God is Gracious But Sin Has Terrible Consequences - Ryan Fullerton
-
0:00 - 0:02Now we noted that God forgives.
-
0:02 - 0:06Forgives so fully that David escapes death
-
0:06 - 0:08and brings joy to his soul.
-
0:08 - 0:10But there are consequences.
-
0:10 - 0:13I cannot tell you that if you
come clean of your sin, -
0:13 - 0:15your wife won't leave you.
-
0:15 - 0:18I cannot tell you that
your kids won't hate you. -
0:18 - 0:21That your boss won't fire you.
-
0:21 - 0:23The government won't arrest you.
-
0:23 - 0:26I cannot make you that promise.
-
0:26 - 0:29God often allows dark consequences
-
0:29 - 0:31to follow our sins.
-
0:31 - 0:33I know a man who pressed on
-
0:33 - 0:34for many years in pornography
-
0:34 - 0:36and saw his wife die.
-
0:36 - 0:41He felt her death was
God's discipline for his sin. -
0:41 - 0:45God may discipline you
terribly for your sin, -
0:45 - 0:50but it's still worth it to come clean.
-
0:50 - 0:53You may lose everything,
-
0:53 - 0:58but you'll have God.
-
0:58 - 1:00(incomplete thought)
-
1:00 - 1:02Second to finally,
-
1:02 - 1:06David pleads and presses on.
-
1:06 - 1:08Now what David does next is shocking.
-
1:08 - 1:09He fasts and prays that God
-
1:09 - 1:13would not inflict the fullness
of His discipline on him. -
1:13 - 1:18He fasts and prays for
the life of his child. -
1:18 - 1:21Chapter 12, verse 15,
-
1:21 - 1:23"And the Lord afflicted the child
-
1:23 - 1:24that Uriah's wife bore to David,
-
1:24 - 1:26and he became sick.
-
1:26 - 1:28David therefore sought God
on behalf of the child -
1:28 - 1:30and David fasted and went in
-
1:30 - 1:32and lay all night on the ground.
-
1:32 - 1:34And the elders of his
house stood beside him -
1:34 - 1:36to raise him from the
ground, but he would not, -
1:36 - 1:39nor did he eat food with them.
-
1:39 - 1:41On the seventh day, the child died,
-
1:41 - 1:42but the servants of David were afraid
-
1:42 - 1:44to tell him that the child was dead,
-
1:44 - 1:47for they said, 'Behold, while
the child was yet alive, -
1:47 - 1:50we spoke to him and he
did not listen to us. -
1:50 - 1:52How can we say to him the child is dead?
-
1:52 - 1:54He may do himself some harm.'"
-
1:54 - 1:56They thought David was suicidal.
-
1:56 - 1:58"But when David saw that his servants
-
1:58 - 1:59were whispering together,
-
1:59 - 2:02David understood that the child was dead.
-
2:02 - 2:03And David said to his servants,
-
2:03 - 2:05'Is the child dead?'
-
2:05 - 2:06They said, 'He is dead.'
-
2:06 - 2:08Then David arose from the earth
-
2:08 - 2:10and washed and anointed himself
-
2:10 - 2:11and changed his clothes.
-
2:11 - 2:14He went into the house of
the Lord and worshiped. -
2:14 - 2:17He then went to his
servants who said to him, -
2:17 - 2:19'What is this thing you have done?
-
2:19 - 2:22You fasted and wept for the
child when he was alive, -
2:22 - 2:25but when the child died,
you arose and ate food.' -
2:25 - 2:27He said, 'While the child was alive,
-
2:27 - 2:28I fasted and wept.
-
2:28 - 2:30For I said who knows whether the Lord
-
2:30 - 2:31will be gracious to me,
-
2:31 - 2:33that the child may live.
-
2:33 - 2:34But now he is dead.
-
2:34 - 2:36Why should I fast?
-
2:36 - 2:38Can I bring him back again?
-
2:38 - 2:39I shall go to him,
-
2:39 - 2:42but he will not return to me.'"
-
2:42 - 2:44David's servants were confused by David,
-
2:44 - 2:46and maybe you're confused by David too.
-
2:46 - 2:48What's going on here?
-
2:48 - 2:51They thought he was praying
and fasting out of grief. -
2:51 - 2:53But he was not primarily fasting
-
2:53 - 2:55and praying out of grief.
-
2:55 - 2:58He was fasting and praying for mercy.
-
2:58 - 3:00He was hoping God would remove
-
3:00 - 3:02some of the consequences.
-
3:02 - 3:04Did you know you can do that?
-
3:04 - 3:06If you come clean over your sin
-
3:06 - 3:07and God disciplines you,
-
3:07 - 3:11you can ask God to suspend the discipline.
-
3:11 - 3:13In fact, I've seen God grant mercy
-
3:13 - 3:16to so many disciplined
saints over the years. -
3:16 - 3:18I remember a young woman
-
3:18 - 3:19who had lied to her school.
-
3:19 - 3:20If I remember correctly,
-
3:20 - 3:22she had cheated on a test
-
3:22 - 3:24affecting her entrance requirements.
-
3:24 - 3:25And as she came to know more
-
3:25 - 3:27of God's holiness and grace,
-
3:27 - 3:28she came clean, but she knew
-
3:28 - 3:31she might be kicked out of her school.
-
3:31 - 3:32We prayed and prayed
-
3:32 - 3:33and God had mercy on her.
-
3:33 - 3:36And when she told the
school administration, -
3:36 - 3:38they had mercy on her.
-
3:38 - 3:41I remember a man who
was fired for lying at work. -
3:41 - 3:43We prayed for God to be merciful to him
-
3:43 - 3:44as he came clean.
-
3:44 - 3:46And he was given another job
-
3:46 - 3:48by a different company that day.
-
3:48 - 3:51Sometimes - many times - He does that.
-
3:51 - 3:53He releases us from the discipline.
-
3:53 - 3:56He does not treat us as our sins deserve.
-
3:56 - 3:59I knew a man who by the
time he came to Christ -
3:59 - 4:00had such a damaged marriage
-
4:00 - 4:03that it did not look like the
marriage could be saved. -
4:03 - 4:04Yet, he prayed and prayed,
-
4:04 - 4:07and he would not take
his wedding ring off. -
4:07 - 4:08He prayed and prayed, but in the end,
-
4:08 - 4:10he had to take off the wedding ring
-
4:10 - 4:13because God did not restore the marriage.
-
4:13 - 4:15But God still forgave his sins.
-
4:15 - 4:20He was not treated as his sins deserved.
-
4:20 - 4:22Can I say this to you this morning?
-
4:22 - 4:27I have not been treated
as my sins deserve. -
4:27 - 4:30And you have not been treated, believer,
-
4:30 - 4:32as your sins deserve.
-
4:32 - 4:34Perhaps you have confessed some secret sin
-
4:34 - 4:36sometime in the past
-
4:36 - 4:38and the discipline has stayed.
-
4:38 - 4:41God was being merciful to you.
-
4:41 - 4:42How you should praise God
-
4:42 - 4:44with shouts of hallelujah this morning
-
4:44 - 4:47that God didn't reject you
and send you to hell, -
4:47 - 4:49but He kept you as His child.
-
4:49 - 4:52And maybe you're here this
morning and you're like -
4:52 - 4:54I did get myself in a pickle.
-
4:54 - 4:55I should have lost my marriage.
-
4:55 - 4:57I should have lost my job.
-
4:57 - 5:00But instead, God sustained even those.
-
5:00 - 5:03We should have shouts of
hallelujah to the rooftops -
5:03 - 5:05for how God has preserved us
-
5:05 - 5:09even in the midst of our sin.
-
5:09 - 5:13Finally, God restores.
-
5:13 - 5:16The last two paragraphs of this chapter
-
5:16 - 5:18are fairly scandalous.
-
5:18 - 5:22David is treated with
real, practical grace. -
5:22 - 5:25These paragraphs include two instances
-
5:25 - 5:29of God being super-gracious to David.
-
5:29 - 5:31Treating him the way we kind of get mad
-
5:31 - 5:33when we see sinners treated.
-
5:33 - 5:37Treating him well and lavishly.
-
5:37 - 5:41It says that God gives David Bathsheba.
-
5:41 - 5:44And then personally sends a note
-
5:44 - 5:48where He decides what Bathsheba's son
-
5:48 - 5:50will be named.
-
5:50 - 5:53You talk about divine
intervention in your life. -
5:53 - 5:55It says in v. 24 of chapter 12,
-
5:55 - 5:58"Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba
-
5:58 - 6:00and went in to her and lay with her
-
6:00 - 6:01and she bore a son
-
6:01 - 6:03and he called his name Solomon,
-
6:03 - 6:04and the Lord loved him
-
6:04 - 6:07and sent a message by Nathan the prophet
-
6:07 - 6:10so he called his name Jedidiah
-
6:10 - 6:11because of the Lord."
-
6:11 - 6:12You can imagine how much David
-
6:12 - 6:14would have doubted the love of God
-
6:14 - 6:16after all of God's discipline upon him.
-
6:16 - 6:18And there he is standing with his new son
-
6:18 - 6:20and Nathan comes - the same
one who had convicted him - -
6:20 - 6:21and slips him a note.
-
6:21 - 6:25God has decided the
name of this new child. -
6:25 - 6:29What an assurance of God's
involvement in David's life; -
6:29 - 6:31God's love for David.
-
6:31 - 6:33Now you might get all judgy
-
6:33 - 6:35about David and Bathsheba
-
6:35 - 6:37getting to have a happy marriage
-
6:37 - 6:39after all the mess they were in,
-
6:39 - 6:41but some of you started your relationship
-
6:41 - 6:43with a bunch of fornication
-
6:43 - 6:44before you were married
-
6:44 - 6:47and lo and behold, God
still gave you to each other -
6:47 - 6:49and after you came clean of your sin,
-
6:49 - 6:51He actually gave you a stable marriage.
-
6:51 - 6:53Some of you He even gave kids.
-
6:53 - 6:55Pretty amazing really.
-
6:55 - 6:58And I know of people who
should not have gotten divorced. -
6:58 - 7:00The Bible after all seldom allows divorce.
-
7:00 - 7:02And they should not have gotten remarried.
-
7:02 - 7:05After all, the Bible really
speaks negatively -
7:05 - 7:07of remarriage after an unlawful divorce.
-
7:07 - 7:09I know of people who have done that,
-
7:09 - 7:11but lo and behold, God gave them grace
-
7:11 - 7:13and sometimes even children.
-
7:13 - 7:15We should not take stories like this
-
7:15 - 7:16as an excuse to sin.
-
7:16 - 7:18But if you've been blessed
-
7:18 - 7:20after you came clean from sin,
-
7:20 - 7:22then you have one more reason
-
7:22 - 7:24to bless the Lord this morning,
-
7:24 - 7:26and one more reason to come clean
-
7:26 - 7:28if you've hidden sin in your life.
-
7:28 - 7:30How can you hide sin against the God
-
7:30 - 7:35who has been so gracious to you?
- Title:
- God is Gracious But Sin Has Terrible Consequences - Ryan Fullerton
- Description:
-
Praise be to God that He forgives our sins and that we won't have to go to hell for them. But this doesn't mean that there will not be fierce and severe consequences for our sin. God's forgiveness doesn't in any way nullify His discipline.
