Raúl de Nieves & Colin Self Harmonize | Art21 "New York Close Up"

  • 0:01 - 0:03
    [STEADY PERCUSSIVE SOUNDS]
  • 0:10 - 0:12
    [PERFORMER SINGING]
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    [RAUL DE NIEVES]
I remember moving to New York
  • 0:21 - 0:24
and coming here to The Kitchen
    to see a production,
  • 0:24 - 0:27
and now our work is being mounted here.
  • 0:27 - 0:28
    ["New York Close Up"]
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    It's not a dream anymore!
  • 0:33 - 0:36
[COLIN SELF] This is our first time ever
    making a real opera.
  • 0:38 - 0:41
["Raúl de Nieves and Colin Self Harmonize"]
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    [SCREAMING IN UNISON]
  • 0:44 - 0:46
[DE NIEVES] I play the dog.
  • 0:46 - 0:47
    [SELF] I'm the old woman.
  • 0:48 - 0:50
[DE NIEVES] And the old woman is the wisest.
  • 0:51 - 0:52
    [SELF LAUGHS]
  • 0:52 - 0:53
    [DE NIEVES] She is.
  • 0:53 - 0:55
[SELF] I don't know, I think the dog might
    be the wisest.
  • 0:55 - 0:58
[DE NIEVES] Well the dog and the old woman are
    the same person actually, so...
  • 0:58 - 0:59
[SELF] But they are the same person.
  • 1:03 - 1:05
    [DE NIEVES]
--Or maybe it's like I give you my hand or something.
  • 1:06 - 1:09
--Like what if we never touch hands or something?
  • 1:10 - 1:12
--We're so far away from one another.
  • 1:13 - 1:15
    [MOANING IN UNISON]
  • 1:20 - 1:21
    [DE NIEVES]
    --I think that's really good.
  • 1:21 - 1:22
    [SELF]
    --Yeah.
  • 1:22 - 1:24
    [BOTH LAUGH]
  • 1:24 - 1:25
    [DE NIEVES]
    --You're so crazy
  • 1:26 - 1:27
    [SELF]
    --That's cool.
  • 1:27 - 1:30
--You and I having this really still interaction...
  • 1:30 - 1:35
[DE NIEVES] Colin and I met while we were
both asked to play a show.
  • 1:37 - 1:38
[SELF] I think I had just moved to New York,
  • 1:38 - 1:43
and I remember that I was trying to find
a sense of community or place.
  • 1:43 - 1:44
    [BOTH SCREAM]
  • 1:44 - 1:48
[DE NIEVES] I had recently migrated from Mexico
    to America,
  • 1:48 - 1:55
and music was the first escape
    of my everyday reality.
  • 1:58 - 2:01
This is when I was starting my band, Haribo.
  • 2:01 - 2:07
We were kind of creating more of
a noise soundscape to this performance.
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    Colin had performed before us.
  • 2:10 - 2:14
I just remember seeing him thrashing around.
  • 2:14 - 2:18
[SELF] It was just one of those things
of watching someone perform and being like,
  • 2:18 - 2:21
"Oh my gosh, we are from the same universe!"
  • 2:21 - 2:25
[DE NIEVES] It's never been me, me, me, me,
    me, you know--
  • 2:25 - 2:27
it's always been me and you.
  • 2:27 - 2:28
[SELF] Us, us, us, us, us, us, us, us.
  • 2:30 - 2:34
[DE NIEVES] My friends teach me how to give,
    how to receive.
  • 2:35 - 2:39
Without the little help each one of us gives
    one another,
  • 2:39 - 2:43
it would actually be very hard to sustain
    a normal life.
  • 2:43 - 2:44
    [DE NIEVES]
    --It's real!
  • 2:45 - 2:47
    My friends are my guidance.
  • 2:47 - 2:51
    [SELF]
--Why don't we get into a circle.
  • 2:52 - 2:53
    [PERFORMERS SINGING]
  • 3:00 - 3:03
The majority of the people who've joined
  • 3:03 - 3:07
have been a part of this ongoing choir practice
    that I've been leading.
  • 3:10 - 3:13
    [SELF SINGING]
--Letting it warm up the room.
  • 3:15 - 3:21
I started just thinking about what does it mean
to gather people together to sing?
  • 3:21 - 3:23
    What can come from that?
  • 3:23 - 3:27
It felt really powerful in a way that
    I wasn't anticipating.
  • 3:30 - 3:33
[DE NIEVES] Personal experiences really helped
    shape the work.
  • 3:34 - 3:39
In Mexico, we didn't really have much
    exposure to contemporary art.
  • 3:41 - 3:45
So I always looked up to the performers I
    saw on the street,
  • 3:45 - 3:49
    portraying these characters through
    costume and props
  • 3:49 - 3:52
    and spontaneous street performance.
  • 3:53 - 3:58
    Performance really opened up a
void for me to experiment with art.
  • 4:01 - 4:07
    The sets and the costumes
were made from pretty much nothing.
  • 4:07 - 4:10
We always wanted this grand set of doors.
  • 4:11 - 4:15
Through the help of non-for-profit organizations,
    like Materials for the Arts,
  • 4:15 - 4:18
we were able to acquire all the gems.
  • 4:18 - 4:21
    Everything else was just
    a labor of love.
  • 4:25 - 4:28
[SELF] "The Fool" itself is a characterization
    of learning--
  • 4:28 - 4:30
    that this practice of discovery,
  • 4:32 - 4:35
by the time they finish their journey,
    are back where they began.
  • 4:37 - 4:38
    [AUDIENCE APPLAUDS]
  • 4:38 - 4:41
    [STRING AND VOCAL PERFORMANCE INTENSIFIES]
  • 4:56 - 4:58
[DE NIEVES] Every character on stage is
    the fool
  • 4:58 - 5:00
    including the child, the mother,
  • 5:01 - 5:04
the fools that are hidden in the background,
  • 5:05 - 5:07
    the old woman and dog.
  • 5:08 - 5:09
    [YELLING]
  • 5:13 - 5:17
    Essentially,
    each character sees something different.
  • 5:19 - 5:20
And that's why at the end
  • 5:20 - 5:24
    the dog comes back
and speaks to this old woman
  • 5:24 - 5:30
    to remind her that
she has had all this wisdom within herself.
  • 5:31 - 5:33
    [PERFORMERS SINGING]
