Think You've Committed the Unpardonable Sin? Find a Promise - Tim Conway

  • 0:01 - 0:05
    Just this week,
  • 0:05 - 0:09
I received a phone call from a man.
  • 0:09 - 0:14
Professing Christian for a long time.
  • 0:14 - 0:22
    Even in the ministry.
  • 0:22 - 0:27
Living in all manner of immorality.
  • 0:27 - 0:31
    Do you know what happened?
  • 0:31 - 0:35
A friend of his turned on
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    Paul Washer's message -
  • 0:37 - 0:40
I think it's the same one
    that was preached here:
  • 0:40 - 0:41
    "Examine Yourself"
  • 0:41 - 0:46
    Maybe the very same message.
  • 0:46 - 0:51
    This man was laid bare,
  • 0:51 - 0:54
    and he recognized,
  • 0:54 - 0:56
    I don't measure up.
  • 0:56 - 0:59
And do you know what he fears now?
  • 0:59 - 1:01
    Is being in the ministry,
    having so much light,
  • 1:01 - 1:04
having this false profession for so long,
  • 1:04 - 1:07
    living in this immorality.
  • 1:07 - 1:09
You know what he's afraid of now?
  • 1:09 - 1:12
    That he's Esau.
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    He's afraid he's committed
    the unpardonable sin.
  • 1:14 - 1:16
He's afraid he's gone too far
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    and there's no way back.
  • 1:18 - 1:20
Now, I'll tell you this -
  • 1:20 - 1:22
I'll tell you what I told him.
  • 1:22 - 1:28
I can't tell you that there is a way back.
  • 1:28 - 1:30
The truth is there is a line in Scripture
  • 1:30 - 1:33
    that when men cross it,
    there's no way back.
  • 1:33 - 1:38
There is a Hebrews 6 reality.
  • 1:38 - 1:39
There is a place men come to
  • 1:39 - 1:42
that there is no more repentance.
  • 1:42 - 1:47
He told me that his friends and counselors
  • 1:47 - 1:49
had sent him to the Word of God.
  • 1:49 - 1:52
    That's good.
  • 1:52 - 1:57
    To look at passages that
    dealt with the cross.
  • 1:57 - 2:01
    I told him that's good.
  • 2:01 - 2:04
But you see what he could tell me:
  • 2:04 - 2:07
"Well, I believe He went to the cross.
  • 2:07 - 2:08
    I believe He died.
  • 2:08 - 2:11
    I believe everything I'm reading.
  • 2:11 - 2:14
I just don't know if it's for me."
  • 2:14 - 2:15
    I told him, "exactly."
  • 2:15 - 2:19
    That is exactly the issue.
  • 2:19 - 2:21
I said, "What you need to do
  • 2:21 - 2:26
is you need to find that one verse..."
  • 2:26 - 2:32
    that he can sink his faith into;
  • 2:32 - 2:35
that he can say, "That's for me."
  • 2:35 - 2:36
You see, that's where faith is.
  • 2:36 - 2:38
    Saving faith isn't saying:
  • 2:38 - 2:41
    "I believe Jesus was a
    true historical figure."
  • 2:41 - 2:45
    It's not saying, "I believe
    Jesus went to the cross."
  • 2:45 - 2:46
    It's got to be personalized.
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    There's got to be something
    you can hang on
  • 2:48 - 2:50
that you know is for you,
  • 2:50 - 2:52
    because you know what the
devil's going to do to him?
  • 2:52 - 2:54
The devil's already doing it to him.
  • 2:54 - 2:57
He's there whispering in his ear:
  • 2:57 - 2:58
    "After what you've done,
  • 2:58 - 3:00
    there's no hope for you.
  • 3:00 - 3:01
    You are Esau."
  • 3:01 - 3:02
He just keeps hearing that in his ear
  • 3:02 - 3:04
    over and over and over.
  • 3:04 - 3:05
You know how you answer that?
  • 3:05 - 3:11
You answer that with the kind of promise
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    that resists the devil;
  • 3:13 - 3:17
that the devil simply cannot answer.
  • 3:17 - 3:20
    What do you tell him?
  • 3:20 - 3:24
    I told him, "You may
    have crossed that line."
  • 3:24 - 3:26
But I know this, that if he can find
  • 3:26 - 3:28
    any promise in this book
  • 3:28 - 3:33
that he can lay his faith onto,
  • 3:33 - 3:35
    he will not be disappointed.
  • 3:35 - 3:37
    He will not be confounded.
He will not be cast away.
  • 3:37 - 3:40
Because that's what saving faith is.
  • 3:40 - 3:42
And you know as I was thinking
  • 3:42 - 3:44
after I got off the phone with him,
  • 3:44 - 3:45
    I start thinking about,
  • 3:45 - 3:49
what sort of verses are they
  • 3:49 - 3:51
that a man in that condition might find?
  • 3:51 - 3:53
I mean, if he was going through Scripture,
  • 3:53 - 3:56
    what might be one verse?
  • 3:56 - 4:00
I'll tell you one that jumped out at me.
  • 4:00 - 4:02
And sometimes they can be obscure verses,
  • 4:02 - 4:05
    and sometimes you may think
  • 4:05 - 4:07
that they're not even dealing with
  • 4:07 - 4:12
    the very thing that you
take it in faith to mean.
  • 4:12 - 4:16
    But if you take it in faith to mean it;
  • 4:16 - 4:20
if you take it in faith
    that you're trusting
  • 4:20 - 4:24
    the God behind these things...
  • 4:24 - 4:25
I mean, we could just look at that -
  • 4:25 - 4:29
the broadness of some of God's promises.
  • 4:29 - 4:31
    I mean, you know what?
  • 4:31 - 4:36
You think about how in Isaiah 53,
  • 4:36 - 4:40
how by His stripes we're healed.
  • 4:40 - 4:43
Does it blow anybody away that Matthew
  • 4:43 - 4:45
    basically in Matthew 9 says
  • 4:45 - 4:48
    He's healing the people,
    thus fulfilling that?
  • 4:48 - 4:50
    You're like wait a second,
  • 4:50 - 4:54
    I thought that was spiritual
    healing back there.
  • 4:54 - 4:56
    And Jesus is physically healing.
  • 4:56 - 4:58
We might just talk about the broadness
  • 4:58 - 5:03
    of some of God's promises.
  • 5:03 - 5:05
But I got to thinking about this.
  • 5:05 - 5:09
    Jesus Himself says,
  • 5:09 - 5:13
"If somebody strikes you on one cheek,
  • 5:13 - 5:18
turn to him the other also."
  • 5:18 - 5:24
If a man could just find hope there.
  • 5:24 - 5:29
I've struck Him in the cheek
  • 5:29 - 5:31
    by my actions,
  • 5:31 - 5:33
but He is such a God
  • 5:33 - 5:35
    who sends His Son
  • 5:35 - 5:37
who is the radiance of the glory of God,
  • 5:37 - 5:40
and He is the kind that teaches us
  • 5:40 - 5:43
that if we're struck, turn the other also.
  • 5:43 - 5:45
I mean, if He's teaching that to us,
  • 5:45 - 5:53
is He not also a God who takes many blows,
  • 5:53 - 5:57
many dishonorings and yet is still willing
  • 5:57 - 6:01
    to turn the other cheek?
  • 6:01 - 6:04
    Or, how about this?
  • 6:04 - 6:09
    In Joel 2, God says,
  • 6:09 - 6:12
"Yet even now..." Those three words
  • 6:12 - 6:14
could be something that somebody's faith
  • 6:14 - 6:15
    could cling to.
  • 6:15 - 6:17
    "Yet even now..."
  • 6:17 - 6:19
    Wait, what's that?
  • 6:19 - 6:21
"Yet even now, declares the Lord,
  • 6:21 - 6:24
return to Me with all your heart."
  • 6:24 - 6:26
You know when you say that -
  • 6:26 - 6:27
    "yet even now" -
  • 6:27 - 6:30
it's after people have done a lot of bad.
  • 6:30 - 6:32
Yet even now after all you've done,
  • 6:32 - 6:37
"if anyone will turn to Me
    with all their heart
  • 6:37 - 6:39
with fasting, with weeping, with mourning,
  • 6:39 - 6:40
rend your hearts and not your garments,
  • 6:40 - 6:42
return to the Lord your God,
  • 6:42 - 6:44
for He is gracious and merciful..."
  • 6:44 - 6:46
    How about these three words?
  • 6:46 - 6:48
    "...slow to anger."
  • 6:48 - 6:50
I mean if a man's faith can get into that.
  • 6:50 - 6:53
    God is slow to anger.
  • 6:53 - 6:55
I can put my weight on that promise,
  • 6:55 - 6:57
because I've provoked Him for a long time,
  • 6:57 - 7:00
    but He's slow to anger.
  • 7:00 - 7:03
Oh, certainly the God of Scripture
  • 7:03 - 7:06
in all of His infinite mercies,
  • 7:06 - 7:09
    certainly I could not
    wear out His kindness
  • 7:09 - 7:12
just in these years I've done this.
  • 7:12 - 7:14
Certainly God is greater than that.
  • 7:14 - 7:18
    Those words, "yet even now."
  • 7:18 - 7:19
    Or how about this?
  • 7:19 - 7:23
    God's kindness is meant
    to lead to repentance.
  • 7:23 - 7:26
Because one of the things I told him,
  • 7:26 - 7:30
I told him one of the things that tells me
  • 7:30 - 7:33
God is not done with you,
  • 7:33 - 7:36
is He led you to that Paul Washer sermon.
  • 7:36 - 7:39
    And He convicted you.
  • 7:39 - 7:45
    And you came clean!
  • 7:45 - 7:47
    He confessed.
  • 7:47 - 7:48
    He confessed to his wife.
  • 7:48 - 7:51
    He confessed to his church.
  • 7:51 - 7:54
    That is a kindness.
  • 7:54 - 7:55
    And what would you say?
  • 7:55 - 7:57
    God's kindnesses are not meant
  • 7:57 - 8:01
    to lead him to repentance?
  • 8:01 - 8:03
You see, that isn't the indication
  • 8:03 - 8:05
    in my estimation of somebody
  • 8:05 - 8:08
    that God is done with.
  • 8:08 - 8:10
    Or how about this?
  • 8:10 - 8:13
To Sardis - Oh, when I preached
  • 8:13 - 8:15
about those seven churches in Asia Minor,
  • 8:15 - 8:19
    Sardis jumped out at me.
  • 8:19 - 8:22
    "You have a name
  • 8:22 - 8:24
    that you are alive,
  • 8:24 - 8:28
    but you are dead."
  • 8:28 - 8:31
    This is a church.
  • 8:31 - 8:34
You talk about people exposed to light.
  • 8:34 - 8:36
    But, you're dead.
  • 8:36 - 8:37
What did He say? No hope?
  • 8:37 - 8:39
    You've crossed the line?
  • 8:39 - 8:40
    He doesn't.
  • 8:40 - 8:44
    He says, "Wake up."
  • 8:44 - 8:46
You see if our faith can just
    grab words like that:
  • 8:46 - 8:50
    "Wake up."
  • 8:50 - 8:52
    Of course, there's these words.
  • 8:52 - 8:54
    John 6:37
  • 8:54 - 8:56
    Our Lord says,
  • 8:56 - 8:57
    "Whoever comes to Me,
  • 8:57 - 9:00
    I will never cast out."
  • 9:00 - 9:01
    Whoever!
  • 9:01 - 9:03
    It doesn't matter what
    you say you've done.
  • 9:03 - 9:07
    If you go to Christ,
    He won't cast you out.
  • 9:07 - 9:09
    Period.
  • 9:09 - 9:11
It's amazing when I come across people
  • 9:11 - 9:13
    who are struggling with
    the unpardonable sin
  • 9:13 - 9:15
and I bring up this text,
  • 9:15 - 9:19
    immediately, "Yeah, but..."
  • 9:19 - 9:22
Look, if you want to find every reason
  • 9:22 - 9:24
    not to believe a text,
  • 9:24 - 9:26
    that's classic unbeliever.
  • 9:26 - 9:28
    And you will perish.
  • 9:28 - 9:31
    See, the only hope is
  • 9:31 - 9:36
that our faith can find a place to stay.
  • 9:36 - 9:38
    This except was taken
    from the full sermon:
  • 9:38 - 9:40
    "People of Promise"
