Mountain of Stories - a digital story by Nazbah Tom

  • 0:03 - 0:07
    [* SINGING...*]
  • 0:23 - 0:27
[* SINGING gradually quietens as the story begins...*]
  • 0:27 - 0:30
As I write my coming out letter to my mother
  • 0:30 - 0:36
I look out from the window of my dorm room
    and see Mount Hesperus.
  • 0:36 - 0:40
I ask the mountain for strength
    to send this story.
  • 0:40 - 0:43
    I send the letter.
  • 0:43 - 0:47
    Three months go by
without a word from my mother.
  • 0:47 - 0:55
An elder tells me "*give your mother the same amount of time you gave yourself to accept who you are*".
  • 0:55 - 1:03
My mother and I end up having to drive to Paige to run errands
when I come home on break from college.
  • 1:03 - 1:07
This is a familiar drive for the both of us.
  • 1:07 - 1:11
Usually she is full of stories along this stretch of road.
  • 1:11 - 1:14
    This drive is silent.
  • 1:14 - 1:19
I escape into my head to get away from the void between us.
  • 1:19 - 1:23
    My thoughts fill with stories
of mountains moving and talking to each other,
  • 1:23 - 1:26
    skinwalkers running alongside the road,
  • 1:26 - 1:29
or that dangerous curve that took someone's life.
  • 1:31 - 1:34
My mother clears her throat and I look over.
  • 1:36 - 1:39
Suddenly her voice breaks the silence.
  • 1:40 - 1:44
She tells me about when she first got the letter.
  • 1:44 - 1:47
"*I was disgusted and didn't want to tell anyone.*
  • 1:47 - 1:50
    *What would people say?*
  • 1:50 - 1:55
*I couldn't hold it by myself anymore, so I told your stepdad.*
  • 1:55 - 1:58
    *And he said to me:*
  • 1:58 - 2:04
'We always had people like her in our community.
We have to love and respect her.'
  • 2:04 - 2:10
I remember my mother crying, and I felt tears well in my eyes.
  • 2:11 - 2:13
    Finally she says:
  • 2:15 - 2:17
*"That's when I realized I have to love you twice as much,*
  • 2:17 - 2:21
*to make up for all the pain you put up with out there."*
  • 2:21 - 2:24
    She gestures over her head.
  • 2:24 - 2:27
She is right, the mountains protect us,
  • 2:27 - 2:32
and to go outside of them puts us in harms way.
  • 2:32 - 2:37
My mother and I learned this story together.
  • 2:37 - 2:44
[spelling?] Nats aan watches us as we follow the black ribbon of highway into Paige.
  • 2:44 - 2:47
Together, my mother and I are reminded of the stories
  • 2:47 - 2:55
the elders and mountains gave us enough time
    to listen to and accept.
  • 2:57 - 3:00
*[ SINGING , volume increases and the song continues...]*
