - 2:03
    had a regional meeting
    back up in Fort Dodge.
  • 2:03 - 2:04
    So I thought to myself,
  • 2:04 - 2:06
I'm going to go look up Herb
  • 2:06 - 2:09
and tell him that I've become a Christian.
  • 2:09 - 2:11
So, I didn't find him at the house,
  • 2:11 - 2:14
and I thought maybe he's downtown
  • 2:14 - 2:15
    at the old Cave In.
  • 2:15 - 2:18
And so sure enough, there was Herb
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    sitting at the bar.
  • 2:20 - 2:23
And he was quite surprised to see me
  • 2:23 - 2:26
and he says, "Bob! Have a chair."
  • 2:26 - 2:29
    "Have a drink with me."
  • 2:29 - 2:31
And I said, "No thanks, Herb,
  • 2:31 - 2:33
    I've become a Christian."
  • 2:33 - 2:34
    "What?"
  • 2:34 - 2:37
    And so we talked awhile
  • 2:37 - 2:38
    and he urged me again,
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    "Have a beer with me."
  • 2:40 - 2:41
    And I said no.
  • 2:41 - 2:42
    And he went on.
  • 2:42 - 2:45
"You're telling me you can't just sit here
  • 2:45 - 2:46
and have a beer with me?
  • 2:46 - 2:48
Who do you think you are?"
  • 2:48 - 2:49
And he put the pressure on,
  • 2:49 - 2:51
and after about four or five times,
  • 2:51 - 2:53
    I said, "Okay."
  • 2:53 - 2:56
And I had that glass of beer,
  • 2:56 - 2:59
and just as I got it to my lips,
  • 2:59 - 3:02
    he said, "Look at that!
    I knew it wasn't real!"
  • 3:02 - 3:05
And it was just like a knife.
  • 3:05 - 3:07
So, you know, I think one big thing
  • 3:07 - 3:13
is are we going to where they're at
  • 3:13 - 3:16
with the atmosphere and the attitude
  • 3:16 - 3:18
    of bringing them out?
  • 3:18 - 3:19
    Or identifying with them
  • 3:19 - 3:22
and confirming them in their sin
  • 3:22 - 3:29
    in whatever circumstance it is?
  • 3:29 - 3:31
    Tim: Just adding to that,
  • 3:31 - 3:35
    you know, in every situation,
  • 3:35 - 3:37
    we're representatives of Christ,
  • 3:37 - 3:39
and we need to portray Him.
  • 3:39 - 3:41
And you know, when I talked about
  • 3:41 - 3:42
    just breaking the taboos,
  • 3:42 - 3:45
    you think about how Jesus
  • 3:45 - 3:48
    related with people versus
    the religious leaders.
  • 3:48 - 3:50
Think about the things He did.
  • 3:50 - 3:53
    He touched lepers.
  • 3:53 - 3:55
You didn't even get downwind from a leper.
  • 3:55 - 3:57
    You didn't walk around them.
  • 3:57 - 3:59
    He would stop and speak
  • 3:59 - 4:03
with a woman at a well.
  • 4:03 - 4:06
    He would speak with the
    Syro-Pheonician woman.
  • 4:06 - 4:08
He did things, but it was always
  • 4:08 - 4:09
    to show kindness.
  • 4:09 - 4:12
    It was always as Bob
    said to bring them out.
  • 4:12 - 4:16
    And you know,
  • 4:16 - 4:19
I personally, I like the guy
  • 4:19 - 4:21
    that does the unusual thing.
  • 4:21 - 4:22
    I like that.
  • 4:22 - 4:25
    I like when people are
    testing the boundaries,
  • 4:25 - 4:27
    but behind it you see
    that they're testing it
  • 4:27 - 4:30
    because they really do
    have a burden for souls.
  • 4:30 - 4:34
And they really have a desire for purity.
  • 4:34 - 4:36
    They're not trying to be
    as much like the world
  • 4:36 - 4:38
    as they possibly can.
  • 4:38 - 4:40
They have a burden for souls,
  • 4:40 - 4:42
    and they're willing to
    think outside the box.
  • 4:42 - 4:44
    I love people like that.
