  • 11:49 - 11:51
of all these names being listed down,
  • 11:51 - 11:52
    and so you can see
  • 11:52 - 11:54
that it was a community covenant
  • 11:54 - 11:55
    between God and His people.
  • 11:55 - 11:59
    (Derek) You've got Nehemiah there,
    certainly, right,
  • 11:59 - 12:05
and then you've got Zedekiah and Seraiah.
  • 12:05 - 12:08
    I'm assuming, as the list
    is being written,
  • 12:08 - 12:10
    that someone says...?
  • 12:10 - 12:11
    (Team) "Me, too."
  • 12:11 - 12:13
    (Derek) "Me, too," right,
  • 12:13 - 12:15
    "add my name," right? Travis?
  • 12:15 - 12:16
    (Travis) You know, when we
  • 12:16 - 12:17
    sign agreements nowadays,
  • 12:17 - 12:19
we do that so there's accountability,
  • 12:19 - 12:20
so they can't go back and say,
  • 12:20 - 12:22
"Well, you know, I never said that."
  • 12:22 - 12:25
When you put something in writing,
  • 12:25 - 12:28
    you know, it's an accountability,
    it's official.
  • 12:28 - 12:30
(Derek) So, back to the marriage
  • 12:30 - 12:32
    or courting relationship,
  • 12:32 - 12:35
if someone says, "Well, I'd like
  • 12:35 - 12:36
    to move in with you,
  • 12:36 - 12:37
but I'm not ready to make
  • 12:37 - 12:40
    a formal agreement...
  • 12:40 - 12:43
    (Evelyn) Commitment.
  • 12:43 - 12:45
    (Derek) What would you say
    to them, Evelyn?
  • 12:45 - 12:47
(Evelyn) I would say you guys
  • 12:47 - 12:48
need to do it the way
  • 12:48 - 12:51
    the Lord commands us to,
  • 12:51 - 12:53
I mean, to show commitment to one another.
  • 12:53 - 12:55
    (Derek) That's true. Yes, Jason.
  • 12:55 - 12:57
    (Jason) I would say that's
    kind of like cheating.
  • 12:57 - 12:58
You're trying to get the benefits
  • 12:58 - 13:00
of the situation without the commitment.
  • 13:00 - 13:02
(Derek) And the truth is, it won't work
  • 13:02 - 13:03
    because there's no...?
  • 13:03 - 13:05
    (Team) Commitment.
  • 13:05 - 13:06
    (Derek) There's no commitment, right?
  • 13:06 - 13:10
Now, having listed these primary signers,
  • 13:10 - 13:11
    I mean, we can think
  • 13:11 - 13:12
    of other primary documents
  • 13:12 - 13:14
    where there are the signers
  • 13:14 - 13:15
    whose names are on there,
  • 13:15 - 13:17
    let's take a look, Gladys,
  • 13:17 - 13:20
    at verses 28 and 29,
  • 13:20 - 13:22
    something that Nehemiah adds
  • 13:22 - 13:24
    after that list of names.
  • 13:24 - 13:25
    (Gladys) I'm reading
  • 13:25 - 13:27
    from the New International Version,
  • 13:27 - 13:32
    Nehemiah, chapter 10, verses 28 and 29:
  • 14:09 - 14:11
    (Derek) So, what's the significance
  • 14:11 - 14:12
    of that little add-on
  • 14:12 - 14:14
    to the list of names?
  • 14:14 - 14:16
    (Harold) Total commitment.
  • 14:16 - 14:17
    (Derek) Total commitment.
  • 14:17 - 14:20
(Harold) It wasn't just the leaders
    because we can't forget
  • 14:20 - 14:23
    the names listed in verses 1 through 27;
    these were the leaders,
  • 14:23 - 14:26
which actually they were supposed to teach
    and impart this message.
  • 14:26 - 14:28
But at the same time, the people,
  • 14:28 - 14:30
were like, "We want to be followers, too."
  • 14:30 - 14:32
(Derek) Right? The rest of the people.
  • 14:32 - 14:35
In fact, we find that phrase
  • 14:35 - 14:38
toward the end of verse 29,
  • 14:38 - 14:39
    or verse 28, excuse me,
  • 14:39 - 14:43
    "everyone who had knowledge
    and understanding."
  • 14:43 - 14:44
    What does that mean?
  • 14:44 - 14:45
    We had that when Ezra
  • 14:45 - 14:47
was reading, too, the Word, right?
  • 14:47 - 14:50
    What does that mean?
  • 14:50 - 14:51
    Even the little ones
  • 14:51 - 14:53
    who could understand, right?
  • 14:53 - 14:56
    They said, "Me, too, papa,"
  • 14:56 - 14:59
"Me, too, mama, add my name
    to that list.
  • 14:59 - 15:02
I want to be named with the people of God
  • 15:02 - 15:05
who are making this covenant with God."
  • 15:05 - 15:07
    So, like Harold said,
  • 15:07 - 15:11
    it's, like, a total commitment,
  • 15:11 - 15:12
    a total commitment.
  • 15:12 - 15:17
Now, how did the witness of the leaders
  • 15:17 - 15:19
influence the rest of the people?
  • 15:19 - 15:23
    We don't know, do we?
  • 15:23 - 15:25
Is there a correlation sometimes, John,
  • 15:25 - 15:28
between the leader, even in a family,
  • 15:28 - 15:30
    and where the family goes?
  • 15:30 - 15:32
(John) They often set the example,
  • 15:32 - 15:35
and they set the tone for the family
  • 15:35 - 15:37
or those that they are leading.
  • 15:37 - 15:39
(Derek) So, you've got two key leaders,
  • 15:39 - 15:41
    namely Ezra and...?
  • 15:41 - 15:42
    (Team) Nehemiah.
  • 15:42 - 15:43
    (Derek) who are saying,
  • 15:43 - 15:45
    "We're going to follow God.
  • 15:45 - 15:47
This is what God wants us to do.
  • 15:47 - 15:49
They both sacrificed in order to do that.
  • 15:49 - 15:51
Now the other leaders are coming,
  • 15:51 - 15:53
and now all of the people,
  • 15:53 - 15:54
    a total commitment,
  • 15:54 - 15:55
    "Let's make a covenant,"
  • 15:55 - 15:57
make an agreement, "with God." Stephanie.
  • 15:57 - 15:59
(Stephanie) I guess, what came to my mind
  • 15:59 - 16:01
was that each person has to make
  • 16:01 - 16:02
    their own individual commitment.
  • 16:02 - 16:03
    So, even though the leaders
  • 16:03 - 16:05
    are making the commitment,
  • 16:05 - 16:06
    each individual also had
  • 16:06 - 16:07
    to make their own commitment.
  • 16:07 - 16:10
(Derek) Now, it said, "those who
    have understanding."
  • 16:10 - 16:11
    What about the tiny ones?
  • 16:11 - 16:14
    How is their destiny determined,
  • 16:14 - 16:18
    the ones without understanding yet?
  • 16:18 - 16:21
    (Team) The parents.
  • 16:21 - 16:23
    (Derek) It was the same
  • 16:23 - 16:24
    in the time of Noah.
  • 16:24 - 16:26
It was the same, you know,
  • 16:26 - 16:27
    you think of other times
  • 16:27 - 16:30
when people had decisions to make.
  • 16:30 - 16:32
    The Exodus, you know,
  • 16:32 - 16:33
"Are we going to go out?"
  • 16:33 - 16:34
    The little ones, they don't
  • 16:34 - 16:37
    make that choice, do they?
  • 16:37 - 16:38
    At that point, their destiny
  • 16:38 - 16:40
    is very much impacted
  • 16:40 - 16:41
by the decision of their parents.
  • 16:41 - 16:43
    It's a solemn responsibility, right?
  • 16:43 - 16:46
So, we're going to pause for a moment now.
  • 16:46 - 16:49
    We've seen this important juncture,
  • 16:49 - 16:52
crossroads, for the people of God
  • 16:52 - 16:54
there in the time of Ezra and Nehemiah,
  • 16:54 - 16:56
"We're going to renew our commitment,
  • 16:56 - 16:57
    our covenant, with God."
  • 16:57 - 16:58
    But there had been times
  • 16:58 - 17:00
    down through sacred history
  • 17:00 - 17:02
    when God has made covenants,
  • 17:02 - 17:04
    or agreements, with people,
  • 17:04 - 17:06
and we're just going to take a moment
  • 17:06 - 17:07
to look at some of those.
  • 17:07 - 17:09
Some of them might seem massive,
  • 17:09 - 17:11
and some are rather small, but there are
  • 17:11 - 17:14
at least two people in the agreement,
  • 17:14 - 17:16
and they're both agreeing to it,
  • 17:16 - 17:17
    and it has implications.
  • 17:17 - 17:21
So, anybody, give me some examples
  • 17:21 - 17:26
of other covenants. Anybody? Yes, Evelyn?
  • 17:26 - 17:27
    (Evelyn) There's the covenant
  • 17:27 - 17:28
    God had with Adam.
  • 17:28 - 17:30
(Derek) All right, let's look at that
  • 17:30 - 17:34
in the book of Genesis, chapter 3,
  • 17:34 - 17:35
    a covenant with Adam.
  • 17:35 - 17:37
Again, a covenant is a what?
  • 17:37 - 17:38
    (Team) An agreement.
  • 17:38 - 17:39
    (Derek) It's an agreement, okay.
  • 17:39 - 17:42
So let's see, the words spoken
  • 17:42 - 17:46
    in verse 15 are actually
  • 17:46 - 17:49
    spoken to the serpent,
  • 17:49 - 17:52
but it is describing a covenant
  • 17:52 - 17:54
    with the human family.
  • 17:54 - 17:55
So would you read verse 15 for us,
  • 17:55 - 17:59
and then also if you would add verse 21.
  • 17:59 - 18:01
(Evelyn) And I will be reading
  • 18:01 - 18:03
from the New Living Translation; it says:
  • 18:15 - 18:17
    Verse 21 says:
  • 18:22 - 18:24
(Derek) So, what does that promise
  • 18:24 - 18:26
in verse 15, that God is not
  • 18:26 - 18:28
going to abandon the human family -
  • 18:28 - 18:31
He's making a promise to them, right,
  • 18:31 - 18:32
    that He's going to provide
  • 18:32 - 18:34
a way of salvation for them -
  • 18:34 - 18:36
and verse 21, why are those two related?
  • 18:36 - 18:39
    Help me, someone. John?
  • 18:39 - 18:41
(John) These are linked because verse 15
  • 18:41 - 18:44
gives the promise of the Messiah to come,
  • 18:44 - 18:46
and here you have that they
  • 18:46 - 18:47
    are clothed with skin.
  • 18:47 - 18:49
That means that there was a sacrifice
  • 18:49 - 18:51
    that took place for them
  • 18:51 - 18:53
    to receive skins or covering.
  • 18:53 - 18:56
(Derek) And that's not described there
    in chapter 3.
  • 18:56 - 18:58
    In chapter 4, you've got
  • 18:58 - 19:00
    Abel bringing the lamb.
  • 19:00 - 19:02
    Cain, in rebellion, bringing
  • 19:02 - 19:04
    some fruit from his garden.
  • 19:04 - 19:05
    So obviously this idea
  • 19:05 - 19:08
    of a lamb pointing forward
  • 19:08 - 19:10
all the way to the Lamb of God, Jesus,
  • 19:10 - 19:12
who will take away the sin of the world,
  • 19:12 - 19:13
    had been explained to them.
  • 19:13 - 19:15
    Now, did you ever think
  • 19:15 - 19:16
(my wife was sharing this with me
  • 19:16 - 19:18
    just a few days ago),
  • 19:18 - 19:22
    does that mean that God
  • 19:22 - 19:24
    offered the first sacrifice
  • 19:24 - 19:28
    to show them the cost
  • 19:28 - 19:30
and also the sign of looking forward?
  • 19:30 - 19:34
And if that's true, was that
  • 19:34 - 19:37
    the first time in eternity
  • 19:37 - 19:43
that God had caused any form of death?
  • 19:43 - 19:46
    That's a solemn thought, isn't it?
  • 19:46 - 19:48
    And yet, the agreement is,
  • 19:48 - 19:51
    if you trust My promise,
  • 19:51 - 19:53
    I will save you, right?
  • 19:53 - 19:55
And not just you but your children.
  • 19:55 - 19:57
Well, we could spend a lot of time there.
  • 19:57 - 20:00
    We may get a thousand emails;
    you go, "Really?"
  • 20:00 - 20:02
Or did God just tell Adam,
  • 20:02 - 20:04
    "You kill the lamb'"?
  • 20:04 - 20:06
    Maybe God told Adam?
  • 20:06 - 20:07
    We'll hear from you.
  • 20:07 - 20:08
What do you think, by the way?
  • 20:08 - 20:10
    It was certainly not
  • 20:10 - 20:11
    within the heart of God
  • 20:11 - 20:13
to witness any death, was it?
  • 20:13 - 20:14
    God wanted all things
  • 20:14 - 20:17
    to be in perfect harmony.
  • 20:17 - 20:19
We'll get some emails, I'm sure.
  • 20:19 - 20:21
Yeah, I see you thinking. Gladys?
  • 20:21 - 20:22
    (Gladys) Yes, the covenant
  • 20:22 - 20:24
    that God made with Noah.
  • 20:24 - 20:26
(Derek) Okay, let's take a look at that.
  • 20:26 - 20:27
Of course, you know the story
  • 20:27 - 20:29
of Noah starts in Genesis 6,
  • 20:29 - 20:32
but let's take a look at Genesis 9.
  • 20:32 - 20:33
    Perhaps you could read that
  • 20:33 - 20:37
for us, Gladys, verses 8 through 11.
  • 20:37 - 20:39
    (Gladys) Sure, I'll be reading
  • 20:39 - 20:41
    from the New International Version,
  • 20:41 - 20:44
    Genesis 9, verses 8 to 11:
  • 21:21 - 21:23
    (Derek) So, that's God part
  • 21:23 - 21:24
    of the covenant, a promise,
  • 21:24 - 21:27
and He gives the sign of that with what?
  • 21:27 - 21:27
    (Team) A rainbow.
  • 21:27 - 21:31
    (Derek) So, what's their part
    of the covenant?
  • 21:31 - 21:32
    What does He ask them
  • 21:32 - 21:34
to do to enter into it?
  • 21:34 - 21:35
    (John) Trust Him.
  • 21:35 - 21:37
(Derek) To just trust Him, that's right.
  • 21:37 - 21:40
You say, "That's not very much,"
  • 21:40 - 21:43
but actually it's the very essence,
    isn't it,
  • 21:43 - 21:46
    of trusting in the immeasurable
    and unfailing love of God.
  • 21:46 - 21:48
    One more, another covenant. Brittany.
  • 21:48 - 21:49
    (Brittany) I think of Abraham
  • 21:49 - 21:51
    when he was called Abram.
  • 21:51 - 21:53
God promised him that He would make
  • 21:53 - 21:55
his descendants like the stars of the sky.
  • 21:55 - 21:57
(Derek) When his name was Abram,
  • 21:57 - 21:58
    and I'll have you read
  • 21:58 - 22:00
chapter 12 for us, of Genesis, 1 to 3,
  • 22:00 - 22:01
    when his name was Abram,
  • 22:01 - 22:02
how many children did he have?
  • 22:02 - 22:03
    (Team) None.
  • 22:03 - 22:05
(Derek) And how old was he at that time?
  • 22:05 - 22:07
Oh, can you remember that? Was he...?
  • 22:07 - 22:11
    Seventy-five years old, right?
  • 22:11 - 22:13
Well, let's take a look, Brittany,
  • 22:13 - 22:15
    in chapter 12, verses 1 to 3.
  • 22:15 - 22:17
And then we could look at many others,
  • 22:17 - 22:18
but I'm going to ask you
  • 22:18 - 22:19
    what you've noticed
  • 22:19 - 22:21
they all have in common so far.
  • 22:21 - 22:22
    (Brittany) I'll be reading
  • 22:22 - 22:23
from the New King James Version,
  • 22:23 - 22:26
    Genesis, chapter 12, verses 1 through 3:
  • 22:51 - 22:53
(Derek) Now, that's a beautiful promise.
  • 22:53 - 22:55
By the way, if you look
  • 22:55 - 22:57
at the family tree of Jesus,
    get to Matthew,
  • 22:57 - 22:59
He's a son of Abraham, right?
  • 22:59 - 23:01
Because the, "In you, all the families
  • 23:01 - 23:05
of the earth will be blessed," is also...?
  • 23:05 - 23:07
A prophecy pointing forward to Messiah
  • 23:07 - 23:09
just like the lamb is a prophecy
  • 23:09 - 23:12
    pointing forward to Messiah, right?
  • 23:12 - 23:14
    "In you all the nations..."
  • 23:14 - 23:16
We have to look at one more, Moses,
  • 23:16 - 23:18
the covenant made with Moses and Israel.
  • 23:18 - 23:21
If someone could look in Exodus 19,
  • 23:21 - 23:23
    verses 4 through 6.
  • 23:23 - 23:26
    Exodus 19, Jason, if you
  • 23:26 - 23:28
could read verses 4 through 6,
  • 23:28 - 23:31
what does the Word say there?
  • 23:31 - 23:32
    (Jason) I'll be reading
  • 23:32 - 23:34
from the New King James Version,
  • 23:34 - 23:37
    Exodus, chapter 19, verses 4 through 6:
  • 24:08 - 24:09
    (Derek) So, now God's making
  • 24:09 - 24:13
    a covenant with Moses and...?
    All of Israel.
  • 24:13 - 24:14
What do you see that all
  • 24:14 - 24:16
of these covenants have in common?
  • 24:16 - 24:18
We could look at more, too,
  • 24:18 - 24:19
    but what do you see
  • 24:19 - 24:20
that they have in common, Harold?
  • 24:20 - 24:22
    (Harold) God is the Initiator.
  • 24:22 - 24:23
    (Derek) Okay.
  • 24:23 - 24:24
    (Harold) He starts the covenant.
  • 24:24 - 24:26
    (Derek) Very important, God is
    the Initiator,
  • 24:26 - 24:27
    and what's motivating Him?
  • 24:27 - 24:28
    (Team) Love.
  • 24:28 - 24:29
    (Derek) That's right.
  • 24:29 - 24:31
    He doesn't need, like,
  • 24:31 - 24:32
"And I really need your help
  • 24:32 - 24:34
to build this city of...," whatever,"
  • 24:34 - 24:37
you know, like the Egyptians, right.
  • 24:37 - 24:40
No, it's just motivated by love.
  • 24:40 - 24:42
He's like, "I want to bless you.
  • 24:42 - 24:44
    Can we make an agreement?"
  • 24:44 - 24:47
In fact, all of the sacrifice
  • 24:47 - 24:50
    is coming from Him.
  • 24:50 - 24:52
Anything else that you're noticing? John?
  • 24:52 - 24:54
(John) It appears that in each
    of the covenants,
  • 24:54 - 24:55
    it's based on what God
  • 24:55 - 24:57
    has done or will do,
  • 24:57 - 25:01
so, based on His actions and His doing.
  • 25:01 - 25:04
    (Derek) So, trusting Him
  • 25:04 - 25:05
because we've seen what He's done
  • 25:05 - 25:08
    in the past, maybe?
  • 25:08 - 25:10
Abram must have had some confidence
  • 25:10 - 25:12
in God's leading in his past. Nicole?
  • 25:12 - 25:14
(Nicole) It's all based on us trusting.
  • 25:14 - 25:16
He doesn't ask us to do anything.
  • 25:16 - 25:18
He said, "I'm going to do
    everything for you,
  • 25:18 - 25:20
if you can just trust Me and accept it,
  • 25:20 - 25:21
    then that's the covenant."
  • 25:21 - 25:22
    (Derek) It's almost like
  • 25:22 - 25:24
    they're about to set off
  • 25:24 - 25:25
    this nuclear explosion,
  • 25:25 - 25:31
"Here's the shelter; just come in," right?
  • 25:31 - 25:33
"My love has provided for you,
  • 25:33 - 25:34
    just enter in." Harold?
  • 25:34 - 25:35
    (Harold) I wanted to add
  • 25:35 - 25:36
    that all these covenants
  • 25:36 - 25:38
have to do with a relationship.
  • 25:38 - 25:40
    It's always about this relationship,
  • 25:40 - 25:42
    entering this harmonious relationship
    with God,
  • 25:42 - 25:45
because the part, as it's been mentioned,
    is the trust.
  • 25:45 - 25:47
When you trust, you're willing to obey.
  • 25:47 - 25:48
You're like, "Oh, yes, I love You.
  • 25:48 - 25:49
    I want to do this,"
  • 25:49 - 25:51
    because, again, I believe John
  • 25:51 - 25:53
    said that we love Him
  • 25:53 - 25:54
    because He first loved us.
  • 25:54 - 25:56
    (Derek) That's right.
  • 25:56 - 25:57
So, we're going to go now
  • 25:57 - 25:58
    to a beautiful statement
  • 25:58 - 26:01
of what is called the New Covenant,
  • 26:01 - 26:03
    but it's another revelation
  • 26:03 - 26:06
    of the immeasurable and unfailing
    love of God
  • 26:06 - 26:10
in Jeremiah, chapter 31, verses 31 to 34.
  • 26:10 - 26:13
Stephanie, if you could read that for us.
  • 26:13 - 26:15
    (Stephanie) And I'll be reading
  • 26:15 - 26:16
    from the King James Version:
  • 27:19 - 27:21
    (Derek) Now, that expression,
  • 27:21 - 27:24
    "They shall all know Me,"
  • 27:24 - 27:26
    what does that mean?
  • 27:26 - 27:29
    Anybody know? The Hebrew understanding
  • 27:29 - 27:32
    of that "knowing." Yes, Gladys.
  • 27:32 - 27:34
    (Gladys) It's an intimate relationship.
  • 27:34 - 27:36
    (Derek) That's right; it's actually
  • 27:36 - 27:37
    the same word where Adam
  • 27:37 - 27:39
knew his wife, Eve, and she conceived
  • 27:39 - 27:41
    and bore a child, right?
  • 27:41 - 27:45
So it's that close, intimate relationship,
  • 27:45 - 27:49
and that's God's ideal, for how many?
  • 27:49 - 27:50
    (Team) For all of us.
  • 27:50 - 27:51
    (Derek) Yeah, that everyone
  • 27:51 - 27:53
(we won't need to go and say...),
  • 27:53 - 27:55
    that all will experience
  • 27:55 - 27:56
    that intimate relationship.
  • 27:56 - 27:59
    What do you hear different...
  • 27:59 - 28:00
    The Lord Himself says,
  • 28:00 - 28:02
"This is not like the covenant
  • 28:02 - 28:05
    I made with their fathers
  • 28:05 - 28:07
the day I brought them out of Egypt."
  • 28:07 - 28:10
    What's different in this covenant,
  • 28:10 - 28:12
the wording of this New Covenant? Jason?
  • 28:12 - 28:14
    (Jason) There is some description
  • 28:14 - 28:15
    about putting the Law
  • 28:15 - 28:17
in their hearts and in their minds.
  • 28:17 - 28:19
And in the sort of previous covenant,
  • 28:19 - 28:23
there was a lot of external activity
    written down.
  • 28:23 - 28:25
And so there's something kind of happening
  • 28:25 - 28:27
    more internal here, it seems.
  • 28:27 - 28:29
    (Derek) Okay, yes, you're
    absolutely right.
  • 28:29 - 28:31
Let's expand on that a little. Travis?
  • 28:31 - 28:33
    (Travis) I'd like to say
  • 28:33 - 28:35
that this New Covenant was based
  • 28:35 - 28:39
on God's promise to change us
  • 28:39 - 28:40
    internally, like you said,
  • 28:40 - 28:42
    but the first covenant was,
  • 28:42 - 28:43
"I promise, if you do this,"
  • 28:43 - 28:45
    and this promise was based
  • 28:45 - 28:47
just on God's promise, which never fails.
  • 28:47 - 28:50
Man failed in keeping the covenant,
  • 28:50 - 28:52
    and God says, "I'm going
  • 28:52 - 28:53
    to do something within you
  • 28:53 - 28:54
    so that you can keep
  • 28:54 - 28:56
    this covenant with me.
  • 28:56 - 28:58
    (Derek) All right, so, again,
    more internal.
  • 28:58 - 29:01
    Were there any other covenants
  • 29:01 - 29:03
that talked about, "I will forgive
    their iniquities
  • 29:03 - 29:05
and remember their sins no more"?
  • 29:05 - 29:07
    (Team) No.
  • 29:07 - 29:08
    (Derek) I suppose you could
  • 29:08 - 29:09
go back to Genesis and say
  • 29:09 - 29:12
that by trusting in the sacrifice.
  • 29:12 - 29:14
    This is much more explicit,
    though, isn't it?
  • 29:14 - 29:16
"And I'm going to do something..."?
  • 29:16 - 29:18
    "...in their hearts," right?
  • 29:18 - 29:22
"I'm going to change their hearts."
  • 29:22 - 29:23
So, what are your thoughts about God
  • 29:23 - 29:25
wanting to do that for you?
  • 29:25 - 29:27
    Because that's not just written
  • 29:27 - 29:30
in the time of Jeremiah, right?
  • 29:30 - 29:33
That covenant is a covenant He wants
  • 29:33 - 29:36
to make with each one of us, right?
  • 29:36 - 29:38
Give me a new heart, forgive my sins,
  • 29:38 - 29:40
    give me a new start,
  • 29:40 - 29:43
what are your thoughts about that?
    Yes, Alex.
  • 29:43 - 29:45
(Alex) It's just really humbling to me.
  • 29:45 - 29:46
I think of all the things
  • 29:46 - 29:48
that I've done to hurt Him,
  • 29:48 - 29:49
the things I still do to hurt Him,
  • 29:49 - 29:51
and that He wants to have
  • 29:51 - 29:52
    a covenant with me,
  • 29:52 - 29:55
that He still wants to reach out to me
    to have it.
  • 29:55 - 29:57
(Derek) So, back to what we said earlier.
  • 29:57 - 30:00
    Again, He's taking the initiative
    (always, right),
  • 30:00 - 30:01
    and it's based on His...?
  • 30:01 - 30:02
    (Team) Love.
  • 30:02 - 30:04
    (Derek) His immeasurable, unfailing love.
  • 30:04 - 30:07
And Alex says that's kind of humbling
  • 30:07 - 30:10
because He knows me, right? Nicole?
  • 30:10 - 30:11
    (Nicole) It's encouraging also,
  • 30:11 - 30:14
that, even when I fall, He's still there
    to pick me up,
  • 30:14 - 30:17
and He still wants to be with me.
  • 30:17 - 30:18
    It's kind of self-esteem booster
  • 30:18 - 30:20
that this God of the universe
  • 30:20 - 30:21
    wants little 'ole me
  • 30:21 - 30:23
to be in the covenant with Him.
  • 30:23 - 30:25
(Derek) And if it was a human being,
  • 30:25 - 30:26
    you might say, "Well,
  • 30:26 - 30:27
    that's because they don't
  • 30:27 - 30:29
    really know me," right?
  • 30:29 - 30:30
    But He does! John?
  • 30:30 - 30:32
(John) The terms of the covenant,
  • 30:32 - 30:34
and there are terms of agreement,
  • 30:34 - 30:37
and God says that He will complete them,
  • 30:37 - 30:41
    so He's fulfilling those terms
    in our lives,
  • 30:41 - 30:45
and it's to us to receive and believe in.
  • 30:45 - 30:46
    (Derek) All right. Adison?
  • 30:46 - 30:49
(Adison) I just love this concept,
  • 30:49 - 30:51
in part because that same Law
  • 30:51 - 30:53
that was written on the tables of stone,
  • 30:53 - 30:54
    the Holy Spirit takes it,
  • 30:54 - 30:55
    and He engraves it
  • 30:55 - 30:57
upon the tables of our hearts.
  • 30:57 - 31:02
    And we find Christ's righteousness,
    not our own;
  • 31:02 - 31:06
He puts His righteousness on us.
  • 31:06 - 31:08
And I just think it's a tremendous gift.
  • 31:08 - 31:09
    (Derek) And it's important
  • 31:09 - 31:10
    to "rememberize," to remember
  • 31:10 - 31:12
    ("rememberize," that's not
    an English word),
  • 31:12 - 31:15
    to remember what Jesus said,
  • 31:15 - 31:16
that all of that Law He wants
  • 31:16 - 31:18
to write on our hearts is summarized
  • 31:18 - 31:20
    in two great commandments, right?
  • 31:20 - 31:23
    Because, remember, this is
    all about wanting
  • 31:23 - 31:25
an intimate love relationship with us,
  • 31:25 - 31:28
    and those two great commandments,
  • 31:28 - 31:29
    Jesus said, are...?
  • 31:29 - 31:30
    (Team) Love God.
  • 31:30 - 31:31
    (Derek) Love God how?
  • 31:31 - 31:34
    With all your heart, soul,
    mind and strength.
  • 31:34 - 31:35
    And love your neighbor...?
  • 31:35 - 31:37
    (Team) As yourself.
  • 31:37 - 31:38
    (Derek) It's in the context
  • 31:38 - 31:39
    of that relationship.
  • 31:39 - 31:41
All right, Travis, how do you feel
  • 31:41 - 31:42
about, God's like, "I want to make
  • 31:42 - 31:44
    this covenant with you"?
  • 31:44 - 31:45
    (Travis) I just think
  • 31:45 - 31:49
that, when we look at the new covenant,
  • 31:49 - 31:51
it just shows how relentless God is,
  • 31:51 - 31:53
because He's doing something in us
  • 31:53 - 31:55
    that we couldn't do ourselves.
  • 31:55 - 31:57
What God is doing to us
  • 31:57 - 31:59
is He's enabling us to be
  • 31:59 - 32:00
    a part of His Kingdom,
  • 32:00 - 32:01
    something that was
  • 32:01 - 32:03
    just absolutely impossible
    within ourselves.
  • 32:03 - 32:04
And we got to see that
  • 32:04 - 32:07
    through the Old Testament Scriptures.
  • 32:07 - 32:08
    (Derek) I've been told
  • 32:08 - 32:09
    that that's something
  • 32:09 - 32:14
    about Judeo-Christian faith
    that is unique,
  • 32:14 - 32:17
    because many religions have us
  • 32:17 - 32:19
    trying to earn God's favor.
  • 32:19 - 32:20
    You know, we beat ourselves,
  • 32:20 - 32:22
    we walk on hot rocks,
  • 32:22 - 32:24
or put fish hooks in our back,
  • 32:24 - 32:26
    or whatever, you know,
  • 32:26 - 32:29
to try to...or we offer chickens...
  • 32:29 - 32:32
to try to placate God or earn His favor.
  • 32:32 - 32:34
    Here, we're seeing God
    take the initiative.
  • 32:34 - 32:36
And He loves us with an everlasting love.
  • 32:36 - 32:39
Now, one other aspect of covenant
  • 32:39 - 32:41
    before we move on.
  • 32:41 - 32:42
    The Bible also speaks
  • 32:42 - 32:44
    about God wanting to make
  • 32:44 - 32:47
    an everlasting covenant.
  • 32:47 - 32:49
Is that different from this new covenant
  • 32:49 - 32:50
    we're talking about?
  • 32:50 - 32:51
    Well, let's read two verses,
  • 32:51 - 32:53
and then you can give me
  • 32:53 - 32:55
    the answer to that question.
  • 32:55 - 33:00
    Hebrews 13, verses 20 and 21,
  • 33:00 - 33:02
    Malaina, if you have that,
  • 33:02 - 33:03
you could read it for us,
  • 33:03 - 33:07
    Hebrews, chapter 13, verses 20 and 21,
  • 33:07 - 33:08
    and then someone could find
  • 33:08 - 33:10
    Isaiah 55 and verse 3.
  • 33:10 - 33:11
    (Malaina) I will be reading
  • 33:11 - 33:13
from the New King James Version,
  • 33:13 - 33:16
    Hebrews, chapter 13, verses 20 through 21:
  • 33:35 - 33:37
    (Derek) Amen. All right,
  • 33:37 - 33:39
    "through the blood
  • 33:39 - 33:42
    of the eternal covenant."
  • 33:42 - 33:46
    Isaiah 55 and verse 3,
  • 33:46 - 33:47
    someone have that already?
  • 33:47 - 33:50
Alex, do you have it already? Verse 3.
  • 33:50 - 33:51
(Alex) Okay, and I'll be reading
  • 33:51 - 33:52
    from the King James Version:
  • 34:04 - 34:06
(Derek) So, is this the same covenant,
  • 34:06 - 34:08
or is it "Oh, that's a different one."
  • 34:08 - 34:09
    The everlasting one
  • 34:09 - 34:11
    is different from Jeremiah 31.
  • 34:11 - 34:12
    What do you think?
  • 34:12 - 34:13
    (Team) Same.
  • 34:13 - 34:15
(Derek) Same. So, why does God
  • 34:15 - 34:17
    go out of His way
  • 34:17 - 34:21
    to say "everlasting covenant," Stephanie?
  • 34:21 - 34:22
    (Stephanie) That's really important
  • 34:22 - 34:24
    because it is forever;
  • 34:24 - 34:26
    it's down through the ages.
  • 34:26 - 34:29
It's His covenant that is sure.
  • 34:29 - 34:31
We know that it will be accomplished.
  • 34:31 - 34:32
    (Derek) Because we said
  • 34:32 - 34:34
    He takes the initiative,
  • 34:34 - 34:36
and it's based on what He...?
  • 34:36 - 34:37
    (Team) Has promised.
  • 34:37 - 34:38
    (Derek) And so by saying
  • 34:38 - 34:39
    it's an everlasting covenant,
  • 34:39 - 34:41
He's saying, "I am the Lord, and I..."?
  • 34:41 - 34:42
    (Stephanie) Change not.
  • 34:42 - 34:44
    (Derek) "I change not."
  • 34:44 - 34:45
    "I am the same..."?
  • 34:45 - 34:48
    (Derek, Team) Yesterday, today
    and forever.
  • 34:48 - 34:50
(Derek) So, that gives us comfort.
  • 34:50 - 34:53
We ought to get a little happy, right?
    Praise God!
  • 34:53 - 34:54
    He's not going to say,
  • 34:54 - 34:56
"You know, I thought about this, Alex.
  • 34:56 - 34:58
    You're right; you don't deserve
  • 34:58 - 35:00
this covenant I'm making with you
  • 35:00 - 35:01
    because I've noticed, in fact,
  • 35:01 - 35:03
I have a record of all of your failings."
  • 35:03 - 35:05
And you say, "Lord, have mercy."
  • 35:05 - 35:07
You say, "No, they've been washed away."
  • 35:07 - 35:08
    But you know, to think
  • 35:08 - 35:10
that God is never going to come there
  • 35:10 - 35:13
and go, "I've changed My mind
  • 35:13 - 35:15
    about this agreement with you."
  • 35:15 - 35:16
    Everlasting covenant, someone says?
  • 35:16 - 35:18
    (Team) Amen!
  • 35:18 - 35:19
    (Derek) Gladys?
  • 35:19 - 35:22
(Gladys) I've been struggling with this,
  • 35:22 - 35:24
    with the fact that, yes,
  • 35:24 - 35:26
God is love; He doesn't change,
  • 35:26 - 35:29
    but what happened with Noah?
  • 35:29 - 35:31
    He said that He regretted
  • 35:31 - 35:34
    or resented making man?
  • 35:34 - 35:36
My husband asked me that this morning
  • 35:36 - 35:37
    when we were reviewing this...
  • 35:37 - 35:39
(Derek) Okay. Well, how do you think
  • 35:39 - 35:41
God feels when we reject His offer
  • 35:41 - 35:43
    of immeasurable and unfailing love
  • 35:43 - 35:47
and throw dirt in His face, so to speak?
  • 35:47 - 35:49
How does He feel about that?
  • 35:49 - 35:50
    (Team) Hurt. It's painful.
  • 35:50 - 35:53
(Derek) It's heartbreaking for Him, right?
  • 35:53 - 35:56
I don't think He stopped loving those
  • 35:56 - 35:58
    when He regretted.
  • 35:58 - 35:59
I think He wept over those
  • 35:59 - 36:03
who refused to come into the Ark, right?
  • 36:03 - 36:04
    But He wants to make
  • 36:04 - 36:05
    this everlasting covenant with us.
  • 36:05 - 36:07
    He wants us to know
  • 36:07 - 36:11
that even when we are not trustworthy,
  • 36:11 - 36:13
    He is trustworthy. Travis?
  • 36:13 - 36:14
    (Travis) If anyone's ever had
  • 36:14 - 36:19
    a child who has rebelled,
  • 36:19 - 36:20
    I think that verse
  • 36:20 - 36:23
is really explained in that term,
    you know?
  • 36:23 - 36:24
    Once you've experienced that,
  • 36:24 - 36:26
of course you love that child,
  • 36:26 - 36:28
    but, boy, it just really
  • 36:28 - 36:30
    brings sorrow to your heart,
  • 36:30 - 36:32
and it just tears you up inside.
  • 36:32 - 36:38
And you just get that feeling inside
    like, why? You know?
  • 36:38 - 36:39
    But you would do anything
  • 36:39 - 36:40
for that child even yet, you know.
  • 36:40 - 36:42
    (Derek) Sure. Sure.
  • 36:42 - 36:43
So, I have a question for you,
  • 36:43 - 36:45
and I want you to look with me
  • 36:45 - 36:49
    in Joshua 24, [verses] 14 and 15.
  • 36:49 - 36:52
    Can you make a decision
  • 36:52 - 36:55
    for someone else to accept
  • 36:55 - 36:59
    that immeasurable and unfailing offer
    of God's love?
  • 36:59 - 37:02
    Well, before you say no,
  • 37:02 - 37:06
    let's look at Joshua 24, 14 and 15,
  • 37:06 - 37:08
    and maybe you're absolutely right.
  • 37:08 - 37:09
Maybe he talked to the family,
  • 37:09 - 37:14
    and they said, "Me, too."
  • 37:14 - 37:16
And so he comes and says...
  • 37:16 - 37:17
Well, let's see what the text says.
  • 37:17 - 37:19
    Joshua 24, Evelyn, do you
  • 37:19 - 37:22
have it there, verses 14 and 15.
  • 37:22 - 37:23
    (Evelyn) I will be reading
  • 37:23 - 37:25
    from the New Living Translation:
  • 37:57 - 37:58
    (Derek) Amen? By the way,
  • 37:58 - 38:01
    that is capitalized in my Bible;
  • 38:01 - 38:03
    that's the name, Yahweh.
  • 38:03 - 38:04
That's the name of the Lord God,
  • 38:04 - 38:06
Creator of heaven and the earth.
  • 38:06 - 38:07
    (John) His covenant name.
  • 38:07 - 38:09
(Derek) His covenant name, that's right.
  • 38:09 - 38:11
That's the agreement He's made with us.
  • 38:11 - 38:15
Now, Joshua says, "As for me and my house,
  • 38:15 - 38:16
    we will serve the Lord."
  • 38:16 - 38:18
But you're saying you can't make
  • 38:18 - 38:20
    that decision for your spouse,
  • 38:20 - 38:22
    or, if you have children,
  • 38:22 - 38:26
for your children, for your siblings.
  • 38:26 - 38:28
So, what, what do you think, Jason?
  • 38:28 - 38:29
    (Jason) Well, when you're
  • 38:29 - 38:30
    a family relationship,
  • 38:30 - 38:33
    particularly the marriage one,
    is a covenant,
  • 38:33 - 38:34
so when you have that covenant,
  • 38:34 - 38:35
    you aren't making
  • 38:35 - 38:37
the individual choice for the person,
  • 38:37 - 38:39
but you're kind of setting the tone,
  • 38:39 - 38:41
like we said with the leaders,
  • 38:41 - 38:44
you're kind of setting the direction
    for the person.
  • 38:44 - 38:46
    Ultimately, each of the individual
    family members
  • 38:46 - 38:47
have to make their own choice,
  • 38:47 - 38:49
but you can kind of set the stage
  • 38:49 - 38:51
    which way it will go.
  • 38:51 - 38:54
    (Derek) Yes. Remember that phrase,
  • 38:54 - 38:56
    "those who have understanding,"
  • 38:56 - 38:58
so, for all those that do,
  • 38:58 - 38:59
this would be a good time
  • 38:59 - 39:02
    for a family council, right,
  • 39:02 - 39:05
    and say, "As the mother,"
  • 39:05 - 39:07
or, "As the father," "As the parent,"
  • 39:07 - 39:10
some families only have one parent,
    some have two,
  • 39:10 - 39:13
    "but this is my decision,
  • 39:13 - 39:15
and here's why I'm making my decision,"
  • 39:15 - 39:17
and they say, "Mommy, we see that,"
  • 39:17 - 39:19
    or, "Daddy, we see that,"
  • 39:19 - 39:20
    or, "Mommy and daddy,
  • 39:20 - 39:23
    we see that. Me, too!"
  • 39:23 - 39:28
So, no matter how young they are,
  • 39:28 - 39:31
    if they have understanding,
  • 39:31 - 39:33
like it says in the text,
  • 39:33 - 39:36
    they can say, "Me, too."
  • 39:36 - 39:38
    And I think that's helpful.
  • 39:38 - 39:42
It's not like, you know, Joshua's dragging
  • 39:42 - 39:45
    his family kicking and screaming,
  • 39:45 - 39:47
but they thought it through together,
  • 39:47 - 39:49
and he can come and say,
  • 39:49 - 39:52
"The decision of me and my family
  • 39:52 - 39:54
is we will serve the Lord."
  • 39:54 - 39:57
Anybody want to respond to that.
    Yes, Gladys?
  • 39:57 - 39:59
    (Gladys) In a family, usually...
  • 39:59 - 40:01
I will say, for my family it's like that.
  • 40:01 - 40:03
When we were little, he always said,
  • 40:03 - 40:05
"In the morning, in my house
  • 40:05 - 40:07
    we will have worship."
  • 40:07 - 40:09
So everyone who will come and visit,
  • 40:09 - 40:10
that's what we do in my house.
  • 40:10 - 40:13
So, I think that that's what the Lord
    represents.
  • 40:13 - 40:16
    This is what He wants,
  • 40:16 - 40:17
    to have that relationship,
  • 40:17 - 40:18
and the leader of the home,
  • 40:18 - 40:20
or the representative of the home,
  • 40:20 - 40:23
makes the decision, not forcing it
  • 40:23 - 40:24
    on the family member,
  • 40:24 - 40:26
but kind of like being the representative
  • 40:26 - 40:27
    of God in the home
  • 40:27 - 40:29
    and bringing his family along.
  • 40:29 - 40:30
    (Derek) Okay, and back
  • 40:30 - 40:32
to what we've talked about earlier,
  • 40:32 - 40:33
    that list of names,
  • 40:33 - 40:35
and then it said, "and the..."?
  • 40:35 - 40:36
    "Rest of the people," right?
  • 40:36 - 40:40
So it became a total commitment.
  • 40:40 - 40:43
But leadership is not unimportant, is it?
  • 40:43 - 40:44
    That can have an influence.
  • 40:44 - 40:46
    Well, let's talk about some
  • 40:46 - 40:47
    of the promises now.
  • 40:47 - 40:49
We'll go back to Ezra and Nehemiah's time.
  • 40:49 - 40:50
    They said, "We need
  • 40:50 - 40:52
to renew our covenant with God."
  • 40:52 - 40:53
    Let's look at some
  • 40:53 - 40:56
of the promises that they made.
  • 40:56 - 40:58
John, would you read for us
  • 40:58 - 41:00
    in Nehemiah, chapter 10,
  • 41:00 - 41:05
beginning with verse 29 through verse 38.
  • 41:05 - 41:08
And while John reads that, are they
  • 41:08 - 41:11
getting the most important things here?
  • 41:11 - 41:15
Maybe what is the most important promise
    that we make,
  • 41:15 - 41:17
    let's think about that.
  • 41:17 - 41:20
But let's hear how they respond now.
  • 41:20 - 41:23
They're renewing their covenant with God.
  • 41:23 - 41:25
(John) From the New King James Version,
    it says:
  • 43:37 - 43:41
    (Derek) So, that seems like
    a lot of details, yes?
  • 43:41 - 43:47
But it's all part of a ceremonial system
  • 43:47 - 43:50
    which points to what?
  • 43:50 - 43:51
    (Brittany) The Lamb of God.
  • 43:51 - 43:53
(Derek) To the Lamb of God who's coming
  • 43:53 - 43:56
    and reflects the immeasurable
    and unfailing love of God.
  • 43:56 - 44:00
If, when we're doing all of that,
  • 44:00 - 44:05
we don't forget what it's pointing to
  • 44:05 - 44:06
    and that God wants
  • 44:06 - 44:08
what kind of relationship with us?
  • 44:08 - 44:09
    (Team) Intimate.
  • 44:09 - 44:15
    (Derek) An intimate, loving, personal
relationship with us, then it's okay.
  • 44:15 - 44:18
If we lose sight of that,
  • 44:18 - 44:21
    then we're in trouble, right?
  • 44:21 - 44:22
    Could that happen
  • 44:22 - 44:26
    even in the twenty-first century?
  • 44:26 - 44:28
You know, we don't bring lambs
  • 44:28 - 44:30
    and have grain offerings, right?
  • 44:30 - 44:31
We typically, when we come to worship,
  • 44:31 - 44:33
what are some things that we do
  • 44:33 - 44:34
    when we come to worship?
  • 44:34 - 44:35
    (Team) Praise. Sing.
  • 44:35 - 44:37
(Derek) We sing praise to God and we...?
  • 44:37 - 44:38
    (Team Member) Pray.
  • 44:38 - 44:40
    (Derek) And we pray, and...?
  • 44:40 - 44:41
    (Nicole) Read the Bible.
  • 44:41 - 44:42
    (Team Member) Give offering.
  • 44:42 - 44:45
    (Derek) We give offerings, that's right;
    We read the Bible.
  • 44:45 - 44:46
    We listen to someone
  • 44:46 - 44:49
    teaching from the Scriptures, right?
  • 44:49 - 44:52
So there are things that we do,
  • 44:52 - 44:55
but we always need to remember
  • 44:55 - 44:58
when we come that it's all about what?
  • 44:58 - 44:59
    (Team) Jesus.
  • 44:59 - 45:00
    (Derek) It's all about God
  • 45:00 - 45:02
    who loves us with a...?
  • 45:02 - 45:05
    An immeasurable and unfailing love,
    wanting a...?
  • 45:05 - 45:06
    (Team) Relationship.
  • 45:06 - 45:08
    (Derek) A relationship with us.
  • 45:08 - 45:09
And, of course, as someone mentioned,
  • 45:09 - 45:12
    He showed that most vividly
    and perfectly...?
  • 45:12 - 45:13
    (Team) At the cross.
  • 45:13 - 45:15
(Derek) Through the coming of Jesus,
  • 45:15 - 45:17
who lived, died on the cross,
  • 45:17 - 45:19
    rose again the third day,
  • 45:19 - 45:21
    and has ascended to Heaven.
  • 45:21 - 45:22
    He's ministering there
  • 45:22 - 45:24
    in the heavenly sanctuary,
  • 45:24 - 45:25
    and He's coming back soon.
  • 45:25 - 45:26
    (Team) Amen!
  • 45:26 - 45:28
(Derek) We forget that if we think,
  • 45:28 - 45:32
"I went to church this week, did you?"
  • 45:32 - 45:36
We could miss the whole point, right?
  • 45:36 - 45:38
    Promises are not bad.
  • 45:38 - 45:39
    The Bible does tell us
  • 45:39 - 45:40
    we should be careful
  • 45:40 - 45:42
    about making promises to God.
  • 45:42 - 45:44
And so I'm going to read that,
  • 45:44 - 45:47
have someone read it from Ecclesiastes 5,
  • 45:47 - 45:50
and then I have an important question
    for you, and that is,
  • 45:50 - 45:51
what is the most important promise
  • 45:51 - 45:55
anyone can ever make to God? Okay?
  • 45:55 - 45:57
But let's look first in Ecclesiastes,
  • 45:57 - 46:00
which basically says, "Don't be careless
  • 46:00 - 46:02
    in making promises to God."
  • 46:02 - 46:06
    Ecclesiastes, chapter 5, and, Adison,
  • 46:06 - 46:09
could you read the first five verses,
  • 46:09 - 46:11
    Ecclesiastes 5:1-5?
  • 46:11 - 46:12
    (Adison) And I'll be reading
  • 46:12 - 46:14
    from the King James Version:
  • 47:04 - 47:07
(Derek) So, what's the sacrifice of fools?
  • 47:10 - 47:14
    Making rash promises
  • 47:14 - 47:16
without any intention of keeping them.
  • 47:16 - 47:19
Better not to say anything, right?
  • 47:19 - 47:22
So, we don't want to be careless,
  • 47:22 - 47:24
but there's at least one promise
  • 47:24 - 47:28
that God really wants us to make.
  • 47:28 - 47:32
    What's the most important promise
  • 47:32 - 47:34
He wants us to make to Him?
  • 47:34 - 47:35
    I don't know; is there
  • 47:35 - 47:37
    a right answer to that?
  • 47:37 - 47:40
Or most important decision, I don't know.
  • 47:40 - 47:41
    What do you think, Brittany?
  • 47:41 - 47:43
(Brittany) I think He wants us
  • 47:43 - 47:44
to give Him our whole heart
  • 47:44 - 47:47
and to promise to give it to Him every day
  • 47:47 - 47:48
    the rest of our lives.
  • 47:48 - 47:50
    (Derek) Can we do that?
  • 47:50 - 47:53
    (Brittany) Only with His help.
  • 47:53 - 47:54
    (Derek) Or can I promise
  • 47:54 - 47:56
    to at least allow Him
  • 47:56 - 47:58
to enable me to do that?
  • 47:58 - 47:59
    (Team) Yes.
  • 47:59 - 48:00
    (Derek) You know, isn't there...
  • 48:00 - 48:01
    I remember a prayer,
  • 48:01 - 48:08
"Take my heart, I cannot give it,"
    you know?
  • 48:08 - 48:09
    (Adison) Keep it pure.
  • 48:09 - 48:10
    (Derek) Yeah, keep it pure.
  • 48:10 - 48:17
I mean, it's like, "God, here I am.
  • 48:17 - 48:18
    I promise to be..."?
  • 48:18 - 48:19
    (Team) Willing.
  • 48:19 - 48:22
(Derek) Willing. "I promise to be..."?
  • 48:22 - 48:24
    (Derek, Team) Open.
  • 48:24 - 48:27
    (Derek) "...to Your immeasurable
    and unfailing love.
  • 48:27 - 48:28
    Your covenant with me.
  • 48:28 - 48:30
    You know me, God,"
  • 48:30 - 48:33
but can I promise that, "I will,
  • 48:33 - 48:37
by Your grace, never close myself
    up to You"?
  • 48:37 - 48:39
Yeah, "I promise to be open to You,"
  • 48:39 - 48:41
    most important promise.
  • 48:41 - 48:44
Can anybody think, either of that promise,
  • 48:44 - 48:45
    a time when you made
  • 48:45 - 48:46
    that promise to God,
  • 48:46 - 48:50
or an important promise you made to God?
  • 48:50 - 48:51
    Anybody think of a time
  • 48:51 - 48:55
you made an important promise? Travis?
  • 48:55 - 48:56
(Travis) Yeah, it was a few years ago.
  • 48:56 - 49:00
I was in a tree reading a book...
  • 49:00 - 49:02
    (Derek) What were you doing
    in a tree, Travis?
  • 49:02 - 49:04
    (Travis) I was actually...
  • 49:04 - 49:05
    (Derek) You mean, like Zacchaeus?
  • 49:05 - 49:07
    (Travis) Actually that's the story
  • 49:07 - 49:08
    that got my attention
  • 49:08 - 49:09
in the book I was reading,
  • 49:09 - 49:11
and I realized then and there
  • 49:11 - 49:14
that I wanted to live the rest of my life
  • 49:14 - 49:16
    in ministry, working for Jesus.
  • 49:16 - 49:18
And I told Him, that's what I'll do.
  • 49:18 - 49:22
And I've had bumps along the way,
    but still going.
  • 49:22 - 49:24
(Derek) So, that promise was to just say,
  • 49:24 - 49:26
    "God, take my heart,
  • 49:26 - 49:28
    I cannot give it."
  • 49:28 - 49:30
    I mean, "Here I am.
  • 49:30 - 49:33
I give myself to You; hold onto Me."
  • 49:33 - 49:35
    Bumps along the way.
  • 49:35 - 49:38
    Anybody else have a testimony?
  • 49:38 - 49:39
    Jason and then John.
  • 49:39 - 49:40
    (Jason) Towards the end
  • 49:40 - 49:41
    of my collegiate experience,
  • 49:41 - 49:43
I was trying to figure out
  • 49:43 - 49:44
where I should go in life,
  • 49:44 - 49:45
    and I was struggling
  • 49:45 - 49:47
    with different opportunities and paths.
  • 49:47 - 49:49
    And during that time,
  • 49:49 - 49:51
I had a conversation with God,
  • 49:51 - 49:52
and the conclusion of it was,
  • 49:52 - 49:54
    "All right, Lord, I promise
  • 49:54 - 49:57
that whatever direction You show me,
  • 49:57 - 49:58
I'm going to go; do You want me
  • 49:58 - 50:00
    to go to this school?
  • 50:00 - 50:01
Do you want me to go to this job?"
  • 50:01 - 50:03
And He ended up sending me
  • 50:03 - 50:05
to be a student missionary for a year
  • 50:05 - 50:07
before sending me on a career,
  • 50:07 - 50:10
and I know I needed to make that promise.
  • 50:10 - 50:11
I needed to open myself to God's will
  • 50:11 - 50:13
so that He could put me
  • 50:13 - 50:14
where He wanted to put me
  • 50:14 - 50:16
along the path that He had for my life.
  • 50:16 - 50:18
(Derek) And maybe you hadn't thought
  • 50:18 - 50:20
about the student missionary for a year,
  • 50:20 - 50:22
but God says, "As part of the plan,
  • 50:22 - 50:24
I need you to go here,"
  • 50:24 - 50:25
which was where, by the way?
  • 50:25 - 50:27
    (Jason) In Central America.
  • 50:27 - 50:29
    (Derek) In Central America.
    All right. John.
  • 50:29 - 50:31
    (John) In 2013 my wife
  • 50:31 - 50:32
    was involved in an accident
  • 50:32 - 50:34
    while she was jogging.
  • 50:34 - 50:36
A vehicle struck her from behind.
  • 50:36 - 50:38
    She had been life-flighted
  • 50:38 - 50:40
    to the nearest trauma center.
  • 50:40 - 50:42
A policeman showed up at my door
  • 50:42 - 50:43
    with the police chaplain
  • 50:43 - 50:44
    and told me about it.
  • 50:44 - 50:48
    And during the hour-and-a-half drive
    to the hospital,
  • 50:48 - 50:49
    not knowing her condition
  • 50:49 - 50:52
    other than she was flown,
  • 50:52 - 50:53
    and all these things
  • 50:53 - 50:55
    going through my mind,
  • 50:55 - 50:56
I had made a promise to God
  • 50:56 - 50:59
    that I will never doubt
  • 50:59 - 51:00
    His goodness and love,
  • 51:00 - 51:02
    regardless of the outcome.
  • 51:02 - 51:04
    The promise was, "I'm going
  • 51:04 - 51:06
    to serve You still."
  • 51:06 - 51:07
    And I can praise God
  • 51:07 - 51:10
    that she's restored fully,
  • 51:10 - 51:13
but I was going to serve God regardless.
  • 51:13 - 51:18
    (Derek) Powerful.
  • 51:18 - 51:22
    That's a Holy-Spirit-enabled promise,
  • 51:22 - 51:25
    right, because the enemy says,
  • 51:25 - 51:28
    "Curse God and die."
  • 51:28 - 51:29
But, "No, I will trust You still."
  • 51:29 - 51:31
That's kind of Job, isn't it?
  • 51:31 - 51:33
    "No matter what happens,
  • 51:33 - 51:35
    I'll trust in You."
  • 51:35 - 51:36
    Well, God wants us
  • 51:36 - 51:38
    to enter into that promise.
  • 51:38 - 51:39
    What do you do...
  • 51:39 - 51:41
    Maybe someone comes to you,
  • 51:41 - 51:42
and we don't have a lot of time,
  • 51:42 - 51:43
    you're just going to have
  • 51:43 - 51:45
to quote the text for me,
  • 51:45 - 51:47
someone comes to you and says, "Derek,
  • 51:47 - 51:49
I made that promise up in the tree,
  • 51:49 - 51:51
but I had a bump along the way,
  • 51:51 - 51:53
and I feel like I broke my promise.
  • 51:53 - 51:57
I went out and I did something stupid
  • 51:57 - 51:58
after I had made a promise.
  • 51:58 - 52:01
I just wanted to follow Jesus
    no matter what."
  • 52:01 - 52:04
What would you say to that friend
  • 52:04 - 52:05
if she came to you and said,
  • 52:05 - 52:10
"I guess it didn't work out
    for me," Brittany?
  • 52:10 - 52:12
(Brittany) I think about the story
    of Peter
  • 52:12 - 52:13
    and how he promised
  • 52:13 - 52:14
    he would never leave Christ,
  • 52:14 - 52:17
and then Jesus said to him,
    "I'll pray for you,
  • 52:17 - 52:20
that even after your faith fails you,
  • 52:20 - 52:22
that you will come and return to Me."
  • 52:22 - 52:24
And Jesus said that to Him
  • 52:24 - 52:26
    even before he failed.
  • 52:26 - 52:28
He said, "I'll be praying for you."
  • 52:28 - 52:29
    And so that's something
  • 52:29 - 52:31
    that we can remember.
  • 52:31 - 52:33
    Jesus knows when we're going to fail;
  • 52:33 - 52:36
He knows when we're going to stumble,
but He's still praying for us.
  • 52:36 - 52:40
He knows that we'll come back; He's giving
us the opportunity to come back.
  • 52:40 - 52:41
    (Derek) So there are stories,
  • 52:41 - 52:44
    there are promises.
  • 52:44 - 52:45
    Someone else in the Scripture
  • 52:45 - 52:47
    that gives us hope? Gladys?
  • 52:47 - 52:49
(Gladys) Yes, I love the story of David
  • 52:49 - 52:52
when he fell, and in Psalm 51
  • 52:52 - 52:56
he said, "A broken and contrite heart,
  • 52:56 - 52:57
    You will not despise."
  • 52:57 - 53:00
So even when we fail, God doesn't.
  • 53:00 - 53:01
    (Derek) I love those words
  • 53:01 - 53:03
    in Psalm 51, verse 10,
  • 53:03 - 53:06
    "Create in me a clean heart, O God;
  • 53:06 - 53:10
and renew a right spirit within me.
  • 53:10 - 53:12
Do not cast me away from Your presence,
  • 53:12 - 53:14
or take Your Holy Spirit from me.
  • 53:14 - 53:16
    Restore to me..."
  • 53:16 - 53:18
    (Derek, Team) "... the joy
    of Your salvation."
  • 53:18 - 53:20
    (Derek) So it's coming back
  • 53:20 - 53:21
    into that intimate relationship
  • 53:21 - 53:23
with a God who loves us how?
  • 53:23 - 53:26
With an immeasurable and unfailing love.
  • 53:26 - 53:29
You know, we cannot fail when we fall
  • 53:29 - 53:33
    into the arms of a loving Savior;
    we can't.
  • 53:33 - 53:35
There's one last thought in our study.
  • 53:35 - 53:37
We've just got a couple of minutes left.
  • 53:37 - 53:40
Did you notice, talking about caring
  • 53:40 - 53:41
    for the house of God.
  • 53:41 - 53:44
Go back to Nehemiah 10 and verse 39,
  • 53:44 - 53:48
at the end of this renewing
    of the covenant.
  • 53:48 - 53:55
    Nehemiah makes this interesting record
  • 53:55 - 53:57
    in chapter 10, Nehemiah,
  • 53:57 - 54:00
    chapter 10, and verse 39.
  • 54:00 - 54:02
    Brittany, would you read
    that verse for us?
  • 54:02 - 54:03
    (Brittany) I'll be reading
  • 54:03 - 54:05
from the New King James Version,
  • 54:05 - 54:07
Nehemiah, chapter 10 and verse 39:
  • 54:28 - 54:33
(Derek) Why is that last phrase
    so important?
  • 54:33 - 54:35
Why is it important today, too,
  • 54:35 - 54:36
    but let's go back there,
  • 54:36 - 54:38
    "We will not neglect
  • 54:38 - 54:40
    the house of our God"?
  • 54:40 - 54:41
    Why is that important?
  • 54:41 - 54:45
God doesn't need that house, or does He?
  • 54:45 - 54:47
Why is it important that they said,
  • 54:47 - 54:48
    "We're not going to neglect
  • 54:48 - 54:49
    the house of our God"?
  • 54:49 - 54:51
    Short answer, Travis.
  • 54:51 - 54:52
    (Travis) Because that was
  • 54:52 - 54:53
    the picture of salvation
  • 54:53 - 54:55
of the land that was going to be...
  • 54:55 - 54:57
(Derek) That is telling the story
  • 54:57 - 54:58
about a God who loves us
  • 54:58 - 55:01
with an immeasurable and unfailing love.
  • 55:01 - 55:03
    Hyperspace forward to our time.
  • 55:03 - 55:05
What does that mean for us today?
  • 55:05 - 55:08
We'd say, "Okay, we're followers of Jesus,
  • 55:08 - 55:10
    preparing for His soon return."
  • 55:10 - 55:11
    How many does Jesus
  • 55:11 - 55:13
want to be saved in His Kingdom?
  • 55:13 - 55:14
    (Team) All.
  • 55:14 - 55:15
    (Derek) "We will not neglect
  • 55:15 - 55:16
    the house of our God."
  • 55:16 - 55:17
    What does that mean
  • 55:17 - 55:19
    for us today? Stephanie?
  • 55:19 - 55:21
(Stephanie) I think it means showing up
  • 55:21 - 55:22
    and being presently active.
  • 55:22 - 55:24
    (Derek) Okay, so you'd say
  • 55:24 - 55:26
    it's very physical, actually going
  • 55:26 - 55:28
    and being active in what?
  • 55:28 - 55:29
    (Stephanie) In ministry.
  • 55:29 - 55:30
    (Derek) In, in...?
  • 55:30 - 55:32
(Stephanie) The ministry of the church.
  • 55:32 - 55:35
(Derek) In the ministry of the church,
    which is what, Harold?
  • 55:35 - 55:36
What is the ministry of the church?
  • 55:36 - 55:38
    (Harold) To share the gospel.
  • 55:38 - 55:39
    (Derek) That's right, to share
  • 55:39 - 55:41
the good news about a God who loves us
  • 55:41 - 55:43
with an immeasurable and unfailing love.
  • 55:43 - 55:46
Now, back then it took sacrifice, right?
  • 55:46 - 55:47
    They brought their tithes;
  • 55:47 - 55:49
    they brought their offerings.
  • 55:49 - 55:50
    Does it require sacrifice today?
  • 55:50 - 55:51
    (Team) Yes!
  • 55:51 - 55:53
    (Derek) What kind of sacrifices?
  • 55:53 - 55:54
    (Team Member) A living sacrifice.
  • 55:54 - 55:56
    (Derek) A living sacrifice
  • 55:56 - 55:57
    because, actually, while God
  • 55:57 - 55:59
does want us to return our faithful tithes
  • 55:59 - 56:02
and to honor Him with praise and prayer,
  • 56:02 - 56:05
what He wants more than anything is...?
  • 56:05 - 56:06
    (Team) Our hearts.
  • 56:06 - 56:07
    (Derek) He wants us,
  • 56:07 - 56:10
that living sacrifice that will love Him
  • 56:10 - 56:11
    with all of our hearts
  • 56:11 - 56:13
    and will go out and...?
  • 56:13 - 56:15
    (Team) Share...
  • 56:15 - 56:16
    (Derek) Share the good news
  • 56:16 - 56:17
about a God who loves us
  • 56:17 - 56:19
with an immeasurable and unfailing love.
  • 56:19 - 56:21
    What we'll discover
  • 56:21 - 56:25
is that when we do that,
  • 56:25 - 56:26
    out of the context
  • 56:26 - 56:30
of an intimate relationship with God,
  • 56:30 - 56:31
    what's going to happen
  • 56:31 - 56:33
when we go out to share with people
  • 56:33 - 56:35
about a God who loves them?
  • 56:35 - 56:37
    Out of the context
  • 56:37 - 56:39
of a life-changing relationship with God,
  • 56:39 - 56:40
    what's going to happen?
  • 56:40 - 56:41
    (Team) We'll be changed.
  • 56:41 - 56:43
(Derek) It's going to change lives,
    including...?
  • 56:43 - 56:44
    (Team) Ours.
  • 56:44 - 56:46
    (Derek) That's right.
  • 56:46 - 56:49
You know, when God asks us
    to do something,
  • 56:49 - 56:51
    it's not just because He
  • 56:51 - 56:53
    can't find anybody else.
  • 56:53 - 56:55
    He could ask angels,
  • 56:55 - 56:57
but He wants us to experience
  • 56:57 - 56:59
    his immeasurable and unfailing love
  • 56:59 - 57:02
as we join Him in His harvest work.
  • 57:02 - 57:04
We will not let it be said of us
  • 57:04 - 57:06
    in this last generation,
  • 57:06 - 57:09
we will not neglect the house of our God.
  • 57:09 - 57:12
