Is there life after death?

  • 0:10 - 0:22
    (Bell)
  • 0:28 - 0:33
    (In French)
    So our question is:
    Is there life after death?
  • 0:37 - 0:41
    (In English)
    Our question is:
    Is there life after death?
  • 0:43 - 0:45
    Two persons, one question?
  • 0:45 - 0:47
    (Laughter)
  • 0:50 - 0:54
    Life is always with death
    at the same time,
  • 0:55 - 0:58
    not only before!
  • 1:04 - 1:05
    And...
  • 1:09 - 1:11
It cannot be separated from death.
  • 1:12 - 1:18
Where there is life, there is death.
And where there is death, there is life.
  • 1:19 - 1:23
And this needs a little bit of meditation.
  • 1:33 - 1:36
In Buddhism we speak of 'interbeing'.
  • 1:38 - 1:39
    'Interbeing'.
  • 1:40 - 1:43
    It means that you cannot
    be by yourself alone.
  • 1:44 - 1:48
You have to inter-be with the other side.
  • 1:50 - 1:52
It is like the left and the right.
  • 1:54 - 1:57
If the right is not there,
    the left cannot be.
  • 2:00 - 2:03
If the left is not there,
    the right cannot be.
  • 2:04 - 2:08
It is not possible to take
the left away from the right.
  • 2:09 - 2:13
It is not possible to take
the right away from the left.
  • 2:13 - 2:19
Suppose I ask one of you to come
and bring the left to the Lower Hamlet
  • 2:20 - 2:23
and one of you to bring
the right to the New Hamlet.
  • 2:23 - 2:24
    It is impossible!
  • 2:25 - 2:29
    The right and the left,
    they want to be together.
  • 2:30 - 2:33
Because without the other, you cannot be.
  • 2:34 - 2:35
    It is very clear.
  • 2:36 - 2:38
Like the above and the below.
  • 2:39 - 2:42
    The above cannot be there
    if there is no below.
  • 2:44 - 2:49
And that is what we call in Buddhism:
    'interbeing', 'interêtre'.
  • 2:51 - 2:54
They have to be there at the same time.
  • 2:55 - 2:57
    So when God said:
  • 2:59 - 3:01
    "Let the light be,"
  • 3:04 - 3:05
    the light said:
  • 3:05 - 3:08
    "Well I have to wait,
my God, I have to wait."
  • 3:09 - 3:11
God: "What are you waiting for?"
  • 3:12 - 3:16
Light: "I am waiting for darkness
    to manifest together."
  • 3:18 - 3:21
    Because light and darkness,
    they inter-are.
  • 3:24 - 3:27
    And God said:
    "Darkness is already there."
  • 3:27 - 3:30
    And the light said:
"In that case, I am already there."
  • 3:33 - 3:36
So that is true with good and evil,
  • 3:37 - 3:39
    before and after,
  • 3:40 - 3:42
    here and there,
    you and I.
  • 3:44 - 3:47
I cannot be there without you.
  • 3:50 - 3:54
    The lotus flower cannot
    be there without the mud.
  • 3:56 - 3:59
    Without the mud,
    there is no lotus possible.
  • 4:01 - 4:04
There is no happiness without suffering.
  • 4:06 - 4:09
There is no life without death.
  • 4:11 - 4:13
    And when a biologist observes...
  • 4:15 - 4:17
the body of a human being,
  • 4:20 - 4:24
he sees that life and death happen
at the same time in the body.
  • 4:26 - 4:28
    In this very moment,
  • 4:30 - 4:33
    thousands and thousands
    of cells are dying.
  • 4:39 - 4:45
When you scratch yourself like this,
    many dry cells fall down.
  • 4:46 - 4:47
    They have died.
  • 4:51 - 4:55
    And many cells die
every moment of our daily life.
  • 4:59 - 5:03
And because you are so busy,
you do not notice that you are dying.
  • 5:04 - 5:06
If they die, you are dying!
  • 5:07 - 5:09
You think that you are not dying yet,
  • 5:10 - 5:14
    that you have to wait
50 or 70 years in order to die.
  • 5:14 - 5:16
    That is not true!
  • 5:17 - 5:21
Death is not down the road,
death is right here and right now.
  • 5:23 - 5:28
So 'la mort', death, is happening
right in the here and now, at each moment.
  • 5:30 - 5:33
    And because of the death
    of a number of cells,
  • 5:33 - 5:37
the birth of other cells is possible.
  • 5:38 - 5:41
So many cells are being born
    in the present moment.
  • 5:43 - 5:47
And we do not have the time
to organize a happy birthday for them.
  • 5:52 - 5:57
    So the fact is that,
    scientifically speaking,
  • 6:00 - 6:04
you can already see birth and death
    happening in the present moment.
  • 6:06 - 6:12
And because of the dying of cells,
the birth of cells is possible.
  • 6:13 - 6:19
Because the birth of cells is possible,
the dying of cells is possible.
  • 6:20 - 6:22
They lean on each other to be.
  • 6:24 - 6:28
    So you are experiencing
    dying and being born
  • 6:29 - 6:30
    in every moment.
  • 6:31 - 6:34
Do not think you were only born
    on that moment.
  • 6:34 - 6:37
    That moment written
    on your birth certificate
  • 6:37 - 6:39
    is just one moment.
  • 6:40 - 6:42
And that is not the first moment.
  • 6:43 - 6:47
Before that moment, there were moments
    you were already there.
  • 6:49 - 6:52
    Before you were conceived
in the womb of your mother,
  • 6:53 - 6:56
    you had already been there
in your father and your mother
  • 6:56 - 6:58
    in another form.
  • 7:00 - 7:05
So there is no birth, no real beginning
    and there is no ending.
  • 7:09 - 7:14
    So when we know that
birth and death are always together,
  • 7:15 - 7:17
we are no longer afraid of dying,
  • 7:18 - 7:20
because at the moment of dying,
    there is birth also.
  • 7:22 - 7:24
    (French) Birth comes with death.
  • 7:25 - 7:27
    They cannot be separated.
  • 7:27 - 7:30
This is a very deep meditation.
  • 7:32 - 7:35
    And you should not meditate
with your brain alone on this.
  • 7:36 - 7:38
    You have to observe life...
  • 7:41 - 7:43
    during your daily life.
  • 7:46 - 7:50
And you see birth and death
    inter-are in everything:
  • 7:53 - 8:01
    trees, animals, the weather,
    matter, energy...
  • 8:03 - 8:05
    And scientists have already said,
  • 8:06 - 8:08
there is no birth and no death.
  • 8:09 - 8:12
    (French)
Nothing is created, nothing is lost.
  • 8:12 - 8:14
    There is only transformation.
  • 8:14 - 8:18
So transformation is possible, is real.
  • 8:18 - 8:21
And birth and death are not real.
  • 8:22 - 8:25
What you call birth and death
    are only transformation.
  • 8:28 - 8:31
When you form a chemical reaction,
  • 8:33 - 8:37
you bring a number of substances together.
  • 8:39 - 8:43
And when the substances meet each other
    there is a transformation.
  • 8:44 - 8:48
    And sometimes you think
a substance is no longer there,
  • 8:49 - 8:50
    it has vanished.
  • 8:51 - 8:55
    But in fact, looking deeply,
you see the substance is still there
  • 8:55 - 8:57
    under another form.
  • 8:58 - 9:03
When you look at the blue sky
you do not see your cloud anymore.
  • 9:03 - 9:05
You think your cloud has died,
  • 9:05 - 9:12
but in fact your cloud continues always
in the form of the rain and so on.
  • 9:15 - 9:18
So birth and death are seen
    only on the surface.
  • 9:19 - 9:23
If you go down, deep down,
there is no birth and no death.
  • 9:23 - 9:25
    There is only continuation.
  • 9:30 - 9:34
And when you touch the continuation,
the nature of no birth and no death,
  • 9:35 - 9:37
you are no longer afraid of dying.
  • 9:41 - 9:45
    And not only the Buddhists
speak of no birth and no death,
  • 9:46 - 9:49
    but science also speaks
of no birth and no death.
  • 9:50 - 9:54
    They can exchange their findings.
    It is very interesting.
  • 9:55 - 9:59
This is an invitation for us
to live our lives more deeply.
  • 10:00 - 10:05
    So that we can touch
our true nature of no birth and no death.
  • 10:12 - 10:15
    And, I know, Thây's answer...
  • 10:17 - 10:22
is only an invitation to practice.
  • 10:24 - 10:28
We have to live our lives
    more mindfully, with concentration
  • 10:28 - 10:32
so that we can be deeply in touch
    with what is happening.
  • 10:33 - 10:37
Then we have a chance to touch
    the true nature of reality:
  • 10:38 - 10:39
    no birth and no death.
  • 10:42 - 10:48
And that is described in Buddhism
    with the term 'Nirvana'.
  • 10:49 - 10:51
'Nirvana' is no birth and no death.
  • 10:52 - 10:55
And in Christianity you may call it:
  • 10:57 - 10:59
    'The Ultimate', 'God'.
  • 11:00 - 11:03
    God is our true nature
of no birth and no death.
  • 11:05 - 11:07
And we do not have to go and find God.
  • 11:09 - 11:10
    God is our true nature.
  • 11:11 - 11:13
    It is like a wave.
  • 11:15 - 11:18
A wave believes that she is
    subjected to birth and death.
  • 11:21 - 11:26
And every time she comes up
    and begins to go down,
  • 11:27 - 11:28
    she is afraid of dying.
  • 11:32 - 11:35
A wave is afraid of dying.
  • 11:36 - 11:39
    But if the wave realizes
    that she is water,
  • 11:41 - 11:42
    she is no longer afraid.
  • 11:44 - 11:48
Before going up, she is water.
    Going down, she is water.
  • 11:49 - 11:52
    And after going down,
    she continues to be water.
  • 11:54 - 11:55
    There is no death.
  • 11:58 - 12:03
So it is very important that
    the wave does some meditation,
  • 12:06 - 12:11
and realizes that she is wave,
but at the same time she is water.
  • 12:12 - 12:17
And when she knows she is water,
she is no longer afraid of dying.
  • 12:18 - 12:22
    She feels wonderful going up,
    she feels wonderful going down.
  • 12:23 - 12:24
    She is free from fear.
  • 12:26 - 12:30
And our cloud is also like that,
they are not afraid of dying.
  • 12:30 - 12:34
They know that, if they are not a cloud,
    they can be something else,
  • 12:34 - 12:37
    equally beautiful, like
    the rain or the snow.
  • 12:49 - 12:52
    So the wave does not
    go and look for water.
  • 12:54 - 12:59
She does not have to go
    and search for water,
  • 12:59 - 13:02
because she is water in the here and now.
  • 13:02 - 13:04
The same thing is true with God.
  • 13:04 - 13:06
    We do not have to...
  • 13:08 - 13:09
    look for God.
  • 13:10 - 13:12
    We are God,
    God is our true nature.
  • 13:15 - 13:17
You do not have to go
    and look for Nirvana.
  • 13:17 - 13:19
    Nirvana is our ground.
  • 13:21 - 13:23
That is the teaching of the Buddha.
  • 13:24 - 13:27
    And a number of us
have been able to realize that.
  • 13:28 - 13:31
    We enjoy the present moment.
  • 13:31 - 13:34
    We know that it is
    impossible for us to die.
  • 13:47 - 13:52
