Advice on Avoiding Pastoral Burnout - Kevin Williams

  • 0:00 - 0:03
    Have you ever struggled with
being burned out as a pastor?
  • 0:03 - 0:05
If so, why? And what helped you
  • 0:05 - 0:07
to get out of that season?
  • 0:07 - 0:10
    Kevin: Yeah, I've certainly
    been burned out
  • 0:10 - 0:13
as a pastor in the past.
  • 0:13 - 0:14
    And the cause of it
  • 0:14 - 0:16
and the remedy if you like
  • 0:16 - 0:20
    was not trying to be someone else;
  • 0:20 - 0:23
    realizing my limitations.
  • 0:23 - 0:24
It's very easy because early on,
  • 0:24 - 0:29
    I'd read about other Christians,
  • 0:29 - 0:31
    and especially listen to sermons
  • 0:31 - 0:33
saying you must do this as a pastor.
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    So I'd be up at 4 a.m. or 5 a.m.
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    reading and praying.
  • 0:37 - 0:39
And I'd be a total zombie.
  • 0:39 - 0:41
    I just can't do that.
  • 0:41 - 0:42
    Now, other people can.
  • 0:42 - 0:43
    If someone can, that's great.
  • 0:43 - 0:45
I'm not saying to someone else
  • 0:45 - 0:47
don't to that if it works for them.
  • 0:47 - 0:51
    But for me, my mind
    doesn't work at that time.
  • 0:51 - 0:55
    I find it better to be later in the day;
  • 0:55 - 0:56
well, not later in the day,
  • 0:56 - 0:58
but when I'm up and around, if you like,
  • 0:58 - 0:59
    and ready.
  • 0:59 - 1:02
    I mean I read Scripture a
    lot and think about it.
  • 1:02 - 1:07
But yeah, it would just wipe me out.
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    And I'd read also,
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    you have people like Spurgeon.
  • 1:11 - 1:14
I once heard he could preach 12 sermons
  • 1:14 - 1:16
a week or something like that.
  • 1:16 - 1:19
    Again, it's realizing, I can't do that.
  • 1:19 - 1:23
    At the moment, I'm doing
    two fresh sermons a week.
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    A Wednesday service we have
  • 1:25 - 1:26
    and a Sunday.
  • 1:26 - 1:30
    I can preach more when
    I'm repeating things
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    I've taught in the past.
  • 1:32 - 1:33
    That's easy enough.
  • 1:33 - 1:36
But as far as coming up with fresh sermons
  • 1:36 - 1:37
    and properly studying,
  • 1:37 - 1:39
    it used to be three.
  • 1:39 - 1:41
But there's always a compromise there.
  • 1:41 - 1:43
I used to go and do street evangelism
  • 1:43 - 1:45
    on a Saturday before finishing
  • 1:45 - 1:48
    preparing Saturday evening
  • 1:48 - 1:52
    for the next morning.
  • 1:52 - 1:55
I would be mentally wiped out
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    after the street evangelism.
  • 1:57 - 1:59
    So there's a compromise there.
  • 1:59 - 2:02
    It's not wearing Saul's armor;
  • 2:02 - 2:05
realizing what you can and can't do.
  • 2:05 - 2:09
People demanding your time all the time.
  • 2:09 - 2:13
    Of course, you want to
    be helping and so forth.
  • 2:13 - 2:18
    But it's prioritizing things.
  • 2:18 - 2:22
    Learning to say no sometimes.
  • 2:22 - 2:26
    Because otherwise you can
    just get wiped out there.
  • 2:26 - 2:28
And you've got to learn as well
  • 2:28 - 2:32
the things you can't change or deal with,
  • 2:32 - 2:34
to just trust the Lord with them.
  • 2:34 - 2:36
    Pray for those problems
    and things like that;
  • 2:36 - 2:41
    things from the outside.
  • 2:41 - 2:43
When I go to sleep at night,
  • 2:43 - 2:47
the world still revolves perfectly well.
  • 2:47 - 2:51
So, God can handle that on His own.
  • 2:51 - 2:55
So, yeah, and you know even things
  • 2:55 - 2:57
    that have helped me:
  • 2:57 - 2:59
    making sure I'm eating right.
  • 2:59 - 3:04
    Not being obsessed with health,
  • 3:04 - 3:09
but someone can just eat really bad
  • 3:09 - 3:13
and it can affect how tired they are.
  • 3:13 - 3:17
Getting some exercise really helped me.
  • 3:17 - 3:20
It might only be 20 minutes one day
  • 3:20 - 3:22
or 30 minutes or sometimes I might
  • 3:22 - 3:24
get a good bike ride of a couple hours,
  • 3:24 - 3:31
but that's kind of rare (the latter).
  • 3:31 - 3:34
Making sure I get enough sleep.
  • 3:34 - 3:37
    Again, I would starve myself
    of sleep at one point.
  • 3:37 - 3:40
There are people who can do that,
  • 3:40 - 3:41
    but I can't.
  • 3:41 - 3:44
    I need an 8 hours.
  • 3:44 - 3:47
Saturday morning to Sunday it might be
  • 3:47 - 3:49
    4 hours or 6 hours,
  • 3:49 - 3:52
    but I have to have a catch-up.
  • 3:52 - 3:54
Because I used to think it was more holy
  • 3:54 - 3:55
    the less sleep you had,
  • 3:55 - 3:57
    and things like that.
  • 3:57 - 3:58
    Which was a big mistake,
  • 3:58 - 4:01
but I remember listening to John Piper,
  • 4:01 - 4:04
who once said a woman was saying,
  • 4:04 - 4:08
    I've cut down my sleep
  • 4:08 - 4:10
    and I'm always tired.
  • 4:10 - 4:12
    I'm just always exhausted.
  • 4:12 - 4:14
What's God trying to tell me though this?
  • 4:14 - 4:17
And John Piper said, "Go to bed."
  • 4:17 - 4:20
You know, it can be obvious sometimes.
  • 4:20 - 4:23
    Again, we've got to realize
  • 4:23 - 4:27
    we're not someone else.
  • 4:27 - 4:30
But of course, the other things
  • 4:30 - 4:33
that are essential is to always be
  • 4:33 - 4:36
    in the Word and prayer,
  • 4:36 - 4:38
which is very difficult not to be
  • 4:38 - 4:40
    if you're a pastor anyway.
  • 4:40 - 4:45
But the other thing I would have -
  • 4:45 - 4:47
a mistake if you like -
  • 4:47 - 4:51
one time, I would be preparing the sermons
  • 4:51 - 4:53
    going through various books,
  • 4:53 - 4:58
    and also I'd be doing
    personal reading as well
  • 4:58 - 5:02
    which again, everyone's different.
  • 5:02 - 5:05
But I was told never just read
  • 5:05 - 5:07
    what's in your sermons,
  • 5:07 - 5:09
as in your preparation for your reading,
  • 5:09 - 5:13
    because - I can't remember
    how it was phrased,
  • 5:13 - 5:17
but after awhile I began to see
  • 5:17 - 5:19
    it's not right because -
  • 5:19 - 5:22
    the point is, you need to be feeding;
  • 5:22 - 5:24
you need to be fed yourself.
  • 5:24 - 5:27
But then I realized that's not right,
  • 5:27 - 5:30
because the idea was, for instance,
  • 5:30 - 5:32
at the moment we're going through
  • 5:32 - 5:33
    Matthew's Gospel
  • 5:33 - 5:35
    and we're going through Exodus.
  • 5:35 - 5:37
Okay, so, the idea of that statement
  • 5:37 - 5:39
is don't just use my preparation
  • 5:39 - 5:41
    in Exodus and Matthew,
  • 5:41 - 5:43
    because I need feeding myself.
  • 5:43 - 5:46
But the problem with that statement is
  • 5:46 - 5:47
    I should be feeding myself
  • 5:47 - 5:50
    through Matthew and Exodus.
  • 5:50 - 5:52
Otherwise, I shouldn't be teaching it
  • 5:52 - 5:54
    to anyone else.
  • 5:54 - 5:56
Often, this is what it is.
  • 5:56 - 5:59
As I'm preparing, and of course,
  • 5:59 - 6:00
    I'm doing this all week,
  • 6:00 - 6:02
    I'm thinking about the Scriptures
  • 6:02 - 6:04
and I'm thinking this is so helpful.
  • 6:04 - 6:05
    I can't wait to share
  • 6:05 - 6:06
    with the brethren.
  • 6:06 - 6:08
    I can't wait because I know
  • 6:08 - 6:10
it's going to help them the same.
  • 6:10 - 6:11
    That's how it should be.
  • 6:11 - 6:13
    But my point here is
  • 6:13 - 6:16
I was picking up other stuff as well,
  • 6:16 - 6:20
and I can only take so much.
  • 6:20 - 6:23
    And that's the way,
    I think I heard MacArthur -
  • 6:23 - 6:25
that's the way he reads the Bible,
  • 6:25 - 6:28
mastering one book at a time.
  • 6:28 - 6:30
    Well, I'm trying to do
it with two at a time,
  • 6:30 - 6:34
but that's the way that works for me
  • 6:34 - 6:38
    at the moment.
  • 6:38 - 6:40
    So the big thing was
  • 6:40 - 6:42
    we should imitate other men,
  • 6:42 - 6:45
but you got too much in bondage to that?
  • 6:45 - 6:46
And that was what was burning you out,
  • 6:46 - 6:48
    wearing Saul's armor;
  • 6:48 - 6:50
    having expectations that
    just weren't really
  • 6:50 - 6:53
the Lord's will for you personally?
  • 6:53 - 6:55
Kevin: Yeah, as I said, the things
  • 6:55 - 6:56
    that didn't work for me,
  • 6:56 - 6:58
I don't want anyone to listen to this
  • 6:58 - 7:00
and think well, I shouldn't do that then.
  • 7:00 - 7:01
    It may work for them.
  • 7:01 - 7:03
And if it works for them - great.
  • 7:03 - 7:05
    It's a bit like sometimes
  • 7:05 - 7:08
    a Christian mother, for instance.
  • 7:08 - 7:13
    She'll hear about getting
    up at 6 a.m. or 7 a.m.
  • 7:13 - 7:15
to pray and read the Bible.
  • 7:15 - 7:18
    And she's trying to do
    it with a little toddler
  • 7:18 - 7:19
who is screaming or getting ready,
  • 7:19 - 7:21
and sometimes it can be better to
  • 7:21 - 7:23
just get the children ready to whatever,
  • 7:23 - 7:26
and then sit down with a cup of coffee.
  • 7:26 - 7:29
    And have your devotion then.
  • 7:29 - 7:31
Rather than a time when it's impossible.
  • 7:31 - 7:33
    Everybody's different.
  • 7:33 - 7:37
There should be a time though.
  • 7:37 - 7:39
But as a pastor, as I said,
  • 7:39 - 7:42
as far as reading the Word,
  • 7:42 - 7:44
    it's harder not to do
  • 7:44 - 7:49
    because you've just got so
    much preparation anyway.
