This time we are here for Lesson BL-024.

In which we are going to be
checking out some licks

using position 4 of minor pentatonic
and the Blue scale.

The licks that we are going to be doing are these.

So lick number one sounds like this

I find it kind of fast,
you can play this slowly as well.

And lick number 5 is this one.
A pretty weird one

. . .

Which I will explain a little bit more
when we go to a close up.

So let's start off.

Close up of lick 1, here we go !

Ok. Lick no1 was this

. . .

Now this one's a really really cool little trick here.

What we are doing is
putting the 1st finger in the 12th fret,

2nd finger in the 13th fret

and we are going to put a curl
just on the 13th.

Rhythm for this is going 1 2 3 and 4 and

So first two is beat 1 and beat 2.

Now, normally my fingers would be
kind of holding over

but here I'm just pulling them back,
so you can see.

1st finger staying where it is,
and the 2nd finger is doing a little curl.

. . .

Then we finish 3rd finger is now going
on the 14th fret of the 3rd string.

We are putting it down
a little bit flatter than normal .

because it's going to play there

and then roll onto its tip
to play the 14th fret of the 4th string

. . .

Then 1st finger on 12th fret 3rd string

. . .

And finishing back on the root note.
Slowly :

A little faster

. . .

And faster again

. . .

Now lick no2 here is this

. . .

Now this one, we are starting here
with the bend with the 3rd finger 15th fret

and then while we are holding a bend,

we are going to sneak
our little finger underneath

to play the 15th fret of the thinnest string.

. . .

Of course we've got to release in there, as well.

So we are doing a bend,

. . .

play the note

. . .

and you can see at the time I'm hitting that one,
I'm also muting the bent note

but I'am muting it
with the picking hand.

. . .

So at that point you can hear
the bend disappears

and that's because I'm allowing my picking hand
to touch that second string.

Now, once its touch to the note is finished

I can then bring it back down again,
ready for the next bend

. . .

Definitely worth practising,
just that a little bit.

Now the next part

. . .

We've got 15th to 13th flick-off
using 3rd finger to 1st finger

. . .

2nd finger on the14th fret 3rd string

. . .

then 3rd finger back on 15th

. . .

finishing with a curl
on the 13th fret with the 1st finger

. . .

The whole lick

Into Lick no3.

Lick no3 is starting with a tone bend
from the note G,

3rd finger 15th fret
of the thinnest string

. . .

Then it's coming back down,

so again we're using our picking hand
to mute the strings at the top

so that we don't get seagulls.

Here we're using a 3rd finger to 1st finger flick-off,
15th fret to 12th fret.

. . .

3rd finger is moving over
to the 15th fret of the 2nd string .

and then back to 1st finger
on the thinnest string.

Now at this point,
we are using 2nd finger now

on the note C which is the 13th fret,
which gets a curl,

. . .

and finishing with the 3rd finger
on the root note,

which is 14th fret 3rd string.

. . .

Nice and slow

. . .

Little faster

. . .

and it can be quite fast.

. . .

Lick No4.
We are using a blue note again

right of the back
with that hammer-on and flick-off

. . .

So that's the 12th fret of the 4th string,

hammering on 2nd finger into the 13th,
flicking it off again

. . .

then picking little finger
15th fret on the 5th string

. . .

Now we've got here
a little string of hammer-ons .

So use it going through the blue note,

which is 1st, 2nd, 3rd fingers,
12th,13th 14th frets on the D string

. . .

Onto the G string,
we've got 1st finger 14th fret

and we are hammering on the 3rd finger
onto the note A

which is the 14th fret of the G string.

Flick here it off again back to note G,
first finger

and we are finishing off there
with a little 2nd finger curl

. . .

and finishing back on the root note,
so we have this

. . .

A very nice little lick!

Again nice and slow

. . .

A little faster

. . .

Faster again

. . .

And, really fast!

Lick no5, this one's using a little trick
that we use sometimes while we are playing.

It's called playing in 4ths
where we play the notes of the scale.

I think of it as 2 sides like (plays)
the 2nd side and the first side.

We are playing these 2 notes like

. . .

That's the pattern.

So if you thought of it like a little box,
we are kind of going up the box,

back and then down the box.

It's kind of going around
in a little square there.

. . .

And then you could do the same thing
on the next set of strings.

. . .

And the next set.

. . .

You see this is a little pattern.

. . .

And that's as far as we take here
with this pattern,

but I'am also that would normally be played
as either sixteenth notes or eighth notes,

because it's a 4 note pattern.

But to make a little bit more interesting
I have turned them into triplets.

So you get a quite a different feeling.

Having this 1-trip-let 2-trip-let
3-trip-let 4-trip-let

Makes it kind of weird.

It disguises the fact that it's a 4 note pattern.

and then to finish it we've got.

. . .

We are just shifting out of the position
for that last note.

Nice and slow.

Every note is picked.

A little faster.

. . .

and a little faster again.

. . .

Get cracking on those,

make sure that you are really confident
using the licks and with the scale

before we get into the next lesson
