Robinson Crusoe | Desert Island of Ego

  • 0:03 - 0:07
    Here we’re making
    a distinction,
  • 0:07 - 0:11
    we’re defining,
    connotating,
  • 0:11 - 0:15
    we’re increasing the connotation
of what is meant by ‘heart’,
  • 0:15 - 0:18
[Robinson Crusoe | Desert Island of Ego]
  • 0:18 - 0:25
    because from
    a mundane point of view
  • 0:26 - 0:31
    in the 7th chapter
    of the Bhagavad-gītā Kṛṣṇa says,
  • 0:31 - 0:36
    bhūmir āpo ’nalo vāyuḥ
    khaṁ mano buddhir eva ca

  • 0:36 - 0:40
    ahaṅkāra itīyaṁ me
    bhinnā prakṛtir aṣṭadhā
    [Bg: 7.4]
  • 0:40 - 0:47
    He outlines sequentially
what are the eight material elements:
  • 0:47 - 0:50
    bhūmir āpo ’nalo vāyuḥ
    [Cc: 2.6.164],
  • 0:50 - 0:57
    earth, water, fire, air, ether,
    mind, and intelligence,
  • 0:57 - 1:00
    and ahaṅkāra
    false ego.
  • 1:01 - 1:05
    In the following śloka
    He says,
  • 1:05 - 1:10
    apareyam itas tv anyāṁ
    prakṛtiṁ viddhi me parām

  • 1:10 - 1:16
    jīva-bhūtāṁ mahā-bāho
    yayedaṁ dhāryate jagat

    [Bg: 7.5]
  • 1:16 - 1:20
    He says that,
    “But the jīva, jīva-śakti
  • 1:20 - 1:30
    (what I’ve just outlined
    is prakṛti—mundane energy)
  • 1:30 - 1:36
    jīva is a superior
    type of śakti,
  • 1:37 - 1:41
    which is above
    these eight elements.”
  • 1:41 - 1:47
    So although we don’t normally
think of it this way, it’s not the first verse
  • 1:47 - 1:50
that would come to our mind
    in terms of sahajiyāism.
  • 1:50 - 1:56
    Śrīla Guru Mahārāj used it
    as a refutation of sahajiyāism.
  • 1:57 - 2:02
Along these lines that their idea
    is that by reconditioning
  • 2:02 - 2:08
    the element of mind,
    the mundane element of mind,
  • 2:08 - 2:11
    filling it with images
    of Kṛṣṇa,
  • 2:11 - 2:15
    making it accustomed
    to hearing certain sounds,
  • 2:15 - 2:19
    that one will have
    some sort of epiphany,
  • 2:19 - 2:24
    and their swarūp
    will manifest.
  • 2:26 - 2:32
Guru Mahārāj is of the opinion
that all of this must dissolve.
  • 2:35 - 2:38
    Because the subtlest aspect
    is ahaṅkāra, false ego,
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    but then the buddhi,
    the mind,
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    the body that’s housing
    these elements—
  • 2:43 - 2:47
    all of these
    must be dissolved.
  • 2:48 - 2:51
    In what way? Or …
Gurudev gave a famous lecture called
  • 2:51 - 2:54
    “Dissolving the pillars of ego.”
  • 2:54 - 2:57
    “Demolishing the pillars of ego.”
  • 2:57 - 3:05
    How? Not through some
    Buddhistic type of dissolution,
  • 3:05 - 3:12
    but rather through service,
  • 3:12 - 3:15
    through service engagement,
    through dedication.
  • 3:15 - 3:20
    Biological expression
of the soul’s delusion is the body.
  • 3:20 - 3:26
    It’s the outcome of jīva’s
    exploiting tendency,
  • 3:27 - 3:31
    the desire
    to lord over matter.
  • 3:31 - 3:34
    Sometimes he would quote
    “Robinson Crusoe”.
  • 3:34 - 3:40
    Alexander Selkirk, the famous …
The man shipwrecked on the island.
  • 3:40 - 3:44
And he has a line, where he says,
“I am the lord of all I survey.”
  • 3:44 - 3:45
    So he’s saying,
  • 3:45 - 3:49
    “This mood, this mania
    that I’m the master
  • 3:50 - 3:55
    and detesting
    the very notion of …
  • 3:55 - 4:03
    servitude or,
    by extension, slavery,
  • 4:03 - 4:07
    being subordinate,
    being submissive.”
  • 4:08 - 4:14
    In modern times any qualities
    associated with this notion
  • 4:14 - 4:22
    are considered undesirable
    and detrimental
  • 4:22 - 4:28
    to developing oneself
    and one’s self-esteem, etc.
  • 4:28 - 4:32
So the body is a biological expression
    of the soul’s delusion,
  • 4:32 - 4:35
    that includes mind,
    intelligence,
  • 4:35 - 4:39
    but the outcome
    of exploiting tendency,
  • 4:39 - 4:43
    the biological outcome
    of exploiting tendency,
  • 4:43 - 4:48
    if we become connected
    to the service plane,
  • 4:49 - 4:52
    if we withdraw
    from being exploiting agents
  • 4:52 - 4:56
    and become enriched
    with a dedicating tendency,
  • 4:56 - 5:03
    then the body,
    mind, intelligence,
  • 5:03 - 5:05
    which were the outcome
    of the exploiting tendency,
  • 5:05 - 5:12
    start to vanish,
and the spiritual mind, intellect, body
  • 5:12 - 5:16
    begin to manifest—the swarūp.
