Omer Fast: "CNN Concatenated" | ART21 "Exclusive"

  • 0:01 - 0:03
    [MALE ANNOUNCER] This is CNN.
  • 0:03 - 0:05
    [Omer Fast: "CNN Concatenated"]
  • 0:06 - 0:07
    [WOMAN TAKES A BREATH]
  • 0:07 - 0:10
    I / just / feel / like / I / have / so / much
    / to / give / but
  • 0:10 - 0:14
    sometimes / you / can / be / so / full / of
    / resentment.
  • 0:14 - 0:15
    [MAN TAKES A BREATH]
  • 0:15 - 0:16
    Why / is / that?
  • 0:16 - 0:17
    [MAN TAKES A BREATH]
  • 0:17 - 0:19
    Perhaps / I / talk / too / much.
  • 0:19 - 0:20
    [WOMAN TAKES A BREATH]
  • 0:20 - 0:23
    Maybe / I / come / on / a / little / too / strong.
  • 0:23 - 0:24
    [WOMAN TAKES A BREATH]
  • 0:24 - 0:26
    Sometimes / even / I / over / react.
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    [WOMAN TAKES A BREATH]
  • 0:28 - 0:28
    Okay.
  • 0:28 - 0:29
    [WOMAN TAKES A BREATH]
  • 0:29 - 0:34
[OMER FAST] So "CNN Concatenated" is an 18-minute-long monologue, in a sense,
  • 0:34 - 0:39
that's composed from thousands of very small clips
  • 0:39 - 0:41
recorded on the Cable News Network.
  • 0:42 - 0:42
    [WOMAN TAKES A BREATH]
  • 0:42 - 0:45
    If / we're / going / to be / in / this / relationship
  • 0:45 - 0:46
    for / some / time,
  • 0:46 - 0:50
    we / may / as / well / begin / working / on
    / this / together / now.
  • 0:50 - 0:51
    [WOMAN TAKES A BREATH]
  • 0:51 - 0:55
    It's / not / enough / to / turn / me / on
    / once / in / a / while.
  • 0:55 - 0:56
    [WOMAN TAKES A BREATH]
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    It's / not / enough / for / you / to / turn
    / to / me
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    every / time / you / need / something.
  • 1:01 - 1:02
    [MAN TAKES A BREATH]
  • 1:02 - 1:06
[FAST] I started the piece earlier than 2001
  • 1:06 - 1:09
and began collecting material not really knowing
  • 1:09 - 1:10
what I was going to do with it,
  • 1:12 - 1:15
and began to form very primitive sentences
  • 1:15 - 1:17
with these little words that I was collecting.
  • 1:17 - 1:20
    ...statistics / and / their / partisan / priorities,
  • 1:20 - 1:22
    between / the / Middle / East / and / the
    / Far / West,
  • 1:22 - 1:25
    between / the / Mid / West / and / the / Far
    / East,
  • 1:25 - 1:28
    between / the / coasts / and / the / swing
    / states,
  • 1:28 - 1:30
    between / the / standards / of / reporting
    / and / the
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    measures / of / the / demographic / tastes
  • 1:32 - 1:35
    between / the / spy / plane / and / the / space
    / station,
  • 1:35 - 1:39
    civilians / on / submarines / and / billionaires
    / in / orbiting / vacations...
  • 1:39 - 1:43
[FAST] And then I moved to Germany on September 1st, 2001,
  • 1:43 - 1:47
and, while sitting in German classes learning a language--
  • 1:47 - 1:50
and writing downs words and reciting them--
  • 1:50 - 1:57
I heard about the attacks on the World Trade Center,
  • 1:57 - 1:59
and realized that the piece, in a sense,
  • 1:59 - 2:00
    would have to change.
  • 2:00 - 2:05
I kept ordering VHS cassettes from CNN
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    of the aftermath.
  • 2:07 - 2:09
    And through that footage,
  • 2:09 - 2:13
the challenge was to articulate a voice--
  • 2:13 - 2:15
to try to locate a voice-
  • 2:15 - 2:17
that sort of responds to all that,
  • 2:17 - 2:20
or rather speaks through it at the same time.
  • 2:21 - 2:22
    [MAN TAKES A BREATH]
  • 2:22 - 2:24
    Where / do / our / respons- / -ibilities / begin?
  • 2:25 - 2:26
    [MAN TAKES A BREATH]
  • 2:26 - 2:27
    Where / do / our / needs / end?
  • 2:28 - 2:29
    [WOMAN TAKES A BREATH]
  • 2:29 - 2:31
    What / have / we / done / to / deserve / this?
  • 2:31 - 2:32
    [MAN TAKES SILENT PAUSE]
  • 2:32 - 2:35
    What / could / we / have / done / to / prevent
    / it / from / happening?
  • 2:35 - 2:37
    [WOMAN TAKES A BREATH]
  • 2:37 - 2:38
    What / can / we / learn?
  • 2:38 - 2:39
    [WOMAN TAKES A BREATH]
  • 2:39 - 2:40
    Where / do / we / go / from / here?
  • 2:40 - 2:41
    [WOMAN TAKES A BREATH]
  • 2:41 - 2:42
    What / do / we / know?
  • 2:42 - 2:43
    [MAN TAKES A BREATH]
  • 2:43 - 2:44
    How / have / we / changed?
  • 2:44 - 2:46
    [MAN TAKES A BREATH]
  • 2:46 - 2:47
    What / should / we / have / done / different
    / -ly?
  • 2:47 - 2:48
    [WOMAN TAKES A BREATH]
  • 2:48 - 2:49
    Who / can / we / trust?
  • 2:49 - 2:51
[FAST] But if the work succeeds,
  • 2:51 - 2:52
it's when you pass that point--
  • 2:52 - 2:55
you begin to almost close your eyes,
  • 2:55 - 2:56
    with all the clutter
  • 2:56 - 2:58
and with all the noise that it makes
  • 2:58 - 3:01
and begin to listen to that voice
  • 3:01 - 3:03
    that's speaking through the footage.
  • 3:05 - 3:08
That voice, it's a pretty scared voice.
  • 3:08 - 3:10
    It's pretty urgent,
  • 3:10 - 3:14
    demanding, aggressive, scared voice.
  • 3:14 - 3:16
    I / don't / know / what / to / say.
  • 3:16 - 3:18
    [WOMAN TAKES SILENT PAUSE]
  • 3:18 - 3:23
[FAST] That voice is, I suppose, in a way,
  • 3:23 - 3:24
    that kind of...
  • 3:24 - 3:26
those sort of agents or their doppelganger
  • 3:26 - 3:27
    that are used for me.
  • 3:28 - 3:29
    [WOMAN TAKES A BREATH]
  • 3:29 - 3:31
    Every / time / I / try / to / speak / carefully,
  • 3:31 - 3:34
    I / fuck / up / and / make / a / big / mess
    / of / it / all.
  • 3:34 - 3:37
    [WOMAN TAKES SILENT PAUSE]
