Life lessons through tinkering
-
0:00 - 0:04This is the exact moment
-
0:04 - 0:09that I started creating something called Tinkering School.
-
0:09 - 0:13Tinkering School is a place where kids can pick up sticks
-
0:13 - 0:17and hammers and other dangerous objects,
-
0:17 - 0:19and be trusted.
-
0:19 - 0:21Trusted not to hurt themselves,
-
0:21 - 0:25and trusted not to hurt others.
-
0:25 - 0:28Tinkering School doesn't follow a set curriculum,
-
0:28 - 0:30and there are no tests.
-
0:30 - 0:34We're not trying to teach anybody any specific thing.
-
0:34 - 0:37When the kids arrive
-
0:37 - 0:39they're confronted with lots of stuff:
-
0:39 - 0:43wood and nails and rope and wheels,
-
0:43 - 0:48and lots of tools, real tools.
-
0:48 - 0:53It's a six-day immersive experience for the kids.
-
0:53 - 0:57And within that context, we can offer the kids time --
-
0:57 - 1:00something that seems in short supply
-
1:00 - 1:03in their over-scheduled lives.
-
1:03 - 1:06Our goal is to ensure that they leave
-
1:06 - 1:08with a better sense of how to make things
-
1:08 - 1:11than when they arrived,
-
1:11 - 1:14and the deep internal realization
-
1:14 - 1:18that you can figure things out by fooling around.
-
1:18 - 1:23Nothing ever turns out as planned ... ever.
-
1:23 - 1:25(Laughter)
-
1:25 - 1:27And the kids soon learn
-
1:27 - 1:31that all projects go awry --
-
1:31 - 1:32(Laughter)
-
1:32 - 1:34and become at ease with the idea that every step
-
1:34 - 1:37in a project is a step closer
-
1:37 - 1:40to sweet success,
-
1:40 - 1:44or gleeful calamity.
-
1:44 - 1:48We start from doodles and sketches.
-
1:48 - 1:51And sometimes we make real plans.
-
1:51 - 1:55And sometimes we just start building.
-
1:55 - 1:58Building is at the heart of the experience:
-
1:58 - 2:01hands on, deeply immersed
-
2:01 - 2:05and fully committed to the problem at hand.
-
2:05 - 2:08Robin and I, acting as collaborators,
-
2:08 - 2:10keep the landscape of the projects
-
2:10 - 2:13tilted towards completion.
-
2:13 - 2:16Success is in the doing,
-
2:16 - 2:19and failures are celebrated and analyzed.
-
2:19 - 2:22Problems become puzzles
-
2:22 - 2:26and obstacles disappear.
-
2:26 - 2:28When faced with particularly difficult
-
2:28 - 2:30setbacks or complexities,
-
2:30 - 2:35a really interesting behavior emerges: decoration.
-
2:35 - 2:38(Laughter)
-
2:38 - 2:40Decoration of the unfinished project
-
2:40 - 2:44is a kind of conceptual incubation.
-
2:44 - 2:47From these interludes come deep insights
-
2:47 - 2:50and amazing new approaches to solving the problems
-
2:50 - 2:55that had them frustrated just moments before.
-
2:55 - 3:00All materials are available for use.
-
3:00 - 3:06Even those mundane, hateful, plastic grocery bags
-
3:06 - 3:08can become a bridge
-
3:08 - 3:12stronger than anyone imagined.
-
3:12 - 3:15And the things that they build
-
3:15 - 3:18amaze even themselves.
-
3:18 - 3:22Video: Three, two, one, go!
-
3:29 - 3:33Gever Tulley: A rollercoaster built by seven-year-olds.
-
3:33 - 3:36Video: Yay!
-
3:36 - 3:38(Applause)
-
3:38 - 3:41GT: Thank you. It's been a great pleasure.
-
3:41 - 3:47(Applause)

- Life lessons through tinkering

- Gever Tulley
- Description:
-
Gever Tulley uses engaging photos and footage to demonstrate the valuable lessons kids learn at his Tinkering School. When given tools, materials and guidance, these young imaginations run wild and creative problem-solving takes over to build unique boats, bridges and even a rollercoaster!
