JUSTIN Method Training Exercises 3 (Guitar Lesson IM-138) How to play IF Stage 3

  • 0:10 - 0:12
Hi! How are you doing? Justin here.
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    Welcome to IM-138
  • 0:14 - 0:17
which is the "Just Use Sound To
    Improve Now" section.
  • 0:17 - 0:19
Now what we're doing this time,
  • 0:19 - 0:21
we've got a couple of new things.
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    The first thing in 3A:
  • 0:23 - 0:25
we're going to be checking out
  • 0:25 - 0:26
    just major barre chords.
  • 0:26 - 0:29
    This is for the chord
    progression transcription.
  • 0:29 - 0:31
    Now, I'll just be using
  • 0:31 - 0:32
    . . .
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    E shape major barre chords
  • 0:34 - 0:35
    . . .
  • 0:35 - 0:37
and A shape major barre chords.
  • 0:37 - 0:38
And the idea here of course:
  • 0:38 - 0:40
you need to find the root note
  • 0:40 - 0:40
    and then...
  • 0:40 - 0:43
the kind of the part of
    the challenge this time
  • 0:43 - 0:44
is figuring out whether a chord
  • 0:44 - 0:47
is being played with a six-string root
  • 0:47 - 0:48
    or a fifth-string root.
  • 0:48 - 0:51
Because now if you start to
    listen to, say, a B-chord,
  • 0:51 - 0:54
this is a B-chord with an
    E shape barre chord
  • 0:54 - 0:56
    . . .
  • 0:56 - 0:58
and this is a B chord with
    an A shape barre chord.
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    . . .
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    and you can kinda hear
  • 1:02 - 1:05
    they're different because
    the E shape (plays)
  • 1:05 - 1:06
    uses all of the strings.
  • 1:06 - 1:08
All the six strings are ringing,
  • 1:08 - 1:11
    and you get the high
note at the top as well.
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    With the A shape
  • 1:13 - 1:15
    . . .
  • 1:15 - 1:16
you don't have as high a note
  • 1:16 - 1:17
    at the top.
  • 1:17 - 1:19
So what I want you to do
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    is when you're doing the
    transcriptions for that,
  • 1:21 - 1:23
find the root note and then see
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    if you can work out
    which chord shape it is.
  • 1:25 - 1:28
    So listen closely to what
    I'm playing, on the...-
  • 1:28 - 1:31
because of course you have got to
listen to the mp3 and all that,
  • 1:31 - 1:32
    and this isn't the lesson,
  • 1:32 - 1:34
the lesson part is the listening
    to the audio track
  • 1:34 - 1:37
and then listen to is it this one (plays)
  • 1:37 - 1:39
    or this one? (plays)
  • 1:39 - 1:42
Or if it's an F chord,
    is it this one (plays)
  • 1:42 - 1:44
or is it this one? (plays)
  • 1:44 - 1:46
So, play one and play the other
  • 1:46 - 1:49
and I'm sure, it will be kind
of obvious which one it is.
  • 1:49 - 1:50
    So that's the important thing
  • 1:50 - 1:52
    we're just dealing with majors,
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    don't think there's any minors
that I'm going to sneak in
  • 1:54 - 1:56
    there's just majors,
    so really listening to
  • 1:56 - 1:59
    whether it's a sixth string
root or a fifth string root.
  • 1:59 - 2:01
    Very important lesson that one.
  • 2:01 - 2:05
    For 3B we're transcribing
    an eighth note solo.
  • 2:05 - 2:07

    It's using, in fact using
  • 2:07 - 2:09
    the A-minor pentatonic scale.
  • 2:09 - 2:10
We've just got a little bit more
  • 2:10 - 2:13
    rhythmic interest in it now.
  • 2:13 - 2:15
So if you're going to have a listen to it,
  • 2:15 - 2:16
it's still just the A minor pentatonic.
  • 2:16 - 2:17
    So you know,
  • 2:17 - 2:19
    I'm already telling you
    what the notes are,
  • 2:19 - 2:21
where you can find the notes easily.
  • 2:21 - 2:24
If you can, a really cool thing to do
  • 2:24 - 2:26
would be to add the rhythm to the tab,
  • 2:26 - 2:27
so tab out the notes first
  • 2:27 - 2:29
and then add a rhythm above the notes.
  • 2:29 - 2:32
    Now we've already done
    enough rhythmic dictation
  • 2:32 - 2:34
in the last two foundation levels
  • 2:34 - 2:35
for you to be able to do that.
  • 2:35 - 2:37
So you should have the skills,
  • 2:37 - 2:38
so let's see if you can apply
  • 2:38 - 2:41
    that rhythmic dictation skills
    now to a lead guitar
  • 2:41 - 2:42
    that you're going to transcribe.
  • 2:42 - 2:44
Because that's kind of really a part,
  • 2:44 - 2:46
a big part of the point, really,
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    for this rhythmic dictation
  • 2:48 - 2:49
is being able to apply to tabs
  • 2:49 - 2:51
when you're transcribing your own solos.
  • 2:51 - 2:52
    Very, very useful skill, indeed.
  • 2:52 - 2:57
And for 3C it's almost exactly
    the same as 2C was,
  • 2:57 - 2:59
but a little bit more tricky.
  • 2:59 - 3:01
So we've got a few more syncopated bits
  • 3:01 - 3:04
    so more rests that are
going to fall on the beat
  • 3:04 - 3:07
    and therefore more notes
that are NOT on the beat.
  • 3:07 - 3:10
    So, hopefully you've got a
little bit more of an idea
  • 3:10 - 3:12
of how to write these rhythms down
  • 3:12 - 3:13
    from the last foundation.
  • 3:13 - 3:15
So if you're stuck you can check out my
  • 3:15 - 3:19
    "Understanding Rhythmic Notation"
    PDF book thing,
  • 3:19 - 3:21
    which I co-wrote with my
    friend Justin Scott,
  • 3:21 - 3:22
    who's a drummer,
  • 3:22 - 3:24
    really good rhythm teacher,
  • 3:24 - 3:25
so that might be worth checking out
  • 3:25 - 3:28
    if you're really getting into
    this rhythmic dictation.
  • 3:28 - 3:30
    Very very valuable skill
    rhythmic dictation
  • 3:30 - 3:32
    being able to understand rhythms.
  • 3:32 - 3:33
    Teaches you a lot
  • 3:33 - 3:35
about your rhythm guitar skills as well.
  • 3:35 - 3:36
Very, very useful thing to do.
  • 3:36 - 3:39
But, as I, as the title suggests,
  • 3:39 - 3:41
just use sound to improve now,
  • 3:41 - 3:44
so i'm not going to teach you
    now in this video lesson.
  • 3:44 - 3:46
I want you to go and download those mp3s,
  • 3:46 - 3:47
    download the worksheets,
  • 3:47 - 3:49
    and get stuck into learning
  • 3:49 - 3:50
    just by using your ears.
  • 3:50 - 3:51
    Have fun with that.
  • 3:51 - 3:54
    See you for another lesson
    sometime real soon.
  • 3:54 - 3:55
    Take care, bye-bye.
