Computational Thinking - unplugged activity

    Unplugged Activity | Computational Thinking
  • 0:08 - 0:10
    (Katie Apone - Code.org)
    The lesson on computational thinking
  • 0:10 - 0:14
is intended to teach you how to take a big, difficult problem,
  • 0:14 - 0:17
and break it down into several simpler problems.
  • 0:17 - 0:21
The goal in this lesson is to write a set of instructions
  • 0:21 - 0:23
that someone can follow to draw one of the monsters
  • 0:23 - 0:25
    included in this lesson plan.
  • 0:25 - 0:29
Students will break into groups to write instructions
  • 0:29 - 0:30
and then will switch them with another group
  • 0:30 - 0:32
that will have to draw the monster.
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    Groups will write instructions
  • 0:34 - 0:37
using the four steps of computational thinking:
  • 0:37 - 0:38
    decomposition
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    pattern location
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    abstraction
  • 0:42 - 0:43
    algorithms
  • 0:43 - 0:46
First, groups will decompose the task,
  • 0:46 - 0:48
which means make a game plan.
  • 0:48 - 0:53
Then they'll look for patterns between all the monsters in the catalog.
  • 0:53 - 0:56
When they come across differences between the monsters
  • 0:56 - 1:00
they'll abstract out, or remove, those details.
  • 1:00 - 1:04
For instance, one monster in the catalog has vegitas eyes
  • 1:04 - 1:07
    and another has spritem eyes,
  • 1:07 - 1:08
    but they both have eyes.
  • 1:08 - 1:13
So we can write a line that says, "This monster has _blank_ eyes."
  • 1:13 - 1:16
So students will be able to write a set of instructions,
  • 1:16 - 1:20
called an algorithm, that lists the monster's parts
  • 1:20 - 1:22
with blanks for what the style should be.
  • 1:22 - 1:25
This is the set of instructions they'll pass to
  • 1:25 - 1:28
other students to recreate their very own monster.
