#DEAFTALENT: Buffer Festival 2015 Recap

  • 0:00 - 0:01
    Alright, bye. [DOOR CLOSES]
  • 0:01 - 0:02
    [INTRO]
  • 0:04 - 0:04
    Hello.
  • 0:04 - 0:10
So, Buffer Festival is officially over which
    is kind of sad.
  • 0:10 - 0:12
It was my first Buffer Festival.
  • 0:12 - 0:15
And I kind of invited myself.
  • 0:15 - 0:18
Or I tried to invite myself and then I got
    the invite.
  • 0:18 - 0:25
My friends Laur, from LaurDIY, and, well my
boyfriend, Devon, told me that I should e-mail
  • 0:25 - 0:31
them and see if I could possibly become a
featured creator at Buffer and at first -
  • 0:31 - 0:32
At first, I didn’t want to.
  • 0:32 - 0:33
I was too nervous about it.
  • 0:33 - 0:38
I was like, “No, they’re not gonna want
me to come over ‘cos I’m practically nobody
  • 0:38 - 0:39
    on YouTube, but, uhm…
  • 0:39 - 0:42
Yeah, they wanted me out there because -
  • 0:42 - 0:46
I’m one of the more “unique” and “interesting”
    YouTubers, if you will.
  • 0:46 - 0:49
So, I did end up on two screenings: one of
    them being the -
  • 0:49 - 0:54
One of them being the Science and Education
and the other being Women of YouTube.
  • 0:54 - 1:01
On Science and Education, I was with Matthew
Santoro, Jake from Vsauce3, Hannah Witton.
  • 1:01 - 1:04
Sabrina Cruz, who is already a friend of mine.
  • 1:04 - 1:06
A couple other people who I wasn’t very
    familiar with.
  • 1:06 - 1:11
And then on Women of YouTube, I was with Hannah
    again, my friend, Meghan Tonjes.
  • 1:11 - 1:17
Uhm, Estee was on there and a couple other
people that I wasn’t familiar with.
  • 1:17 - 1:21
I think that’s what makes me so nervous
about being on events like these, like with
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    VidCon or Buffer Festival.
  • 1:23 - 1:29
I don’t watch YouTube much anymore and if
I do, it’s always a select number of people,
  • 1:29 - 1:32
probably people that wouldn’t make it to
    these things.
  • 1:32 - 1:38
So before we get into the actual screenings,
we can backtrack a little bit and talk about
  • 1:38 - 1:41
the events that happened before the actual
    screenings.
  • 1:41 - 1:45
I did get to stay at a hotel and it was a
    pretty nifty hotel.
  • 1:45 - 1:51
There were hospitality suites and you could
get free snacks and pizza and stuff.
  • 1:51 - 1:53
We actually did eat out a lot.
  • 1:53 - 1:57
When you have so many YouTubers in one tiny
room, sometimes, it’s just better to eat
  • 1:57 - 2:04
out than to try to fight people for food because
the “real food” came when everyone would
  • 2:04 - 2:07
go up there and then they would stay there
and it was just so crowded.
  • 2:07 - 2:15
So the first day of the event was the Gala,
the Red Carpet, and we did dress up pretty nifty.
  • 2:15 - 2:20
I actually got to borrow my dress from Laur
so, thank you, Laur, for lending me the dress.
  • 2:20 - 2:25
Food was good and we had to wait for our limo
    to come pick us up.
  • 2:25 - 2:28
And that was one of the things that kind of
    -
  • 2:28 - 2:29
That actually bummed me out -
  • 2:29 - 2:37
Was I was the last featured creator, I believe,
to actually get a limo, so by the time that
  • 2:37 - 2:40
we went to the Red Carpet, pretty much nobody
    was there.
  • 2:40 - 2:42
Like, all the interview people and everything.
  • 2:42 - 2:45
Nobody was really there so it just wasn’t
    as fun.
  • 2:45 - 2:51
The Red Carpet was something that I was really
looking forward to and that just was a bummer, but oh well.
  • 2:51 - 2:55
If there’s one thing that I’ve learned
about this stuff, is that next time, if there
  • 2:55 - 2:55
    is a Buffer,
  • 2:55 - 2:57
I am wearing a pantsuit because it’s warmer.
  • 2:57 - 3:01
October is just way too cold of a month to
do red carpet events. I - no.
  • 3:01 - 3:03
And then moving on to the actual screenings
    -
  • 3:03 - 3:06
Like I said, I was on two screenings.
  • 3:06 - 3:08
And there were actually meet ups.
  • 3:08 - 3:10
For them, but I did not go to any of them.
  • 3:10 - 3:15
One, because I did not think it was really
necessary for me to go because I didn’t
  • 3:15 - 3:17
think there would be anybody there.
  • 3:17 - 3:22
I only knew one person for sure was going
and we ended up meeting somewhere else.
  • 3:22 - 3:26
But, actually, what was kind of funny about
    it was that - I - I don’t know why this
  • 3:26 - 3:32
happened, but Buffer staff - I believe it
was Buffer staff - called my hotel room with
  • 3:33 - 3:34
    a voice phone.
  • 3:34 - 3:37
I’m not the one you call using a voice phone
    to.
  • 3:37 - 3:41
But, yeah, they called and they told me that
the meetups were actually mandatory, but then
  • 3:41 - 3:42
    we were like -
  • 3:42 - 3:47
But then they said that because the meetups
were not captioned - they did not have a captioner
  • 3:47 - 3:51
for me - I was the exception and I didn’t
    have to go.
  • 3:51 - 3:57
Buffer did provide me with a live captioner
so I had a computer in front of me or an iPad
  • 3:57 - 3:58
    in front of me.
  • 3:58 - 4:04
I had different live captioners on both days
so the way that we went about it was a little
  • 4:04 - 4:05
    bit different.
  • 4:05 - 4:10
For Science and Education, it was a little
bit more private for us and everybody went
  • 4:10 - 4:12
up on stage one at a time and then we all
    went together.
  • 4:13 - 4:18
And so we were in the back during the actual
video previews so I was, you know, reading
  • 4:18 - 4:20
all the captions, like, in my own little corner.
  • 4:20 - 4:25
Whereas with Women of YouTube, we were all
on stage together sitting down so I had the
  • 4:25 - 4:30
computer to my left and while everyone’s
kind of looking this way or this way, I’m
  • 4:30 - 4:36
that person mostly looking this way as I’ll
show you a picture over here where you’ll
  • 4:36 - 4:37
    be able to see that.
  • 4:37 - 4:42
I was very, very nervous about the screenings
because one, I’ve never done this before.
  • 4:42 - 4:44
    Two, I wasn’t by myself.
  • 4:44 - 4:48
And you would think that if you had other
people with you, it would take the nerves
  • 4:48 - 4:54
away a little bit, which it kind of does,
but if you’re like me and you can’t understand
  • 4:54 - 4:59
the majority of the people there, it’s kind
of like you have to constantly ask questions
  • 4:59 - 5:04
over and over and make sure you have all the
information so you don’t screw up.
  • 5:04 - 5:06
Because if something happens, it’s probably
    -
  • 5:06 - 5:07
    Gonna be because of me.
  • 5:07 - 5:10
And I don’t want that, but it all went really
    well.
  • 5:10 - 5:14
I think most people premiered the same video
    if they had multiple screenings.
  • 5:14 - 5:19
I, however, did a different video for both
    screenings.
  • 5:19 - 5:25
For Science and Education, I did another closed
    captioning video, basically.
  • 5:25 - 5:32
I just did a brand new one and I made it shorter,
more to the point for the people on the screening
  • 5:32 - 5:34
with me and for the people in the audience.
  • 5:34 - 5:39
It’s pretty much the same thing as the other
    you-need-to-closed-caption-this-is-how-you-do-it
  • 5:39 - 5:46
videos on my channel, so I’m not going to
put that video on my channel like other people
  • 5:46 - 5:47
    will with their videos.
  • 5:47 - 5:49
Like, it’s just the same thing.
  • 5:49 - 5:51
But what was really awesome is -
  • 5:51 - 5:58
When we all had our Q&A, the very first thing
that was mentioned was from Jake from Vsauce3
  • 5:58 - 6:04
and he talked about how he already captioned
all his videos and I knew that because when
  • 6:04 - 6:11
VidCon was coming, I had tweeted him thanking
him to - or for - captioning his channel and
  • 6:11 - 6:15
he talked about how important it was and that
    made me feel really good.
  • 6:15 - 6:21
Like, the first thing that gets talked about
is a subject that a very small YouTuber brings
  • 6:21 - 6:22
    up.
  • 6:22 - 6:25
A YouTuber that nobody really knows.
  • 6:25 - 6:30
So that made me pretty happy and I think I
might’ve cried on stage just a little bit.
  • 6:30 - 6:37
And then Matthew Santoro who was also on the
screening also mentioned how he was looking
  • 6:37 - 6:40
into it and that he was going to start doing
    it.
  • 6:40 - 6:43
And what was really awesome is, today, he
    left me a -
  • 6:43 - 6:52
Post on my Facebook telling me that he had
already got in 225 caption files from Rev
  • 6:52 - 6:59
and put ‘em all on his videos so his entire
channel is captioned now which is totally
  • 6:59 - 7:04
freakin’ awesome because I think the only
person to do something like that with that
  • 7:04 - 7:07
many videos was Tyler Oakley back in January.
  • 7:07 - 7:14
So, thank you, Matthew, for captioning your
entire channel so quickly and inviting me
  • 7:14 - 7:16
    to that party on Saturday.
  • 7:16 - 7:18
That was pretty awesome. Thank you.
  • 7:18 - 7:25
So not only did Jake talk about it and then
Matt started captioning, uhm, Leah Rifkin,
  • 7:25 - 7:31
I believe is her name, she was on the screening
as well and Out of Frame TV, I believe is
  • 7:31 - 7:33
what it’s called, is being captioned.
  • 7:33 - 7:40
And then we move on to the Women of YouTube
    screening which was just… wow.
  • 7:40 - 7:42
There were so many people on Women of YouTube.
  • 7:42 - 7:49
And I did a more general video, like, being
a deaf woman on YouTube, blah blah blah.
  • 7:49 - 7:53
More misogyny, more - different kinds of misogyny.
  • 7:53 - 7:57
And, uhm, that’s not going to be premiered
    on here either.
  • 7:57 - 8:02
I don’t have the file, but I might redo
it because both videos were kind of last minute
  • 8:02 - 8:06
and I would rather redo it and make it better
    to put on my channel.
  • 8:06 - 8:09
But that went really well, uhm…
  • 8:09 - 8:10
    Leigh…
  • 8:10 - 8:12
    I’ll put her name here.
  • 8:12 - 8:16
She, uh, premiered a video there and it’s
captioned on her channel now so I will link
  • 8:16 - 8:18
that down below because it was pretty awesome.
  • 8:18 - 8:24
And Estee is looking into it as well so I
have to e-mail her at some point so we can
  • 8:24 - 8:25
    get that going.
  • 8:25 - 8:30
I’m not sure what the rest of the YouTubers
    are going to do, unfortunately.
  • 8:30 - 8:34
But, hopefully, they will get on the captioning train as well.
  • 8:34 - 8:35
    That would be pretty awesome.
  • 8:35 - 8:38
And Estee and I got a selfie together which
    was pretty awesome.
  • 8:38 - 8:41
Well, the good thing with Estee was we both
    relate.
  • 8:41 - 8:46
We wanted to step out of the beauty world
because we kind of felt trapped in that little
  • 8:46 - 8:48
    beauty bubble because -
  • 8:48 - 8:50
    It - It - It’s a thing.
  • 8:50 - 8:53
A lot of, you know, women on YouTube, when
they’re just starting on YouTube, they don’t
  • 8:53 - 8:53
    -
  • 8:54 - 8:59
They think that you should probably just stick
to being a makeup person on YouTube because
  • 8:59 - 9:01
they tend to be more successful.
  • 9:01 - 9:06
And not only that, if you stick to the beauty
bubble thing, you kind of hide away from -
  • 9:06 - 9:10
The comments that you would get if you were
more of an outspoken kind of person.
  • 9:10 - 9:13
If you talked about social issues, feminism
    or whatever.
  • 9:13 - 9:18
It was - It was pretty awesome to see that
another person on the panel felt the same
  • 9:18 - 9:24
way as me and wanted to, uhm, you know, move
out of that and work on to something else
  • 9:24 - 9:28
regardless of the fact that other people have
kind of made comments about how you shouldn’t
  • 9:28 - 9:30
do this or do this, do that, so -
  • 9:30 - 9:32
    Or should do that. Yeah.
  • 9:32 - 9:35
Other than that, Buffer was pretty fun.
  • 9:35 - 9:42
The parties were so-so, but parties, you know,
me, we don’t really mesh very well.
  • 9:42 - 9:49
I met a lot of awesome people that became
friends, became acquaintances and, you know,
  • 9:49 - 9:52
people that asked me about captioning outside
    of panels and -
  • 9:52 - 9:54
I would definitely want to do this again.
  • 9:54 - 10:01
So, thank you, Corey and Sam and everybody
else from Buffer Festival for doing this thing
  • 10:01 - 10:04
and, you know, for inviting me to come over
    and -
  • 10:04 - 10:09
And fingers crossed that we will have another
Buffer Festival next year because it was really fun.
  • 10:09 - 10:10
    It was really awesome.
  • 10:10 - 10:15
It’s a great way to find out about people
and I would definitely want to go.
  • 10:15 - 10:17
I will see you later. Bye.
