Children: Jesus is the Anchor of the Soul - Tim Conway

  • 0:02 - 0:10
    Ok, children.
  • 0:10 - 0:15
    What have we got here?
  • 0:15 - 0:16
    We've got a rock.
  • 0:16 - 0:22
    And we've got an anchor.
  • 0:22 - 0:29
We've been talking about the fact
  • 0:29 - 0:34
that God is an anchor for the soul.
  • 0:34 - 0:35
    We talked about yesterday
  • 0:35 - 0:39
    that His promises are
    an anchor for the soul.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
We put a promise up there on that pole.
  • 0:42 - 0:45
That pole's been helping us, hasn't it?
  • 0:45 - 0:49
    Because that pole's pretty solid.
  • 0:49 - 0:52
    The Bible talks about
  • 0:52 - 0:54
    the anchor of the soul.
  • 0:54 - 0:56
    Anybody know where it does?
  • 0:56 - 0:59
    Where?
  • 0:59 - 1:08
Where in the Bible does it say anchor?
  • 1:08 - 1:12
    Hebrews 6.
  • 1:12 - 1:14
Anybody know someplace in the Bible
  • 1:14 - 1:22
where it speaks about a rock?
  • 1:22 - 1:27
Anybody know something that's like a rock?
  • 1:27 - 1:33
Jesus Christ is called a rock.
  • 1:33 - 1:36
    We've got an anchor.
  • 1:36 - 1:38
The Bible talks about an anchor.
  • 1:38 - 1:39
    We've got a rock.
  • 1:39 - 1:40
The Bible talks about a rock.
  • 1:40 - 1:46
But let me ask you something.
  • 1:46 - 1:52
    What's the greatest
    emblem of Christianity?
  • 1:52 - 1:53
    It's not an anchor.
  • 1:53 - 1:58
    It's not a rock.
  • 1:58 - 2:00
    Well, I said emblem.
  • 2:00 - 2:06
Like, a symbol or a sign.
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    The cross.
  • 2:08 - 2:15
We've got a cross over here.
  • 2:15 - 2:18
This is Mr. Seth's homemade cross
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    from a walking stick.
  • 2:20 - 2:24
Some of you saw this today.
  • 2:24 - 2:26
    This is a brick.
  • 2:26 - 2:28
    The Bible probably says
    something about bricks too,
  • 2:28 - 2:32
but I'm going to leave that out right now.
  • 2:32 - 2:36
    Our rock, I'm hoping,
  • 2:36 - 2:48
is going to hold our cross.
  • 2:48 - 2:52
The actual cross was a lot bigger,
  • 2:52 - 2:58
because they put a Man on that cross.
  • 2:58 - 3:03
What does that say to us?
  • 3:03 - 3:04
What does it say to us?
  • 3:04 - 3:08
(from the room:) God died on the cross?
  • 3:08 - 3:12
    Tim: God can't die.
  • 3:12 - 3:14
    Sometimes children say that:
  • 3:14 - 3:16
    "God died on the cross."
  • 3:16 - 3:18
God didn't die on the cross.
  • 3:18 - 3:21
    God cannot die.
  • 3:21 - 3:23
    Only man can die -
  • 3:23 - 3:24
    well, animals can die too,
  • 3:24 - 3:28
    but man dies.
  • 3:28 - 3:31
There was a Man on that cross.
  • 3:31 - 3:34
Who's got the lights at their disposal?
  • 3:34 - 3:38
    Kevin, could you turn
    all those lights off?
  • 3:38 - 3:47
Except for maybe the last one.
  • 3:47 - 3:52
You know why I want that to happen?
  • 3:52 - 3:54
    Something happened that
    some of you might know
  • 3:54 - 4:00
and some of you might not know.
  • 4:00 - 4:04
    Roman soldiers nailed Jesus Christ
  • 4:04 - 4:06
    to the cross.
  • 4:06 - 4:09
    They drove spikes through
His hands and through His feet.
  • 4:09 - 4:12
They hung Him on a cross
  • 4:12 - 4:15
    next to two thieves.
  • 4:15 - 4:16
    He was in the middle.
  • 4:16 - 4:18
There was one on His right hand
  • 4:18 - 4:20
and one on His left hand.
  • 4:20 - 4:22
Can I tell you something that happened
  • 4:22 - 4:23
while He was on that cross?
  • 4:23 - 4:30
    Anybody know how long
    He was on that cross?
  • 4:30 - 4:35
He was there for six hours.
  • 4:35 - 4:45
    Six hours on the cross.
  • 4:45 - 4:47
    Something that happened -
  • 4:47 - 4:50
I had them turn the lights out
  • 4:50 - 4:54
    because when Jesus was
    hanging on the cross,
  • 4:54 - 4:58
that hot bright sun out there -
  • 4:58 - 5:00
    the same sun -
  • 5:00 - 5:04
    that same sun that shines
    in our sky right now,
  • 5:04 - 5:12
that sun went black at noon
  • 5:12 - 5:13
in the middle of the day
  • 5:13 - 5:17
when the sun is straight up in the sky.
  • 5:17 - 5:20
    The sun went out.
  • 5:20 - 5:24
I don't mean it got covered by clouds.
  • 5:24 - 5:27
    It went out.
  • 5:27 - 5:31
God caused the sun to go black
  • 5:31 - 5:34
in the middle of the day
  • 5:34 - 5:39
when Jesus hung on that cross.
  • 5:39 - 5:42
    Darkness.
  • 5:42 - 5:47
    Do you know what was
    happening on that cross?
  • 5:47 - 5:49
    In that blackness,
  • 5:49 - 5:50
    in that darkness,
  • 5:50 - 5:52
    Jesus hung on that cross.
  • 5:52 - 5:54
And if you go to your Old Testaments,
  • 5:54 - 5:56
and you listen to the prophet Isaiah,
  • 5:56 - 5:58
do you know what it says?
  • 5:58 - 6:02
It says that God smashed Him.
  • 6:02 - 6:05
    Crushed Him.
  • 6:05 - 6:07
    Did you know that?
  • 6:07 - 6:10
    Did you know that God
  • 6:10 - 6:14
    crushed His own Son
  • 6:14 - 6:17
when He was on that cross?
  • 6:17 - 6:19
    Did you know that?
  • 6:19 - 6:23
The Bible says that He crushed Him.
  • 6:23 - 6:25
    He was stricken.
  • 6:25 - 6:26
    That's to hit.
  • 6:26 - 6:27
    Smitten.
  • 6:27 - 6:33
    He was afflicted.
  • 6:33 - 6:39
    It's not funny.
  • 6:39 - 6:41
    Why?
  • 6:41 - 6:43
    This is God's Son.
  • 6:43 - 6:47
Let me tell you what happened.
  • 6:47 - 6:49
    God is a Trinity.
  • 6:49 - 6:51
    There is God the Father,
  • 6:51 - 6:53
and there is God the Son,
  • 6:53 - 6:55
and there is God the Holy Spirit.
  • 6:55 - 7:00
And the three are one Being,
  • 7:00 - 7:02
    but three Persons.
  • 7:02 - 7:04
Very difficult for us to know exactly
  • 7:04 - 7:08
how that can be, but it is.
  • 7:08 - 7:10
    That's what the Bible teaches.
  • 7:10 - 7:11
And do you know what happened?
  • 7:11 - 7:16
God the Father sent God the Son
  • 7:16 - 7:19
    from the halls of Heaven;
  • 7:19 - 7:21
    from His throne,
  • 7:21 - 7:22
    from His glory,
  • 7:22 - 7:24
    from His eternal
    happiness with the Father.
  • 7:24 - 7:28
And He sent His Son into this world.
  • 7:28 - 7:32
    God became man.
  • 7:32 - 7:35
God the Son came into this world.
  • 7:35 - 7:40
    You know, Jesus Christ lived
  • 7:40 - 7:44
    before He came here.
  • 7:44 - 7:45
    He was the Word.
  • 7:45 - 7:49
In the beginning, the Word was with God.
  • 7:49 - 7:51
    And He came here,
  • 7:51 - 7:52
    and He became a man,
  • 7:52 - 7:55
    just like us,
  • 7:55 - 7:57
    in every respect,
  • 7:57 - 7:58
    just like us.
  • 7:58 - 8:02
    Except He never sinned.
  • 8:02 - 8:04
    But His Father crushed Him.
  • 8:04 - 8:06
    His Father punished Him.
  • 8:06 - 8:09
His Father punished Him for sin
  • 8:09 - 8:13
even though He never commited any sins.
  • 8:13 - 8:14
    And the sun went out.
  • 8:14 - 8:18
    The sun was black
  • 8:18 - 8:22
because God had forsaken His Son.
  • 8:22 - 8:25
    God crushed Him.
  • 8:25 - 8:28
    You know what God did?
  • 8:28 - 8:31
While He was on that cross,
  • 8:31 - 8:39
God laid our sin on Him.
  • 8:39 - 8:41
    And He became sin.
  • 8:41 - 8:45
Christ became sin on that cross.
  • 8:45 - 8:48
    And because He became sin,
  • 8:48 - 8:57
God punished Him for the sins of others.
  • 8:57 - 9:01
We've talked about God being an anchor.
  • 9:01 - 9:05
    We've talked about His
    promises being an anchor.
  • 9:05 - 9:07
    I want to tell you,
  • 9:07 - 9:10
    we talked about the anchor.
  • 9:10 - 9:12
    The anchor's no good as
    long as it slides around.
  • 9:12 - 9:13
    It doesn't hold.
  • 9:13 - 9:16
    You've got to have it
    grab hold of something.
  • 9:16 - 9:18
I'll tell you what you want your anchor
  • 9:18 - 9:19
    to grab hold of:
  • 9:19 - 9:21
    this right here.
  • 9:21 - 9:26
    The cross is only wood.
  • 9:26 - 9:29
The cross is only an emblem.
  • 9:29 - 9:31
    But like you said, Christ.
  • 9:31 - 9:33
    Christ.
  • 9:33 - 9:36
It's the One Who hung on the cross.
  • 9:36 - 9:37
    He's not there.
  • 9:37 - 9:38
    He's here.
  • 9:38 - 9:42
    He's in our midst.
  • 9:42 - 9:44
There's no Christ on this cross.
  • 9:44 - 9:45
    This is only a picture
  • 9:45 - 9:46
    so that you can imagine
  • 9:46 - 9:48
what it was like in that day.
  • 9:48 - 9:52
    But Jesus Christ -
  • 9:52 - 9:55
He hung there in the darkness.
  • 9:55 - 9:58
    The sun did not shine.
  • 9:58 - 10:00
    He hung on that cross
  • 10:00 - 10:04
between the ground and the sky.
  • 10:04 - 10:08
    Hanging on a cross.
  • 10:08 - 10:11
    And you know what?
  • 10:11 - 10:16
    While God crushed Him
  • 10:16 - 10:21
    for three hours
  • 10:21 - 10:26
He was silent except for one thing.
  • 10:26 - 10:28
    He was silent.
  • 10:28 - 10:30
    He suffered in silence.
  • 10:30 - 10:32
    Do you know something?
  • 10:32 - 10:34
    Many of you've got
    spankings from your parents.
  • 10:34 - 10:36
    You don't suffer in silence.
  • 10:36 - 10:41
    You probably scream. You cry.
  • 10:41 - 10:43
    Jesus was suffering.
  • 10:43 - 10:47
    He was suffering more than
    anyone else ever suffered.
  • 10:47 - 10:50
    And He didn't say anything.
  • 10:50 - 10:51
    He was quiet.
  • 10:51 - 10:57
    Except, He said these words:
  • 10:57 - 11:01
My God, My God! Why have You forsaken Me?
  • 11:01 - 11:04
What does it mean to forsake?
  • 11:04 - 11:08
    If somebody forsakes you,
  • 11:08 - 11:10
it means they let you go.
  • 11:10 - 11:12
    They leave you.
  • 11:12 - 11:18
    They don't help you anymore.
  • 11:18 - 11:21
God didn't help His Son anymore.
  • 11:21 - 11:24
    God turned on His Son.
  • 11:24 - 11:26
    God punished His Son.
  • 11:26 - 11:27
    Do you know why?
  • 11:27 - 11:29
    Because He became sin.
  • 11:29 - 11:31
    And the sun was dark.
  • 11:31 - 11:33
    And in the darkness,
  • 11:33 - 11:36
do you know what He did?
  • 11:36 - 11:40
    He paid the penalty.
  • 11:40 - 11:42
    So that, when He was done;
  • 11:42 - 11:43
when the six hours were over.
  • 11:43 - 11:48
The three hours of darkness were over.
  • 11:48 - 11:52
    Jesus said, "It is finished."
  • 11:52 - 11:56
He paid the price for sin.
  • 11:56 - 11:59
Children, let me tell you something.
  • 11:59 - 12:04
Your life - you're alive right now.
  • 12:04 - 12:06
    You've been playing;
    you've been eating today.
  • 12:06 - 12:08
Can I tell you something about this life?
  • 12:08 - 12:11
The primary purpose for this life
  • 12:11 - 12:14
is it's the period of time
    God has given you
  • 12:14 - 12:17
to trust His Son and what
His Son did on that cross.
  • 12:17 - 12:19
    This life is not mainly
    about getting married.
  • 12:19 - 12:22
    This life is not mainly
    about making money.
  • 12:22 - 12:25
This life is not mainly about eating candy
  • 12:25 - 12:26
    and watching movies.
  • 12:26 - 12:29
This life is not about sports.
  • 12:29 - 12:33
It's not about getting new shoes.
  • 12:33 - 12:37
This life is the only one you've got.
  • 12:37 - 12:40
    It's the only opportunity, children,
  • 12:40 - 12:42
    that you have
  • 12:42 - 12:46
to believe upon the Lord Jesus Christ
  • 12:46 - 12:48
and to trust - to have your anchor
  • 12:48 - 12:50
    set fast on the cross.
  • 12:50 - 12:53
    That's a solid place.
  • 12:53 - 12:56
    Only in this life.
  • 12:56 - 13:00
And if you pass through this life,
  • 13:00 - 13:02
    and you don't trust Him,
  • 13:02 - 13:03
    your chance is over.
  • 13:03 - 13:05
    Because I'll tell you,
  • 13:05 - 13:07
God punished His Son on that cross
  • 13:07 - 13:08
    for sin.
  • 13:08 - 13:10
    Sin that wasn't His own.
  • 13:10 - 13:13
It was the sin of others.
  • 13:13 - 13:14
And if you don't trust Him
  • 13:14 - 13:15
    to suffer in your place,
  • 13:15 - 13:19
to be a sacrifice for you,
  • 13:19 - 13:22
    then when you die,
  • 13:22 - 13:27
you will have to suffer for your own sins.
  • 13:27 - 13:29
    Children, this is it.
  • 13:29 - 13:33
This life is the allotted time
  • 13:33 - 13:36
that you have to trust Christ.
  • 13:36 - 13:39
    This is all you have.
  • 13:39 - 13:44
    Children, lots of children die
  • 13:44 - 13:47
    before they become adults.
  • 13:47 - 13:49
    You know the guy that
    ran over all the people
  • 13:49 - 13:50
    over there in France?
  • 13:50 - 13:53
Did any of you see it?
  • 13:53 - 13:56
Did you know that a young man
  • 13:56 - 14:01
from Austin, Texas got run over?
  • 14:01 - 14:06
And he was no older than
    some of you guys here.
  • 14:06 - 14:08
Gone. Did he think he'd be
  • 14:08 - 14:10
    in eternity by now?
  • 14:10 - 14:11
    He didn't think so.
  • 14:11 - 14:12
Don't think you'll live to be
  • 14:12 - 14:14
an old man or an old woman.
  • 14:14 - 14:15
    You might not.
  • 14:15 - 14:16
    You might.
  • 14:16 - 14:18
God might allow that to happen.
  • 14:18 - 14:20
    But you have no guarantee.
  • 14:20 - 14:23
You have no guarantee of tomorrow.
  • 14:23 - 14:25
    Don't waste time.
  • 14:25 - 14:26
    Don't waste time.
  • 14:26 - 14:30
    Children, you're not so young
  • 14:30 - 14:31
that you can't call on the Lord.
  • 14:31 - 14:34
    Like we talked about yesterday.
  • 14:34 - 14:36
    I was telling you yesterday,
  • 14:36 - 14:37
    cry out to the Lord.
  • 14:37 - 14:38
    And I was telling you
  • 14:38 - 14:40
    trust Him for everything.
  • 14:40 - 14:41
But you know what the primary thing is
  • 14:41 - 14:43
you need to trust Him for?
  • 14:43 - 14:44
Not to give you food on your table.
  • 14:44 - 14:47
Not to give you a bed to sleep on tonight.
  • 14:47 - 14:51
But to give you forgiveness for your sins.
  • 14:51 - 14:58
    Children, Jesus Christ -
  • 14:58 - 14:59
    listen to me.
  • 14:59 - 15:04
This is the last thing I
    want to say to you.
  • 15:04 - 15:09
You do not want to die
  • 15:09 - 15:13
and be punished for your sin
  • 15:13 - 15:17
when God provided you with a Savior.
  • 15:17 - 15:19
    Can you imagine?
  • 15:19 - 15:23
    Can you imagine
    waking up in hell, children,
  • 15:23 - 15:30
    and knowing that you had
    a Savior provided for you
  • 15:30 - 15:32
    and you didn't want it.
  • 15:32 - 15:34
    You didn't want Him.
  • 15:34 - 15:36
    And way back there in
    Vacation Bible School -
  • 15:36 - 15:38
let me tell you, I know,
  • 15:38 - 15:40
    some of you children,
  • 15:40 - 15:45
    your parents don't take
you to church all the time.
  • 15:45 - 15:50
You may not hear about Christ again.
  • 15:50 - 15:53
    Don't let any time go.
  • 15:53 - 15:54
    You trust Him.
  • 15:54 - 15:56
You say how do you do that?
  • 15:56 - 15:58
    Confess your sins to Him
  • 15:58 - 16:00
and ask Him to save you.
  • 16:00 - 16:02
Ask Him to save you from the penalty
  • 16:02 - 16:04
    that your sins deserve.
  • 16:04 - 16:06
Ask Him to show you mercy.
  • 16:06 - 16:08
    Ask Him to forgive you.
  • 16:08 - 16:11
    Confess your sins.
  • 16:11 - 16:14
    And children, you have sins.
  • 16:14 - 16:16
The Bible says that we're born liars.
  • 16:16 - 16:18
    And you know it's true.
  • 16:18 - 16:20
    Children, you know you've lied.
  • 16:20 - 16:22
And you know what God says?
  • 16:22 - 16:25
Liars have their part in the lake of fire.
  • 16:25 - 16:29
How can liars like all of us be saved?
  • 16:29 - 16:30
    Because of what Jesus Christ
  • 16:30 - 16:32
    did on that cross.
  • 16:32 - 16:35
    You want to plant your
    anchor on something solid?
  • 16:35 - 16:37
Don't let it slide all around in life.
  • 16:37 - 16:40
    Plant it here.
  • 16:40 - 16:44
What Jesus Christ did on that cross -
  • 16:44 - 16:45
    this may seem foolish.
  • 16:45 - 16:46
    The Bible says so.
  • 16:46 - 16:49
Paul talks that way - the Apostle Paul.
  • 16:49 - 16:52
    He speaks about the foolishness.
  • 16:52 - 16:55
The world thinks this is foolish.
  • 16:55 - 16:57
    But it's not foolish.
  • 16:57 - 17:01
It's the greatest wisdom of all,
  • 17:01 - 17:04
    that you'd believe on
    the Lord Jesus Christ
  • 17:04 - 17:06
and you trust what He did
  • 17:06 - 17:10
in giving His life 2,000 years ago.
  • 17:10 - 17:13
    And listen to those last
    words that He said,
  • 17:13 - 17:17
before He gave up [His spirit.]
  • 17:17 - 17:19
    He said, "It is finished."
  • 17:19 - 17:21
    And He committed His spirit
  • 17:21 - 17:22
    into His Father's hands.
  • 17:22 - 17:24
What does that mean "it's finished"?
  • 17:24 - 17:27
    It means He did everything
  • 17:27 - 17:30
    that God requires of you.
  • 17:30 - 17:34
    He did everything
  • 17:34 - 17:37
so that you don't have to work out
  • 17:37 - 17:40
    how to save yourself.
  • 17:40 - 17:43
He did everything to save you.
  • 17:43 - 17:44
    Everything.
  • 17:44 - 17:45
And you know what He does now?
  • 17:45 - 17:49
He offers it to you as a gift.
  • 17:49 - 17:51
If you say, "I want that,"
  • 17:51 - 17:52
    You can talk to Him.
  • 17:52 - 17:55
He's close to every one of us.
  • 17:55 - 17:57
    He's here.
  • 17:57 - 17:59
He can hear you if you talk to Him.
  • 17:59 - 18:01
Like that - bowing down and praying.
  • 18:01 - 18:04
You don't have to speak out loud.
  • 18:04 - 18:06
Even if you just think it in your mind,
  • 18:06 - 18:07
    He knows.
  • 18:07 - 18:09
    We have a great God.
  • 18:09 - 18:11
    He can hear every thought.
  • 18:11 - 18:14
    He knows.
  • 18:14 - 18:17
Ask Him to show you mercy.
  • 18:17 - 18:18
    You need mercy.
  • 18:18 - 18:21
    I know you're children.
  • 18:21 - 18:22
You don't have a big, long record
  • 18:22 - 18:24
like some of us adults here,
  • 18:24 - 18:26
    but still,
  • 18:26 - 18:29
    you've got enough bad -
  • 18:29 - 18:31
you've got a lot of bad.
  • 18:31 - 18:33
You fight with your brothers and sisters.
  • 18:33 - 18:36
    That's bad.
  • 18:36 - 18:38
    You lie. That's bad.
  • 18:38 - 18:40
    Some of you have stolen.
  • 18:40 - 18:41
    That's bad.
  • 18:41 - 18:44
Some of you have dishonored your mom,
  • 18:44 - 18:45
    dishonored your father.
  • 18:45 - 18:46
    That's bad.
  • 18:46 - 18:48
    This is really bad.
  • 18:48 - 18:50
    And it's sin.
  • 18:50 - 18:53
And the wage of sin is death.
  • 18:53 - 18:56
The wage of sin is hell.
  • 18:56 - 18:59
And Jesus came and died on the cross
  • 18:59 - 19:04
so that you don't have to suffer hell.
  • 19:04 - 19:07
    And if you go there,
  • 19:07 - 19:12
it will be because you denied and rejected
  • 19:12 - 19:16
what Christ did on the cross.
  • 19:16 - 19:19
Because He offers you a way of escape.
  • 19:19 - 19:23
    That's where you want
    to plant your anchor.
  • 19:23 - 19:25
    Twenty-six years ago
  • 19:25 - 19:28
that's where I planted my anchor.
  • 19:28 - 19:31
And I'll tell you this, it's held fast.
  • 19:31 - 19:35
And it will never let me go.
  • 19:35 - 19:38
    Let's pray.
  • 19:38 - 19:40
    Father, I pray again,
  • 19:40 - 19:42
    Lord, I pray the same,
  • 19:42 - 19:45
Lord, may the scales fall off the eyes
  • 19:45 - 19:47
    of the children.
  • 19:47 - 19:49
Lord, You are the God Who says,
  • 19:49 - 19:50
    "Let there be light."
  • 19:50 - 19:52
You are the God Who can reveal
  • 19:52 - 19:57
    the glory of Yourself in
    the face of Jesus Christ.
  • 19:57 - 19:59
You can cause the scales to fall off
  • 19:59 - 20:00
    the eyes of the children,
  • 20:00 - 20:02
and even at their young ages,
  • 20:02 - 20:04
    to behold wonder and glory,
  • 20:04 - 20:13
    to behold a great Savior,
  • 20:13 - 20:15
    and to trust Him.
  • 20:15 - 20:17
Lord, have mercy upon our children,
  • 20:17 - 20:18
    I pray in Christ's name.
  • 20:18 - 20:20
    Amen.
