Health Care & the Lost Art of Compromise
-
0:03 - 0:05HEALTHCARE!!!
-
0:05 - 0:06So we finally got a healthcare plan.
-
0:06 - 0:08Are you excited?
-
0:08 - 0:10Kind of, right? Yeah.
-
0:10 - 0:12It wasn't really the plan I was hoping for,
-
0:12 - 0:14it's not an amazing progressive plan.
-
0:14 - 0:17I really thought we would have universal healthcare,
-
0:17 - 0:18but that was foolish!
-
0:18 - 0:20Then I thought we would have a public option,
-
0:20 - 0:21still overly optimistic,
-
0:21 - 0:23because we started out with the public option.
-
0:23 - 0:27In this country, when you start out with a reasonable proposal, it gets watered down,
-
0:27 - 0:31and I was frustrated that we didn't
use my healthcare proposal, -
0:31 - 0:33cause I had a healthcare proposal ready to go
-
0:33 - 0:34that nobody listened to,
-
0:34 - 0:35maybe because I'm a comedian.
-
0:35 - 0:39My healthcare proposal wasn't so much about a redistribution of wealth.
-
0:39 - 0:44My healthcare proposal was about a redistribution of organs from rich to poor.
-
0:44 - 0:48And you're thinking "oh, you mean after rich people die, we would take their organs from them."
-
0:48 - 0:52Yes, friends, after rich people die,
-
0:52 - 0:55and after we kill them,
-
0:55 - 0:58like a bunch of scalpel-wielding
Robin Hoods in the night... -
0:58 - 1:01we would kill these rich people
and take their organs from them. -
1:01 - 1:04Cause there are a lot of poor people
who need those organs, friends, -
1:04 - 1:05for transplants,
-
1:05 - 1:07and of course, for food.
-
1:07 - 1:10And as we all know,
rich people's organs are a delicacy. -
1:10 - 1:14Ohhhhh yes, how we would force-feed these rich people organic grains
-
1:14 - 1:15and get them all plump,
-
1:15 - 1:18their organs all juicy, succulent,
-
1:18 - 1:21and of course we'd have them walk around
their very large estates... -
1:21 - 1:22they'd be free range,
-
1:22 - 1:24they'd be free range rich people.
-
1:24 - 1:26And then very humanely
-because they're human beings!- -
1:26 - 1:27we would kill these rich people,
-
1:27 - 1:29and take out their organs,
-
1:29 - 1:30and we'd feast,
-
1:30 - 1:33we'd eat a little meal I call justice.
-
1:33 - 1:36And you're thinking "Hari, that is so unreasonable!"
-
1:36 - 1:37Yes, friends!
-
1:37 - 1:39And if we had started out with that proposal,
-
1:39 - 1:40we'd have the public option by now.
-
1:40 - 1:41That's all I'm saying!
-
1:41 - 1:43We'd have the public option by now.
-
1:43 - 1:46Yes, some of you think
it's an unreasonable proposal; -
1:46 - 1:48I think of it more as a modest proposal.

http://twitter.com/harithecomicI've been meaning to address the historic passage of the health care bill, but wasn't feeling fully qualified to break it down, so I got the noted health care expert and standup comic Hari Kondabolu to give his thoughts on Obama's health care plan, and what he thinks we could have done to fight harder for truly progressive reform.
You can see Hari live on Thursday night here in NY, when he headlines at Comix with another great comic, Baron Vaughn.
