Architecture of the body, mind and soul | Lara Rubin Alexiou | TEDxScranton
-
0:05 - 0:11I first came to yoga over a decade ago
because I was missing something - -
0:11 - 0:14like a word on the tip of my tongue
-
0:14 - 0:19or the memory of a dream
that I just couldn't quite recall. -
0:19 - 0:23I was searching for an answer
without really knowing the question. -
0:23 - 0:24And for some reason,
-
0:24 - 0:28I thought that I would find the answer
to this unknown riddle -
0:28 - 0:31by attending yoga classes.
-
0:31 - 0:34I somehow hoped
that through yoga practice, -
0:34 - 0:36I would start to feel better
-
0:36 - 0:40even though I really couldn't tell you
what it was that felt wrong. -
0:41 - 0:42Well, I soon discovered
-
0:42 - 0:49that the void I was hoping to fill
was that of my own soul. -
0:49 - 0:53My inherent desire to reconnect
with this vital part of myself -
0:53 - 0:55ultimately fueled my search
-
0:55 - 0:59and led me into the yoga room
and onto my mat. -
0:59 - 1:02Now, I'm sure when you hear
the word "yoga," -
1:02 - 1:04a few things probably come to mind.
-
1:04 - 1:06Flexibility often comes to mind.
-
1:06 - 1:08Stress relief often comes to mind.
-
1:08 - 1:12And if you have a little more exposure,
a little more experience, -
1:12 - 1:14something about union -
-
1:14 - 1:17because yoga is often described
as meaning union - -
1:17 - 1:22and maybe something about
a body, mind and spirit connection -
1:22 - 1:24may also come to mind.
-
1:24 - 1:30But what yoga really does
is provide a house for the human soul. -
1:31 - 1:37Yoga teaches that your body is a living
and breathing piece of architecture, -
1:37 - 1:40designed specifically for you
and no one else -
1:40 - 1:45for the one purpose of housing your soul.
-
1:45 - 1:46And it also teaches
-
1:46 - 1:50that when the body is a neglected
and crumbling structure, -
1:50 - 1:53the soul has no interest
in residing there. -
1:53 - 1:55So through the process of yoga,
-
1:55 - 2:00I learned to rebuild my body
to house my soul. -
2:00 - 2:03Yoga teaches that it's through the soul -
-
2:03 - 2:07that through the body
and the soul connection -
2:07 - 2:11that the body really gets
to manifest itself here on earth. -
2:12 - 2:15So how do we know
when the soul is at home? -
2:15 - 2:17Well, let's look at the breath.
-
2:17 - 2:23Connecting to the breath draws us
out of our heads and into our bodies. -
2:23 - 2:27Through yogic breath control,
we learn to quiet the mind, -
2:27 - 2:29to clear our thoughts,
-
2:29 - 2:31to have quiet emotions
-
2:31 - 2:34and to be present in the body.
-
2:34 - 2:37When I'm disconnected from my breath
and my mind and my body, -
2:37 - 2:39I lack energy.
-
2:39 - 2:40I lack inspiration.
-
2:40 - 2:43My spark is gone.
-
2:43 - 2:47And with it really goes
my creativity and my personal power. -
2:47 - 2:50Instead of happily housing my soul,
-
2:50 - 2:56I'm much more apt to be housing
resistance, judgment, even complacency. -
2:56 - 2:59My imagination gets lost.
-
2:59 - 3:03When I'm connected
to my body and my breath, -
3:03 - 3:06my inspiration shows up.
-
3:06 - 3:09Think of the last time you were inspired.
-
3:09 - 3:11I bet you had more energy,
-
3:11 - 3:14felt physically at your best
-
3:14 - 3:17and had clear and focused thoughts.
-
3:17 - 3:19I bet the last time you were inspired,
-
3:19 - 3:22you didn't see obstacles
or get discouraged. -
3:22 - 3:28I bet you had really clear solutions
to manifest your creative ideas. -
3:28 - 3:32These are the moments
when our souls are truly at home -
3:32 - 3:33and are shining through.
-
3:33 - 3:37When the architecture
of the body and the mind are weak, -
3:37 - 3:41the soul cannot
manifest itself here on earth. -
3:41 - 3:43I know this personally
-
3:43 - 3:46because in 2003, I was diagnosed
-
3:46 - 3:49with the autoimmune disease
multiple sclerosis. -
3:49 - 3:52MS attacks the nervous system.
-
3:52 - 3:55It has no known cause and no known cure.
-
3:55 - 3:58At best, it causes nerve pain.
-
3:58 - 4:01It causes muscle fatigue
and severe muscle weakness. -
4:01 - 4:05And at its worst,
it can be completely debilitating, -
4:05 - 4:06robbing you of your mobility,
-
4:06 - 4:08impairing your vision
-
4:08 - 4:12and even breaking down
basic cognitive functions. -
4:12 - 4:16My 25-year-old body
literally began to break down, -
4:16 - 4:22and my creative soul
began to pack up and move out. -
4:22 - 4:27Pain takes us away from the current moment
-
4:27 - 4:30and even further away from our souls.
-
4:30 - 4:37When we're in pain, it's really difficult
to feel the beauty of being alive. -
4:37 - 4:39When I was first diagnosed,
-
4:39 - 4:42walking was very difficult
and very painful. -
4:42 - 4:45Stairs were almost impossible,
-
4:45 - 4:48and I was blind in my right eye.
-
4:48 - 4:52I had zero energy,
but I maintained my yoga practice. -
4:52 - 4:55There were days, many days,
I didn't even go to work, -
4:55 - 4:58but I daily attended my yoga practice,
-
4:58 - 5:02mostly because I really
didn't know what else to do. -
5:02 - 5:07I took medication,
but yoga really spoke to my soul. -
5:07 - 5:10When I was in practice, my yoga practice,
-
5:10 - 5:15it gave me tools
to fortify my physical structure, -
5:15 - 5:20but it gave my soul a place
to feel secure, to feel safe -
5:20 - 5:21and to shine through.
-
5:21 - 5:23When I was in my yoga practice,
-
5:23 - 5:29I felt safe and I felt strong
and I felt optimistic. -
5:29 - 5:33So if yoga helps us create
this wonderful house for the soul, -
5:33 - 5:39why is it that we do associate it
with flexibility and with stress control? -
5:39 - 5:44Well, that's because they really speak
to the same thing and go hand in hand. -
5:44 - 5:49When the body's flexible,
we have more room for creativity. -
5:49 - 5:52You have greater range
of motion, more mobility. -
5:52 - 5:57This literally means
that things are now within your reach -
5:57 - 6:00that were not possible before.
-
6:00 - 6:03Pain makes everything contract:
-
6:03 - 6:05your body contracts,
-
6:05 - 6:07your mind contracts.
-
6:07 - 6:13The square footage of your world
literally gets smaller. -
6:13 - 6:16The flexibility I learned
through my yoga practice -
6:16 - 6:21started to open up my body
into ways I never thought possible -
6:21 - 6:25and certainly into postures
I never even knew existed before. -
6:25 - 6:29And as my body and my flexibility
started to open up, -
6:29 - 6:31my mind started to open up.
-
6:31 - 6:35I started to see more possibilities,
-
6:35 - 6:37my pain subsided,
-
6:37 - 6:41and my soul finally
had some room to breathe. -
6:41 - 6:46It finally had some room
to start manifesting itself again. -
6:46 - 6:47And as for stress control -
-
6:47 - 6:51well, when you're in a yoga practice
and you're really focused on a posture - -
6:51 - 6:53you're trying to balance on one leg
-
6:53 - 6:56or maneuver yourself
into these different postures - -
6:56 - 6:59you're completely focused
on the moment at hand. -
6:59 - 7:04And in those times when you're connected
to your body and your breath, -
7:04 - 7:09there is just no room
for any anxious or stressful thoughts. -
7:09 - 7:14So today, it's been over 12 years
since I began my yoga practice, -
7:14 - 7:18and it's been over 11 years
since my MS diagnosis, -
7:18 - 7:21and I remain asymptomatic.
-
7:21 - 7:23I no longer take medication:
-
7:23 - 7:25I take yoga instead.
-
7:25 - 7:30It keeps my body strong,
and it keeps my soul alive. -
7:30 - 7:37In yoga, you are the architect
who designs the house for your soul. -
7:37 - 7:39Make it strong.
-
7:39 - 7:40Make it beautiful.
-
7:40 - 7:45And make it a living
and breathing expression -
7:45 - 7:51worthy of your most creative,
innovative and loving self. -
7:51 - 7:52Thank you.
-
7:52 - 7:54(Applause)
