Meet the Translators: Shadia

This is the story of Shadia Ramsahye, a Mauritian-born digital media student in Paris, France who translates TED Talks from English into Urdu.

The TED Open Translation Project brings TEDTalks beyond the English-speaking world by offering subtitles, interactive transcripts and the ability for any talk to be translated by volunteers worldwide and is one of the most comprehensive attempts by a major media platform to subtitle and index online video content. It’s also a groundbreaking effort in the public, professional use of volunteer translation. Over 9,000 translators donate their time, energy and expertise to share TEDTalks with the world. Their generosity and talent allow ideas to spread.

Our goal is to use technology to humanize,

not just in Los Altos,

but, kind of, on a global scale,

what's happening in education.

And actually,

that kind of brings an interesting point.

A lot of the effort

in humanizing the classroom

is focused on student-to-teacher ratios.

When you work on a translation

When you work on a translation

you get to learn a lot about the

subjects you're learning on

because you have to

look for the concepts

and you have to understand them

in order to convey the exact meaning

of what the speaker is saying

so working on TED Talks

has helped me

not get a mastery over something

but at least understand it better

so I can
