Blues Lead Guitar: Position 4 Licks #14of20 (Guitar Lesson BL-024) How to play
-
0:05 - 0:09This time we are here for Lesson BL-024.
-
0:09 - 0:12In which we are going to be
checking out some licks -
0:12 - 0:16using position 4 of minor pentatonic
and the Blue scale. -
0:16 - 0:20The licks that we are going to be doing are these.
-
0:20 - 0:22So lick number one sounds like this
-
0:22 - 0:25. . .
-
0:25 - 0:27Lick number two sounds like this
-
0:27 - 0:32. . .
-
0:32 - 0:34Lick number three sounds like this
-
0:34 - 0:37. . .
-
0:37 - 0:40Lick number four sounds like this
-
0:40 - 0:43. . .
-
0:43 - 0:45I find it kind of fast,
you can play this slowly as well. -
0:45 - 0:51And lick number 5 is this one.
A pretty weird one -
0:51 - 0:56. . .
-
0:56 - 0:58Which I will explain a little bit more
when we go to a close up. -
0:58 - 1:00So let's start off.
-
1:00 - 1:03Close up of lick 1, here we go !
-
1:05 - 1:07Ok. Lick no1 was this
-
1:07 - 1:11. . .
-
1:11 - 1:14Now this one's a really really cool little trick here.
-
1:14 - 1:17What we are doing is
putting the 1st finger in the 12th fret, -
1:17 - 1:192nd finger in the 13th fret
-
1:19 - 1:23and we are going to put a curl
just on the 13th. -
1:23 - 1:28Rhythm for this is going 1 2 3 and 4 and
-
1:28 - 1:33So first two is beat 1 and beat 2.
-
1:33 - 1:36Now, normally my fingers would be
kind of holding over -
1:36 - 1:38but here I'm just pulling them back,
so you can see. -
1:38 - 1:411st finger staying where it is,
and the 2nd finger is doing a little curl. -
1:41 - 1:44. . .
-
1:44 - 1:50Then we finish 3rd finger is now going
on the 14th fret of the 3rd string. -
1:50 - 1:52We are putting it down
a little bit flatter than normal . -
1:52 - 1:54because it's going to play there
-
1:54 - 1:59and then roll onto its tip
to play the 14th fret of the 4th string -
1:59 - 2:02. . .
-
2:02 - 2:04Then 1st finger on 12th fret 3rd string
-
2:04 - 2:06. . .
-
2:06 - 2:09And finishing back on the root note.
Slowly : -
2:09 - 2:15. . .
-
2:15 - 2:16A little faster
-
2:16 - 2:21. . .
-
2:21 - 2:22And faster again
-
2:22 - 2:25. . .
-
2:26 - 2:29Now lick no2 here is this
-
2:29 - 2:33. . .
-
2:33 - 2:37Now this one, we are starting here
with the bend with the 3rd finger 15th fret -
2:37 - 2:39and then while we are holding a bend,
-
2:39 - 2:42we are going to sneak
our little finger underneath -
2:42 - 2:44to play the 15th fret of the thinnest string.
-
2:44 - 2:49. . .
-
2:49 - 2:51Of course we've got to release in there, as well.
-
2:51 - 2:52So we are doing a bend,
-
2:52 - 2:54. . .
-
2:54 - 2:55play the note
-
2:55 - 2:56. . .
-
2:56 - 3:01and you can see at the time I'm hitting that one,
I'm also muting the bent note -
3:01 - 3:03but I'am muting it
with the picking hand. -
3:03 - 3:06. . .
-
3:06 - 3:08So at that point you can hear
the bend disappears -
3:08 - 3:13and that's because I'm allowing my picking hand
to touch that second string. -
3:13 - 3:15Now, once its touch to the note is finished
-
3:15 - 3:19I can then bring it back down again,
ready for the next bend -
3:19 - 3:22. . .
-
3:22 - 3:24Definitely worth practising,
just that a little bit. -
3:24 - 3:30. . .
-
3:30 - 3:31Now the next part
-
3:31 - 3:34. . .
-
3:34 - 3:39We've got 15th to 13th flick-off
using 3rd finger to 1st finger -
3:39 - 3:41. . .
-
3:41 - 3:442nd finger on the14th fret 3rd string
-
3:44 - 3:45. . .
-
3:45 - 3:47then 3rd finger back on 15th
-
3:47 - 3:49. . .
-
3:49 - 3:52finishing with a curl
on the 13th fret with the 1st finger -
3:52 - 3:58. . .
-
3:58 - 3:59The whole lick
-
3:59 - 4:05. . .
-
4:06 - 4:08Into Lick no3.
-
4:08 - 4:14Lick no3 is starting with a tone bend
from the note G, -
4:14 - 4:173rd finger 15th fret
of the thinnest string -
4:17 - 4:18. . .
-
4:18 - 4:20Then it's coming back down,
-
4:20 - 4:23so again we're using our picking hand
to mute the strings at the top -
4:23 - 4:25so that we don't get seagulls.
-
4:25 - 4:29If you are unsure about how to do this thing,
check out the Bending video -
4:29 - 4:36. . .
-
4:36 - 4:40Here we're using a 3rd finger to 1st finger flick-off,
15th fret to 12th fret. -
4:40 - 4:42. . .
-
4:42 - 4:453rd finger is moving over
to the 15th fret of the 2nd string . -
4:45 - 4:47and then back to 1st finger
on the thinnest string. -
4:47 - 4:50. . .
-
4:50 - 4:52Now at this point,
we are using 2nd finger now -
4:52 - 4:56on the note C which is the 13th fret,
which gets a curl, -
4:56 - 4:57. . .
-
4:57 - 5:00and finishing with the 3rd finger
on the root note, -
5:00 - 5:02which is 14th fret 3rd string.
-
5:02 - 5:03. . .
-
5:03 - 5:04Nice and slow
-
5:04 - 5:18. . .
-
5:18 - 5:19Little faster
-
5:19 - 5:27. . .
-
5:27 - 5:28and it can be quite fast.
-
5:28 - 5:33. . .
-
5:35 - 5:38Lick No4.
We are using a blue note again -
5:38 - 5:40right of the back
with that hammer-on and flick-off -
5:40 - 5:42. . .
-
5:42 - 5:45So that's the 12th fret of the 4th string,
-
5:45 - 5:49hammering on 2nd finger into the 13th,
flicking it off again -
5:49 - 5:51. . .
-
5:51 - 5:54then picking little finger
15th fret on the 5th string -
5:54 - 5:57. . .
-
5:57 - 6:00Now we've got here
a little string of hammer-ons . -
6:00 - 6:02So use it going through the blue note,
-
6:02 - 6:07which is 1st, 2nd, 3rd fingers,
12th,13th 14th frets on the D string -
6:07 - 6:09. . .
-
6:09 - 6:12Onto the G string,
we've got 1st finger 14th fret -
6:12 - 6:15and we are hammering on the 3rd finger
onto the note A -
6:15 - 6:18which is the 14th fret of the G string.
-
6:18 - 6:23Flick here it off again back to note G,
first finger -
6:23 - 6:28and we are finishing off there
with a little 2nd finger curl -
6:28 - 6:31. . .
-
6:31 - 6:33and finishing back on the root note,
so we have this -
6:33 - 6:39. . .
-
6:39 - 6:41A very nice little lick!
-
6:41 - 6:42Again nice and slow
-
6:42 - 6:52. . .
-
6:52 - 6:53A little faster
-
6:53 - 6:59. . .
-
6:59 - 7:00Faster again
-
7:00 - 7:03. . .
-
7:03 - 7:05And, really fast!
-
7:05 - 7:11. . .
-
7:11 - 7:17Lick no5, this one's using a little trick
that we use sometimes while we are playing. -
7:17 - 7:21It's called playing in 4ths
where we play the notes of the scale. -
7:21 - 7:27I think of it as 2 sides like (plays)
the 2nd side and the first side. -
7:27 - 7:28We are playing these 2 notes like
-
7:28 - 7:31. . .
-
7:31 - 7:32That's the pattern.
-
7:32 - 7:36So if you thought of it like a little box,
we are kind of going up the box, -
7:36 - 7:37back and then down the box.
-
7:37 - 7:40It's kind of going around
in a little square there. -
7:40 - 7:43. . .
-
7:43 - 7:45And then you could do the same thing
on the next set of strings. -
7:45 - 7:48. . .
-
7:48 - 7:49And the next set.
-
7:49 - 7:52. . .
-
7:52 - 7:53You see this is a little pattern.
-
7:53 - 8:01. . .
-
8:01 - 8:03And that's as far as we take here
with this pattern, -
8:03 - 8:07but I'am also that would normally be played
as either sixteenth notes or eighth notes, -
8:07 - 8:09because it's a 4 note pattern.
-
8:09 - 8:12But to make a little bit more interesting
I have turned them into triplets. -
8:12 - 8:14So you get a quite a different feeling.
-
8:14 - 8:23Having this 1-trip-let 2-trip-let
3-trip-let 4-trip-let -
8:23 - 8:24Makes it kind of weird.
-
8:24 - 8:27It disguises the fact that it's a 4 note pattern.
-
8:27 - 8:35. . .
-
8:35 - 8:36and then to finish it we've got.
-
8:36 - 8:42. . .
-
8:42 - 8:44We are just shifting out of the position
for that last note. -
8:44 - 8:45Nice and slow.
-
8:45 - 8:59. . .
-
8:59 - 9:00Every note is picked.
-
9:00 - 9:01A little faster.
-
9:01 - 9:10. . .
-
9:10 - 9:11and a little faster again.
-
9:11 - 9:18. . .
-
9:19 - 9:21Get cracking on those,
-
9:21 - 9:25make sure that you are really confident
using the licks and with the scale -
9:25 - 9:27before we get into the next lesson
-
9:27 - 9:31which is going to be POSITION 5.
Ride up the dust here.
