10 1 About Design

  • 0:00 - 0:01
    Since we've been coding for
  • 0:01 - 0:05
a while now, I wanted to pause to
check back in with Roman Nurik at our
  • 0:05 - 0:08
Design Center in New York City
to talk a bit more about design.
  • 0:08 - 0:13
    [SOUND] Roman, once again,
    thanks for your time.
  • 0:13 - 0:16
Do you think that every mobile app
    developer should strive to become
  • 0:16 - 0:17
    a designer?
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    >> Well, I don't think it's
    necessarily important for
  • 0:20 - 0:24
every developer to become a designer,
and stop doing their engineering work.
  • 0:24 - 0:27
    I do think, though,
    that every developer,
  • 0:27 - 0:31
    every front end developer,
should have some sense of design.
  • 0:31 - 0:35
And I also think that, really,
    as a mobile developer,
  • 0:35 - 0:37
you're already doing design work, right?
  • 0:37 - 0:40
    Whether you like it or
    not, you are creating,
  • 0:40 - 0:43
    you're crafting the experience for
    the end-user.
  • 0:43 - 0:48
And so what I think is important is
just knowing that this is something that
  • 0:48 - 0:49
    you're participating in.
  • 0:49 - 0:51
    This is not something that
is being handed to you, and
  • 0:51 - 0:52
    you're just executing on.
  • 0:52 - 0:56
Knowing that this is something you're
participating in, I think it's super
  • 0:56 - 1:00
    important for developers to
really kind of study up on it.
  • 1:00 - 1:06
To get as good as possible at
    observing the differences,
  • 1:06 - 1:11
observing the little details and really
kind of caring about every little,
  • 1:11 - 1:14
I hate saying every little pixel, but
every little decision here and there.
  • 1:14 - 1:19
And so I think rather than saying every
    developer should become a designer,
  • 1:19 - 1:22
    I think every developer should
    really understand design.
  • 1:24 - 1:27
    Always understanding also that you're
going to be working in a team, and
  • 1:27 - 1:30
    kind of understanding what your
designers are good at and so forth.
  • 1:30 - 1:31
    So, yes.
  • 1:31 - 1:35
    [LAUGH]
    In short.
  • 1:35 - 1:37
    >> For me, that's super interesting.
  • 1:37 - 1:40
And you can definitely see how we're
using material in our cross platform
  • 1:40 - 1:41
    experiences here at Google.
  • 1:41 - 1:44
While being true, in many ways,
to the unique element of each platform.
  • 1:46 - 1:49
Design has become so much more important
in building applications of all sorts.
  • 1:49 - 1:52
And I think it's really important for
every engineer to at least be familiar
  • 1:52 - 1:55
    with the palliative options available
to them and to their designers.
  • 1:55 - 1:58
    To that end, Roman Nurik,
    Nick Butcher, and James Williams,
  • 1:58 - 2:01
    are developing a terrific
    course in material design,
  • 2:01 - 2:03
    that any front end engineer
    should experience.
