What's going on with me right now... Kati Morton, how do you become a therapist?

  • 0:00 - 0:02
    Hi everyone.
  • 0:02 - 0:12
This week's video is kind of a little bit behind the scenes
  • 0:15 - 0:18
Many of you have asked, Kati, what is it that you do everyday? I want to see what you do.
  • 0:23 - 0:23
    So, stay tuned.
  • 0:23 - 0:30
    music
  • 0:30 - 0:31
So, like I said, this week's video is a little behind the scenes.
  • 0:31 - 0:31
What is going on with me?
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    What do I do everyday?
  • 0:33 - 0:34
And other than my regular job and everything
  • 0:34 - 0:35
I know many of you have already told you
  • 0:35 - 0:36
that I'm studying to take my licensing exam.
  • 0:36 - 0:38
    So stressful
  • 0:38 - 0:39
but, what that really means, and what
  • 0:39 - 0:42
many of you might be feeling
  • 0:42 - 0:44
on the outside is it may take me two days
  • 0:44 - 0:46
to get back to you when you message me
  • 0:46 - 0:47
or when you leave a comment.
  • 0:47 - 0:50
It might take me a little while.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
Or, you may be like, Kati, I sent you a video
  • 0:52 - 0:54
and it took you over a day to watch it
  • 0:54 - 0:56
and you used to be like quick return. And
  • 0:56 - 1:00
so you might be feeling a little bit of
  • 1:00 - 1:02
that. It's really because it's just me.
  • 1:02 - 1:04
If there were crickets, I would cue crickets.
  • 1:04 - 1:05
right now because it is just me.
  • 1:05 - 1:06
And I wish I had little people
  • 1:06 - 1:09
    that could help me out
  • 1:09 - 1:15
and comment and do things. But, it's just me.
  • 1:15 - 1:17
So, because I am, just to give you a little
  • 1:17 - 1:19
background. Many of you ask me, Kati, how
  • 1:19 - 1:22
do I become a therapist like you? How do I
  • 1:22 - 1:24
become a person who specializes in
  • 1:24 - 1:27
eating disorders? And really, what I did,
  • 1:27 - 1:29
is I went to a four year college, so go
  • 1:29 - 1:31
to university and got my undergraduate
  • 1:31 - 1:33
degree in psychology. You can't really
  • 1:33 - 1:37
specialize any more than that at that
  • 1:37 - 1:39
level, it's just pyschology. So, I got my
  • 1:39 - 1:41
bachelor's in psychology. Then, I went on
  • 1:41 - 1:44
for a two year degree with a master's in
  • 1:44 - 1:46
clinical psychology with an emphasis in
  • 1:46 - 1:49
marriage and family therapy. And that's
  • 1:49 - 1:52
why at the end of my name you see MFTI,
  • 1:52 - 1:55
marriage and family therapy. The I stands
  • 1:55 - 1:57
for intern. So what that means is that
  • 1:57 - 2:01
since I have graduated, I have been working
  • 2:01 - 2:03
and doing all these hours towards the 3000
  • 2:03 - 2:05
hours that I have to gather in the state
  • 2:05 - 2:10
of California to be able to take my
  • 2:10 - 2:11
licensing exam. Okay? So I hope that
  • 2:11 - 2:13
kind of makes sense. Four year degree,
  • 2:13 - 2:16
then my two year degree, and then 3000
  • 2:16 - 2:20
hours of working with my clients and
  • 2:21 - 2:21
running groups and many of you already
  • 2:21 - 2:22
know that have been following me for a
  • 2:22 - 2:24
long time, I started out working in a
  • 2:24 - 2:27
    residential eating disorder clinic. That's
  • 2:27 - 2:30
when my passion for eating disorders
  • 2:30 - 2:31
really sprung to life and I knew what I
  • 2:32 - 2:34
wanted to do. And from there, I went and
  • 2:34 - 2:36
worked at a day program and then I went
  • 2:36 - 2:38
into the hospital setting. And now, I do
  • 2:40 - 2:41
outpatient work. So that's kind of how
  • 2:41 - 2:41
I've gathered my 3000 hours. And so what
  • 2:41 - 2:42
that means for me now is yay! it's so
  • 2:42 - 2:44
exciting! I'm all done! four years of
  • 2:44 - 2:48
intense work and lots of hours and sweat
  • 2:48 - 2:49
and blood and all that good stuff
  • 2:49 - 2:52
into what I'm doing, and now, I am
  • 2:52 - 2:56
working and taking classes, the Jerry
  • 2:56 - 3:00
Grossman seminars, holy mother of God,
  • 3:00 - 3:03
this is so much stuff to learn. And this
  • 3:03 - 3:04
is only one book. I have other things that
  • 3:04 - 3:07
I'll demonstrate the intense amount of
  • 3:07 - 3:08
things I have to learn. But, on the
  • 3:08 - 3:10
weekends, Saturday and Sunday, I am taking
  • 3:10 - 3:12
these seminars, these classes, so that I
  • 3:12 - 3:16
can prepare properly to take my exam. So,
  • 3:16 - 3:18
once I hear back from the BBS, the Board
  • 3:18 - 3:21
of Behavioral Sciences, who says, yes,
  • 3:21 - 3:22
    you're good, Kati, you've done your 3000
  • 3:22 - 3:25
hours, we love you, you're amazing, you
  • 3:25 - 3:27
can take your exam. One of two
  • 3:27 - 3:29
there is a standard written one and the
  • 3:29 - 3:30
    clinical vinegiette. Two portions of
  • 3:30 - 3:33
exams. So I will let you all know and I
  • 3:33 - 3:34
will keep you up to date with what's
  • 3:34 - 3:36
    happening and what I've heard
  • 3:36 - 3:38
Because hopefully I'll hear back before
  • 3:38 - 3:42
too long and then I can take my standard
  • 3:42 - 3:45
written exam, pass that, yeah, positive
  • 3:45 - 3:47
thinking, the power of positive thinking,
  • 3:47 - 3:49
and then I'll take my clinical vinegiette
  • 3:49 - 3:53
exam, and then I'll be Kati Morton MFT.
  • 3:53 - 3:54
I have to get excited because it's a lot
  • 3:54 - 3:56
of work and it's a lot of hours and I've
  • 3:56 - 3:59
been really tired. Like, I said, I'm
  • 3:59 - 4:03
only one person. So, just bear with me.
  • 4:03 - 4:05
Understand that I am still there for you.
  • 4:05 - 4:07
I'm doing my best to make sure that I
  • 4:07 - 4:09
reach all of my, I call my fantastic
  • 4:09 - 4:12
five. The fantastic five of the things
  • 4:12 - 4:14
of my social media sites that I'm on
  • 4:14 - 4:16
and I plan on keeping it very up to date.
  • 4:16 - 4:18
and doing things as much as I can.
  • 4:18 - 4:20
But just be a little patient with me, know
  • 4:20 - 4:24
that it has nothing to do with you. Don't
  • 4:24 - 4:25
take offense, I guess is the best way
  • 4:25 - 4:28
to put it. It's just me being busy.
  • 4:28 - 4:30
And I'm already pretty busy and so to
  • 4:30 - 4:33
add in a full weekend, nine to three on
  • 4:33 - 4:36
Saturdays and nine to five on
  • 4:36 - 4:36
Sundays of classes is just really
  • 4:36 - 4:38
exhausting. I mean, look at this,
  • 4:38 - 4:41
these are your flashcards. Holy sweet
  • 4:41 - 4:47
jeez. Really? So, anyway, they sent you
  • 4:47 - 4:48
like this ten pound box full of things,
  • 4:48 - 4:52
it's like all of these books and I'm like
  • 4:52 - 4:55
panicking, but so far, the classes seem
  • 4:55 - 4:57
really helpful. It's gonna be a breeze.
  • 4:57 - 4:59
I'm gonna be very prepared and ready to
  • 4:59 - 5:01
go so we can keep moving together towards
  • 5:01 - 5:02
a healthy mind and a healthy body, right?
  • 5:02 - 5:04
Because that's what it's all about and I'm
  • 5:04 - 5:06
very excited for this step to happen, so
  • 5:06 - 5:08
that I can get back to doing what
  • 5:08 - 5:10
I love to do, which is helping all of you.
  • 5:10 - 5:12
And if you have any questions, i know lots
  • 5:12 - 5:14
of you always ask me: How do I become a
  • 5:14 - 5:16
therapist? How does that work? And if
  • 5:16 - 5:17
you have any more questions, if there's
  • 5:17 - 5:19
something that I said that wasn't clear
  • 5:19 - 5:21
and you felt like, hey, I don't
  • 5:21 - 5:23
understand, leave that below, let me know.
  • 5:23 - 5:25
Hey Kati, I want to know more information
  • 5:25 - 5:26
about yada. Or if you want to know the
  • 5:26 - 5:29
difference between an MFT and other veins
  • 5:29 - 5:31
of the therapy world, I would be happy
  • 5:31 - 5:32
to answer that too. I just didn't want to
  • 5:32 - 5:35
get too bogged down with all of these
  • 5:35 - 5:36
different things. I wanted to let you know
  • 5:36 - 5:39
where I'm at and what I'm doing all day,
  • 5:39 - 5:41
Saturday and Sunday. It's so very
  • 5:41 - 5:43
exciting. You can't even believe my
  • 5:43 - 5:46
excitement. So, anyway, make sure to
  • 5:46 - 5:48
subscribe to my channel because I do
  • 5:48 - 5:50
plan on still, or I guess this way,
  • 5:50 - 5:51
I feel like I'm always doing the disco,
  • 5:51 - 5:54
but I will still be putting out videos.
  • 5:54 - 5:56
Don't worry, don't fret! The videos
  • 5:56 - 5:58
will still be coming out. I'll probably
  • 5:58 - 6:00
just you know be doing little filming
  • 6:00 - 6:02
where I tell you what's going on, I may
  • 6:02 - 6:05
do a little vlog of my own, where I'm
  • 6:05 - 6:07
like, hey, I'm in the car and today I'm
  • 6:07 - 6:10
doing this blah blah. And if you
  • 6:10 - 6:12
like that kind of stuff, let me know. Like
  • 6:12 - 6:14
if you like the little behind the scenes
  • 6:14 - 6:14
and you want more, give me a little
  • 6:14 - 6:16
thumbs up. Because I'll keep sharing
  • 6:16 - 6:17
and letting you know what's going on with
  • 6:17 - 6:20
me and where I'm at and I'll keep you
  • 6:20 - 6:23
posted on the status of the licensing exam.
  • 6:23 - 6:24
    Because it's really exctiing
  • 6:24 - 6:27
I'm very tired now because I've been in
  • 6:27 - 6:29
class all day, that's why I'm kind of
  • 6:29 - 6:32
dragging. But I'm very excited, this
  • 6:32 - 6:33
is a big step for Healthy Mind, Healthy
  • 6:33 - 6:35
Body. This is so exciting because
  • 6:35 - 6:37
this means that I'm on my own, I'm
  • 6:37 - 6:40
doing my thing, I'm a licensed therapist.
  • 6:40 - 6:41
And that's al of work and that's a lot
  • 6:41 - 6:45
of hours and it's almost like you've
  • 6:45 - 6:46
worked so hard. It's like the end
  • 6:46 - 6:48
of treatment, when you know you're feeling
  • 6:48 - 6:50
recovered and you're kind of scared to
  • 6:50 - 6:52
let go of the safety blanket, but you're
  • 6:52 - 6:52
like, yeah, there's so much out there. So
  • 6:52 - 6:56
that's where I'm at and it's very exciting.
  • 6:56 - 6:59
Subscribe to my channel, stay tuned,
  • 6:59 - 7:00
leave your comments below if you have any
  • 7:00 - 7:01
questions and let me know if you
  • 7:01 - 7:03
like this kind of video because I'll
  • 7:03 - 7:05
put more out then, okay? And we'll work
  • 7:05 - 7:08
together, we're taking some big steps
  • 7:08 - 7:10
    together towards a healthy mind
  • 7:10 - 7:12
    and a healthy body.
