Why agriculture is important

  • 0:02 - 0:03
    Most development economics,
  • 0:03 - 0:06
    especially at low levels
    of per capita income,
  • 0:06 - 0:07
    is about agriculture.
  • 0:09 - 0:13
    In poor countries, agriculture
simply is most of the economy,
  • 0:13 - 0:16
and for most of the last 12,000 years,
  • 0:16 - 0:18
    agriculture has been
    the most important economic sector
  • 0:18 - 0:20
in all regions of the world
  • 0:20 - 0:23
    until, of course,
    recent industrialization.
  • 0:23 - 0:26
The advent of cheap readily available food
  • 0:26 - 0:29
is one of the greatest advances
    in human history.
  • 0:30 - 0:31
It has meant that human beings
  • 0:31 - 0:34
    can turn their attentions
    and energies away
  • 0:34 - 0:36
from simply finding something to eat
  • 0:36 - 0:40
    to building more important tools
or to creating more art and music
  • 0:40 - 0:42
or to spending more time with other people
  • 0:42 - 0:44
or whatever it is they want to do.
  • 0:44 - 0:46
Cheap food has enabled all of this.
  • 0:47 - 0:51
    It's common consensus that increases
    in agricultural productivity
  • 0:51 - 0:54
    are the most effective means
    of poverty reduction
  • 0:54 - 0:57
    especially for people living on,
say, a dollar or two a day.
  • 0:58 - 1:02
    The growth in agricultural productivity
    brings at least two benefits:
  • 1:02 - 1:06
    first, real incomes
    from farming employment can be higher;
  • 1:06 - 1:09
and second, food is much cheaper
    and easier to get.
  • 1:10 - 1:15
    Agricultural revolutions are, in fact,
    the precursors of industrial revolutions.
  • 1:15 - 1:19
    The Industrial Revolution in England,
    in the 18th century,
  • 1:19 - 1:23
    was preceded by significant advances
    in agricultural productivity.
  • 1:23 - 1:27
    The success stories of economic
    development in the 20th century
  • 1:27 - 1:31
    were again preceded by advances
    in agricultural productivity.
  • 1:32 - 1:36
Agriculture is a base upon which
an economy can build further growth.
  • 1:36 - 1:40
Furthermore, simply having enough to eat
    brings many indirect benefits.
  • 1:40 - 1:43
    For instance, imagine a child
    going to school hungry.
  • 1:43 - 1:46
The child probably will not learn
    very effectively.
  • 1:46 - 1:48
Imagine a child growing up hungry.
  • 1:48 - 1:50
The child will be more prone to diseases.
  • 1:51 - 1:53
    The story of economic development
  • 1:53 - 1:58
is, in large part, a story of cheap
    and readily available foodstuffs.
  • 2:00 - 2:01
To read more on some of these points,
  • 2:01 - 2:03
    look at this reference
  • 2:03 - 2:06
    or google "agriculture poverty reduction."
