    I'm going to talk about education and
    neuroscience,

    both generally as the
    field's developing
  • 0:11 - 0:14
    but also, the specific work
    that we've been doing in this field.

    The Wellcome Trust -- OK --

    the Wellcome Trust, for those of you
    who don't know,
  • 0:23 - 0:26
    is the second largest charitable
    foundation globally,
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    with the aim of improving health.
  • 0:28 - 0:32
    And it does that by funding lots of
    bio-medical research, but also
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    by funding work in the social science
    and humanities,
  • 0:34 - 0:37
    funding lots of education work,
    doing lots of engagement work
  • 0:37 - 0:40
    and also lots of policy work.
  • 0:40 - 0:44
    So I'm going to talk through a few things
    this morning.

    Firstly, what has neuroscience got to do
    with education?
  • 0:47 - 0:50
    What impact is it having on education
    at the moment?
  • 0:50 - 0:54
    The work that we've been doing, and then
    thinking about the future.
  • 0:54 - 0:58
    So, what has neuroscience got to do
    with education?
  • 0:58 - 1:01
    Well, if education is about
    learning something,
  • 1:01 - 1:04
    be it knowledge or a skill,
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    and neuroscience is the study of
    the nervous system and the brain,
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    then they're pretty linked, in my opinion.
  • 1:08 - 1:14
    And it's not new to kind of talk about
    the brain, in relation to education.
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    People have been discussing this,
    critiquing it,
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    debating it for lots of years.
  • 1:18 - 1:22
    There's loads of research papers out there
    with titles such as
  • 1:23 - 1:26
    "A Bridge too far",
    "Its a Prime time to build a bridge",
  • 1:27 - 1:31
    "A two-way path is possible",
    "Buildng the bridge from both ends."
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    So lots of people have been talking
    about this bridge
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    but not many people have been building it.
  • 1:36 - 1:38
    And, this is kind of understandable
  • 1:38 - 1:43
    because it's probably only really in
    the last 10 years that neuroscience is,
  • 1:43 - 1:46
    the understanding from neuroscience
    has evolved significantly
  • 1:46 - 1:50
    that we can start to think about how
    it might have implications for the classroom.
  • 1:50 - 1:54
    And this is really exciting,
    and there is lots of potential
  • 1:54 - 1:56
    and its really understanding,
  • 1:56 - 2:00
    you can understand why teachers,
    why policy makers,
  • 2:00 - 2:06
    why technologists want to start applying
    some of these ideas to education.
  • 2:06 - 2:09
    But my word of warning that will go
    throughout this presentation
  • 2:09 - 2:14
    really is about waiting and doing
    the research and finding out
  • 2:14 - 2:17
    whether these things are actually going
    to be helpful and impactful
  • 2:17 - 2:18
    in the classroom.
  • 2:18 - 2:21
    And the other thing that I must say
    just before I go on
  • 2:21 - 2:25
    is that I am not saying in any way that
    neuroscience alone is the answer
  • 2:25 - 2:27
    and is going to solve all our problems
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    or can tell us everything
    about the classroom.
  • 2:29 - 2:32
    That's a very complex ecosystem.
  • 2:32 - 2:37
    But, neuroscience is
    a kind of a newish field
  • 2:37 - 2:41
    where we can start using that
    alongside psychology,
  • 2:41 - 2:45
    alongside educational research,
    and alongside teacher's knowledge
  • 2:45 - 2:48
    to build something really good
    for the future
  • 2:48 - 2:53
    and see if we can start improving
    learning in the classroom.
  • 2:53 - 2:58
    So, what impact is neuroscience
    having on education?
  • 2:58 - 3:01
    So, we're at an education conference --
  • 3:01 - 3:03
    I thought I'd wait and see
    what you guys think.
  • 3:03 - 3:08
    So, I'm going to put a few statements
    up on the board, as any good teacher does.
  • 3:08 - 3:11
    And what I would like you to do is
    just simply raise your hand
  • 3:11 - 3:16
    if you agree with the statement,
    if you think it's true.
  • 3:16 - 3:19
    So: "We mostly only use 10% of our brain."
  • 3:19 - 3:21
    Hands up if you agree.
  • 3:21 - 3:23
    OK.
    I will just show you this:

    These are some stats, I'll show you
    the paper this comes from in a second.

    This was a survey of teachers
    in five countries
  • 3:29 - 3:34
    and those are the percentages
    of the teachers that agree.
  • 3:34 - 3:40
    Hum -- it's not really working, but
    I can tell you that this is not true
  • 3:40 - 3:44
    -- uh, there we go -- even sat there now,
    you might think you're not doing very much
  • 3:44 - 3:48
    but your brain is still in control
    of your breathing,
  • 3:48 - 3:52
    in control of your heart rate, keeping you
    standing up, sitting upright,
  • 3:52 - 3:56
    perhaps paying attention, maybe not,
    maybe mind-wandering
  • 3:56 - 3:59
    but it's all using your brain,
    all parts of your brain.
  • 3:59 - 4:01
    So that's one of these myths.
  • 4:01 - 4:05
    Second one: "Individuals lean better
    when they receive information
  • 4:05 - 4:08
    "in their preferred learning style."
  • 4:08 - 4:11
    So visually, by seeing,
    auditory, by hearing,
  • 4:11 - 4:12
    or kinesthetically, by doing things.
  • 4:12 - 4:18
    Hands up if you agree with that statement.
  • 4:18 - 4:19
    OK.
  • 4:19 - 4:26
    You can see, across the board, teachers
    in lots of countries agree with this.
  • 4:26 - 4:33
    (Laughter)
    Yes. So (she laughs)
  • 4:33 - 4:36
    It is true that people have a preference.
  • 4:36 - 4:39
    You might prefer to learn something
    in a particular way,
  • 4:39 - 4:41
    you might feel that you are
    a visual learner,
  • 4:41 - 4:46
    and that you learn better in that,
    by using stuff visually:
  • 4:46 - 4:50
    you do have a preference; but researches
    show that you don't learn any better
  • 4:50 - 4:57
    if you are showing the material
    in that particular way, believe it or not.
  • 4:57 - 4:58
    One last one:

    "Differences in hemispheric dominance,
    left or right brain, can help to explain
  • 5:02 - 5:04
    "individual differences amongst learners."
  • 5:04 - 5:06
    Hands up if you agree.

    We might start to see a pattern,
    I don't know.
  • 5:09 - 5:13
    (Laughter)
    So, here is some stats.

    Really high in the UK.
  • 5:16 - 5:19
    Again, it's not true.
  • 5:19 - 5:22
    If you hear things about integrating
    the right or left brain,
  • 5:22 - 5:25
    or if you hear things about
    one side of your brain is the logical side
  • 5:25 - 5:30
    and the other side is more mathsy --
    sorry, creative, it's just not true.
  • 5:30 - 5:33
    And I'm going to skip the next one.

    But this one is true.

    OK, I can tell you a little more about that.

    If you want to see more
    about these neuromyths,

    This is a really good paper written by
    Paul Howard Jones last year.

    It got a lot of interest on social media
  • 5:47 - 5:51
    and it goes through lots of what
    these common neuromyths are.
  • 5:51 - 5:53
    So, neuromyths:
    Where do they come from?
  • 5:53 - 5:56
    Are they a problem?
    And what to do about them?
  • 5:56 - 5:58
    So, generally they often come from
    some kind of science
  • 5:58 - 6:05
    that's been over- or misinterpreted,
    and they tend to stick around (excuse me)
  • 6:05 - 6:07
    because they are easy to understand or
  • 6:07 - 6:10
    easy to kind of implement
    in the classroom.
  • 6:10 - 6:12
    Are they a problem?
  • 6:12 - 6:17
    Well, if you think you only use
    10% of your brain, is that a problem?
  • 6:17 - 6:19
    Possibly not, it's not accurate,
  • 6:19 - 6:22
    but when I first started teaching
    about nine years ago,
  • 6:22 - 6:24
    and this was common in lots of schools
    across the UK,
  • 6:24 - 6:26
    I'm not sure about in other countries,
  • 6:26 - 6:30
    students were asked to fill
    a questionnaire about how they learned,
  • 6:30 - 6:31
    and did they like learning in this way.
  • 6:31 - 6:35
    And teachers were given a spreadsheet
    with students
  • 6:35 - 6:38
    and which were their preferred
    learning styles.
  • 6:38 - 6:40
    And teachers were encouraged to make sure
    that they were providing
  • 6:40 - 6:44
    information for those students
    in that particular way.
  • 6:44 - 6:46
    And I'd say that is a bit of a problem,
  • 6:46 - 6:49
    because teachers were potentially
    wasting time
  • 6:49 - 6:51
    or feeling that they should be doing
    something
  • 6:51 - 6:53
    that was not actually benefiting
    the students.
  • 6:53 - 6:58
    A positive outcome was that lessons
    became more diverse,
  • 6:58 - 7:01
    ............... (check) about a range of
    activities
  • 7:01 - 7:04
    but at the same time, students would say
    things like:
  • 7:04 - 7:08
    "Miss, I'm not doing this activity
    because I'm a kinesthetic learner."
  • 7:08 - 7:11
    And so students were themselves
    limiting themselves
  • 7:11 - 7:14
    and not getting the benefit of learning
    in multiple modalities,
  • 7:14 - 7:16
    which is the way you learn best,
  • 7:16 - 7:21
    by using different ways of learning
    the same information. 7:19
  • 7:21 - 7:23
    So, what to do about them?
  • 7:23 - 7:28
    Well, I might come on to that a bit later
    in what we're going to do.
  • 7:28 - 7:32
    So, the research is carrying on, but
    lots of research in this area
  • 7:32 - 7:36
    is still at the stage of it's
    about cells in a Petri dish
  • 7:36 - 7:40
    It might be about finding out about
    what's going on in animals,
  • 7:40 - 7:44
    or very small-scale trials of humans,
    but maybe in a lab.
  • 7:44 - 7:46
    Not much is going on in the classroom.
  • 7:46 - 7:50
    And so we set p this initiative,
    Education Neuroscience Initiative
  • 7:50 - 7:52
    with the Education Endowment Foundation,
  • 7:52 - 7:57
    who are the What Works Centre of
    Education in the UK.
  • 7:57 - 7:59
    And we did it for two reasons:
  • 7:59 - 8:03
    we wanted to build the evidence of
    what works in education,
  • 8:03 - 8:05
    informed by neuroscience,
  • 8:05 - 8:08
    and we also wanted to help support
    teachers and general educators
  • 8:08 - 8:11
    with what we do and don't know. (check)
  • 8:11 - 8:14
    So, we firstly launched a funding round,
  • 8:14 - 8:18
    to get people to apply for money
    to do research in the space,
  • 8:18 - 8:23
    and all the projects had to have some
    evidence that they will -- that they work,
  • 8:23 - 8:24
    some pilot data.
  • 8:24 - 8:26
    But they also had to be scalable
    and affordable,
  • 8:26 - 8:28
    so that if we find that
    these things worked,
  • 8:28 - 8:31
    that they could be rolled out,
    that they could lead to policy changes,
  • 8:31 - 8:34
    that they could be available to everybody.
  • 8:34 - 8:38
    And there is particular emphasis as well
    around disadvantaged students.
  • 8:38 - 8:40
    We want to do something
    that would benefit all,
  • 8:40 - 8:43
    and try and close the socioeconomic gap.
  • 8:43 - 8:47
    And all of our projects are also paired
    with an independent evaluator.
  • 8:47 - 8:50
    So, you have your project team
    and you also have an evaluation team.
  • 8:50 - 8:55
    And that evaluation team helps to shape
    the methodology that's used,
  • 8:55 - 8:57
    make sure it's robust, educationally.
  • 8:57 - 9:01
    They also collect some of the first data
    and they also report on that data first.
  • 9:01 - 9:06
    So there is no chance for the project team
    to maybe overstate claims
  • 9:06 - 9:09
    about what they found.
  • 9:09 - 9:13
    So we funded these projects
    and these are all taking place
  • 9:13 - 9:17
    in around 50 to 100 schools,
    each in the UK.
  • 9:17 - 9:20
    I won't talk about all of them,
    but I'll just whiz through a couple.
  • 9:20 - 9:27
    Fit to Study is looking at great research
    around how more vigorous activity
  • 9:27 - 9:29
    can influence learning,
    short- and long-term.
  • 9:29 - 9:33
    We know this from lots of research
    in animals and from small-group studies,
  • 9:33 - 9:37
    but nobody has done anything in the UK
    on this scale.
  • 9:37 - 9:40
    And so we're looking at changing
    what happens in P.E. lessons,
  • 9:40 - 9:44
    and then measuring the short- and
    long-term outcomes of those students.
  • 9:44 - 9:48
    Teen Sleep has had a certain media coverage.
  • 9:48 - 9:50
    And that's looking at we know,
    researchers know,
  • 9:50 - 9:52
    neuroscientists will tell you,
  • 9:52 - 9:55
    we know that teens have
    a different sleep-wake cycle,
  • 9:55 - 9:58
    their circadian rhythm is altered
    by a couple of hours.
  • 9:58 - 10:00
    So they don't feel tired in the evenings,
  • 10:00 - 10:02
    it's really hard to get them up
    in the morning,
  • 10:02 - 10:05
    they are not fit and ready
    to start learning early in the morning.
  • 10:05 - 10:09
    So we're studying, at a late school start
    time against a sleep education program,
  • 10:09 - 10:13
    where we just teach them about
    the importance of their sleep,
  • 10:13 - 10:17
    how to get good sleep, about
    using technology just before bed
  • 10:17 - 10:20
    and about how that might affect
    their sleep -- not in a positive way --
  • 10:20 - 10:27
    and looking again
    at their academic outcomes.
  • 10:27 - 10:30
    These are two projects
    which are both in primary schools.
  • 10:30 - 10:34
    They're training very young children:
    one, a different way to learn reading,
  • 10:34 - 10:40
    one, about training their inhibitions
    that they're better equipped
  • 10:40 - 10:42
    when they learn science and maths,
    when they come across
  • 10:42 - 10:48
    these kind of counter-intuitive ideas.
  • 10:48 - 10:51
    Engaging the brain's reward system
    from Paul Howard Jones.

    This one is maybe of particular interest
    because it's taking ideas from gaming,
  • 10:56 - 11:00
    the idea of why games are so engaging
    and motivating.
  • 11:00 - 11:05
    Neuroscientists have discovered
    it's this idea of uncertain rewards,
  • 11:05 - 11:09
    so not the consistency that we
    see in schools around the world
  • 11:09 - 11:11
    of you get something right,
    you get a point,
  • 11:11 - 11:14
    but you get something right
    and you can game that point.
  • 11:14 - 11:16
    You might double it.
    You might get nothing.
  • 11:16 - 11:19
    And they've shown that
    that ramps up dopamine
  • 11:19 - 11:24
    in your brain and the rewards system
    makes it very engaging, motivating,
  • 11:24 - 11:29
    and hopefully, a very teachable moment
    for students.
  • 11:29 - 11:34
    And the last one is spaced learning,
    and this is being actually led by
  • 11:34 - 11:38
    a school in collaboration
    with neuroscientists and psychologists.
  • 11:38 - 11:42
    And they're looking at ideas from
    neuroscience and psychology
  • 11:42 - 11:44
    and trying to work out what really
    works in the classroom
  • 11:44 - 11:49
    in terms of repeated learning and what
    the spaces are between that learning.

    So that's just a quick oversight.

    Um, very quickly I'll mention
    the Education Endowment Foundation

    has a very useful toolkit that
    talks about different interventions.

    It talks about the cost of those
    interventions

    and the level of the evidence
    and how effective it is.

    And they've got a set of projects
    all around digital technologies
  • 12:13 - 12:16
    which you might be interested in.

    So, that's the research.

    We have to sit and wait now
    for four years
  • 12:20 - 12:24
    to find out how some of the outcomes
    of some of those studies,
  • 12:24 - 12:25
    what they'll be.
  • 12:25 - 12:27
    And we're just as interested to find out
    if they're effective as if they're not,
  • 12:27 - 12:29
    because we'll then know to say
    to teachers, "Don't bother changing
  • 12:29 - 12:35
    "your school start time.
    It has no impact."
  • 12:35 - 12:37
    So what we're doing.
  • 12:37 - 12:40
    We're trying to support teachers
    with what we know
  • 12:40 - 12:42
    because we don't want these
    neuro-myths being perpetuated.
  • 12:42 - 12:47
    We think teachers need to be empowered
    with really what we do know.
  • 12:47 - 12:51
    So we did something earlier this year,
    a very quick, set up very quickly.
  • 12:51 - 12:53
    And it was an online event where
    we had neuroscientists
  • 12:53 - 12:55
    and psychologists online.
  • 12:55 - 12:57
    And teachers could log on and
    ask them any questions
  • 12:57 - 13:01
    about the brain or learning.
  • 13:01 - 13:05
    And we had about 7,000 people
    engaged with it,
  • 13:05 - 13:07
    but we know that that's not enough.
  • 13:07 - 13:12
    So what we're doing is we're currently
    crowdsourcing information
  • 13:12 - 13:16
    from neuroscientists, psychologist,
    educational academics across the globe.
  • 13:16 - 13:19
    And we're going to develop, hopefully,
    some really good resources
  • 13:19 - 13:22
    for teachers that give them a summary
    of the research area,
  • 13:22 - 13:27
    be it reward, motivation, about
    learning differences.
  • 13:27 - 13:31
    But it will also give them an idea
    of how developed that research is.
  • 13:31 - 13:35
    Is it just in cells in a lab or is it
    being tested in the classroom?
  • 13:35 - 13:39
    And finally, it gives them also some
    other reputable sources of information
  • 13:39 - 13:43
    to go to, so that people are
    finding out about research
  • 13:43 - 13:46
    and scientific findings are factual,
    hopefully.
  • 13:46 - 13:48
    And then we're gonna do another
    online event where we get
  • 13:48 - 13:51
    neuroscientists, psychologists,
    educational academics.
  • 13:51 - 13:55
    And hopefully, by enabling this
    conversation,
  • 13:55 - 13:58
    scientific findings won't be over-
    or misinterpreted.

    People can ask the questions
    about the research.

    This is very much a developing,
    building area of research.

    The Education Endowment
    Foundation did a lit review,

    so this paper gives lots of ideas
    about all the bits of areas

    of neuroscience that could be
    applied to education,
  • 14:33 - 14:37
    the distance from the classroom,
    and how solid that evidence is.

    So you can find out a bit more there.

    We also had a phone call
    with the White House earlier this year.

    They're very interested.
  • 14:43 - 14:45
    They're working out what they
    should be doing in this space.

    So it's very exciting but early stages.

    Um, so more about the future.

    Quickly flipped to my notes
    cause I can't remember all of this.

    There's lots of interesting areas
    that are very promising
  • 14:58 - 15:02
    in this field of research:
  • 15:02 - 15:04
    things about stimulation
    of young children
  • 15:04 - 15:08
    and how that actually has
    a huge impact on their development.
  • 15:08 - 15:12
    And that might have big implications
    in lower and middle income countries.
  • 15:12 - 15:17
    Recognizing that teenagers and
    adolescence is a very distinct time,
  • 15:17 - 15:19
    and they might need different
    things in terms of
  • 15:19 - 15:23
    to support their learning
    compared to adults.
  • 15:23 - 15:27
    We are learning lots more about
    reward, motivation, attention,
  • 15:27 - 15:30
    about neuroplasticity,
    how our brains are very plastic
  • 15:30 - 15:33
    and how they can continue to learn
    throughout life,
  • 15:33 - 15:37
    and how that actual cognitive demand
    on your brain might be good
  • 15:37 - 15:43
    at staving off neurological
    degenerative diseases later in life.
  • 15:43 - 15:46
    There's work around fostering
    better creativity,
  • 15:46 - 15:48
    around specifics in maths, English,
    and science,
  • 15:48 - 15:51
    the impact of stress on learning,
  • 15:51 - 15:54
    earlier screening for learning disorders,
  • 15:54 - 15:59
    and hopefully also, this will become
    something that is much more embedded
  • 15:59 - 16:02
    and ingrained in teacher training.
  • 16:02 - 16:07
    So very quickly, the issues I think,
    are that research takes time.
  • 16:07 - 16:10
    We shouldn't over-interpret
    in individual studies.
  • 16:10 - 16:16
    And this translation is a new
    work-in-progress.
  • 16:16 - 16:20
    But there's loads of potential,
    lots of exciting opportunities.
  • 16:20 - 16:23
    But we need multi-disciplinary
    teams working on this,
  • 16:23 - 16:26
    including educational technologists.
  • 16:26 - 16:28
    We need to get good information
    out to teachers.
  • 16:28 - 16:31
    We also need to give them the tools
    to ask the right questions
  • 16:31 - 16:34
    so that they can ask what
    things are based on,
  • 16:34 - 16:37
    of their studies, has research been done.
  • 16:37 - 16:41
    And we might end up with some
    things that lead to
  • 16:41 - 16:43
    some very interesting policy changes.
  • 16:43 - 16:45
    But that's a few years down the line.
