The song, "Mary Don't You Weep" is an old 'spiritual' or gospel song. The lyrics vary as each artist adds their own touch when they record the song. The story is based upon the story of Lazarus, from the Bible. Mary and Martha are the sisters of Lazarus. The song is about death and grief. Prince improvised some lyrics when he recorded this song by himself, on a cassette, in 1983. His voice ranges from falsetto at the beginning to baritone as his emotion rises. He can be heard sniffling (tears?) toward the end of the song.

The improvied line "Martha, you cook the greatest omelets in the world" probably is meant to refer to the Biblical descriptions of Martha, who was the one who took care of the family guests by cooking for them. Prince has obviously moved the time line of the main story to a more modern setting.
