José returns home to Cape Verde after more than 10 years away to find his community transformed. The fish that have provided income and food for generations are disappearing from the sea, and people are being forced to sell the sand from their beaches just to survive. Sandgrains follows José as he seeks to understand what has happened. It is a film about what happens when people start asking a simple question: why?

But one can't. One must eat.

We don't have large enough marine resources.

If they exploit, we will be left with just the memory of Cape Verde with an ocean that used to have a lot of fish.

Through fisheries agreements other countries get authorized to fish in Cape Verdean waters.

This agreement is an incentive for the European to fish every day more!Because if you fish more you pay less!

The protocol stipulates 5000 tons per year, of tuna and alike.

What is this "alike"?

The fishing of sharks is illegal, the transhipment of sharks is illegal.

We have to do something.
