Architecture of the body, mind and soul | Lara Rubin Alexiou | TEDxScranton

  • 0:05 - 0:11
I first came to yoga over a decade ago
because I was missing something -
  • 0:11 - 0:14
like a word on the tip of my tongue
  • 0:14 - 0:19
or the memory of a dream
that I just couldn't quite recall.
  • 0:19 - 0:23
I was searching for an answer
    without really knowing the question.
  • 0:23 - 0:24
    And for some reason,
  • 0:24 - 0:28
I thought that I would find the answer
    to this unknown riddle
  • 0:28 - 0:31
    by attending yoga classes.
  • 0:31 - 0:34
    I somehow hoped
    that through yoga practice,
  • 0:34 - 0:36
I would start to feel better
  • 0:36 - 0:40
even though I really couldn't tell you
what it was that felt wrong.
  • 0:41 - 0:42
    Well, I soon discovered
  • 0:42 - 0:49
that the void I was hoping to fill
was that of my own soul.
  • 0:49 - 0:53
    My inherent desire to reconnect
with this vital part of myself
  • 0:53 - 0:55
    ultimately fueled my search
  • 0:55 - 0:59
and led me into the yoga room
    and onto my mat.
  • 0:59 - 1:02
Now, I'm sure when you hear
    the word "yoga,"
  • 1:02 - 1:04
a few things probably come to mind.
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    Flexibility often comes to mind.
  • 1:06 - 1:08
Stress relief often comes to mind.
  • 1:08 - 1:12
And if you have a little more exposure,
    a little more experience,
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    something about union -
  • 1:14 - 1:17
    because yoga is often described
    as meaning union -
  • 1:17 - 1:22
    and maybe something about
a body, mind and spirit connection
  • 1:22 - 1:24
    may also come to mind.
  • 1:24 - 1:30
    But what yoga really does
is provide a house for the human soul.
  • 1:31 - 1:37
Yoga teaches that your body is a living
    and breathing piece of architecture,
  • 1:37 - 1:40
    designed specifically for you
    and no one else
  • 1:40 - 1:45
for the one purpose of housing your soul.
  • 1:45 - 1:46
    And it also teaches
  • 1:46 - 1:50
that when the body is a neglected
    and crumbling structure,
  • 1:50 - 1:53
    the soul has no interest
    in residing there.
  • 1:53 - 1:55
So through the process of yoga,
  • 1:55 - 2:00
I learned to rebuild my body
    to house my soul.
  • 2:00 - 2:03
Yoga teaches that it's through the soul -
  • 2:03 - 2:07
    that through the body
    and the soul connection
  • 2:07 - 2:11
    that the body really gets
to manifest itself here on earth.
  • 2:12 - 2:15
    So how do we know
when the soul is at home?
  • 2:15 - 2:17
Well, let's look at the breath.
  • 2:17 - 2:23
Connecting to the breath draws us
out of our heads and into our bodies.
  • 2:23 - 2:27
    Through yogic breath control,
we learn to quiet the mind,
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    to clear our thoughts,
  • 2:29 - 2:31
    to have quiet emotions
  • 2:31 - 2:34
and to be present in the body.
  • 2:34 - 2:37
When I'm disconnected from my breath
and my mind and my body,
  • 2:37 - 2:39
    I lack energy.
  • 2:39 - 2:40
    I lack inspiration.
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    My spark is gone.
  • 2:43 - 2:47
    And with it really goes
my creativity and my personal power.
  • 2:47 - 2:50
Instead of happily housing my soul,
  • 2:50 - 2:56
I'm much more apt to be housing
    resistance, judgment, even complacency.
  • 2:56 - 2:59
    My imagination gets lost.
  • 2:59 - 3:03
    When I'm connected
to my body and my breath,
  • 3:03 - 3:06
    my inspiration shows up.
  • 3:06 - 3:09
Think of the last time you were inspired.
  • 3:09 - 3:11
I bet you had more energy,
  • 3:11 - 3:14
    felt physically at your best
  • 3:14 - 3:17
and had clear and focused thoughts.
  • 3:17 - 3:19
I bet the last time you were inspired,
  • 3:19 - 3:22
    you didn't see obstacles
    or get discouraged.
  • 3:22 - 3:28
I bet you had really clear solutions
    to manifest your creative ideas.
  • 3:28 - 3:32
    These are the moments
when our souls are truly at home
  • 3:32 - 3:33
    and are shining through.
  • 3:33 - 3:37
    When the architecture
of the body and the mind are weak,
  • 3:37 - 3:41
    the soul cannot
    manifest itself here on earth.
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    I know this personally
  • 3:43 - 3:46
because in 2003, I was diagnosed
  • 3:46 - 3:49
    with the autoimmune disease
    multiple sclerosis.
  • 3:49 - 3:52
    MS attacks the nervous system.
  • 3:52 - 3:55
It has no known cause and no known cure.
  • 3:55 - 3:58
At best, it causes nerve pain.
  • 3:58 - 4:01
    It causes muscle fatigue
    and severe muscle weakness.
  • 4:01 - 4:05
    And at its worst,
    it can be completely debilitating,
  • 4:05 - 4:06
    robbing you of your mobility,
  • 4:06 - 4:08
    impairing your vision
  • 4:08 - 4:12
    and even breaking down
    basic cognitive functions.
  • 4:12 - 4:16
    My 25-year-old body
    literally began to break down,
  • 4:16 - 4:22
    and my creative soul
began to pack up and move out.
  • 4:22 - 4:27
Pain takes us away from the current moment
  • 4:27 - 4:30
and even further away from our souls.
  • 4:30 - 4:37
When we're in pain, it's really difficult
to feel the beauty of being alive.
  • 4:37 - 4:39
    When I was first diagnosed,
  • 4:39 - 4:42
    walking was very difficult
    and very painful.
  • 4:42 - 4:45
    Stairs were almost impossible,
  • 4:45 - 4:48
and I was blind in my right eye.
  • 4:48 - 4:52
    I had zero energy,
but I maintained my yoga practice.
  • 4:52 - 4:55
    There were days, many days,
I didn't even go to work,
  • 4:55 - 4:58
but I daily attended my yoga practice,
  • 4:58 - 5:02
    mostly because I really
didn't know what else to do.
  • 5:02 - 5:07
    I took medication,
but yoga really spoke to my soul.
  • 5:07 - 5:10
When I was in practice, my yoga practice,
  • 5:10 - 5:15
    it gave me tools
    to fortify my physical structure,
  • 5:15 - 5:20
but it gave my soul a place
to feel secure, to feel safe
  • 5:20 - 5:21
    and to shine through.
  • 5:21 - 5:23
When I was in my yoga practice,
  • 5:23 - 5:29
I felt safe and I felt strong
    and I felt optimistic.
  • 5:29 - 5:33
So if yoga helps us create
this wonderful house for the soul,
  • 5:33 - 5:39
why is it that we do associate it
with flexibility and with stress control?
  • 5:39 - 5:44
Well, that's because they really speak
to the same thing and go hand in hand.
  • 5:44 - 5:49
    When the body's flexible,
we have more room for creativity.
  • 5:49 - 5:52
    You have greater range
    of motion, more mobility.
  • 5:52 - 5:57
    This literally means
that things are now within your reach
  • 5:57 - 6:00
    that were not possible before.
  • 6:00 - 6:03
    Pain makes everything contract:
  • 6:03 - 6:05
    your body contracts,
  • 6:05 - 6:07
    your mind contracts.
  • 6:07 - 6:13
The square footage of your world
    literally gets smaller.
  • 6:13 - 6:16
    The flexibility I learned
    through my yoga practice
  • 6:16 - 6:21
started to open up my body
into ways I never thought possible
  • 6:21 - 6:25
    and certainly into postures
I never even knew existed before.
  • 6:25 - 6:29
And as my body and my flexibility
    started to open up,
  • 6:29 - 6:31
my mind started to open up.
  • 6:31 - 6:35
I started to see more possibilities,
  • 6:35 - 6:37
    my pain subsided,
  • 6:37 - 6:41
    and my soul finally
    had some room to breathe.
  • 6:41 - 6:46
    It finally had some room
    to start manifesting itself again.
  • 6:46 - 6:47
And as for stress control -
  • 6:47 - 6:51
well, when you're in a yoga practice
and you're really focused on a posture -
  • 6:51 - 6:53
you're trying to balance on one leg
  • 6:53 - 6:56
    or maneuver yourself
    into these different postures -
  • 6:56 - 6:59
    you're completely focused
    on the moment at hand.
  • 6:59 - 7:04
And in those times when you're connected
to your body and your breath,
  • 7:04 - 7:09
    there is just no room
for any anxious or stressful thoughts.
  • 7:09 - 7:14
So today, it's been over 12 years
since I began my yoga practice,
  • 7:14 - 7:18
and it's been over 11 years
    since my MS diagnosis,
  • 7:18 - 7:21
    and I remain asymptomatic.
  • 7:21 - 7:23
    I no longer take medication:
  • 7:23 - 7:25
    I take yoga instead.
  • 7:25 - 7:30
    It keeps my body strong,
and it keeps my soul alive.
  • 7:30 - 7:37
In yoga, you are the architect
who designs the house for your soul.
  • 7:37 - 7:39
    Make it strong.
  • 7:39 - 7:40
    Make it beautiful.
  • 7:40 - 7:45
    And make it a living
    and breathing expression
  • 7:45 - 7:51
    worthy of your most creative,
    innovative and loving self.
  • 7:51 - 7:52
    Thank you.
  • 7:52 - 7:54
    (Applause)
