What does my voice look like? | Omer Stier | TEDxTelAvivUniversity

0:15 - 0:18Have you ever wondered
what the sound of your voice looks like? -
0:18 - 0:19Huh, I bet you're wondering
-
0:19 - 0:22why this guy is wondering
what the sound of his voice looks like. -
0:22 - 0:24It's just ... mute.
-
0:25 - 0:27Sorry, moot point.
-
0:27 - 0:30I mean, voice can't be seen,
can hardly be heard. -
0:30 - 0:31Every time I'm talking,
-
0:31 - 0:34you start listening to yourself,
you start tuning me out. -
0:34 - 0:35Are you even here?
-
0:35 - 0:36Are you hearing me?
-
0:36 - 0:37Are you listening to me?
-
0:39 - 0:42Sometimes, it's like
I've got nothing to say, right? -
0:42 - 0:44Everybody knows how this feels.
-
0:44 - 0:46It's like trying to make
something out of nothing -
0:46 - 0:48just for the purpose of justifying myself,
-
0:48 - 0:49but even then ...
-
0:49 - 0:51I just don't see it.
-
0:52 - 0:54I could be mad, glad, happy, or sad.
-
0:54 - 0:56That wouldn't make
an ounce of a difference. -
0:56 - 0:57Your ignorance, making me restless
-
0:57 - 1:00and thinking it's best
just to turn around, -
1:00 - 1:01walk away, have a great day,
-
1:01 - 1:04but you won't hear, feel,
or see that anyway, so, -
1:04 - 1:05I'm lost.
-
1:06 - 1:07And yeah, I've got a question.
-
1:07 - 1:08What does my voice look like?
-
1:08 - 1:10What does my voice look like?
-
1:11 - 1:15A kid grows up learning how to walk,
learning how to act, learning how to talk, -
1:15 - 1:17only never to be seen,
only maybe to be heard, -
1:17 - 1:20only to have half of his ideas
be shared into the world. -
1:20 - 1:23And he gets lost even more
between social media, -
1:23 - 1:24schools with no voice.
-
1:24 - 1:26Voice becomes type and seen,
-
1:26 - 1:29looking like words and letters on a page,
in a screen, in a phone. -
1:29 - 1:32He either has to join all of that,
or he'd be left alone. -
1:32 - 1:35No other choices
and all these other voices, -
1:35 - 1:37but I'm still looking for mine.
-
1:37 - 1:38What does mine look like?
-
1:39 - 1:41Humph, and that kid ...
-
1:41 - 1:42that kid grew up to be me.
-
1:42 - 1:44With support from all my family,
-
1:44 - 1:46I learned to see my voice in the physical,
-
1:46 - 1:48in the lyrical,
in the true meaning of it all. -
1:48 - 1:49And my voice ...
-
1:49 - 1:51my voice looks like this:
-
1:51 - 1:53movements that come from my mind
to these footprints, -
1:53 - 1:55to these dancers, these artists,
-
1:55 - 1:57to these stages, and these crowds,
-
1:57 - 2:00to all these people who never listen
or see us or care, but cheer so loud, -
2:00 - 2:03who know not to listen,
not to give half a chance. -
2:03 - 2:04I'm one of the lucky ones.
-
2:04 - 2:06I could put this all in a dance,
-
2:06 - 2:08put this all in the moves!
-
2:08 - 2:10The music that my voice
is making right now, -
2:10 - 2:13can you see how I'm being seen right now?
-
2:14 - 2:16Finally, my idea is getting through.
-
2:16 - 2:19I got you stopped for a split second
and control your view. -
2:19 - 2:21Your thoughts, your attention is mine.
-
2:21 - 2:23And all I can hope for
is that you open your mind -
2:23 - 2:25and try to understand one thing:
-
2:25 - 2:27we have just been trying
-
2:27 - 2:28not only to be heard
-
2:29 - 2:30but also to be seen.
-
2:33 - 2:35(Applause)
- Title:
- What does my voice look like? | Omer Stier | TEDxTelAvivUniversity
- Description:
-
Do you know what your voice looks like? Would it look choreographed into dance moves? This physical spoken word testimony written by Omer Stier and performed by his own dance troupe, Anewindow Dance Company, is about how it's getting so hard to find our voices in society today. Through dance, Omer has let us in so we can connect vision, sound, and words for just a couple of minutes in order to experience his personal endeavors and wake ourselves up just enough to actually see his voice.
Omer Stier is one of Israels most noted choreographers. Omer has toured Europe and Israel with his dance troupe, Anewindow Dance Company. He has choreographed and staged shows for a variety of artists, dance festivals and international dance shows in Israel. For 16 years, he has been mentoring and growing generations of dancers, dance teachers, and choreographers in his own dance studio, Dancity Dance Studios.
