JUSTIN Method Training Exercises 3 (Guitar Lesson IM-138) How to play IF Stage 3
-
0:10 - 0:12Hi! How are you doing? Justin here.
-
0:12 - 0:14Welcome to IM-138
-
0:14 - 0:17which is the "Just Use Sound To
Improve Now" section. -
0:17 - 0:19Now what we're doing this time,
-
0:19 - 0:21we've got a couple of new things.
-
0:21 - 0:23The first thing in 3A:
-
0:23 - 0:25we're going to be checking out
-
0:25 - 0:26just major barre chords.
-
0:26 - 0:29This is for the chord
progression transcription. -
0:29 - 0:31Now, I'll just be using
-
0:31 - 0:32. . .
-
0:32 - 0:34E shape major barre chords
-
0:34 - 0:35. . .
-
0:35 - 0:37and A shape major barre chords.
-
0:37 - 0:38And the idea here of course:
-
0:38 - 0:40you need to find the root note
-
0:40 - 0:40and then...
-
0:40 - 0:43the kind of the part of
the challenge this time -
0:43 - 0:44is figuring out whether a chord
-
0:44 - 0:47is being played with a six-string root
-
0:47 - 0:48or a fifth-string root.
-
0:48 - 0:51Because now if you start to
listen to, say, a B-chord, -
0:51 - 0:54this is a B-chord with an
E shape barre chord -
0:54 - 0:56. . .
-
0:56 - 0:58and this is a B chord with
an A shape barre chord. -
0:58 - 1:00. . .
-
1:00 - 1:02and you can kinda hear
-
1:02 - 1:05they're different because
the E shape (plays) -
1:05 - 1:06uses all of the strings.
-
1:06 - 1:08All the six strings are ringing,
-
1:08 - 1:11and you get the high
note at the top as well. -
1:11 - 1:13With the A shape
-
1:13 - 1:15. . .
-
1:15 - 1:16you don't have as high a note
-
1:16 - 1:17at the top.
-
1:17 - 1:19So what I want you to do
-
1:19 - 1:21is when you're doing the
transcriptions for that, -
1:21 - 1:23find the root note and then see
-
1:23 - 1:25if you can work out
which chord shape it is. -
1:25 - 1:28So listen closely to what
I'm playing, on the...- -
1:28 - 1:31because of course you have got to
listen to the mp3 and all that, -
1:31 - 1:32and this isn't the lesson,
-
1:32 - 1:34the lesson part is the listening
to the audio track -
1:34 - 1:37and then listen to is it this one (plays)
-
1:37 - 1:39or this one? (plays)
-
1:39 - 1:42Or if it's an F chord,
is it this one (plays) -
1:42 - 1:44or is it this one? (plays)
-
1:44 - 1:46So, play one and play the other
-
1:46 - 1:49and I'm sure, it will be kind
of obvious which one it is. -
1:49 - 1:50So that's the important thing
-
1:50 - 1:52we're just dealing with majors,
-
1:52 - 1:54don't think there's any minors
that I'm going to sneak in -
1:54 - 1:56there's just majors,
so really listening to -
1:56 - 1:59whether it's a sixth string
root or a fifth string root. -
1:59 - 2:01Very important lesson that one.
-
2:01 - 2:05For 3B we're transcribing
an eighth note solo. -
2:05 - 2:07
It's using, in fact using -
2:07 - 2:09the A-minor pentatonic scale.
-
2:09 - 2:10We've just got a little bit more
-
2:10 - 2:13rhythmic interest in it now.
-
2:13 - 2:15So if you're going to have a listen to it,
-
2:15 - 2:16it's still just the A minor pentatonic.
-
2:16 - 2:17So you know,
-
2:17 - 2:19I'm already telling you
what the notes are, -
2:19 - 2:21where you can find the notes easily.
-
2:21 - 2:24If you can, a really cool thing to do
-
2:24 - 2:26would be to add the rhythm to the tab,
-
2:26 - 2:27so tab out the notes first
-
2:27 - 2:29and then add a rhythm above the notes.
-
2:29 - 2:32Now we've already done
enough rhythmic dictation -
2:32 - 2:34in the last two foundation levels
-
2:34 - 2:35for you to be able to do that.
-
2:35 - 2:37So you should have the skills,
-
2:37 - 2:38so let's see if you can apply
-
2:38 - 2:41that rhythmic dictation skills
now to a lead guitar -
2:41 - 2:42that you're going to transcribe.
-
2:42 - 2:44Because that's kind of really a part,
-
2:44 - 2:46a big part of the point, really,
-
2:46 - 2:48for this rhythmic dictation
-
2:48 - 2:49is being able to apply to tabs
-
2:49 - 2:51when you're transcribing your own solos.
-
2:51 - 2:52Very, very useful skill, indeed.
-
2:52 - 2:57And for 3C it's almost exactly
the same as 2C was, -
2:57 - 2:59but a little bit more tricky.
-
2:59 - 3:01So we've got a few more syncopated bits
-
3:01 - 3:04so more rests that are
going to fall on the beat -
3:04 - 3:07and therefore more notes
that are NOT on the beat. -
3:07 - 3:10So, hopefully you've got a
little bit more of an idea -
3:10 - 3:12of how to write these rhythms down
-
3:12 - 3:13from the last foundation.
-
3:13 - 3:15So if you're stuck you can check out my
-
3:15 - 3:19"Understanding Rhythmic Notation"
PDF book thing, -
3:19 - 3:21which I co-wrote with my
friend Justin Scott, -
3:21 - 3:22who's a drummer,
-
3:22 - 3:24really good rhythm teacher,
-
3:24 - 3:25so that might be worth checking out
-
3:25 - 3:28if you're really getting into
this rhythmic dictation. -
3:28 - 3:30Very very valuable skill
rhythmic dictation -
3:30 - 3:32being able to understand rhythms.
-
3:32 - 3:33Teaches you a lot
-
3:33 - 3:35about your rhythm guitar skills as well.
-
3:35 - 3:36Very, very useful thing to do.
-
3:36 - 3:39But, as I, as the title suggests,
-
3:39 - 3:41just use sound to improve now,
-
3:41 - 3:44so i'm not going to teach you
now in this video lesson. -
3:44 - 3:46I want you to go and download those mp3s,
-
3:46 - 3:47download the worksheets,
-
3:47 - 3:49and get stuck into learning
-
3:49 - 3:50just by using your ears.
-
3:50 - 3:51Have fun with that.
-
3:51 - 3:54See you for another lesson
sometime real soon. -
3:54 - 3:55Take care, bye-bye.
