The Subtle Danger of Idolizing Pastoral Ministry - Jesse Barrington

  • 0:01 - 0:03
What are some of the most subtle pitfalls
  • 0:03 - 0:05
    and attacks from the devil
  • 0:05 - 0:07
that you can warn others about?
  • 0:07 - 0:09
You know, Paul said we shouldn't
  • 0:09 - 0:11
be ignorant of the schemes of the devil.
  • 0:11 - 0:14
Jesse: It seems to me there's a summary
  • 0:14 - 0:17
that Satan is continually working on.
  • 0:17 - 0:19
    Now, the means he will go about;
  • 0:19 - 0:21
the schemes he will go about
  • 0:21 - 0:25
to bring us to this place are innumerable.
  • 0:25 - 0:26
But it seems to me it keeps
  • 0:26 - 0:28
getting to one point, and that is this:
  • 0:28 - 0:31
to get your eyes off of Jesus Christ
  • 0:31 - 0:34
    and onto yourself.
  • 0:34 - 0:36
And so there are many different ways
  • 0:36 - 0:37
    he goes about this,
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    whether it's through
    different relationships,
  • 0:39 - 0:42
    whether it's spiritual pride,
    whether it's in sin, temptations,
  • 0:42 - 0:45
but inevitably, as I talk with people
  • 0:45 - 0:47
or look at my own life,
  • 0:47 - 0:48
    we come to find out
  • 0:48 - 0:50
    there's been a shift
  • 0:50 - 0:52
and I'm no longer looking to abiding
  • 0:52 - 0:54
    in Jesus Christ.
  • 0:54 - 0:56
And if he can get you to stop
  • 0:56 - 0:57
    abiding in Jesus Christ,
  • 0:57 - 0:59
and get your eyes off of Him
  • 0:59 - 1:00
    and onto yourself,
  • 1:00 - 1:04
then what John 15 says is true -
  • 1:04 - 1:06
without Him you can do nothing.
  • 1:06 - 1:08
It will just unravel very quickly.
  • 1:08 - 1:10
    So the subtlety of Satan
  • 1:10 - 1:12
    in so many different ways
  • 1:12 - 1:14
to just slowly get your eyes
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    off of Jesus Christ.
  • 1:16 - 1:19
I confess last year in the conference,
  • 1:19 - 1:22
he did it with me in the area of ministry,
  • 1:22 - 1:25
where I was finding identity in ministry
  • 1:25 - 1:30
rather than the identity of a
    resurrected Savior in Jesus Christ.
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    And things began to unravel.
  • 1:32 - 1:34
And as I would look at my life,
  • 1:34 - 1:35
    I would say what's wrong?
  • 1:35 - 1:38
    I'm reading. I'm studying. I'm preaching.
  • 1:38 - 1:39
    I'm evangelizing. I'm praying.
  • 1:39 - 1:41
    What's going on here?
  • 1:41 - 1:43
Well, what had subtly happened is
  • 1:43 - 1:45
is I no longer found my identity
  • 1:45 - 1:48
as a person under Jesus Christ
  • 1:48 - 1:49
    or in Christ.
  • 1:49 - 1:51
    It was: I'm a pastor.
  • 1:51 - 1:54
So it's very subtle, but usually,
  • 1:54 - 1:56
    you'll find that, oh, I've
taken my eyes off of Christ.
  • 1:56 - 1:58
    Question: As you look back,
  • 1:58 - 2:00
how did that subtly happen to you?
  • 2:00 - 2:02
Jesse: Well, I began to see that I was
  • 2:02 - 2:07
    asking of pastoral ministry
  • 2:07 - 2:08
what it could never give me.
  • 2:08 - 2:12
I was asking it to be
    my functional savior.
  • 2:12 - 2:14
And so you begin to put demands on things.
  • 2:14 - 2:16
And you can do this with your marriage.
  • 2:16 - 2:18
You can do it with friends, your job,
  • 2:18 - 2:19
    your workplace.
  • 2:19 - 2:23
The moment you ask something to be
  • 2:23 - 2:26
what only Christ can be for you,
  • 2:26 - 2:29
then you put demands upon that thing.
  • 2:29 - 2:31
And it will eventually begin to expose
  • 2:31 - 2:34
    and show, hey, you've done
    something wrong here.
  • 2:34 - 2:39
And so, I was asking of
    ministry to be my joy.
  • 2:39 - 2:42
    I was asking of ministry
    to be my identity.
  • 2:42 - 2:45
And I was so looking for it in ministry,
  • 2:45 - 2:47
that I was willing to begin to neglect
  • 2:47 - 2:50
    other areas of my life
    that God's called me to,
  • 2:50 - 2:53
    namely, my marriage, my children.
  • 2:53 - 2:55
Because I'm so wanting to find joy
  • 2:55 - 2:58
    and identity in ministry,
  • 2:58 - 3:00
    not in Jesus Christ.
  • 3:00 - 3:05
Paul Washer - this has been 14 years ago.
  • 3:05 - 3:07
    Probably the first time I
    met him or second time.
  • 3:07 - 3:09
He looked me in the eye
  • 3:09 - 3:14
and he said, "Jesse, the will of
God for your life is perfect."
  • 3:14 - 3:15
I said, "What do you mean by that?"
  • 3:15 - 3:19
He said, "God will never ask you
  • 3:19 - 3:22
to forsake one area of stewardship
  • 3:22 - 3:25
    to fulfill another."
  • 3:25 - 3:28
    And you apply that to
where I was at last year.
  • 3:28 - 3:30
I don't have to forsake my wife
  • 3:30 - 3:33
to fulfill my call in ministry.
  • 3:33 - 3:36
There are always going to be strains.
  • 3:36 - 3:38
    There's always a constant reforming -
  • 3:38 - 3:41
    semper reformanda -
    we're always reforming.
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    We're always looking and examining.
  • 3:43 - 3:45
But you never have to forsake the one
  • 3:45 - 3:47
    to fulfill the other.
  • 3:47 - 3:50
    And that's a sign that we're off.
  • 3:50 - 3:52
Question: And I guess this kind of deals
  • 3:52 - 3:53
    with the one question.
  • 3:53 - 3:56
    Have you ever struggled
    with being burned out
  • 3:56 - 3:58
as a pastor? If so, why?
  • 3:58 - 4:00
    And what helped you to
    get out of that season?
  • 4:00 - 4:02
    And what did you learn?
  • 4:02 - 4:05
Jesse: In 1 Thessalonians 5, Paul says,
  • 4:05 - 4:07
we ask you, brothers, to respect those
  • 4:07 - 4:11
who toil, who labor among you.
  • 4:11 - 4:13
And he asks them to respect them
  • 4:13 - 4:15
because of the work that they do.
  • 4:15 - 4:17
And so I take from that
  • 4:17 - 4:18
that the role of the pastor
  • 4:18 - 4:21
is going to be one that is a toiling
  • 4:21 - 4:24
    and an exhausting role.
  • 4:24 - 4:26
    And that's different though
  • 4:26 - 4:29
    than being burned out.
  • 4:29 - 4:32
    So when we're fulfilling
    our role pastorally,
  • 4:32 - 4:34
    we should be exhausted.
  • 4:34 - 4:36
    And that's not wrong.
  • 4:36 - 4:38
The difference is being burned out.
  • 4:38 - 4:39
And what I came to see is
  • 4:39 - 4:42
I was beginning to be burned out
  • 4:42 - 4:46
because I was relying on my own strength,
  • 4:46 - 4:48
    my own power,
  • 4:48 - 4:51
and again, I was looking to ministry
  • 4:51 - 4:54
    to be my functional savior.
  • 4:54 - 4:56
And it's a very subtle change.
  • 4:56 - 4:59
    It happens gradually over time.
  • 4:59 - 5:00
You know, one of the evidences
  • 5:00 - 5:02
you can see in this is
  • 5:02 - 5:05
    you'll fill your schedule
    with so much busyness,
  • 5:05 - 5:08
that one of the things that
    will begin to slip away
  • 5:08 - 5:09
    is prayer.
  • 5:09 - 5:14
    And prayer always reveals pride.
  • 5:14 - 5:16
In other words, the more I'm praying,
  • 5:16 - 5:17
probably the less proud I am
  • 5:17 - 5:20
    and the less I'm praying,
    the more proud I am.
  • 5:20 - 5:24
    So, your prayer life is
    revealing your pride life.
  • 5:24 - 5:26
Your dependency upon Jesus is seen
  • 5:26 - 5:28
    in your prayer life.
  • 5:28 - 5:30
And so as I began to see
  • 5:30 - 5:34
prayer begin to take a back seat,
  • 5:34 - 5:36
and as I began to look to ministry
  • 5:36 - 5:37
    what it could never be
  • 5:37 - 5:40
and ask of ministry to be
    what it never should be,
  • 5:40 - 5:42
    which is my functional savior.
  • 5:42 - 5:47
    And I began to be
    willing to give up things
  • 5:47 - 5:49
    to get from ministry
    what I was looking for
  • 5:49 - 5:51
which can only be found in Christ.
  • 5:51 - 5:55
    And so, pastoral ministry
    in the true sense
  • 5:55 - 5:58
    has always been energizing
  • 5:58 - 5:59
    and exciting for me.
  • 5:59 - 6:01
But when you see yourself beginning
  • 6:01 - 6:03
    to be burned out,
  • 6:03 - 6:07
then you are looking to ministry
    for what it shouldn't be,
  • 6:07 - 6:10
you're relying upon your own strength
  • 6:10 - 6:13
instead of the power of the Holy Spirit.
  • 6:13 - 6:17
Or, you've given ministry the priority
  • 6:17 - 6:19
it should not have in your life.
  • 6:19 - 6:22
    Meaning, you're willing to
    neglect other things,
  • 6:22 - 6:24
like your wife and your children.
  • 6:24 - 6:26
And when you do any of those things,
  • 6:26 - 6:27
    you're going to burn out.
  • 6:27 - 6:29
Because now you're in it alone.
  • 6:29 - 6:32
    And praise God that He
    brings you to that place.
  • 6:32 - 6:35
Our church was very gracious with me.
  • 6:35 - 6:38
    My co-pastor who
pastors me and I pastor him
  • 6:38 - 6:39
    came to me and said,
  • 6:39 - 6:41
brother, you just need to take some time.
  • 6:41 - 6:43
    And so I stepped away.
  • 6:43 - 6:45
I went and got with the Lord.
  • 6:45 - 6:46
    Question: How long?
  • 6:46 - 6:50
Jesse: It ended up being three months.
  • 6:50 - 6:56
That was the best and the
    hardest time of my life.
  • 6:56 - 6:58
Because I woke up every morning, James,
  • 6:58 - 7:01
with nothing to put before the Lord
  • 7:01 - 7:03
    for His approval -
  • 7:03 - 7:06
    in the sense of ministry.
  • 7:06 - 7:07
Like, look at the sermon I preached.
  • 7:07 - 7:10
    Look at these people.
    Look at the counseling.
  • 7:10 - 7:11
    Look at the souls.
  • 7:11 - 7:12
    I had nothing.
  • 7:12 - 7:15
I woke up in desperate need
  • 7:15 - 7:17
of a resurrected Savior every day,
  • 7:17 - 7:19
and found my identity and acceptance
  • 7:19 - 7:21
    before God in Christ alone.
  • 7:21 - 7:22
    And it was healing.
  • 7:22 - 7:24
    I repented to my wife.
  • 7:24 - 7:27
    Repented to my kids.
    Repented to the church.
  • 7:27 - 7:32
    And God has graciously
    restored me in that.
  • 7:32 - 7:35
    And the church was so
    gracious and kind with me.
  • 7:35 - 7:37
And I think one of the great challenges
  • 7:37 - 7:39
    with pastoral ministry
  • 7:39 - 7:42
is that when you begin to give it
  • 7:42 - 7:44
    a wrong priority - meaning,
    you neglect things
  • 7:44 - 7:46
in your life that you shouldn't -
  • 7:46 - 7:49
    and I'm not accusing anyone
in our church of this -
  • 7:49 - 7:52
    but it's almost accepted,
  • 7:52 - 7:55
    because you're doing kingdom work.
  • 7:55 - 7:58
Where if someone was giving up their wife
  • 7:58 - 8:00
    for the stock market,
  • 8:00 - 8:02
    we would say, oh, look
    how impure this man is.
  • 8:02 - 8:06
    Look how ill-motive and
    wrongly prioritized he is.
  • 8:06 - 8:08
But a man can do it in ministry
  • 8:08 - 8:11
and people will almost applaud him.
  • 8:11 - 8:13
    And brother, it's wrong.
  • 8:13 - 8:15
    It's wrong.
  • 8:15 - 8:19
So, yeah, by God's grace - three months.
  • 8:19 - 8:22
And we stepped away from the church.
  • 8:22 - 8:24
Because I knew if I was in the church,
  • 8:24 - 8:25
    I would pastor.
  • 8:25 - 8:27
So we went to Mack's church quite often.
  • 8:27 - 8:29
We went to a few other brother's churches.
  • 8:29 - 8:30
    We traveled some.
  • 8:30 - 8:34
And it was a very restoring time
  • 8:34 - 8:35
    for the church
  • 8:35 - 8:37
and a very restoring time for me.
  • 8:37 - 8:39
    So, praise the Lord.
