Racism | Susana Milanes | TEDxPascoCountySchools
-
0:10 - 0:15The assumption all members of each race
possess characteristics and abilities -
0:15 - 0:16is referred to as racism.
-
0:16 - 0:19It can be defined as the hatred or belief
-
0:19 - 0:22another person is less than human
because of his skin color. -
0:22 - 0:25For example,
"An Asian has to be really smart," -
0:25 - 0:28or "An African-American
has to be less socially refined." -
0:30 - 0:34Skin color doesn't define any human,
so no one should be pressured -
0:34 - 0:36to behave a certain way
based on physical appearance. -
0:37 - 0:40The sad truth people don't seem to realize
when they're being racist -
0:40 - 0:42and some people even think
-
0:42 - 0:46when they've positive preconceptions based
on skin color they're not being racist. -
0:46 - 0:48But even if your mark
isn't necessarily negative, -
0:48 - 0:51that doesn't make
the statement acceptable. -
0:51 - 0:53According to Dr. Naomi Priest,
-
0:53 - 0:57a senior research fellow
in Child Public Health, -
0:57 - 0:59and leader of the Anti-Racism Program
-
0:59 - 1:02says, "Racism can influence
the health and well-being -
1:02 - 1:04in children and teens."
-
1:04 - 1:06Children and teens
who have exposure to racism -
1:06 - 1:10can have poor mental health,
anxiety, and depression due to it. -
1:10 - 1:14A study by the University of Melbourne
says they're 461 links -
1:14 - 1:16between racism and the youth.
-
1:16 - 1:18Teens becoming mentally unhealthy
-
1:18 - 1:21due the racist remarks
or what society continues to say to them, -
1:21 - 1:23is flat out disgusting.
-
1:23 - 1:29Speaking of depression,
it's the number one cause for suicide. -
1:29 - 1:32Suicide is the act
of taking one's life on purpose. -
1:32 - 1:35It often occurs when one sees
no other option of escaping -
1:35 - 1:37but to end their life.
-
1:38 - 1:41Racism causes depression,
and depression causes suicide. -
1:41 - 1:45In other words,
racism can potentially cause suicide. -
1:55 - 1:58Jade Macklin, a blogger
with [inaudible] and racism, says, -
1:58 - 2:01"Due to discrimination
amongst groups of people, -
2:01 - 2:051,572 people commit suicide every year.
-
2:05 - 2:07This number will eventually increase."
-
2:08 - 2:12The question we all continue to ask
is why are people racist anyways? -
2:13 - 2:16According to humanrights. gov,
the main reasons people are racists -
2:16 - 2:19is because they're either one,
too quick to judge, -
2:19 - 2:22two, like to blame others
for their problems, -
2:22 - 2:25or three, take on the views
of the people around them. -
2:25 - 2:29They like to be stereotypical,
and that's what causes racism. -
2:29 - 2:32People are quick to judge,
because they like to label people. -
2:32 - 2:35Some even take on the views
of the people around them, -
2:35 - 2:40like children taking racial opinions
from their parents. -
2:42 - 2:44Children aren't born racist,
they're taught to be. -
2:44 - 2:47Parents should allow their children
to choose their own ways -
2:47 - 2:50instead of filling their children's
minds with negativity. -
2:50 - 2:53What if someone walked up to you
and started pointing out -
2:53 - 2:56how your skin color wasn't
their personal preference? -
2:56 - 2:57How would you feel?
-
2:58 - 3:01When people make preconceptions
based on skin color, -
3:01 - 3:05they're implying that if he or she isn't
that way, it's wrong. -
3:07 - 3:11When they're looked down upon because
they aren't what people expect of them, -
3:11 - 3:14it could cause them to feel worthless
or as if they don't mean anything. -
3:14 - 3:17It most definitely isn't wrong to not be
of what people expect of you. -
3:17 - 3:21That is what we're saying
when we make these racial remarks. -
3:22 - 3:26Consequently, we need to abolish
all racial preconceptions, -
3:26 - 3:28negative and positive.
-
3:28 - 3:32They're multiple ways to stop
these insulting suggestions from recurring -
3:32 - 3:35and one obvious way is
to simply tell someone what they're saying -
3:35 - 3:37to help them be aware.
-
3:37 - 3:39Another is to just create
a peaceful protest -
3:39 - 3:42to help get your point across
without any violence. -
3:43 - 3:48Anything that suggest a person possesses
a specific ability or trait -
3:48 - 3:49is unacceptable.
-
3:49 - 3:51But the more we disregard the remarks,
-
3:51 - 3:54the less likely
someone will stop saying them. -
3:55 - 3:58And the more we continue to laugh
and allow our friends to say these, -
3:58 - 4:01the more teens are being harmed.
-
4:06 - 4:08This issue is having
a harmful effect on teens, -
4:08 - 4:11and it's time we put
a stop to it as a whole. -
4:11 - 4:15As I've said, racism not only affects
adults but teens too. -
4:16 - 4:20Even though some people don't seem
to realize when they're being racist, -
4:20 - 4:21it doesn't make a difference.
-
4:21 - 4:24We all need to learn
to be respectful human beings -
4:24 - 4:26to everyone around us
no matter what skin color. -
4:26 - 4:29Just like the teens
from Ferguson, Missouri said, -
4:29 - 4:31"Racism isn't over,
but I'm over racism." -
4:31 - 4:33Teens shouldn’t be in an unhealthy state
-
4:33 - 4:36due to someone who feels
the need to be racist. -
4:36 - 4:40Teens should be getting a good education,
playing sports, and making new friends -
4:40 - 4:43not wondering what racial remarks
will be thrown at them today.
