Are You Truly a Psalm 1 Man? - Tim Conway

  • Not Synced
Brethren, please turn in your Bibles
  • Not Synced
    to Psalm 1.
  • Not Synced
Our brother Craig said he felt inclined
  • Not Synced
to preach from this psalm last week,
  • Not Synced
    but he didn't, because
    the week before that
  • Not Synced
    Brother Nathan Rages
  • Not Synced
brought us a message on stability
  • Not Synced
    or stay-bility.
  • Not Synced
And Craig felt that he didn't just use
  • Not Synced
this psalm as a launching point,
  • Not Synced
but kind of stayed here for quite awhile,
  • Not Synced
so Craig thought to move on,
  • Not Synced
    but I think it's interesting
  • Not Synced
that three preachers in a row
  • Not Synced
have been impressed as I have as well,
  • Not Synced
    even before Nathan brought that.
  • Not Synced
    I've been thinking much about
  • Not Synced
    the first psalm.
  • Not Synced
And I am inclined to take us there again,
  • Not Synced
    even after Craig was
    done preaching last week,
  • Not Synced
    I told Craig, I believe I am
  • Not Synced
going to deal with Psalm 1,
  • Not Synced
    and, God helping us,
  • Not Synced
    let's look at it.
  • Not Synced
    Let's read it
  • Not Synced
    in its entirety.
  • Not Synced
    "Blessed is the man..."
  • Not Synced
And I'll tell you, if we know Scripture,
  • Not Synced
there are one in a thousand such men.
  • Not Synced
    "Blessed is the man
  • Not Synced
    who walks not in the
    counsel of the wicked,
  • Not Synced
nor stands in the way of sinners,
  • Not Synced
nor sits in the seat of scoffers.
  • Not Synced
But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
  • Not Synced
    and on His law, he
    meditates day and night.
  • Not Synced
He is like a tree planted
  • Not Synced
    by streams of water,
  • Not Synced
that yields its fruit in its season,
  • Not Synced
and its leaf does not wither.
  • Not Synced
In all that he does, he prospers.
  • Not Synced
    The wicked are not so..."
  • Not Synced
In fact, in the Septuagint, this reads
  • Not Synced
    as a double negative:
  • Not Synced
"Not so the ungodly." Not so.
  • Not Synced
    "...but are like chaff,
  • Not Synced
    that the wind drives away.
  • Not Synced
Therefore the wicked will not stand
  • Not Synced
    in the judgment,
  • Not Synced
    nor sinners in the congregation
  • Not Synced
    of the righteous."
  • Not Synced
    Churches here are mixed,
  • Not Synced
but as we heard in the first hour,
  • Not Synced
every church has at least one devil in it.
  • Not Synced
    They're mixed here.
  • Not Synced
    They won't be then.
  • Not Synced
    "For the Lord knows
  • Not Synced
    the way of the righteous,
  • Not Synced
but the way of the wicked will perish."
  • Not Synced
    This is a psalm.
  • Not Synced
    It's the first one.
  • Not Synced
    In it, you saw it,
  • Not Synced
    there's two men.
  • Not Synced
    There's one called (v. 1) blessed...
  • Not Synced
    is the man.
  • Not Synced
And then when you look down in v. 6,
  • Not Synced
"The Lord knows the way of the righteous."
  • Not Synced
There's one man - the blessed man,
  • Not Synced
    the righteous man.
  • Not Synced
    And then there's another man.
  • Not Synced
    And you see him here.
  • Not Synced
    V. 4 - "The wicked are not so."
  • Not Synced
    V. 5 "The wicked will not stand..."
  • Not Synced
    V. 6 "The wicked will perish."
  • Not Synced
    We're all here.
  • Not Synced
    All mankind encapsulated
    in this one psalm.
  • Not Synced
But see, I see a problem right off.
  • Not Synced
I mean, as I read this,
  • Not Synced
and I think about preaching it.
  • Not Synced
I recognize, you as you process this,
  • Not Synced
that man has a built-in disposition
  • Not Synced
to deny and reject that he is wicked.
  • Not Synced
Nobody takes that term upon themselves.
  • Not Synced
I know you've got certain crazy people
  • Not Synced
out there that delight in such things.
  • Not Synced
    But I'll tell you, when
    really pushed to it,
  • Not Synced
as far as their eternal welfare,
  • Not Synced
as far as their standing before God,
  • Not Synced
    men sarcastically will talk about
  • Not Synced
    being wicked,
  • Not Synced
    or in their pride,
  • Not Synced
they will try to outdo one another
  • Not Synced
    in evil deeds,
  • Not Synced
but when they're pressed to it,
  • Not Synced
men say, well, in the depths of my heart,
  • Not Synced
    really at the deepest level,
  • Not Synced
    I'm a good person.
  • Not Synced
    You see, I recognize
    there's a disposition.
  • Not Synced
    Why?
  • Not Synced
Because the word just sounds too horrible.
  • Not Synced
    Wicked.
  • Not Synced
    It's too heinous.
  • Not Synced
It's just too bad to describe me.
  • Not Synced
    And here's what happens:
  • Not Synced
    So, men think to themselves,
  • Not Synced
Ok, I'm about to hear the righteous
  • Not Synced
    compared with the wicked.
  • Not Synced
Well, I know I'm not wicked.
  • Not Synced
    So somehow or another,
  • Not Synced
what's said of the righteous -
  • Not Synced
    it has to describe me.
  • Not Synced
    Maybe not perfectly,
  • Not Synced
    but I'm in there somewhere.
  • Not Synced
    Because I'm not wicked.
  • Not Synced
    I know I'm not that.
  • Not Synced
So, somehow I've got to fit in over here.
  • Not Synced
What's said of the wicked man
  • Not Synced
can't possibly be true of me.
  • Not Synced
    You see, men, men... presuppositions.
  • Not Synced
    They're ideas about themselves.
  • Not Synced
In fact, what's interesting is how often
  • Not Synced
the Bible has to tell us who we are.
  • Not Synced
    It's amazing.
  • Not Synced
It has to tell wicked people who they are,
  • Not Synced
and it has to tell the
    righteous who they are.
  • Not Synced
    Why?
  • Not Synced
Because we have a real hard time
  • Not Synced
    getting that straight ourselves,
  • Not Synced
    even as Christians.
  • Not Synced
    Think about how often
  • Not Synced
    the New Testament is simply
  • Not Synced
    telling Christians who they are.
  • Not Synced
    We don't get it right.
  • Not Synced
As Christians, we tend to think less
  • Not Synced
of ourselves than we ought to.
  • Not Synced
    And as lost people,
  • Not Synced
we tend to think far more of ourselves
  • Not Synced
    than we ought to.
  • Not Synced
We have a real hard time
  • Not Synced
    getting this straight.
  • Not Synced
    And so God comes along
  • Not Synced
and over and over and over again,
  • Not Synced
He is telling us who we are.
  • Not Synced
    What we are.
  • Not Synced
This is why the Bible goes
  • Not Synced
    to all these lengths
  • Not Synced
to define us over and over.
  • Not Synced
    And you know what?
  • Not Synced
There's nothing that tells us who we are
  • Not Synced
like this book tells us who we are.
  • Not Synced
Nothing describes us like this book.
  • Not Synced
    So, here's the thing,
  • Not Synced
    v. 4, the wicked are not so.
  • Not Synced
    You know what?
  • Not Synced
If we could just tear that out -
  • Not Synced
we don't want to do that,
  • Not Synced
but if we did, if we just replaced it
  • Not Synced
with "the man of the world..."
  • Not Synced
    intelligent, intellectual, wise,
  • Not Synced
    independent, fun-loving,
  • Not Synced
    free-spirited, free thinking, witty...
  • Not Synced
    you know what,
  • Not Synced
we might get more people to be honest.
  • Not Synced
    Because the problem is,
  • Not Synced
as soon as the word wicked comes up,
  • Not Synced
    oh, that's not me!
  • Not Synced
    But you know, if we
    redefined it a little bit,
  • Not Synced
and put it in more acceptable terms,
  • Not Synced
people would let their guard down.
  • Not Synced
    But that word wicked...
  • Not Synced
    what about that?
  • Not Synced
It makes us think of wicked witches.
  • Not Synced
The wicked - like the devil.
  • Not Synced
But notice the simplicity of it all.
  • Not Synced
    Look at v. 4.
  • Not Synced
    "The wicked are not so."
  • Not Synced
    Just think about that.
  • Not Synced
Think about the simplicity of that.
  • Not Synced
    The wicked are not so.
  • Not Synced
    There's no horns.
  • Not Synced
    There's no pointed hat
  • Not Synced
    and black cats here.
  • Not Synced
    They don't torture people
    in their basement.
  • Not Synced
    What is it?
  • Not Synced
    What's true of the righteous...
  • Not Synced
    not so.
  • Not Synced
    That's the wicked.
  • Not Synced
    They're not pedophiles.
  • Not Synced
    Pedophiles are wicked,
  • Not Synced
but you get my drift here?
  • Not Synced
    This is just: show me
  • Not Synced
    what the righteous man is;
  • Not Synced
the wicked man is just not like that.
  • Not Synced
He doesn't have to run around
  • Not Synced
    being an axe murderer.
  • Not Synced
He's just not like the righteous.
  • Not Synced
    You see, there's only
    two categories here, folks.
  • Not Synced
And if you're not in the righteous,
  • Not Synced
    the blessed man category,
  • Not Synced
    you're in the other.
  • Not Synced
You're just not like the righteous.
  • Not Synced
    That's it.
  • Not Synced
    That's the wicked.
  • Not Synced
We need to see this for what it is.
  • Not Synced
    The wicked are not so.
  • Not Synced
    Brethren, this is God's teaching.
  • Not Synced
    That's what Psalm 1 is.
  • Not Synced
What we come to right here -
  • Not Synced
it was spoken by David in the beginning,
  • Not Synced
but this is no invention of man.
  • Not Synced
    This is inspired language.
  • Not Synced
    This is God defining humanity.
  • Not Synced
There are only two alternatives here.
  • Not Synced
    You see it.
  • Not Synced
    Men are so disposed
  • Not Synced
    to think in degrees.
  • Not Synced
    Right?
  • Not Synced
It's not just black or white.
  • Not Synced
We like to think in degrees.
  • Not Synced
    We like to think
  • Not Synced
    somewhere in the middle.
  • Not Synced
    That there's other alternatives.
  • Not Synced
    But we're not given that.
  • Not Synced
There's no middle ground somewhere here.
  • Not Synced
    See, we tend to think,
  • Not Synced
    well, come on, are you
    righteous all the time?
  • Not Synced
Well, you know, I'm a sinner,
  • Not Synced
    but I'm not that bad.
  • Not Synced
    I'm not wicked.
  • Not Synced
So, I'm somewhere in the middle.
  • Not Synced
    Scripture doesn't allow that.
  • Not Synced
We tend to think that way,
  • Not Synced
    but Scripture doesn't allow this
  • Not Synced
    thinking in degrees.
  • Not Synced
    It's pretty radical.
  • Not Synced
Boy, how often does Scripture do this?
  • Not Synced
It's everywhere - in the Old Testament
  • Not Synced
    and in the New. Everywhere!
  • Not Synced
That Scripture comes along and says
  • Not Synced
    Bang! Bang!
  • Not Synced
    Two camps.
  • Not Synced
You're in one or the other.
  • Not Synced
    Radical. No in-between's.
  • Not Synced
That is such the language of Scripture
  • Not Synced
    over and over and over.
  • Not Synced
Only two men in this psalm.
  • Not Synced
    No middle ground.
  • Not Synced
Either you're one or the other.
  • Not Synced
    We're looking at two men.
  • Not Synced
    Just two.
  • Not Synced
    You're like one.
  • Not Synced
    Or you're not so.
  • Not Synced
    So, let's consider this.
  • Not Synced
Let's consider the first four words.
  • Not Synced
    "Blessed is the man..."
  • Not Synced
    I've got five "P's"
  • Not Synced
that I want to use to describe just this.
  • Not Synced
    Blessed is the man.
  • Not Synced
    The first is this.
  • Not Synced
    The first "P": Plurality.
  • Not Synced
    There's a plurality of blessednesses.
  • Not Synced
    Martin Luther points out,
  • Not Synced
and I needed somebody else to tell me this
  • Not Synced
because I can make my way through Greek,
  • Not Synced
    but Hebrew is out there.
  • Not Synced
    Luther says in the Hebrew,
  • Not Synced
    the word "blessed" is plural.
  • Not Synced
    It's literally blessednesses.
  • Not Synced
    All blessednesses are the portion
  • Not Synced
    of this blessed man.
  • Not Synced
    All things are well
  • Not Synced
    with a man like this.
  • Not Synced
    Spurgeon calls it
  • Not Synced
    the multiplicity of blessings.
  • Not Synced
You want to be this guy.
  • Not Synced
    This means everything is good.
  • Not Synced
    Everything is blessed.
  • Not Synced
    Blessednesses.
  • Not Synced
    The second "P" is
  • Not Synced
    the propensity towards blessedness.
  • Not Synced
What do I mean by that?
  • Not Synced
    Propensity.
  • Not Synced
    The desire.
  • Not Synced
    We desire this.
  • Not Synced
    All men desire this.
  • Not Synced
Brethren, as was mentioned by Craig
  • Not Synced
    last week, happy, blessed,
  • Not Synced
    blessed is the man.
  • Not Synced
There are places such as Deuteronomy 33:29:
  • Not Synced
    "Happy are you, O Israel!
  • Not Synced
    Who is like you?
  • Not Synced
A people saved by the Lord."
  • Not Synced
Yes, this word can be translated
  • Not Synced
    directly: "happy."
  • Not Synced
    The happinesses - it's plural.
  • Not Synced
All the happinesses of the man
  • Not Synced
    that's described here.
  • Not Synced
    And here's the thing.
  • Not Synced
    You think with me here.
  • Not Synced
Of all that God could have done
  • Not Synced
in starting out the book of Psalms,
  • Not Synced
    the very first one,
  • Not Synced
    the very first line,
  • Not Synced
He hits us with the thing
  • Not Synced
    that all men have a propensity for;
  • Not Synced
    that all men long after:
  • Not Synced
    happiness.
  • Not Synced
We are all anxious to be blessed.
  • Not Synced
    When we hear Esau,
  • Not Synced
    remember how he was?
  • Not Synced
    With his father Isaac?
  • Not Synced
"Bless me, even me also, O my father!"
  • Not Synced
    Bless me!
  • Not Synced
    That's how we all are.
  • Not Synced
    We want it!
    We want it!
  • Not Synced
See, he was faced with the fact
  • Not Synced
    that he was losing it.
  • Not Synced
    And he was desparate.
  • Not Synced
    Bless me!
  • Not Synced
    We all want that blessing.
  • Not Synced
And you know what gives man
  • Not Synced
even the ability to make it
  • Not Synced
from one day to the next
  • Not Synced
    is hope that ultimately,
  • Not Synced
    he will receive that.
  • Not Synced
    Hell is such hopelessness
  • Not Synced
    because it's all gone.
  • Not Synced
    The blessedness is all gone.
  • Not Synced
    But this is the longing
    of the soul of man.
  • Not Synced
    Right here at the beginning
  • Not Synced
    of the very first psalm.
  • Not Synced
    The third "P":
  • Not Synced
    The positivity of blessedness.
  • Not Synced
    "Blessed is the man."
  • Not Synced
Is. I put stress on "is."
  • Not Synced
It's not just that he will be.
  • Not Synced
    He is.
  • Not Synced
The first psalm is God telling us
  • Not Synced
    that blessedness is not
    just for the future.
  • Not Synced
You can be sitting here right in this room
  • Not Synced
in this world at this time
  • Not Synced
and be a man or woman
  • Not Synced
    of all blessednesses.
  • Not Synced
I mean, you can sit here
  • Not Synced
and be the absolute envy -
  • Not Synced
if the truth were to be known -
  • Not Synced
the absolute envy of all mankind.
  • Not Synced
You have that which all men want.
  • Not Synced
    There's a positivity here.
  • Not Synced
    It's attainable.
  • Not Synced
    In this world, it's attainable.
  • Not Synced
No matter if it's 106 degrees out.
  • Not Synced
    It's attainable.
  • Not Synced
No matter if you're going through trials.
  • Not Synced
    It's attainable.
  • Not Synced
    That's the thing.
  • Not Synced
    Go with David some time
  • Not Synced
    and visit the nursing home.
  • Not Synced
    Or, come with John Sytsma
  • Not Synced
when he goes over to Nepal,
  • Not Synced
and you look at one of these Hindi people
  • Not Synced
    in their seventies or eighties.
  • Not Synced
You look at the old people
  • Not Synced
    there in the nursing home.
  • Not Synced
    Their faces - empty, hollow,
  • Not Synced
    and they're just sad.
  • Not Synced
    Why?
  • Not Synced
    They've lived their lives.
  • Not Synced
    So many promises of happiness.
  • Not Synced
    When we talk about
  • Not Synced
    "blessed is the man,"
  • Not Synced
    they're one in a thousand.
  • Not Synced
You know what the other 999
  • Not Synced
    are doing all the time?
  • Not Synced
The pleasures of sin for a season.
  • Not Synced
And those little pleasures in sin,
  • Not Synced
they're saying, "Try me! You'll be happy!"
  • Not Synced
    "Try me! You'll be happy!"
  • Not Synced
And you're grasping at the wind.
  • Not Synced
    You're grasping at mist.
  • Not Synced
Because there's pleasure for a season
  • Not Synced
    and then it's gone.
  • Not Synced
And you spend a whole life doing that
  • Not Synced
and all these promises of happiness.
  • Not Synced
And you get to the end
  • Not Synced
and their religions haven't done it.
  • Not Synced
Their false gods have not done it.
  • Not Synced
And in all their old age,
    you look at them,
  • Not Synced
    they're miserable.
  • Not Synced
    They're out of their minds.
  • Not Synced
They just cuss and they swear
  • Not Synced
    and they're mean.
  • Not Synced
    You go there.
  • Not Synced
    Isn't that how they are?
  • Not Synced
    Just nasty old people.
  • Not Synced
    Why?
  • Not Synced
    Just hopeless.
  • Not Synced
    They're getting to the end
  • Not Synced
    and everything has proven empty.
  • Not Synced
    It's just emptiness.
  • Not Synced
    Only fear looms before them.
  • Not Synced
    Happiness is one of
    the most elusive things
  • Not Synced
    in this world.
  • Not Synced
You have a world out there chasing it,
  • Not Synced
and few there be that find it.
  • Not Synced
Few actually lay hold on it.
  • Not Synced
    But, the promise here is
  • Not Synced
that there is a blessed man.
  • Not Synced
    It's attainable.
  • Not Synced
    That's the thing.
  • Not Synced
    And oh, brethren,
  • Not Synced
don't we hear it in the
    very blood of Christ.
  • Not Synced
    If anything whispers "blessedness,"
  • Not Synced
    it's that blood.
  • Not Synced
The next "P" - the fourth:
  • Not Synced
    The place of blessedness.
  • Not Synced
    By "place," I mean,
  • Not Synced
where is it to be found?
  • Not Synced
    Notice this:
  • Not Synced
    Look at v. 2.
  • Not Synced
"His delight is in the law of the Lord
  • Not Synced
    and on His law he
    meditates day and night."
  • Not Synced
    Now, brethren, hear me carefully.
  • Not Synced
    There is not a text,
  • Not Synced
    and you won't find it.
  • Not Synced
Never found it in my Bible -
  • Not Synced
not any of the Bibles I've ever owned.
  • Not Synced
You will never find a beatitude that says,
  • Not Synced
blessed is the man who hungers and thirsts
  • Not Synced
    for blessedness.
  • Not Synced
    You won't find it.
  • Not Synced
    It's not there.
  • Not Synced
Where is blessedness to be found?
  • Not Synced
Happiness is not to be found
  • Not Synced
in just seeking to be happy.
  • Not Synced
    Think with me here.
  • Not Synced
    What does this man desire?
  • Not Synced
    The law of the Lord.
  • Not Synced
He meditates on it day and night.
  • Not Synced
    Why? Because it's in
    that he finds his God.
  • Not Synced
    In that he finds life;
  • Not Synced
he finds his Christ, his Messiah.
  • Not Synced
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst
  • Not Synced
    for righteousness.
  • Not Synced
    They will be satisfied.
  • Not Synced
    Brethren, think of this.
  • Not Synced
    Think of this truth.
  • Not Synced
    If you grab for happiness,
  • Not Synced
    you miss it.
  • Not Synced
    It just turns to mist.
  • Not Synced
    It slips away.
  • Not Synced
It's only the man or the woman
  • Not Synced
who actually seek for something else
  • Not Synced
    that find happiness.
  • Not Synced
    Do you notice that?
  • Not Synced
    Or listen to Psalm 119:2.
    Don't turn there, but listen.
  • Not Synced
    "Blessed are those who
    keep His testimonies,
  • Not Synced
who seek Him with their whole heart."
  • Not Synced
    You see?
  • Not Synced
We seek Him. We find blessing.
  • Not Synced
We seek His Word. We find blessing.
  • Not Synced
    We seek His righteousness.
  • Not Synced
    We find blessing.
  • Not Synced
    We seek first the Kingdom.
  • Not Synced
    We find all things.
  • Not Synced
Is that not how Scripture is?
  • Not Synced
    Oh, brethren, that's a principle
    you don't want to lose.
  • Not Synced
    Because men desire blessing.
  • Not Synced
    They desire happiness.
  • Not Synced
    And most miss it,
  • Not Synced
    because they look for
    it in the wrong place.
  • Not Synced
Fifthly, the person of this blessedness.
  • Not Synced
    Blessings and happiness
  • Not Synced
are not tied to the man's circumstances.
  • Not Synced
    You need to see that.
  • Not Synced
See, the world tends to think,
  • Not Synced
    blessed is the man that
    gets a beautiful wife.
  • Not Synced
Blessed is the man that comes into money.
  • Not Synced
    Blessed is the man that
can afford to get that car,
  • Not Synced
    buy that house.
  • Not Synced
    Blessed is the man that
    (fill in the blank).
  • Not Synced
    ...gets the promotion at work.
  • Not Synced
But do you notice nothing in this psalm
  • Not Synced
    has to do with circumstances?
  • Not Synced
    It's the person.
  • Not Synced
It's who he is, not the
    circumstances in his life.
  • Not Synced
    That's critical.
    That's crucial.
  • Not Synced
    Blessings and happiness
  • Not Synced
are tied to who you are,
  • Not Synced
not what's happening in your life.
  • Not Synced
    To who you are.
  • Not Synced
To what your relationship is with God.
  • Not Synced
What your relationship is with the Word.
  • Not Synced
    That's the issue.
  • Not Synced
    Now, there's those five "P's"
  • Not Synced
that have to do with "blessed."
  • Not Synced
    Now, let's just broaden out
  • Not Synced
and think about the whole psalm.
  • Not Synced
    Brethren, hear me carefully.
  • Not Synced
This psalm is an entire indicative.
  • Not Synced
    There's no command here.
  • Not Synced
    Now, I recognize Hebrew doesn't
  • Not Synced
    necessarily have indicative verbs,
  • Not Synced
but in the Greek, in the Septuagint,
  • Not Synced
    that's exactly what it is.
  • Not Synced
    What am I getting at?
  • Not Synced
    You don't want to know
    all about Greek and Hebrew.
  • Not Synced
But what am I getting at?
  • Not Synced
    My point is this:
  • Not Synced
    This psalm doesn't command
    you to do anything.
  • Not Synced
Look. Should you go to this psalm and say,
  • Not Synced
hey, I ought to be more
    disciplined in the Word.
  • Not Synced
You know, when you get indicatives,
  • Not Synced
they do imply, they suggest imperatives.
  • Not Synced
    When you're told a fact,
  • Not Synced
    they do sometimes imply
  • Not Synced
    a responsibility on our part.
  • Not Synced
    That's true.
  • Not Synced
    I don't deny that.
  • Not Synced
And there's many other places where
  • Not Synced
you find this to be a reality.
  • Not Synced
    But hear me carefully.
  • Not Synced
I am not going to preach
    commandments to you here,
  • Not Synced
because this psalm does not do that.
  • Not Synced
This psalm basically lays down facts.
  • Not Synced
    Notice, nothing in this
    psalm is telling you
  • Not Synced
or seeking to encourage you directly
  • Not Synced
to not walk in the counsel of the wicked
  • Not Synced
or to stand in a certain place
  • Not Synced
or to sit in a certain place.
  • Not Synced
    It's not commanding you.
  • Not Synced
    It's not encouraging you
    to be in the Word.
  • Not Synced
It's not encouraging you to be a tree.
  • Not Synced
It's not encouraging you to be fruitful.
  • Not Synced
    Not directly.
  • Not Synced
    You hear what I'm saying.
  • Not Synced
It basically is a statement of fact.
  • Not Synced
You say where are you going?
  • Not Synced
I'll tell you where I'm going.
  • Not Synced
You know the problem too often
  • Not Synced
when you preach a text like this,
  • Not Synced
    is people go away -
  • Not Synced
    especially the wicked -
  • Not Synced
    they go away thinking,
  • Not Synced
oh, I need to do better at that.
  • Not Synced
    That's not what this is.
  • Not Synced
This is a statement of fact.
  • Not Synced
    It's a description.
  • Not Synced
It is God coming along and He's saying
  • Not Synced
    you want to know what
    a righteous man looks like?
  • Not Synced
    Here's what he looks like.
  • Not Synced
You want to know what a wicked man is?
  • Not Synced
    He's not that.
  • Not Synced
    That's basically what's happening.
  • Not Synced
    Make sure you see that.
  • Not Synced
    You say why?
  • Not Synced
    Because this isn't a
    pep rally to do better.
  • Not Synced
    This is a searching.
  • Not Synced
This is a spotlight shining on all of us.
  • Not Synced
    It's not an encouragement
    to go out and strive,
  • Not Synced
or to go out and run better.
  • Not Synced
This is a spotlight shining on you
  • Not Synced
    that proves who you are.
  • Not Synced
    Make sure you see that.
  • Not Synced
The issue is not so much
  • Not Synced
that you need to strive harder,
  • Not Synced
as much as it is the living God telling us
  • Not Synced
what is true of all of us.
  • Not Synced
    So, notice this.
  • Not Synced
    V. 1 is, "Blessed is the man who
  • Not Synced
    walks not..."
  • Not Synced
    The negative.
  • Not Synced
Before you get the positive in v. 2.
  • Not Synced
"His delight is in the law of the Lord."
  • Not Synced
    You get the negative.
  • Not Synced
    The negative is first.
  • Not Synced
    Isn't that similar to -
I think of Isaiah 55 oftentimes.
  • Not Synced
Let the wicked forsake his way,
  • Not Synced
and the unrighteous man his thoughts,
  • Not Synced
and let him return unto the Lord.
  • Not Synced
So you get the negative first:
  • Not Synced
    forsake your way.
  • Not Synced
The positive: return to the Lord.
  • Not Synced
Or when Jesus came in the New Testament.
  • Not Synced
    What did He say?
  • Not Synced
    Repent!
  • Not Synced
Repentance is a change of mind.
  • Not Synced
It is that change of mind about sin,
  • Not Synced
    about Christ.
  • Not Synced
    There's this turning from sin.
  • Not Synced
    There's a reversal in life.
  • Not Synced
There's a forsaking and then believing.
  • Not Synced
Calling upon the Lord in faith.
  • Not Synced
    We often get this negative
  • Not Synced
    before the positive.
  • Not Synced
    Why?
  • Not Synced
You know what the danger is?
  • Not Synced
You come along with just the positive
  • Not Synced
    and people think I need
to tack that on my life.
  • Not Synced
    Nope, that's not it.
  • Not Synced
    That's never how it is.
  • Not Synced
    There's first turning.
  • Not Synced
    There's a forsaking.
  • Not Synced
There's things we step back from.
  • Not Synced
There's things that the blessed man
  • Not Synced
    no longer involves himself in
  • Not Synced
before we get to the positive.
  • Not Synced
    That's the way God often
    does it in Scripture.
  • Not Synced
Man in this world - evil,
  • Not Synced
    he's wrong; he's vile -
  • Not Synced
and God's way is essentially different.
  • Not Synced
    And it's not just you
    staying on your own way,
  • Not Synced
    and your old way,
  • Not Synced
and then tacking on God's way.
  • Not Synced
There is a forsaking of your way.
  • Not Synced
And a coming to God's way.
  • Not Synced
    That's the issue.
  • Not Synced
"Blessed is the man who walks not
  • Not Synced
in the counsel of the wicked,
  • Not Synced
nor stands in the way of sinners."
  • Not Synced
    Not.
  • Not Synced
    Brethren, this is desire
    being described here.
  • Not Synced
    God's not giving a commandment.
  • Not Synced
    There's a desire.
  • Not Synced
And I know, someone says, exactly!
  • Not Synced
    Negative.
  • Not Synced
Of course, that's how it starts out.
  • Not Synced
    That's what Christianity is in
    a lot of people's minds.
  • Not Synced
    Of course, that's exactly
    how Christianity is.
  • Not Synced
    You can't do this.
    You can't do that.
  • Not Synced
    But, brethren, listen to me.
  • Not Synced
This is not a psalm of "thou shalt not's."
  • Not Synced
This is a man who desires the Word of God,
  • Not Synced
    the law of the Lord.
  • Not Synced
This is a man who has a heart
  • Not Synced
    that hungers after this.
  • Not Synced
    He delights in it.
  • Not Synced
And because he delights in that,
  • Not Synced
    he disdains what's against it:
  • Not Synced
    the ways of the world,
  • Not Synced
    the ways of the devil,
  • Not Synced
    the ways that are wrong,
  • Not Synced
    the ways of the scornful,
  • Not Synced
    the ways of the sinner.
  • Not Synced
    They're repulsive to him
  • Not Synced
because he delights in the law of God.
  • Not Synced
    That's the idea.
  • Not Synced
    Brethren, we have to
    get this in our heads.
  • Not Synced
Christianity is not just this set
  • Not Synced
of external laws that tells us
  • Not Synced
don't do this, don't do this...
  • Not Synced
Christianity is a transformation of heart
  • Not Synced
where our delights are now toward the Word
  • Not Synced
    and we don't want that.
  • Not Synced
    There's a distaste.
  • Not Synced
We don't love what we used to love.
  • Not Synced
    Christianity is God changing us
  • Not Synced
    so that we don't desire
  • Not Synced
    the counsel of the ungodly.
  • Not Synced
We delight in the Word of Christ.
  • Not Synced
And brethren, we find His yoke easy.
  • Not Synced
    That's the reality.
  • Not Synced
    Notice the progressiveness
  • Not Synced
    of this first verse.
  • Not Synced
    He doesn't walk in the
    counsel of the wicked.
  • Not Synced
    And then it's "stand."
  • Not Synced
    You've got a man walking,
  • Not Synced
and then it's like the man stops walking
  • Not Synced
    and he stands.
  • Not Synced
    And then the man sits.
  • Not Synced
    It's progressive what?
  • Not Synced
    (Incomplete thought)
  • Not Synced
    It is a digression.
  • Not Synced
It's like there's motion and then he stops
  • Not Synced
    and then he sits.
  • Not Synced
It's like this increasing grip of sin.
  • Not Synced
    This increasing - Lloyd-Jones
    called it paralysis of sin.
  • Not Synced
    The blessed man avoids it.
  • Not Synced
    And what is this?
  • Not Synced
    What does he avoid?
  • Not Synced
You say, the wicked, the sinner,
  • Not Synced
the scoffer... brethren, where are they?
  • Not Synced
    Think about your life.
  • Not Synced
    There's voices,
  • Not Synced
    We have these voices.
  • Not Synced
Things are coming in the eyes
  • Not Synced
and coming in the ears all the time.
  • Not Synced
    We see things.
  • Not Synced
    We hear things.
  • Not Synced
Where are these voices in this world?
  • Not Synced
We have means of commication today
  • Not Synced
like they never had in any other time.
  • Not Synced
Think of the channels through which
  • Not Synced
    these things come.
  • Not Synced
Brethren, you know what they are.
  • Not Synced
    Friends.
  • Not Synced
    How often does Scripture
    speak about companionship?
  • Not Synced
You want to be a fool?
  • Not Synced
    Hang out with the fools.
  • Not Synced
    Plain and simple.
  • Not Synced
    Social media.
  • Not Synced
You can hang out with people.
  • Not Synced
    You spend your time there.
  • Not Synced
Brethren, what kind of voices are these?
  • Not Synced
The wicked, the sinner, the scoffer...
  • Not Synced
    they're voices that take you
  • Not Synced
off of running this race like you should.
  • Not Synced
They're voices that turn us away from God
  • Not Synced
    and godliness.
  • Not Synced
    They scoff. They mock
  • Not Synced
at the ways of the righteous.
  • Not Synced
    They scoff and they mock
  • Not Synced
    at the ways of Scripture.
  • Not Synced
    It's all that's advserse to
  • Not Synced
    and against and radically,
  • Not Synced
    essentially the opposite
  • Not Synced
    of what's in v. 2:
  • Not Synced
Loving the law of the Lord.
  • Not Synced
It's everything that's opposed to that.
  • Not Synced
    It's everything that shuns that.
  • Not Synced
It's everything that smirks at that.
  • Not Synced
    It's everything that
    slights the ways of God.
  • Not Synced
    That's what we're talking about.
  • Not Synced
    What we're talking about here
  • Not Synced
    is the blessed man;
  • Not Synced
is the man who looks at the friends
  • Not Synced
    in his life and says,
  • Not Synced
    you know what?
  • Not Synced
I am not going to spend time
  • Not Synced
    with those people anymore.
  • Not Synced
    Because you know what?
  • Not Synced
I want to spend time in the Word.
  • Not Synced
And there's something in their lives,
  • Not Synced
    there's something in their words
  • Not Synced
    that opposes this.
  • Not Synced
    And I'm not walking there.
  • Not Synced
    And I'm not standing there.
  • Not Synced
    I'm not going to stop
  • Not Synced
and I'm not going to sit.
  • Not Synced
    You see, it's almost more
  • Not Synced
of a progressive stagnation in sin.
  • Not Synced
I'm not going to do it.
  • Not Synced
I'm not going to go there.
  • Not Synced
I'm going to evaluate social media.
  • Not Synced
If that movie is going to take me somehow
  • Not Synced
    away from what pleases God,
  • Not Synced
why am I going to go do that?
  • Not Synced
    Why?
  • Not Synced
    Entertainment?
  • Not Synced
Oh you're going to entertain yourself
  • Not Synced
    by going and standing
  • Not Synced
in the way of the sinner.
  • Not Synced
    Is that it?
  • Not Synced
    You see, the righteous
    man doesn't do that.
  • Not Synced
    Now, brethren, hear me again.
  • Not Synced
I'm not saying, ok, you better size up
  • Not Synced
    what you're doing on Facebook
  • Not Synced
and you better size up what you're doing
  • Not Synced
with the TV and with movies
  • Not Synced
    and with all the technology.
  • Not Synced
    No commandments here.
  • Not Synced
    Listen, brethren, what
    you need to recognize
  • Not Synced
is God is telling you what we are.
  • Not Synced
See, if you're the guy that perpetually
  • Not Synced
has to look at your life and say,
  • Not Synced
    well, I'm massively failing there.
  • Not Synced
Brethren, it's not God telling you
  • Not Synced
you need to get your act straight.
  • Not Synced
It's God telling you who you are.
  • Not Synced
Do you recognize that's what's happening
  • Not Synced
    in this psalm?
  • Not Synced
He's saying look at your life.
  • Not Synced
    If you walk in the way of the ungodly;
  • Not Synced
    if you stand in this place of sinners;
  • Not Synced
you sit there among those who
  • Not Synced
slight the things that are godly -
  • Not Synced
He's telling you what you are.
  • Not Synced
    Because if you say,
  • Not Synced
no my delight is in the Word.
  • Not Synced
Hey, this is all opposed to that.
  • Not Synced
    And see, if you say,
  • Not Synced
    no, I'm a blessed man
  • Not Synced
because I delight in the Word.
  • Not Synced
Ok, there's going to be proof.
  • Not Synced
And the proof on the negative side
  • Not Synced
is what you no longer do.
  • Not Synced
    You see, there's evidence.
  • Not Synced
    That's the point.
  • Not Synced
    This is indicative.
  • Not Synced
This is indicating what is true.
  • Not Synced
I'm not here today to tell you
  • Not Synced
    to clean up your act.
  • Not Synced
    There are definitely texts
  • Not Synced
    that talk about purging
    that out of your life
  • Not Synced
which ought not to be there,
  • Not Synced
and cutting off and gouging out.
  • Not Synced
    No question about that.
  • Not Synced
But brethren, what this is saying to us
  • Not Synced
is not so much that that's
    what you need to do,
  • Not Synced
    it's saying to us,
  • Not Synced
    if you're the blessed man,
  • Not Synced
    that's what you already do.
  • Not Synced
That's already true in your life.
  • Not Synced
    That's already a reality.
  • Not Synced
    Brethren, this is not commandment.
  • Not Synced
    This is fact.
  • Not Synced
God is not admonishing us specifically
  • Not Synced
    to be holier.
  • Not Synced
He's telling us the truth about
  • Not Synced
    what holiness looks like.
  • Not Synced
And that holy man is that blessed man.
  • Not Synced
    He's telling us that if
    you're that blessed man,
  • Not Synced
you're not going to run with
that same crowd you ran with.
  • Not Synced
And you're not going to do the same things
  • Not Synced
on the Internet you used to do.
  • Not Synced
And you're not going to do the same things
  • Not Synced
at the movie theatre you used to do.
  • Not Synced
And you're not going to do the same things
  • Not Synced
    in front of the television.
  • Not Synced
Because these are all the avenues
  • Not Synced
    by which those voices come.
  • Not Synced
You're not going to do the same thing
  • Not Synced
    with family.
  • Not Synced
You're not going to do the
    same thing with friends.
  • Not Synced
    You're not going to do
    the same things with radio.
  • Not Synced
You're not going to do the
same thing with songs and music.
  • Not Synced
    Why?
  • Not Synced
    Because look, you've
    got to bring this home.
  • Not Synced
    The counsel of the wicked,
  • Not Synced
    the way of the sinner,
  • Not Synced
    the seat of the scoffer.
  • Not Synced
    This is real.
  • Not Synced
You have to put familiar faces on this.
  • Not Synced
    This is not just this
    ambiguous thing out there.
  • Not Synced
    This is your life.
    This is my life.
  • Not Synced
    And I'll tell you this,
  • Not Synced
what He's saying is the blessed man
  • Not Synced
is a man who suddenly is not
  • Not Synced
    doing all sorts of things
    that he used to do.
  • Not Synced
And one of the primary rationales,
  • Not Synced
    one of the primary motivations,
  • Not Synced
one of the primary movers in all of this
  • Not Synced
    is not external laws.
  • Not Synced
    It's what he delights in.
  • Not Synced
He now delights in the Word of God.
  • Not Synced
    And so, naturally, if
    you delight in something,
  • Not Synced
you don't delight in that which is opposed
  • Not Synced
to the something that you delight in.
  • Not Synced
    That's the reality here, brethren.
  • Not Synced
    And notice this last one.
  • Not Synced
Because, I think this is key.
  • Not Synced
"Nor sits in the seat of scoffers."
  • Not Synced
You know what a scoffer is?
  • Not Synced
    Or a scorner?
  • Not Synced
    They're somebody who mocks.
  • Not Synced
    And even in the church,
  • Not Synced
    we get those who scorn
  • Not Synced
and they scoff and they mock
  • Not Synced
    and they make light of
  • Not Synced
anyone they see who seems more radical.
  • Not Synced
You know what you get in the church?
  • Not Synced
    You get these people
  • Not Synced
who they want to keep a clear conscience.
  • Not Synced
    And they come to Scripture,
  • Not Synced
    and they see something there,
  • Not Synced
    like they look at modesty
  • Not Synced
and they think what that means
  • Not Synced
is I need to wear a dress that's down
  • Not Synced
    to the floor.
  • Not Synced
    And you know what?
  • Not Synced
    They're not being legalistic.
  • Not Synced
    They're not coming along
  • Not Synced
    and they're not pressing
    that on you and me.
  • Not Synced
They look at Scripture and they say
  • Not Synced
don't set anything that's vain or useless
  • Not Synced
    before my eyes.
  • Not Synced
And they say, you know what?
  • Not Synced
I think TV altogether is vain and useless.
  • Not Synced
And so they're seeking to do it.
  • Not Synced
    And if you're the guy
    that's always out there
  • Not Synced
    saying legalism, legalism, legalism!
  • Not Synced
You're likely in the seat of that scoffer.
  • Not Synced
    When you look at people
  • Not Synced
who are trying to keep a clear conscience
  • Not Synced
    and they're eradicating things,
  • Not Synced
and they say my eye offends,
  • Not Synced
and so I'm getting rid of that.
  • Not Synced
    I'm tearing it out and
    I'm casting it from me.
  • Not Synced
    And they're people of conscience.
  • Not Synced
And they're walking through their life
  • Not Synced
and they're going to the Word
  • Not Synced
and they delight in the Word
  • Not Synced
and they're looking in the Word
  • Not Synced
and they're saying my conscience says
  • Not Synced
oh, look what I find here.
  • Not Synced
Now look, you may look at them and say,
  • Not Synced
    you know what?
  • Not Synced
    Their conscience has not been
  • Not Synced
    most accurately informed,
  • Not Synced
because if you think about other places
  • Not Synced
    in Scripture...
  • Not Synced
And you know what, that may be true,
  • Not Synced
    but don't mock and don't
    slight at such people
  • Not Synced
who are trying to keep clear consciences
  • Not Synced
    before God.
  • Not Synced
    And they're meticulous
  • Not Synced
    and they're diligent.
  • Not Synced
I remember one time when I was down
  • Not Synced
    at Stockdale,
  • Not Synced
and a woman came and she had been
  • Not Synced
wearing a head convering before that,
  • Not Synced
    and then she wasn't
    wearing the head covering.
  • Not Synced
I said where's your head covering?
  • Not Synced
    Did you study Scripture and
  • Not Synced
    you came to another conclusion?
  • Not Synced
She said, no, just because the people here
  • Not Synced
    don't wear them.
  • Not Synced
    I said you better get
    that thing on your head.
  • Not Synced
    Why? Because she thought
  • Not Synced
that's what the Lord wants her to do.
  • Not Synced
And if that's what you think the Lord
  • Not Synced
    wants you to do,
  • Not Synced
    and whether it comes down
  • Not Synced
to how you raise your children
  • Not Synced
or how you love your wife
  • Not Synced
or how you drive your car,
  • Not Synced
or what you do at work -
  • Not Synced
brethren, Spurgeon said it one time:
  • Not Synced
better to live according to this Word -
  • Not Synced
    how you interpret it
  • Not Synced
    and be wrong,
  • Not Synced
    than to not do that.
  • Not Synced
    You understand what he's saying.
  • Not Synced
He's not saying bad doctrine's good.
  • Not Synced
He's saying you need to live up
  • Not Synced
to the light of the lamp that is
  • Not Synced
shining at your feet from this book.
  • Not Synced
And how you look at it -
  • Not Synced
it's not what everybody else is doing.
  • Not Synced
You do what you believe that God
  • Not Synced
wants you to do from that book.
  • Not Synced
    And you seek to live
    with a clear conscience.
  • Not Synced
And you know who the scoffer is?
  • Not Synced
    They're the people always shouting
  • Not Synced
    "legalism" in the church.
  • Not Synced
    Oh, that's legalistic.
  • Not Synced
    They're just legalists.
  • Not Synced
    You be careful.
  • Not Synced
    You just be careful.
  • Not Synced
    Because I tell you what,
  • Not Synced
if you're that person who's always looking
  • Not Synced
and you're looking down your nose
  • Not Synced
    at other people who are
  • Not Synced
really trying to walk before the Lord,
  • Not Synced
    and they're trying to walk
  • Not Synced
    with a clear conscience,
  • Not Synced
and they're trying to please Him
  • Not Synced
and they're trying to be meticulous
  • Not Synced
    to God's Word -
  • Not Synced
    you look at them and
    you call them legalists -
  • Not Synced
    you have been sitting
in the seat of the scoffer.
  • Not Synced
    Let me tell you.
  • Not Synced
I'm not telling you don't do that.
  • Not Synced
    Repent of that.
  • Not Synced
Of course, there's a place for that.
  • Not Synced
What I'm telling you is this:
  • Not Synced
What God is doing is showing
    you who you are.
  • Not Synced
Not what you ought to be.
  • Not Synced
He's showing you who you are.
