  • 0:00 - 0:02
Phoenix is out on location this morning
  • 0:02 - 0:04
    with Denise Young right now,
  • 0:04 - 0:07
who is the Picture This Film Festival Director.
  • 0:07 - 0:08
    Hi Phoenix.
  • 0:10 - 0:12
    Hey Kate, hi everybody.
  • 0:12 - 0:14
Filming film is the topic of discussion today
  • 0:14 - 0:16
so we brought Denise in because
  • 0:16 - 0:19
there is another event, the PTFF
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    explain that.
  • 0:21 - 0:23
PTFF is short for Picture This Film Festival
  • 0:23 - 0:25
which is...we're kicking off our our
  • 0:25 - 0:28
    fourthteenth year of celebrating films
  • 0:28 - 0:30
either made by people with disabilities
  • 0:30 - 0:35
on any topic or about disability
  • 0:35 - 0:36
and those may or may not be
  • 0:36 - 0:38
    filmmakers with disabilities.
  • 0:38 - 0:40
Why is this film festival so important
  • 0:40 - 0:43
to Calgarians and also to these film makers?
  • 0:43 - 0:46
I think it's really important for...to get that voice out
  • 0:46 - 0:48
because it isn't a voice that you get to see
  • 0:48 - 0:50
on the mainstream media as much.
  • 0:50 - 0:53
It gives an opportunity for people to tell their stories
  • 0:53 - 0:55
and we even say we have an educational function
  • 0:55 - 0:57
to educate the broader community about people
  • 0:57 - 0:59
with disabilities and the reality of their lives
  • 0:59 - 1:01
    not…not the fictions
  • 1:01 - 1:02
that are, kind of, in mainstream media.
  • 1:02 - 1:04
Yeah. There's a couple of examples we're going to
  • 1:04 - 1:05
show here in just a quick second.
  • 1:05 - 1:07
These are amazing and it comes from all
  • 1:07 - 1:09
different parts of the country as well too
  • 1:09 - 1:10
    not necessarily just Canada
  • 1:10 - 1:13
but how many countries are being represented?
  • 1:13 - 1:14
This year we had a 125 entries
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    from 26 different countries
  • 1:16 - 1:18
and of the award winners there were
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    10 different countries represented.
  • 1:20 - 1:23
It's a little daunting putting on something like this
  • 1:23 - 1:25
even though you've been doing it for 14 years,
  • 1:25 - 1:27
    How are you managing?
  • 1:27 - 1:29
Well, um, okay. Our real festival director
  • 1:29 - 1:32
is on a long term disability leave so we have
  • 1:32 - 1:35
a bunch of people standing in to replace the one.
  • 1:35 - 1:37
I think you're going to talk to one of my colleagues
  • 1:37 - 1:38
who is working with me, from London,
  • 1:38 - 1:39
    in a few minutes
  • 1:39 - 1:40
    Beautiful
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    …the co-curator for the festival, so…
  • 1:42 - 1:43
and there's lots of people, just lots of people
  • 1:43 - 1:45
    working and lots of volunteers.
  • 1:45 - 1:47
We usually have between fifteen hundred
  • 1:47 - 1:48
and a thou…or two thousand hours
  • 1:48 - 1:50
of volunteer time put in by, you know,
  • 1:50 - 1:52
    ninety to a hundred volunteers.
  • 1:52 - 1:53
    Come on! That's amazing!
  • 1:53 - 1:55
Yeah, there's a lot of commitment to the festival.
  • 1:55 - 1:57
You know, we're asking our poll question about
  • 1:57 - 1:58
whether or not the film industry
  • 1:58 - 2:01
IS important to Alberta, IS important to Calgary.
  • 2:01 - 2:02
How would you respond to that?
  • 2:02 - 2:05
I think it's very important. We were talking a bit
  • 2:05 - 2:08
earlier about that new facility they want to build.
  • 2:08 - 2:11
Being able to actually create works locally…
  • 2:11 - 2:14
for the international audience but also for the local
  • 2:14 - 2:16
audience for some of the independent film makers,
  • 2:16 - 2:17
    the smaller budget people,
  • 2:17 - 2:20
absolutely important and probably a big employer
  • 2:20 - 2:21
in the Province, I would imagine, as well.
  • 2:21 - 2:24
The uniqueness of the Picture This Film Festival
  • 2:24 - 2:26
is that you certain criteria for these films as well.
  • 2:26 - 2:29
Yeah, the criteria really just are about who's
  • 2:29 - 2:31
making the films or the topic, right? So, it's either
  • 2:31 - 2:34
a film maker with a disability and as I said, those
  • 2:34 - 2:37
can be on anything. We have three entries
  • 2:37 - 2:39
this year from a filmmaker from Kathmandu
  • 2:39 - 2:40
    who has disabilities.
  • 2:40 - 2:41
    Wow
  • 2:41 - 2:43
And one of his entries is on child labour.
  • 2:43 - 2:46
So, it's got nothing to do with disability per se,
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    so…or as I said,
  • 2:48 - 2:49
if it's on the topic of disability
  • 2:49 - 2:51
    anybody can enter a film.
  • 2:51 - 2:52
If you're looking for something unique,
  • 2:52 - 2:53
something kind of different, well, it's
  • 2:53 - 2:55
the Picture This Film Festival the…
  • 2:55 - 2:57
your website so that you can see these films?
  • 2:57 - 2:59
    Yes, it's PTFF.org
  • 2:59 - 3:01
which is short for Picture This Film Festival.
  • 3:01 - 3:02
    Wonderful stuff.
  • 3:02 - 3:03
So, all the information is on there.
  • 3:03 - 3:06
Denise Young, she is the festival director,
  • 3:06 - 3:07
    the acting festival director.
  • 3:07 - 3:09
    Thank you for coming in
  • 3:09 - 3:10
and let's see more of these films.
  • 3:10 - 3:11
    Great Stuff.
