Why agriculture is important
-
0:02 - 0:03Most development economics,
-
0:03 - 0:06especially at low levels
of per capita income, -
0:06 - 0:07is about agriculture.
-
0:09 - 0:13In poor countries, agriculture
simply is most of the economy, -
0:13 - 0:16and for most of the last 12,000 years,
-
0:16 - 0:18agriculture has been
the most important economic sector -
0:18 - 0:20in all regions of the world
-
0:20 - 0:23until, of course,
recent industrialization. -
0:23 - 0:26The advent of cheap readily available food
-
0:26 - 0:29is one of the greatest advances
in human history. -
0:30 - 0:31It has meant that human beings
-
0:31 - 0:34can turn their attentions
and energies away -
0:34 - 0:36from simply finding something to eat
-
0:36 - 0:40to building more important tools
or to creating more art and music -
0:40 - 0:42or to spending more time with other people
-
0:42 - 0:44or whatever it is they want to do.
-
0:44 - 0:46Cheap food has enabled all of this.
-
0:47 - 0:51It's common consensus that increases
in agricultural productivity -
0:51 - 0:54are the most effective means
of poverty reduction -
0:54 - 0:57especially for people living on,
say, a dollar or two a day. -
0:58 - 1:02The growth in agricultural productivity
brings at least two benefits: -
1:02 - 1:06first, real incomes
from farming employment can be higher; -
1:06 - 1:09and second, food is much cheaper
and easier to get. -
1:10 - 1:15Agricultural revolutions are, in fact,
the precursors of industrial revolutions. -
1:15 - 1:19The Industrial Revolution in England,
in the 18th century, -
1:19 - 1:23was preceded by significant advances
in agricultural productivity. -
1:23 - 1:27The success stories of economic
development in the 20th century -
1:27 - 1:31were again preceded by advances
in agricultural productivity. -
1:32 - 1:36Agriculture is a base upon which
an economy can build further growth. -
1:36 - 1:40Furthermore, simply having enough to eat
brings many indirect benefits. -
1:40 - 1:43For instance, imagine a child
going to school hungry. -
1:43 - 1:46The child probably will not learn
very effectively. -
1:46 - 1:48Imagine a child growing up hungry.
-
1:48 - 1:50The child will be more prone to diseases.
-
1:51 - 1:53The story of economic development
-
1:53 - 1:58is, in large part, a story of cheap
and readily available foodstuffs. -
2:00 - 2:01To read more on some of these points,
-
2:01 - 2:03look at this reference
-
2:03 - 2:06or google "agriculture poverty reduction."
